Foreword
(This Foreword is not part of American National Standard ANSI/ISEA 2308.1-2009).
leading industry stakeholders, has developed this standard, updating and expanding ANSI/lSEAZ3O8.1-2003, to provide guidance for minimum performance levels of first aid kits for all types of uses qndsituations in the work environment. Member companies of the ISEA Industrial First Aid Group ihclude:ARl, 3M Company, MSA and North by Honeywell.
Kits in compliance with this standard will provide a basic range of products to deal with most types ofinjuries encountered in the workplace. The assortment of required contents was developed bafed ontreatment for the following potential injuries: major wounds, minor wounds (cuts and abrasions), minorburns and eye injuries. Significant updates incorporated into this version include the designation of newkit types and expansion of the required supply list to include a first aid guide. The recommendQd supplieslist has been expanded to include hand sanitizers in response to updated hygiene protocols anp provideadditional volume of eye/face wash. The kit label has been redesigned to draw specific attenti{n to factthat each workplace is unique and, as such, may necessitate the availability of additional first {idsupplies.
Suggestions for improvement of this standard are welcome. They should be sent to ISEA, 19q1 N. MooreStreet, Suite 808, Arlington, VA 22209, [email protected].
This standard was processed and approved using consensus procedures prescribed by theNational Standards Institute. The following organizations were contacted prior to the approvalstandard. Inclusion in this list does not necessarily imply that the organization concurred withsubmiftal of the proposed standard to ANSI.

Workplace First Aid Kits and Supp
American National StandardMinimum Requirements for
1. Scope and Purpose
This standard establishes minimum performancerequirements for first aid kits and their suppliesthat are intended for use in various workenvironments. Because each work environmentis unique, it is expected that the requiredproducts will be supplemented with additionalsupplies and quantities based upon theconsultation and recommendation of a personcompetent in first aid and cognizant of thehazards found in the particular workenvironment and upon the number of personswho may need first aid at one time. Personsdetermining the content of first aid kits shouldadditionally consult federal, state and localrequirements regarding the types and quantitiesof material to be included.
2. Compliance
To be in compliance with this standard, first aidkits must contain the required supplies ofSection 6.1 and meet all other applicablerequirements in their entirety. This standardanticipates that additional first aid supplies willbe included to augment the kit, based upon thespecific hazards existing in a particular workenvironment. The inclusion of workplace-specific first aid supplies does not, in and ofitself, place a first aid kit outside the purview ofthis standard. A first aid kit containing arecommended supply that is specificallyaddressed by this standard must comply withthe minimum performance criteria establishedfor such supplies under Section 6.2.
The choice of first aid supplies should be madeby a person competent in first aid and cognizantof the hazards found in the particular workenvironment.
All labeling and marking reguirements of thisstandard represent the manufacturer'sdeclaration of compliance with this standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore solely theresponsibility of the party marking the product. All labeling and markings shall be legible andpermanent. Where adhesive labels are usedthey shall not be easily removed.

Type | first aid kits are intended for use instationary, iqdoor settings where the potential fordamage of klt supplies due to environmentalfactors and rpugh handling is minimal. Type I
first aid kits shall have a means for mounting ina fixed and are generally not intended tobe oortable.
NOTE: T applications for Type | first aid kitsmay include, are not limited to, the following:general use, an office setting or a
facility. First aid cabinets wouldgenerally fall the Type I classification.
4.3
Type llfirst kits are intended for use inportable, i settings where the potential fordamage offactors and

Type lll first {iO kits are intended for portableuse in mobile, indoor andlor outdoor settings
pote damage suppldue to environmentalfactors is not probable.Type lll kits shall have a means to be mountedin a fixed position and shall have a waterresistant seal.
Note: Typical applications for Type lll first aid kitsmay include general indoor use and sheltered outdooruse.
4.5 Type lV
Type lV first aid kits are intended for portableuse in the mobile industries and/or outdoorseftings where the potential for damage to kitsupplies due to environmental factors and roughhandling is significant. Type lV kits shall have ameans to be mounted in a fixed position.
NOTE: Typical applications for Type lV first aid kitsmay include, but are not limited to, the following: thetransportation industry, the utility industry, theconstruction industry, and the armed forces.

After being conditioned and subjected to thedrop test as specified in Section 5.2.'1 , the kitsshall not open or be rendered difficult to open. lfany of the three test samples cannot be openedeasily after impact or opens as a result ofimpact, the kit fails the test.
5.2.1 Drop Test
The purpose of the drop test is to ensure thatthe first aid supplies remain in the container.
Test sample shall consist of a first aid containerloaded with the appropriate weight as notedbelow: . 1 lb for'10 unit container
. 1.5lb for 16 unit container. 2 lb for 24 unit container
. 2.5 lb for 36 unit container.
Three samples shall be conditioned hot at 120'F(49'C) for a minimum of 2 hours, and threesamples shall be conditioned cold at 0'F (-18'C)for a minimum of 2 hours.
Each conditioned sample shall be subjected tothe following drop test within 1.0 minute ofremoval from the conditioning environment. Each sample shall be dropped freely from avertical height of 48 in. (120 cm), as measuredfrom the bottom of the kit sample, onto a hardflat rigid surface such as concrete or a surface ofequivalent hardness. Each sample shall bedropped once, each on a different corner of thecase. For first aid kits that do not have corners, each sample shall be dropped on a differentlocation. The kits shall be examined after impactto determine if the kit is opened or is capable ofbeing opened.
