DAY 1 BUENOS AIRES  Meet the group in Buenos Aires a day ahead of sailing. Your hotel night is included.

DAY 2 EMBARKATION Welcome dinner on board the ship, while the crew set an overnight course for the Southern Ocean.

DAYS 3–5 SOUTHERN OCEAN Among the wildlife spotting opportunities as we sail south are the Albatrosses, Prions, and Petrels that frequently follow the ship. Our Expedition Team will be out on deck as well, looking for the Whales and Dolphins that may also be seen in the area. Our experts will begin the presentations with informative and entertaining talks on the wildlife, history, and geology of The Falkland Islands and Southern Ocean. Helpful briefings on environmental regulations and expedition safety will also be held in the comfortable lounge.

DAY 6 WEST FALKLANDS The western most settled outposts in the Falklands are remote farms that have been family-owned for six and seven generations. The sheep graze alongside Albatross colonies and Rockhopper, King, and Macaroni Penguin rookeries while Striated Caracaras patrol overhead and Upland Geese graze at the water’s edge. A visit to one of these homesteads often includes an invitation for cakes and a cup of tea.    DAY 7 STANLEY, EAST FALKLANDS Chosen for its sheltered harbour and access to abundant fresh water and peat for fuel, Stanley is easy to discover on foot as most shops and services are centred on the port. The museum, the post-office featuring first day covers, plenty of shops with locally made wool items and Stanley’s lively pubs will all be available. It is possible to experience the wildlife of the Falklands from the town including Sea Lions and Peale’s and Commerson’s Dolphins in the harbour or bird life in nearby Gypsy Cove.

DAYS 8-9 SOUTHERN OCEAN There will be plenty of wildlife spotting as we make our way east across the Antarctic Convergence and officially enter Antarctic waters. Shipboard presentations will continue featuring the exciting history and abundant wildlife of South Georgia.

DAYS 10-13 SOUTH GEORGIA Its unique position inside the Antarctic Convergence yet outside the limit of the yearly sea ice makes this 3,755 square kilometre island home to tens of millions of breeding Penguins, Seals, and Seabirds. Magnificent mountain scenery, glaciers galore, a rugged coastline punctuated with castellate and tabular icebergs, a rich historical tapestry, and an astounding array of wildlife are all available to us as we travel down South Georgia’s leeward coast. Landing sites feature huge Elephant Seals, aggressive Fur Seals, Macaroni Penguins, Albatross, Petrels, Skuas, and Gulls. King Penguins from fuzzy little chicks to fattened adults can be seen in the hundreds of thousands. We will visit historic Grytviken whaling station, home of the whaling museum, Norwegian seaman’s church, the active British Antarctic Survey station plus the tiny graveyard where the great Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried.

DAYS 14-15 SCOTIA SEA  Heading farther south, we continue our informative presentations and wildlife watch as the icebergs become more and more plentiful.

DAYS 16-19 ANTARCTICA & SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS The land of superlatives, Antarctica! Our Expedition Leader and Captain will create a flexible itinerary based on weather, ice, and opportunity. The route will stress the most scenic bays and channels of the Peninsula with stops at penguin rookeries, seal wallows, bird colonies and whale feeding areas as well as sites of historic and scientific interest. The trip may include picturesque Neko Harbour, sheltered Paradise Harbor, the Humpback Whale favoured Wilhelmina Bay, the striking Lemaire Channel, the wildlife-filled Penola Channel, or the majestic Neumayer Channel. We may stop at an active scientific base such as Poland’s Arctowksi or Ukraine’s Vernadskiy as well as an historic base such as U.K.’s Port Lockroy or Wordie House. Adelie, Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins abound, and Weddell, Crabeater and Elephant Seals are often found hauled out to rest along with predatory Leopard Seals and the aggressive Antarctic Fur Seal. Minke and Humpback Whales are frequent visitors in the late season and Orca sightings are also common.

DAYS 20-21 DRAKE PASSAGE We will continue our presentation series and wildlife spotting as we sail back to Ushuaia and reflect on beautiful Antarctica and its fragile future. We arrive at Ushuaia in the early hours of Day 22.

DAY 22 USHUAIA DISEMBARKATION Morning disembarkation lets you catch a flight homeward or extend our stay in Ushuaia for more sights and adventure.

Long versus Wide

You wont need a 600mm f/4 lens to make this trip worth while.

A fast telephoto such as a 70-200mm f/2.8 will be more than

enough for most wildlife opportunities. Even the f/4 version will

do a great job. The 100-400mm range is more than sufficient to

capture the action.

You will enjoy using a good telephoto, but don’t be surprised

if your favourite penguin images are with a wide angle lens.

