THE BIBLE AND GEOLOGY willbe addressed by popular speakerBarry Setterfield* (with intro-duction by wife Penny) at ourSeptember meeting. He will belooking at the data in the geolog-ical column itself, at the infor-mation in the Bible, and compare
both to the standard geological model of time andthe most widely accepted creation model of time,in terms of geology.
While the standard ‘long ages’ geology model isin need of hard scrutiny, Setterfield maintains thatthere are elements of the standard ‘one flood dideverything’ view which are clearly in need of asecond look. He will point to where he sees thedata itself as leading, with the Bible giving us areliable framework. Interestingly, Barry says that“though the data itself supports the Bible, it is notin the way the standard creation model presents it.It’s a very young earth, but the flood of Noah didnot create most of the geological column”.
THIS MONTH’S DSA MEETING will be held on
Saturday, September 19, 2009, from 9 to 11:30 AM.Note: this presentation will feature a view of thegeologic column that is in contrast to the under-standing more common to young-earth creationists.Join us for a lively discussion!*Born in Western Australia to Salvation Army parents, Barry Set-terfield later attended Adelaide University, having a double majorin geology and physics. Due to ill health and some family prob-lems, he was unable to finish. He later lectured for six years inastronomy for the Astronomical Society of South Australia.
Barry is Director of the New Hope Observatory in GrantsPass, Oregon, where he teaches astronomy. He and wife Pennyhave lectured together at colleges, churches and other groupsfor about six years, and are currently in the process of making aseries of DVDs of Barry’s work.

The Bible & Geology—Where Does the Data Lead?
Two day trips are scheduled for October—led by JohnHergenrather, that will explore some of the extraordinarynatural history of the Columbia Gorge.
The first Saturday is designed for families who enjoy alittle hiking with hands-on collecting. The second Saturday is essentially the same except willbe a little easier, with only a few short walks. Most stopswill be between Hood River and The Dalles where wewill hunt and collect petrified wood, find beautifulquartzite cobbles that have been transported some 300miles from their source, discover plants that grow only inthe Gorge, and identify fall wildflowers. We will discussthe miraculous migration of the Monarch which dependson the endangered milkweed.
On these trips we will compare 2 explanations of earth
history, while trying to determine the strength of eachmodel based on field observations.
Travel will be about 50 miles total and to cut costs wewill car pool. Bring a sack lunch and a little extra moneyto help your driver, if we don’t take your car. Severalhandouts and a quiz will be provided.
Saturday, October 3 & 10: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Meet at: 8:45 AM at Starbucks by the HoodRiver Bridge to car pool
Cost: $15 per person (no charge for high schoolage and under)

The second Deschutes River Rafting adventurewas again well-attended. Though some of us felt alittle out of our “comfort zone” at times, attendeesconsidered the two day overnight journey wellworth it! Educational talks on wildlife, geologyand the night time sky were some of the high-lights. Deer, wild horses, ospreys, raccoons andother wildlife were seen in abundance. DiscoveryOutfitters continue to amaze us with their first-rate camp meals and the river’s best coffee.
