Users can now apply a Shared Topology Method to bodies within a multi-body part. This allows users to specify sharing setting for individual bodies that are different from the rest of the part, giving much greater flexibility.

Parallel part by part meshing
Parallel Part meshing
• Simultaneously meshes multiple parts on multiple CPU’s
• Works for all part mesh methods
• For mesh methods that mesh in parallel will utilize cores for both part meshing and body meshing (user should set Number of CPUs for meshing methods and Number of CPUs for part meshing appropriately)
• Program controlled will attempt to use all cores on the machine provided there is enough RAM

Robustness Improvements
• Mesh failure handling
• Improved PI topology checking
• Improved match mesh robustness
• Improved hex meshing
© 2012 ANSYS, Inc. February 6, 2014 26 ANSYS Confidential & Proprietary Information
Mesh Failure Handling
Improved failure handling: – Better user indication
• Markers to help find problematic faces
On inspection, use single/multiple
edge display to see holes in mesh

Mesh Failure Handling
If Meshing fails, user can export mesh and edit in Fluent Meshing or ICEM CFD (File->Export)
Overlapping faces exist

Better user indication: – When mesh sizes are changed, and mesh goes
out of date, bodies are indicated in yellow
Mesh Failure Handling

PI Topology Checking Control (while meshing)
Why is this failing?
Mesher is often stricter
than it needs to be.
Is this a problem?
Meshing success for Patch Independent (PI) mesh methods requires respecting all topologies that have Named selections, loads, etc. applied.
© 2012 ANSYS, Inc. February 6, 2014 30 ANSYS Confidential & Proprietary Information
PI Topology Checking Control (while meshing)
User has 2 options:
1) Improve sizing controls to capture feature and re-mesh
2) Turn off Topology checking:
Mesher will respect most topology, but user should validate important features are in the named selections.
Min size was too
large originally
© 2012 ANSYS, Inc. February 6, 2014 31 ANSYS Confidential & Proprietary Information
PI Topology Checking Control (after meshing)
PI Tet mesh methods only have mesh association for topology defined prior to meshing.
1. If a user creates a Named Selection, Load, etc. after meshing, the mesh goes out of date if Topology checking is Yes. Mesh does not necessarily need to be re-generated, but user must generate mesh to ensure associations are correct.
2. If user turns Topology checking to No, Named Selections, Loads, etc. can be applied w/out having to re-check associations. User should check on their own.

Improved match mesh robustness
• Mesher more tolerant – Warning given when geometry is out of tolerance
– Mesher comes off geometry to make mesh periodic
© 2012 ANSYS, Inc. February 6, 2014 33 ANSYS Confidential & Proprietary Information
Improved match mesh robustness
• Improved for cyclic and arbitrary match controls
• High side is respected, and low side is adjusted to match
High side faces
are meshed
LCS is not positioned
exactly right
Low side mesh is matched
exactly, but needs to come
off geometry to
accommodate this

Mesh captures respected topology
Mesh captures sharp features,
Ignores cutout features
unless protected