Many penguins are curious of humans and will come close to

check you out.

Capturing the grandeur of the ice and Antarctic Peninsula will

demand a wide angle lens. 18mm perspective is recommended

here, there are many times when 24mm wont quite be enough.

StorageGiven the nature of these journeys we highly recommend you bring a lot of spare storage. Some days you will shoot nothing, but some days you will shoot everything :)

A full frame DSLR will easily chew through 32GB of memory on a good day, sometimes triple that. Standing on a beach with tens of thousands of penguins, or panning on albatross as they swoop the top deck, will consume lots of storage.

Most days you will have a chance to download your cards over lunch before heading back out to shoot again. 128GB of memory cards is a good starting point.

A pair of 1TB external hard drive is also regarded as sensible for this journey, one for storage and one for backups.

Cameras are coolWe hear a lot of fuss about taking cameras into Arctic and Antarctic conditions and how to prepare for the freezing temperatures. If you’re shooting with a modern DSLR camera then you need not be worried about the cold. Your gear will cope just fine.

Water is what you do need to protect against. Keeping the camera gear dry while moving from the shop to shore, by zodiac, is an opportunity to suffer water damage. Just stepping into or out of a zodiac is the most dangerous time for your camera, plus the potential for spray while motoring.

You will need to ensure your camera bag can be dropped into a dry bag during these transfers, or use a dedicated marine friendly camera bag.

Good gloves are also useful to keep your fingers warm while in the zodiac, again with protection from water. When moving at speed you’ll want to stay warm and dry. When drifting past ice bergs or whale you’ll have time to remove gloves and work the camera.

HebredianSkyFreshly returning to service after a major refit, the Hebredian

Sky features state of the art stabilisation, new communications

facilities and redecorated suites.

Internet access is available throughout the ship via WiFi and

you will have excellent meals for the journey with a dedicated

team of professionals in the galley. There’s even an outdoor

jacuzzi and space to take a walk around the decks while at sea.

The ship carries no more than 100 passengers, which means

you are guaranteed access to every single zodiac outing. The

team of experts and expedition crew is superb, making this a

journey of discovery as well as photography.

Get Ashore This expedition cruise is ideal for photography, with multiple zodiac

trips every day when not sailing between shores. Sometimes

this means you’re cruising through ice bergs, sometimes chasing

whales, and usually it means getting off the water and stepping on

shore with the penguins.

The heaviest gear required for staying warm and dry during this

trip is provided on board. You must ensure you pack warm layers

and waterproof pants, but even an Antarctic grade weather jacket

is supplied.

When on shore you have to take care not to approach the penguins, but they are free to approach you. And they will. Some even peck at your gumboots :)

Art and Creativity

The camera is like a paintbrush, and in the hands of different

people it will produce very different images.

Ewen Bell specialises in teaching people about the creative

potential of photography, to go beyond the technical issues

of a camera and start taking creative control. Expression is

at the heart of great photography, sharing your perspective,

your view, your experience.

Combining with Ewen’s creative outlook is Ian Rolfe and

his decades of experience in Landscape Photography.

Two unique and powerful aspects are brought together to

provide a once in a lifetime adventure for photographers in

search of something out of the ordinary.

Post CaptureBoth Ian and Ewen like to emphasis the art of photography

that takes place in the digital darkroom.

Every day of this Antarctic expedition will allow for opportunities to discuss, refine and learn about post-processing techniques.

Do bring your laptop and your preferred processing software. A photo is never finished at the moment of the shutter, and as you learn different ways to process your images you can also adjust your technical approach to the camera accordingly.

Given the nature of these journeys we highly recommend you bring a lot of spare storage. A 36MP DSLR will easily chew through 32GB of memory on a good day, sometimes triple that. You will have a chance to download over lunch most days, but a pair of 1TB external hard drive is regarded as sensible for this journey, one for storage and one for backups.

Escort / Ewen Bell

All the images in this brochure were taken by Ewen on his previous trips to the Antarctic region. His photography is routinely published internationally, appearing in photographic

magazines, National Geographic Traveller, Food & Travel UK, Vacation & Travel, in flight magazines and many other outlets.

Ewen describes photography as a lifestyle, and enjoys sharing his love of the art with a select few travellers every year. Ewen is always happy to share his knowledge

on photographic matters of technical, creative and career inspiration. His website “Photography for Travellers” is dedicated to offering advice on practical approaches to

changing your creative perspective.

“This is the planet like you’ve never seen it before, the edge of human existence and the most pristine environment on earth. Nobody goes home unchanged, nobody fails to gain

a deeper understanding of how fragile or world really is.“
