Everybody: young and old, poor and rich loved her because she always had a

pleasant word for them. Children came to visit her for stories and for little presents,

they were always happy to be with her.

She liked tea and she had a special way of making and drinking it, she had little

decorated glasses and when children asked her for tea, she gave them the little

The Project 2.1

Instructions: read and answer the questions

The model with metal legs

Aimee Mullins is munching French toast at her favourite greasy spoon in

Manhattan's West Village. She's tall, slim and blonde with wide, hazel eyes,

wearing Stella McCartney cords and high-heeled sandals. It's only when she hoists

a leg up on the table and reminds me that it's fake, that the illusion of physical

perfection is shattered.

Aimee, 25, had both legs amputated just below the knee when she was a year old.

She was born without a fibula in her lower legs, possibly caused by her mother

taking antibiotics before she knew she was pregnant.

The next few years were spent in a wheelchair, and doctors warned that she would

never walk. Unfazed, Aimee taught herself to walk with artificial legs and by the

age of 10, she was also running, skiing and playing softball.

"My parents never told me that I couldn't do something," she says. "They expected

me to excel." And she did. Aimee did her internship at the Pentagon, broke world

records in the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump at the 1996 Paralympics, and

has been voted one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People.

The Project 3.1

Instructions: read and answer the questions

Why Physical Activity is Important for You?

People need to be active to be healthy. Our modern lifestyle and all the

conveniences we've become used to have made us sedentary - and that's

dangerous for our health. Sitting around in front of the TV or the computer, riding in

the car for even a short trip to the store and using elevators instead of stairs or

ramps all contribute to our inactivity. Physical inactivity is as dangerous to our

health as smoking!

Add up your activities during the day in periods of at least 10 minutes each. Start

slowly... and build up. If you're already doing some light activities move up to more

moderateones. A little is good, but more is better if you want to achieve health

benefits.

Scientists say accumulate 60 minutes of physical activity every day to stay healthy

or improve your health. Time needed depends on effort - as you progress to

moderateactivities, you can cut down to thirty minutes, four days a week.

Physical activity doesn't have to be very hard to improve your health. This goal can

bereached by building physical activities into your daily routine. Just add up in

periods of atleast ten minutes each throughout the day. After three months of

regular physical activity, you will notice a difference - people often say getting

started is the hardest part.(From Handbook for Canada's Physical Activity Guide to

Healthy Active Living p. 4. Canadian Society for Exercise

Physiology, Ottawa, Ontario, 1998)

a. Smoking is less dangerous than physical inactivity.

b. You do not need more than sixty minutes a day to be fit.

III. Find a word or phrase in the text which, in context, is similar in meaning

to: (1 point: 0.5 each)

a. inactive

b. fit

Practice A41. Questions about means of transportation

Instructions: read and answer each question below.

Bicycles are quick, clean and healthy

Bicycles are a quick and clean mode of transport and cycling is good for you.

Research has shown that employees who cycle to work are healthier than those

who do not.

1. What mean of transportation is healthier a bike or a car?

Motorcycles:

There are around half a million motorcyclists in Costa Rica. As well as for

commuting, motorcycles are also seen as a form of recreation. A large number of

motorcyclists ride for fun. Motorcyclists are relatively vulnerable: they are not

protected by the bodywork and airbags that protect car drivers. The risk of being

injured–or worse– in an accident is therefore higher than for car drivers.

2. Which mean of transportation is more dangerous a motorcycle or a car?

6 http://bogglesworldesl.com/wordsearches.htm.

44

Taxis

In Costa Rica there are many different kinds of taxis that can be classified as either

the familiar street taxis or contract hire. Contract hire includes, for instance,

regional taxis, but also refers to the transport of school pupils and the disabled.

3. What are contract hire taxis?

Cars

Cars are the most widely used means of transport in Costa Rica. Everybody knows

that you need a driving license to be allowed to drive a car and that you must obey

the rules of the road.

4. Why do you need a driving license?7

Lesson 4C.Transportation in Costa Rica

Reading Comprehension

There are rent-a-cars in Costa Rica, in the airport, in the capital city of San Jose

and other cities and in some rural areas. Lots of these cars are four-wheel drives,

but they're not used only for rural roads, since potholes abound in main streets in

major cities. Lately, the roads have been well-marked and one can get maps and

directions from the ICT (Tourism Bureau) in downtown San Jose, under the Plaza

de la Cultura.

Trains are a great option for more romantic or adventuresome tourists, but there

are also buses in Costa Rica, and plenty of them for that matter. There are also

other means of transportation like taxis, rent-a-cars, planes, helicopters and some

trains. Costa Rica might not be as advanced as other countries in many respects,

but it does offer many different and for the most part, cheap options for getting

around the country.

Lesson 7B. Action/Verb Reading

Here is a little story to help you learn about

Action Verbs.

Anna jumped from bed on Monday. She ran to the

breakfast table, doing three cartwheels on the way.

"Anna, you are too active!" said Mrs. Action/Verb.

"So?" Anna replied as she leapt out the door.

