Anorexia and Obesity

We´re a group of three girls, of the academy of CNAI, and we´re doing a work about anorexia and obesity. We maked some request and found some information abou this topics. Now we´re going to explain you this two problems about eat disorders =)

Anorexia

Anorexia is the decreased sensation of appetite. While the term in non-scientific publications is often used interchangeably with anorexia nervosa, many possible causes exist for a decreased appetite, some of which may be harmless, while others indicate a serious clinical condition, or pose a significant risk

Obesity

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.

Statistics of AnorexiaThe highest risk age group is between 14 to 18 years, although there are studies that extend the age from 12 to 25

years.It is estimated that anorexia nervosa affects between 0.5 to 3% of world population of adolescents, making it the

third most common chronic disease among this age group. Within groups of adolescents who are dieting, it is estimated that only about 20% have actually overweight, the rest are interested in losing weight without even

needing it.

About 90% of adolescents who diet are women. An estimated 1 in 100 children / adolescents suffer from anorexia, while about 3% develop bulimia. If you perform a differential evaluation of cases of anorexia nervosa in men and women, the percentage would be 5% and 95% respectively. Although in recent years, the gender gap will shorten.

Of all patients who receive treatment to combat anorexia, after 5 years, approximately 12% become chronic, increasing to 15% at 10 years.

The death rate due to anorexia, is between 3 to 5%. The overvaluation of thinness and culture of perfection that characterizes the world today has an impact on the psyche of adolescents and children. Each day, increase the cases of girls under 12 with eating disorders, which must be taken in time to avoid future complications that can even lead

to death.

Statistics of ObesityAs confirmed by the statistics and facts, obesity in the world is growing:

• According to the World Health Organization, in 2005 about 1600 million adults worldwide were overweight, of which 400 million were obese.

• In 2005 more than 20 million children under 5 years were overweight.

Consequences of anorexia

Several studies have shown that laanorexiaproduce, acortoy medium term, heart disease, electrolyte imbalances, reproductive abnormalities,

osteoporosis, stomach problems and changes in neurotransmitter activity.

Consequences of ObesityPreviously considered the overweight person as someone who was in good

health, but now we know that obesity has multiple negative health consequences. It is now accepted that obesity is a causal factor of other diseases such as cardiovascular disease, dermatological, gastrointestinal,

diabetes, musculoskeletal, etc.
