To define ‘bullying’ (both ‘direct’ and ‘indirect’)

To know the different forms bullying can take

To know to school routines and procedures when tackling these issues

To answer any questions you may have

Aims:-

On a post-it note write a few words/phrases to complete this sentence…

What makes a behaviour ‘bullying’ rather than peer-peer conflict or unprovoked aggression?

1.It is ongoing and repeated2.It is deliberate and intentional3.There is a power difference between the person/people doing the bullying and the person experiencing it.

‘Bullying’ – What is it?

‘Direct’ bullying is when the bullying is done directly to the target – he or she might be pushed, hit, tripped, told ‘you cant play with us’ or making signs directly to the person etc.

‘Indirect’ bullying happens behind someone's back such as rumour spreading, whispering, making signs to each other, stealing, excluding someone indirectly for example making up excuses why they can’t come rather than telling them directly etc.

‘Direct’ and ‘Indirect’

Physical – bullying using physical force i.e. punching, tripping etc.Verbal – name calling/ saying unkind thingsEmotional –spreading rumours/ ignoring/ turning others against youRacial – bullying about skin colour or religious beliefsCyber – bullying through the use of technology i.e. text messages/ email/ chat rooms/ social networking etc.

Bullying types..

On your table you have a selection of scenarios – can you decide

whether it is ‘bullying’ or simply ‘unkind behaviour’ AND if it is

direct or indirect!

Place the scenarios in the correct boxes on your Carroll diagram…