She raced her friend, Donna Direct-Object, all

www.bogglesworldesl.com. the way to school. But she couldn't sit still. Ms. Sentence, the

teacher, tapped her ruler on her desk and said, "Anna, SIT STILL!"

"Yes, ma'am," Anna said as she picked up her pencil.

When the class lined up for Art, Patrick Pronoun whispered, "You'd better stop

being so active. You'll get into trouble." But Anna was seeing how long she could

hop on one foot and not trip over Donna.

The Art teacher, Mrs. Preposition, was showing the class how to draw

snowflakes when Anna tipped over in her chair. Then she did five somersaults right

into a table. Anna got a bruise on her forehead and had to go to the nurse.

Then Mr. Noun, the principal, wrote a note home to Anna's parents. And can

you guess what Mr. and Mrs. Action/Verb decided? No gymnastics, Anna's favorite

class, for a week! So Anna learned to do flips only in gymnastics and to learn in

school instead.

The project 7.1. Read and answer the questions.

Mr. Williams was always a very careful driver

As one approaches some crossroads, one comes to a sign which says that drivers

have to stop when they come to the main road ahead. At other crossroads, drivers

have to go slow, but they do not actually have to stop (unless, of course, there is

something coming along the main road); and at still others, they do not have either

to stop or to go slow, because they are themselves on the main road.

Mr. Williams, who was always a very careful driver, was driving home from work

one evening when he came to a crossroads. It had a “Slow” sign, so he slowed

down when he came to the main road, looked both ways to see that nothing was

coming, and then drove across without stopping completely.

At once he heard a police whistle, so he pulled in to the side of the road and

stopped. A policeman walked over to him with a notebook and pencil in his hand

and said, “You didn’t stop at the crossing.”

“But the sign there doesn’t say “Stop”,” answered Mr Williams. “It just says “Slow”,

and I did go slow.”

The policeman looked around him, and a look of surprise came over his face. Then

he put his notebook and pencil away, scratched his head and said, “Well, I’ll be

blowed” I am in the wrong street!”

QUESTIONS

1. Answer the following questions using your own words but taking into account the

information in the text. (2 points)

a. When do you have to stop when you reach a crossroads?

b. What happens when you are on the main road?

106

2. After the following statements True or False? Identify the part of the text that

supports your answer by copying the exact passage.

a. Stop signs can be found at every crossroads.

b. Mr Williams was a distracted driver.

c. Mr. Williams stopped completely before crossing the main road.

The project 8.1. Reading Comprehension

Mr Jones’s house, coming from the direction of the town

Mr Jones woke early one morning, before the sun had risen. It was a beautiful

morning, so he went to the window and looked out. He was surprised to see a

neatly dressed, middle-aged professor, who worked in the university just up the

road from Mr Jones’s house, coming from the direction of the town. He had grey

hair and thick glasses, and was carrying an umbrella, a morning newspaper and a

bag. Mr Jones thought that he must have arrived by the night train and decided to

walk to the university instead of taking a taxi.

Mr Jones had a big tree in his garden, and the children had tied a long rope to one

of its branches, so that they could swing on it.

Mr Jones was surprised to see the professor stop when he saw the rope, and look

carefully up and down the road. When he saw that there was nobody in sight, he

stepped into the garden (there was no fence), put his umbrella, newspaper, bag

and hat neatly on the grass and took hold of the rope. He pulled it hard to see

whether it was strong enough to take his weight, then ran as fast as he could and

swung into the air on the end of the rope, his grey hair blowing all around his face.

Backwards and forwards he swung, occasionally taking a few more running steps

on the grass when the rope began to swing too slowly for him.

At last the professor stopped, straightened his tie, combed his hair carefully, put on

his hat, picked up his umbrella, newspaper and bag, and continued on his way to

the university, looking as quiet and correct and respectable as one would expect a

professor to be.

QUESTION

I. Choose a, b or c in each question below. Only one choice is correct. (1.5 points)

1. The university was

a. near Mr Jones’s house.

b. far from Mr Jones’s house.

c. next to Mr Jones’s house.

personality is really more important. I'm a good nanny because I have a rapport

with youngsters and babies - it isn't a gift exclusive to women.”

His female counterparts have welcomed Martin, although some chauvinistic

Doctors are responsible for the diagnosis, care and treatment of illnesses,

diseases, infections and well-being of people. They may work in a variety of

settings such as in a hospital or as a family doctor. Hospital doctors can go on to

specialize in particular areas of medicine such as pathology, psychiatry and

pediatrics, or surgery, such as orthopedics and ophthalmology. Learning to be a

doctor involves a long and expensive course of study. You will generally spend 5

years as an undergraduate at medical school. You will then become a

preregistration house officer for one year. After this year, you can apply to the

American Medical Association to become a fully licensed doctor. You will then

have at least 3 more years of further education to become a family doctor or at

least 7 years to become a hospital consultant.

Contemporary medicine is challenging and exciting. Countless new discoveries are

making their impact on medical practice, and doctors now qualifying will see even

more dramatic changes in the future, with the development of many new

techniques, involving not only drugs, but methods arising from research in

electronics, nuclear physics, genetics and molecular biology.
