In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid theguns below.

We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe;To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flandersfields.

Concept: We often hear aboutshooting for a WIN/WIN situationwhen dealing with the businesscommunity. But what happens whenthe goal is to achieve a WIN/WIN/WIN situation? Well, the results atAmerican Training give a clearexample of what does happen whenthe business community steps up tothe plate, when a training companyspeaks business’ language and whentrainees have the skill needed in themarketplace. Everyone WINS!

“We have a stronger and deeperrelationship with businesses in ourcommunity than any other similar companynorth of Boston! They are not justcustomers, they are PARTNERS!”

Thomas M. Connors, President andCEO of American Training makes that boldstatement with all the confidence one wouldexpect from someone promoting theircompany. However, he goes one step furtherand backs up those statements withperformance that has been remarkable. AndAmerican Training’s recent BusinessBreakfast Awards (May 7th”2004 AndoverCountry Club), during this their 25th year inbusiness, certainly backs up the claim thatthe Business community loves what thecompany is doing!

Talk to Mr. Connors for any length oftime and you can immediately sense thefeeling of pride and admiration he has forwhat the Business Breakfast Awardsrepresent. “Our Partnerships with thebusiness community helps guarantee aWIN/WIN/WIN relationship for everyone!We can train till the cows come home. Ifthose skills aren’t marketable in today’seconomy we haven’t done our job. That isspecifically why businesses are activelyinvolved in every aspect of our programs;

from curriculum development to speakingto our Guests and finally practiceinterviewing. It makes all the differencewhen our Guests go out into the workplaceknowing they are speaking the language ofbusiness because they are who have beeninvolved in their training. Their level ofconfidence and resulting work are pricelessWINS for them.

Our Partners, the businessesthemselves, are thrilled when they interviewprospective employees who speak theirlanguage, understand the so-called softskills such as being on time and usingcommonsense and have meaningful skillsthat are valuable in today’s marketplace. They also have access to a reliable laborpool for jobs that might otherwise beoutsourced to other countries. That is a hugeWIN all around for them!

And American Training WINS whenwe see our efforts rewarded through ourgraduates getting jobs. That is why we arein business. The pride each of usexperiences with every single success makesit all worthwhile.”

From their philosophy of reinventingthe education and training industry throughFUN and Entertainment and solidperformance to back up his claims thisyear’s Business Breakfast Awards, sponsored by Sovereign Bank and hostedby Mr. Connors and Arthur Brady,Executive Director/ COO, recognized andsaluted the efforts of over 150 committedand involved businesses and organizationswho have Partnered with numerousDivisions within the company which focuson workforce development.

“We decided early on in our history thatwe would focus first and foremost onPerformance. It’s what business understandsand supports. American Training doesn’tjust work with the business community, we

Partner with them! That oneseemingly simple approachhas set us apart time and timeagain.”

What kind ofPerformance is used to back-up American Training’sclaims? Well, the numberscan be staggering. Packaging5 million Christmas cards forMuseum Masterpiece ofLawrence, MA; 450,000 keyboard switches for Cortron ofMethuen: 6.5 million cutlerypieces for Comet ofChelmsford; 4.2 millionjewelry boxes for Design Pakof Marlboro.

Add to that the hundredsof job placements into industry and you canmore clearly see the dramatic effectAmerican Training is having in ourcommunity and beyond.

“When you see CEOs and seniormanagement taking time to celebrate theirpartnership with any company you can beassured there is something very specialgoing on.

Our company doesn’t just hold anAwards ceremony. We turn even the simplestget together into a major EVENT! Werealize the value of our Partnerships withthe Business Community, the efforts of ourGuests and Colleagues and nothing short of

I recently wrote an article about Billy RayHawkins at the Buckley Transportation Center inLawrence. Since then, I have wanted toacknowledge the other two employees who sharethe daytime responsibilities with Billy Ray.

