HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 267, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

First I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I love this time of year as it always has the hope of possible miracles more then any other time. I get into some of the sappy Christmas movies that are on Hallmark/ ABC Family or Lifetime. The ones I like best are the ones where there is a person that might just be the real Santa Claus. One of my favorites is “Christmas Angel.” It has Bruce Davison (X-Men’s Senator Kelly) who plays a wealthy philanthropist who tries to help people anonymously. He isn’t Santa Claus but his actions are Santa like. Good movie to see. For next month please send in your New Years resolutions. I will not point you out if you don’t want me to but I will post some of the ones that are sent in to show what people want to do in the New Year. Also you can send reviews or news articles you want your other ship mates to see. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

Well, it’s December and we’re in the holiday season, my favorite time of year. (Not winter, just the Christmas holidays.) I enjoy the shopping, the songs and carols. And let’s not forget the football games. Soon it’s will be time for New Year’s resolutions. But that can wait. Concerning ships’ business, there’s only one pressing matter. The holidays are for visiting with family and friends. I hope you make time to enjoy family and friends. So to each one of you, have a Merry Christmas and a joyous Holiday Season!

November 8, 2013 Fall Feast Social

The Fall Feast was a great time. I want to thank the Potts for hosting this years Feast. As usual Pete fixed his famous turkey. We also had other sides including pumpkin pie. We played Dice Farmer which is a fun game and doesn’t take long to learn but a lot of luck to win. The Fall Feast Texas Hold’em Poker tournament netted the club $70 for the treasury. Pete was the winner of this years Poker game.

Attendance: 12 people.

SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,

Unit activities:

654th MSG MGen Yawn preformed 14 volunteer hours with the Brookside fire Rescue. MGen Yawn attended the Jacksonville State University rifle match where his UAB Blazers competed. 677th MSG October Took ten bags of food and several treat boxes to Decatur Animal Shelter. The OIC MGEN Rebecca Louise Self is still taking courses in both SFMCA and SFA. The unit birthdays this month were Christopher Magann (10-07) and Cathy White (10-10). We toasted and wished Scott Baluka (10-09); a Happy Birthday. The unit toasted John Denver who died back in 1997. He wrote the ship song for which our unit resides. We also toasted two unit mascots for the day they became the mascots back in 2007, Addie Mae and Cracker (10-08). The OIC took the DOIC out several times on the town to discuss possible activities for the unit to do. This was then taken to the unit to see what ideas they might add to the list. November will be discussion voting on these. For Halloween the unit held a party and even the mascots dressed up and had fun. November: Took six bags of food and several treat boxes to Decatur Animal Shelter. The OIC MGEN Rebecca Louise Self is still taking courses in both SFMCA and SFA. The unit birthdays this month Nancy O'Shield (11-15) and Lynn Magann (11-23). The unit toasted Bruce O'Brien on his birthday (11-06). Some of the unit went out several times for dinner for get togethers. Where the OIC and DOIC live there is a weekend (11-30) of football rivalry (this is a state wide deal here in Alabama for the two universities for the folks in New Zealand to hear about) called the Alabama/ Auburn game. Auburn beat Alabama 34-28. Not the out come the OIC and DOIC were hoping for.

Major General Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG

Karl Urban on Fox

Karl Urban is playing a cop, Detective John Kennex, on a new show Almost Human. It is a science fiction

series of a robot cop and human cop team up. There have been several shows like this (Holmes and Yoyo,

Mann and Machine, etc) which might not bode well for this one. The robot (android) is played by Michael

Ealy. He has been in Common Law, The Good Wife and Flash Forward plus others. I like it so far but Fox is

doing its normal stupid thing of showing the episodes out of order. This causes continuity problems and

possible demise of the show like Fox did with other Sci-Fi shows (e.g. Firefly).

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (ABC)

***** (Warning there may be spoilers) *****

ABC has made a spin off of Once Upon a Time with the Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. The only connection so far with Once upon a Time is that Storybrooke is featured in a beginning scene. Other than that it takes off on its own story and has not gone back to it. Like with Once Upon A Time the show is using several characters from Disney animated movies (e.g. Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin) and filling in a back story.

The story does revolve around Alice who as a little girl went missing and her parents don’t believe she went to Wonderland. She has now gone back to Wonderland to bring proof back to her father so he will believe her. She is also looking to save her true love the Genie (sorry not played by Robin Williams). Characters that show up are Jafar, The Red Queen, the White Rabbit Twiddle Dee, Twiddle Dum and the caterpillar. The Red Queen is the Red Chess Queen instead of the Queen of Hearts that we know for the animated movie. Side note: the Queen of Hearts showed up in Once Upon A Time.

The show has kept my interest. I like the character of the White Rabbit (voiced by John Lithgow). The White Rabbit is the sort of character that easily gets into a jam. His dilemma is that what he might do to get out of the jam may hurt Alice for whom he has developed a fondness. The back ground for Jafar is like Regina form Once Upon A Time in that he is evil because those around him have hurt him so he is getting back at everyone for those who were mean to him.
