THANK YOU SO MUCH
IMAGES OF A DECADEHonoring
Daniel Quintero Executive Director
KIPS BAY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB
On December 6, 1996 Daniel Quintero, whoattended Kips Bay as a youngster in the 1970s,walked into the Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse for thefirst time as Executive Director.
On December 6, 2006, Dan’s colleagues honoredhim at the flagship Palmaro Clubhouse for aremarkable 10 years of service. Mr. Quintero hasled an institution—already acclaimed as one of
the premier Boys & Girls Clubs in the nation—during a remarkable era of mission growth: Fromfour service locations and 5,559 Club Members in1996, to 10 locations and more than 13,000youngsters enrolled in 2006.
Here are just a few images from Daniel Quintero’sfirst ten years as Chief Professional Officer of KipsBay Boys & Girls Club.
Dan led the national movement to bring Boys & Girls Club services to homeless shelters. In 1998, Kips Baybegan on-site programming at two HELP shelters. Here, in 2002, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion(center) and Boys & Girls Clubs of America VP Glen Staron (far right) help inaugurate a Metlife LearningCenter at HELP Crotona Park North.
Education for digital literacy became widely availablethroughout our programming locations during the decade.
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion was in attendancefor Dan’s 2004 announcement that a graffiti-coveredabandoned building at 1835 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.will become our future West Bronx Clubhouse.
Power of the card! These residents from one of SchoolDistrict 8’s homeless shelters receive their membershipcards during a special winter recess program called“Studio in the Bay.” Created in 1998, “Studio” continuesin 2007, serving youngsters from a dozen shelters.
In November 2001, we honored our local 9/11 firstresponders and relatives with our emotional tribute atthe Palmaro Clubhouse.
Fritz and Marge Coudert cut ribbon for the Frederic R.Coudert Sports Complex domed athletic field in 2002.
Andre Barrett, at 5’ 9”, was MVP in 20 KipsBay basketball tournaments, excelled at RiceHigh School, starred at Seton Hall and cur-rently plays in the NBA.
New York Yankees’ Bernie Williams visitedoften, stayed late, and graciously answeredclub members’ questions.
Youngsters examine marine life at Fritz and MargeCoudert’s annual summer outing to historic Oyster Bay.
SCUBA is one of the many unique activities that KipsBay has offered in its wide ranging youth-developmentcurriculum.
Girl of the Year (in 1998) Maggie Velez (l.) welcomesOlympic Gold Medalist Tara Lipinski.
In the weeks after 9/11 Dan Quintero held impromptuconversations with youngsters to help them comprehendthe unimaginable.
Junior staff is both a teen program and a realsalaried job. Here junior staffer ElizabethBaez assists a youngster in the HomeworkHelp program.
Alberto Cruz (l.) and Clarence Leggett pose on stage at theGeorge Street Playhouse after a performance of “Twist” in1996. Alberto had title role; Clarence played Yancy.
K-Company, shown in 1999, delighted audiences fromWashington State, to Canada, to Florida, to Puerto Ricoto Bronx Street fairs.Lillian Quinones enjoys the Bronx’ only ice
rink, part of the Frederic R. Coudert SportsComplex at the Palmaro Clubhouse.
In 1997, a youthful Derek Jeter signs auction items dur-ing a clubhouse visit. Jeter’s “Turn 2 Foundation” hassupported us since 1996. (Dan looked younger then too.)
A sleeves-rolled-up Mayor Bloomberg, who has beenvery generous to Kips Bay, visited in 2005.
Joe Torre launched his “Safe at Home Foundation,”which fights domestic violence, at Kips Bay in 2005.
New York Mets slugging first baseman Carlos Delgadoreached out to us in 2006, and one day later gave us$25,000!
These youngsters, in summer 2006, were among the firstto enjoy Camp Sebago, our 10th and newest service site.
In 2000, Fritz Coudert (center) succeeded Arthur Rogers(right) as President.
Polly Fownes (right) and Sarah Woolworth are examplesof the wonderful voluntary leadership that has sustainedKips Bay over generations.
Manny Villafana (left), with Maribel Quintero, began hisKips Bay career at age 9 when he traveled from his housein the South Bronx to our last Manhattan clubhouse.
(l. to r.) Paul Ross, Cynthia Coudert, Eileen and CurtisMinnis are a few of the reasons why our special eventscontinue to provide a vital financial base for Kips Bay’smission growth in the past decade.
(l. to r.) Brian Flaherty, Judge Leslie Crocker Snyder, and Gary Crain—more of the shoulders upon which thegood work of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club stands.
Recognizing accomplishment builds character and self-confidence. Here Dan poses with 1997 Youth of theYear winners, Russell Johnson and Maggie Velez.
And the media came…but did not overly impress theyoung ladies of “The Bay.”
We thank you, our generous donors and friends, who make our mission possible.

Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club remains a bargain. Approximately $600 gives Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club to ayoungster for one year. We’ll do our best to help them to flourish and become leaders, as Denise St. Justand Nelson Gerena have done. Nelson, our 2003 Youth of the Year, is a third year honors student infinance at Baruch College, while working part time at Standard & Poor’s. Denise is close to the top of herclass at the elite CUNY Honors College, and a Mellon Fellow who plans a career in public-service law.
Help us build the future.
