Pages 269–270exercise 1 1 F 2 F 3 F 4 S 5 F 6 F 7 S 8 F 9 F 10 Sexercise 2 Possible revisions are underlined.1 The storm began just as the whole family loaded into the car. 2 S 3 When we arrived at the campground, we unpacked. 4 My sister and I ran down to the river. 5 We took our fishing gear with us. 6 S 7 We didn’t catch any fish because we didn’t have the best bait. 8 S 9 Dad was cooking bean soup over the fire. 10 While Mom and my sister pitched the tent, we set up the picnic table.

Page 272exercise 3 Possible revisions are underlined. 1 Saturn is a huge planet. It is more than nine times larger than Earth. 2 Saturn is covered by clouds, and it is circled by bands of color. 3 Some of the clouds are yellow, but others are off-white. 4 Saturn has about twenty moons. Titan is the largest. 5 Many of Saturn’s moons have large craters. The crater on Mimas covers one third of its diameter. 6 C 7 The rings of Saturn are less than two miles thick, and they spread out from the planet for a great distance. 8 C 9 C 10 You can use a telescope to view Saturn, or you can visit a planetarium.

Review APossible revisions are underlined. Many deserts have no plant life, but

some desert regions have a variety of plants. Many plants can survive where the climate is hot and dry. Cacti, Joshua trees, palm trees, and wildflowers grow in deserts. Those plants do not grow close together. They are spread out, so each plant gets water and minerals from a large area.

Lesson 2

Page 22Your turn 2 Sample answers may include: sensory language—puffs of white dust, rattling, buzzing; figures of speech—hair as sleek and black as raven wings, humming sound that rose and fell like the wind; precise words—shoulder-length hair, knee-length kilts, a tortoise shell rattle

Page 25 (Enrichment) Mini-Lesson: vocabulary Sample answers may include: 1 The sentence says they “. . . held secret rituals . . .” You hold things, so rituals are things, so the word ritual is a noun. The rituals are secrets and one of them is the ceremony called the snake dance. Rituals must also be spiritual or religious ceremonies. 2 The sentence says “Many of the snakes were coachwhips...” Whips are things people used to drive coaches pulled by horses, so coachwhips must be a noun. Coachwhips might be snakes that look like those whips. 3 The sentences says “. . . a short, stocky man . . .” Stocky is an adjective that describes the short man. One of the meanings of the word stock is the trunk of a plant. Stocky must mean thick and strong like the trunk of a plant. 4 The sentence says “. . . the desert obscured by sheets of rain.” Obscured must be an adjective because it modifies the noun desert. It tells something about the desert. I know sheets of rain make it dark and hard to see outside. Maybe the word obscured means “to hide something or make it hard to see.”

5 The sentence says “. . . knowledge of how to cajole a rattlesnake...” Cajole is a verb because it is what you do, an action. To get a rattlesnake to withhold its venom, you would have to do something to it. The Hopis are gentle with snakes. Maybe they talk to them or persuade them with their secret rituals. Cajole could mean “persuade.”

Page 31 (Enrichment) Mini-Lesson: writing Sample answers: 1 At about 11:40 A.M. every day, pictures of food begin dancing around my brain. I shift restlessly in my seat. Time slows to a crawl. Then—oh, joy! The bell rings. I whip by my locker, throw my books inside, and race to the cafeteria. 2 For two hours, Anna-Marie was a statue, hardly breathing as she stared with wide-open eyes at the figures on the stage. 3 “Why did I have to come? You know I can’t stand this symphony stuff,” Jordan grumbled to his parents as he kicked at the velvet padding on the seat in front of him. 4 I can hear her whining as I get off the school bus. The whines change to barks as I near the front door. When I finally step inside, two furry paws land with a “thud” on my chest, and a slobbery pink tongue laps at my face. 5 Paco’s eyes twinkle like diamonds, and a wide grin splits his face.

Lesson 7instruction Main idea of A writer’s Model: A snowboarding exhibition is an exciting event.

Page 32Your turn 7 Answers will vary.

Lesson 9Page 37responding to the revision Process 1 The writer added a simile to the end of the passage to compare the half-pipe to a big pipe cut in half. This comparison helps the reader envision a half-pipe. 2 By adding sensory details and precise words, the writer helps the reader see and feel the scene.

Page 38responding to the revision Process The precise words create sensory images that help the reader picture more clearly what is being described.Your turn 8 Answers will vary.

Lesson 10instruction 1 Answers will vary. 2 It is important to use descriptive language in an eyewitness account so that the reader can visualize the event.

Page 39Grammar Link Practice 1 “It’s too bad that snowboarding can be expensive,” said Henry. 2 “When you think about it,” Isabel sighed, “everything can be expensive.” 3 “Do you think individual lessons are less expensive?” Naomi wondered. 4 “Let’s take lessons during the winter break,” Roshanda suggested. 5 “I really like the clothes snowboarders wear,” Cesar added, “especially the hats.”
