E mmaus might as well be Brigadoon. We hear of it in this one story—and it’s only in Luke—and then it disappears. The journey to Emmaus is one of the most beloved stories about Jesus, and yet the town is probably “mythical” in the truest sense. Like so much of life, this story is about the journey, not the destination. Running away from Jerusalem and their fears, probably going home in disillusion- ment, two of Jesus’ disciples encounter a stranger on the road who, like a rabbi, is able to help them understand their experi- ences using his deep knowledge of scrip- ture. Later, sharing a meal with him, they recognized the stranger as Jesus, and they return to Jerusalem to tell the others. How like our Mass—we hear the scriptures and an explanation of them, we share a meal, and then we go out to tell the good news. THE STRANGER Imagine meeting a stranger, a fellow trav- eler, who butts into the conversation you’re having with your friend. The two disciples in today’s Gospel are heading to Emmaus, seven miles away from Jerusalem, heart- broken and disillusioned. It’s the day of Jesus’ resurrection, but no one knew it when these two set out on their journey, maybe going home to resume their pre- Jesus lives because it seemed as if every- thing was over. In the middle of trying to make sense of the tragedy, some eavesdropping guy asks them about their troubles. After telling their story, the disciples are amazed to find this stranger able to piece together the frag- ments of the broken image of their master using scripture as the glue. Then it hap- pens—at dinner they recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread, just before he van- ishes. With their hearts burning with love and inspiration, they run back to Jerusa- lem—at night—to tell the others their new story. THE STRANGER/SHEPHERD The stranger in this story who turns out to be Jesus is reminiscent of the Gospel im- ages of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He seeks out his “lost sheep” who have strayed from the faith community, and the experience of the risen Lord transforms them into perhaps the very first evangel- ists, sharing their Good News with their friends back in Jerusalem. Are we transformed by the time we leave Mass? We should be! Our hearts should be burning within us from our experience of Jesus in word and sacrament. Yet how often life breaks our heart and clouds our mind! We stumble toward our own Em- maus, unaware that Jesus is with us. We are privileged to experience Jesus in every Eucharist through the breaking open of scripture and by the breaking of the bread. Like the disciples of the story, that trans- forming experience can compel us to go forth and tell everyone the Good News. E mmaus might as well be Brigadoon. We hear of it in this one story—and

it’s only in Luke—and then it disappears. The journey to Emmaus is one of the most beloved stories about Jesus, and yet the town is probably “mythical” in the truest sense. Like so much of life, this story is about the journey, not the destination. Running away from Jerusalem and their fears, probably going home in disillusion-ment, two of Jesus’ disciples encounter a stranger on the road who, like a rabbi, is able to help them understand their experi-ences using his deep knowledge of scrip-ture. Later, sharing a meal with him, they recognized the stranger as Jesus, and they return to Jerusalem to tell the others. How like our Mass—we hear the scriptures and an explanation of them, we share a meal, and then we go out to tell the good news. THE STRANGER Imagine meeting a stranger, a fellow trav-eler, who butts into the conversation you’re having with your friend. The two disciples in today’s Gospel are heading to Emmaus, seven miles away from Jerusalem, heart-broken and disillusioned. It’s the day of Jesus’ resurrection, but no one knew it when these two set out on their journey, maybe going home to resume their pre-Jesus lives because it seemed as if every-thing was over.

In the middle of trying to make sense of the tragedy, some eavesdropping guy asks

them about their troubles. After telling their story, the disciples are amazed to find this stranger able to piece together the frag-ments of the broken image of their master using scripture as the glue. Then it hap-pens—at dinner they recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread, just before he van-ishes. With their hearts burning with love and inspiration, they run back to Jerusa-lem—at night—to tell the others their new story. THE STRANGER/SHEPHERD The stranger in this story who turns out to be Jesus is reminiscent of the Gospel im-ages of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He seeks out his “lost sheep” who have strayed from the faith community, and the experience of the risen Lord transforms them into perhaps the very first evangel-ists, sharing their Good News with their friends back in Jerusalem.

Are we transformed by the time we leave Mass? We should be! Our hearts should be burning within us from our experience of Jesus in word and sacrament. Yet how often life breaks our heart and clouds our mind! We stumble toward our own Em-maus, unaware that Jesus is with us. We are privileged to experience Jesus in every Eucharist through the breaking open of scripture and by the breaking of the bread. Like the disciples of the story, that trans-forming experience can compel us to go forth and tell everyone the Good News.

Today’s Readings: Acts 2:14, 22–33; Ps 16:1–2, 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11; 1 Pt 1:17–21; Lk 24:13–35

Annunciation Church Please be assured that all Mass Intentions are being remembered during the celebration of our online Masses.

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacra-ment. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I em-brace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be sepa-rated from You. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael, Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen. Oraciones A San Miguel Arcángel

Scrip Program: One of the unfortunate consequences of our having to close the Parish Office to the public has been the suspension of our Scrip program. Thankfully, Mary Pat Wiard has volunteered to step in and “fill the void”. If you would like to pur-chase Scrip cards, please call her and she will let you know if the cards you want are available in our current inventory. If the cards are not in stock, or if you wish to place an order for cards we normally don’t carry, but can obtain from our Scrip provider, you can also contact Mary Pat and she will be happy to assist you. You can pick up your cards at her home. Mary Pat’s phone num-ber is: (626) 446-3474.

standing, kneeling and being seated, as we do in church. 3. Have the Act of Spiritual Communion ready. 4. Invite the whole family and, together, join in our celebration of online Mass. Prepare Internally: 1. Have a moment of silence. 2. Call the family together and say a prayer. 3. During Communion, recite the Act of Spiritual Communion together. 4. After the online Mass, recite the Prayer to St. Michael, Archangel. 5. Go to love and share the Lord; share the Mass—be a cyber missionary!

Lc 24:32