Today armed with my digital camera, I waslucky enough to catch Don Barchard and RayCusteau while they were on duty at the Buckley. They were glad to have me shoot a photo of themwhile they answered some questions I had aboutthe scheduled hours of operation, etc.

As shown in one photo, they are open 24hours a day, 365 days a year like the MuseumSquare Garage across from the Lawrence DistrictCourt. Both garages are open to anyone and thereare plenty of parking spaces available. Monthlyparkers continue to receive access cards and carwindow stickers when they register according toBen Wales, who manages both garages.

I asked if they will continue in business whenthe MBTA Transportation Center is built. Mr.Wales explained that the Buckley and MuseumSquare garages are public and are managed by theCity so they will continue to be in operation.

Thanks to all the garage employees, parkingin Lawrence will continue to be more convenientand friendly.

A Workshop on Creating a HealthyEnvironment for our Families

Recent studies show that many diseases can belinked in part to environmental exposures.

1 in 8 children in New England have asthma, 17% of U.S. children under 18 have oneor more developmental disabilities, an estimated 8000 children 0 to 14 years of age arediagnosed annually with cancer in the United States. The contributors to these trendsare complex - but the role of the environment deserves special attention because it is apreventable cause of harm. This workshop will provide an overview of the types of exposures you should be awareof, advice on how to prevent them and where to find safer alternatives.

Feeling pale? You may think that agolden tan looks healthy and attractive butsun worshippers beware: you could becausing skin cancer, the most common typeof cancer in the United States.

The disease can result from long-termexposure to sunlight, which emitsUltraviolet Radiation (UV Rays) thatdamage skin cells and can lead to one ofthree types of skin cancer: basal cellcarinoma, squamous cell carcinoma andmelanoma. While people should takeprecautions from sun exposure all year-round, protection is especially importantduring the summer months when the sun isdirectly overhead for a longer period andUV Ray levels are highest.

“Skin cancer, especially melanoma, canbe deadly,” says Lily Lai, M.D., skin cancerexpert at City of Hope Cancer Center in LosAngeles. “Fortunately, skin cancers arepreventable and highly curable if found andtreated early.”

Several risk factors increase the chanceof skin cancer, but everyone is at risk ofdeveloping the disease. Some of these riskfactors include: having fair skin that freckleseasily; living in warm climates with highsun exposure and/or high altitudes;occupational exposure, such as workingoutdoors; overall lifetime exposure to thesun; and having many moles.

Here are some tips to protect your skinfrom harmful UV Rays all year-round:• Avoid exposure to mid-day sun, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m., when UV Rays are most dangerous.• Use sunscreen with a sun protectivefactor (SPF) of 15 or higher whenever youspend time outdoors. Remember to reapplysunscreen every 1 to 1 ½ hours.• Wear protective clothing such as hatsand long-sleeved shirts that block the sun’srays.• Protect young children from the sun’srays. The damaging effects of UV Radiationcan begin in childhood.• Be careful when taking certainmedications that may cause the skin to burnmore easily. Check with your doctor orpharmacist to determine if your medicationcould be a problem.• Avoid sun lamps and tanning booths.

“Having a tan, natural or artificial, is asign that the skin has already beendamaged,” says Dr. Lai. “Since tanningbooths expose you to ultraviolet rays justas the sun does, using a sunless tanner isthe best way to get a tan without damagingyour skin.”

Congratulations to our favorite 6th gradersfor bringing home the Mass Rivals first everstate championship. In our first year as amiddle school program these kids haveaccomplished a great goal, going 7-0 overthe weekend to bring home the title. It wasa total team effort and took a lot of hardwork to accomplish this goal. Manydifferent players stepped up their gamethroughout the tournament each making bigplay after big play. If it was not Jason Ariasscoring basket after basket all weekend long,Jordan Santos pulling down almost everyrebound, or Mikey Herrara defending theother team’s best player it was someone elseon the team coming up with a key play.Again this was a total team effort andeveryone in our program should be proud!
