Marie Dessuant Désormais installée à Londres, cette designer française, diplômée de l’Ecole supérieure des Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg et ex-résidente de

Fabrica (le centre de recherche de Benetton), multiplie les collaborations. Elle signe “Drapeaux” (1), une série de miroirs pastel et “Watching the ships roll in” (2), une banquette longiligne pour la nouvelle maison d’édition française Singularité (www.singularite-editions.com).

et l’Italie, le designer Arik Levy in-

vestit le Paris du Passage de Retz.

Le titre même de son exposition,

« Apparences trompeuses », redé-

finit son statut de designer. Il rap-

pelle pour le coup ses débuts de

plasticien en 1986. Le designer –

et artiste donc – pointe aussi

dans cette somptueuse totale Levy « le primat de l’impact visuel sur

le design ». De fait, lui déploie ses œuvres entre art et de sign, avec

le thème du minéral comme boussole. Levy sculpteur ? Designer ?

Oui et re-oui. Protéiforme et éblouissant, comme dans son nouveau

Bienvenue à « Another Ceramic Candlestick ». Cette famille de trois bougeoirs en chêne et grès signée

Marie Dessuant tire son nom de son éditeur britannique, Another country, lancé par Paul de Zwart,

co-fondateur du magazine Wallpaper. Fidèle à l’ADN de cette maison de mobilier et accessoires aux

formes intemporelles questionnant les usages traditionnels, la jeune Française injecte une nouvelle fois

dans une forme simple et connue de tous (une boîte), une seconde fonctionnalité (un bougeoir).

Comme elle l’avait déjà fait avec son étagère/échelle, sa console/vide-poches pour Cinna et son banc

greffé d’un matelas chez Singularité Editions. M.Z.

ou avec une version griffée

Comme des Garçons (peinte

de pois noirs), le n°60 se pare d’un nouveau look moins assujetti

aux gimmicks d’une marque mais en total accord avec le style de

son géniteur. L’emploi de vert, d’orange ou de jaune pourrait pa-

raître étrange pour les puristes inconditionnels de son bois clair,

mais Mike Meiré, designer auteur du lifting, l’a fait en hommage

aux couleurs du sanatorium de Paimio, œuvre architecturale du Fin-

According to official numbers released by SAFI, the most recent session of Maison&Objet attracted a total of 70916 visitors, that is, a 4.7% decrease in participation compared to September 2011, a sign of the economic times.

The number of French participants has decreased by 6.8%, while the numbers of participating international players are virtually unchanged with the exception of Spain and Italy where the decrease in participation is the most significant. During the fall events, visitors were split between the fair in Villepinte, the second session of Paris Design Week in town, and Now! le off at Docks-en-seine Cité de la Mode et du Design, which didn’t live up to the 2011 edition.The Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris hosted the exhibition “Génération Design,” an event organized for the 25th anniversary of ELLE Décoration with the support of Ikea and the judicious appointment of Gérard Laizé, the director of VIA, as curator of the event.At the Paris city hall, the exhibition “Le dessein du Geste,” co-curated by Alain Lardet and Scott Longfellow, put design back at the heart of businesses and highlighted artisanal know-how and fabrication. The traffic intensity in the city caused by visits to galleries raises the question of how much real business is generated by the events. The same “trend” was seen in London where 100% Design tested a new configuration catering to opinion leaders: office, interior design, kitchen & bathroom, eco-design & build. The public had the opportunity to visit other venues of the London Design Festival,

namely Tent London and Superbrands, in Shoreditch or Design Junction on New Oxford Street where designers exhibited under their own names alongside luxury brands, retailers, and vintage galleries.In the Brompton Design District, The

Conran Shop celebrated the 25th anniversary of its move into the Michelin Building where fifty-odd brands and designers such as Jasper Morrison, Oku Sato, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, and Ross Lovegrove, were invited to participate in the “Red” exhibition: iconic pieces in red exclusively sold at The Conran Shop.The Victoria and Albert Museum placed itself in a strategic position on the British design scene with Thomas Heatherwick’s exhibition and Nendo’s installation, which was scattered throughout the museum.At the John Madjeski Garden, a dozen benches issued by Established&Sons and the product of a partnership between designers and businesses, celebrated the tenth anniversary of the London Design Festival.Everywhere, collections are becoming more functional and rigorous. Easy to process, wood is the material of choice. For small producers and self-producers, the festival is a means of expression and existence. The support of visitors who come to enjoy new objects and take pleasure in meeting and mingling with various design players contributes to the development of the economic model of the Design Week event. It which is a cultural and touristic capital for major international cities today.

The design shows in Paris and London were confronted with a difficult economic environment in September. The “off-fair” formulas of the Paris Design Week and London Design Festival generate a participation of collectives and showrooms. At events held in cities, public institutions also get involved in the design dynamic, resulting in the public’s unconditional support.
