better Documentation = better reimbursement & client outcomesMany of us could quickly rattle off the correct ICD-9-CM codes for the purpose of admission or encounter into rehab, as well as the aftercare for the rehab service provided. However, these and
other familiar codes for rehab will change dramatically due to the implementation of ICD-10-CM.
“But my office has software that will code for me,” you might respond. That might work for ICD-9, but the World Health Organization does not recommend this method for ICD-10-CM due to the
increase in codes (from 13,000 to 68,000) that focus more on anatomic site, severity, and other clinical details. The importance of familiarizing and mastering the new codes you will see in rehab for ICD-10-CM is only the beginning. Correct (or incorrect) coding has a ripple effect that concerns more than accurate documentation; it concerns reimbursement, audits, clinical care, treatment plans, and tracking outcomes.
Don’t wait until October 2015 rolls around; be proactive by improving your rehab documentation now!
course DirectorDebra mitcHeLL, msPH, cPc-H, is a consultant and auditor for coding and compliance as well as a professional instructor in coding, billing, and medical terminology for adult education at the college level. Her educational experiences coincide with her 30 years of medical records and billing experience at every level of responsibility. Ms. Mitchell is a member of the American Academy of Professional Coders, certified in hospital coding, and named to the Biltmore’s Who’s Who in America’s Professional Women. As an auditor, she performs routine audits and provider education for an orthopedic billing service. In addition, she works for a consulting firm that specializes in cardiology. She has developed several courses for adult education programs in medical coding and billing at the college level and has contributed to the development of a coding certification program. She supervised a statewide Medicaid “peer review” program, which conducted quality reviews of services provided to the recipients, medical record documentation, and correct coding audits. Her teaching ability is reflected in the professional success of her students and her excellent evaluations. Debra Mitchell brings an effective communication style to this very important subject and provides an enjoyable and worthwhile learning experience.
