Welcome to the 34th New Zealand Wine Annual Trade Tasting in London.

Today, you will be able to taste 474 wines from 103 producers and discover a range of grape varieties and styles from across New Zealand’s wine producing regions.

We are running two masterclasses with Peter McCombie, MW and a panel of winemakers with Sauvignon Blanc at 11.30am and Big Reds at 2.30pm. Please contact reception if you wish to participate.

There will also be two self pour tables, one taking a closer look at Chardonnay, highlighting the quality, diversity and regionality that New Zealand can produce. The other will focus on alternative varieties that are being grown New Zealand from Albariño to Wurzer and much more in between.

It has been a positive year for New Zealand wine in the UK. New Zealand wine has become the number two country of origin in the UK market for wine sold over £7 according to Nielsen data (MAT 21-6-14). New Zealand now sells 18% of all wines sold in this premium price segment, having overtaken Australia and now sits behind France. The latest statistics also show New Zealand’s average price per bottle has increased to £7.34 from £6.79 – an 8.1% increase (Nielsen MAT 21-6-14).

Sauvignon Blanc continues to be the most popular variety in the UK. We are delighted to announce that New Zealand will be hosting a celebration of our signature grape variety in 2016 and you could be in with a chance to win a trip – for further details see page 8.

The 2014 crop is up 29% on the harvest last year, with 445,000 tonnes of grapes harvested. This may seem like a drop in the ocean compared to major producers, but it was a record for New Zealand and signals the drive for export growth in the year ahead. Winemakers across the country are incredibly pleased with the quality and flavours of the 2014 grape crop. The larger harvest will enable the industry to meet strong consumer demand in established and new markets and support export growth.

All the wines shown today from the 2010 vintage onwards have been registered as being produced sustainably. 94% of New Zealand’s vineyard producing area is Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand certified and 7% is operating under recognised certified organic programmes – unmatched by any voluntary scheme around the world. More details on New Zealand’s sustainable winegrowing practices can be found on page 5 of this catalogue and on www.nzwine.com/sustainability/

Thank you for attending the event and if you have any questions please ask a member of the New Zealand Winegrowers team.

A LAND LIKE NO OTHERTUCKED AWAY IN A REMOTE CORNER OF THE GLOBE

IS A PLACE OF GLORIOUS UNSPOILED LANDSCAPES,

EXOTIC FLORA AND FAUNA, AND A CULTURE

RENOWNED FOR ITS SPIRIT OF YOUTHFUL INNOVATION.

NEW ZEALAND IS A WORLD OF PURE DISCOVERY, AND

NOTHING DISTILLS ITS ESSENCE MORE PERFECTLY THAN

A GLASS OF NEW ZEALAND WINE.

DISCOVER OUR WORLD.

New Zealand is one of the world’s youngest nations. Maori created its traditional cultural expression, and just as Maori artists today are reinterpreting ancient craftworks — such as kahu (cloaks, typically of feather, pictured) in new forms and materials — so our grape growers and winemakers are innovating in the vineyard and winery.

100% COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE

New Zealand’s wine producing history extends back to the founding of the nation in the 1800s. It was the introduction to Marlborough’s astonishing Sauvignon Blanc in the 1980s that saw New Zealand wine explode onto the international scene, courtesy of world beating performances in international competitions and rapturous critical reviews.

While Marlborough retains its status as one of the world’s foremost wine producing regions, the quality of wines from elsewhere in the country has also garnered international acclaim.

By world standards New Zealand’s production capacity is tiny, accounting for less than 1% of total volume. Though the average price tag for a New Zealand wine is a reflection of its desirability, few would question its ability to deliver excellent value for money.

In fact, it’s the unswerving commitment to quality over quantity that has won New Zealand its reputation as a premium producer.

This commitment is evident from the vineyard to the winery, along with sustainability leadership, New Zealand continues to pioneer advances such as canopy management, stainless steel fermentation techniques and screwcaps.

“For a small country with a relatively young wine industry (at least on the international level), New Zealand really has made a name for themselves over recent years. The wines retain an air of mystery that is somewhat unique in this ever-shrinking modern world of ours.”

SUSTAINABLE WINEGROWING NEW ZEALAND is integral to the ongoing success of New Zealand wine. Members are committed to protecting the unique places that make our famous wines by reducing the use of chemicals, energy, water and packaging, and reusing and recycling materials and waste.

PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY

BIODIVERSITY

SOIL, WATER, AIR

BYPRODUCTS

PEOPLE

BUSINESS

Without the wealth we’re able to harvest from animals, plants and microorganisms, humans couldn’t survive. New Zealand wine producers cultivate and nurture diversity in the vineyard.

ENERGY

CHEMICALS

Even though New Zealand draws most of its electricity from renewable sources, the energy demands of wine production sees the industry employing reduction strategies in all activities.

The world expects a certain quality from New Zealand wine; to maintain standards we need to mitigate against disease and pests. Chemical use on the vineyard, however, is the last resort.

Reduce, reuse and recycle are the watchwords in New Zealand vineyards and wineries. Many byproducts are routinely diverted from the waste stream and turned to beneficial use.

A sustainable wine industry is for the benefit of people, and its success depends on delivery by people. New Zealand wine producers take their community responsibilities seriously.

Sustainable practices enable wine producers to add value in a number of meaningful ways, while also making long-term cost savings and are therefore critical to the legacy of our wine industry.

Blessed with an array of distinctive soils, abundant fresh water and famously clear air,  our wine producers go to great lengths to take care of these treasures. Energy

AUCKLAND

One large wine operation finds energy efficiencies offer significant savings, so the winery employs heat recovery systems to store waste heat from refrigeration for use in winemaking. Night air cooling, and daytime illumination by natural light are two other successful initiatives.

Soil, Water, Air: Soil

CENTRAL OTAGO

For a winery with vineyards on flash flood-prone slopes, soil health is vital. To sustain their fragile soils they’re increasing organic matter by allowing maximum sward growth before mowing; judiciously applying compost-enriched bio-char, and balancing soil nutrient levels to preserve the low fertility that gives essential character to their wines.

Biodiversity: Wetlands

MARLBOROUGH

Rich in indigenous biodiversity, wetlands have high conservation value. One winery began restoring 50 hectares of wetland in 2004 and has since planted over 3000 native plants — with the help of staff and local communities. Along with positive ecological outcomes, the project has yielded wide-ranging business benefits.

Chemicals

GISBORNE

Each year, local ladybird populations boom in response to the numbers of the damaging pest mealy bug. “It takes some fortitude not to jump in and spray,” says one viticulturist, “but we endeavor to use no insecticides.” Planting cover crops to encourage ladybirds and other predators has significantly reduced use of chemical controls.

WHAT DOES SUSTAINABLE MEAN FOR NEW ZEALAND WINE?For us, sustainability means delivering excellent wine to consumers in a way that enables the natural environment, and the businesses and communities involved, to thrive.

Under our Sustainability Policy, wine must be made from 100% certified grapes in fully certified winemaking facilities, and certification must be through an independently audited programme.

Central to our sustainability policies is a commitment to keep improving, as new research is undertaken and new technologies are developed. We have an ongoing leadership role in industry research and development projects and, as a result, we’re helping to raise the global bar for sustainability.Seven “pillars” represent our key areas of focus, and we provide guidance and support around each to our members.

Page 7: Annual Trade Tasting London 2015

PREMIUM, SUSTAINABLE, DIVERSEAs an isolated, cool-climate island nation, New Zealand enjoys an undeniable advantage when it comes to producing distinctive, ultra high quality wines.

No place is more than 130km, or 80 miles, inland and the proximity of our vineyards to the ocean has a pronounced effect on the character of our wines. Mild, sunny summers and marked differences between day and night time temperatures in many regions slow the ripening of the grapes and allow them to develop

pure, intense varietal flavours. This is the foundation of New Zealand wines’ elegance and power, and helps explain their famed balance, structure and food friendliness.

And with growing regions extending 1,600km (1,000 miles) — from latitude 36° in the subtropical north to latitude 46° in the mountainous south (the most southerly vineyards in the world) — regional diversity is dramatic, enabling a striking array of wine varieties and styles to flourish.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

20,027ha*In 1973, as Marlborough’s first Sauvignon Blanc vines were being planted, no one could have predicted that their yields would attain superstar status within a couple of decades. The explosive flavours of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc have dazzled wine critics throughout the world, setting the international benchmark for the style. Pungently aromatic, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc assails the senses with green capsicum (bell-pepper) and gooseberry characters through lush passionfruit and tropical fruit overtones. Other notes include freshcut grass, tomato stalks, melons or limes.

PINOT NOIR

5,569ha*Native to Burgundy and notoriously fickle (it thrives only in the most optimal of environments), the Pinot Noir grape has found in New Zealand a home away from home. New Zealand Pinot Noir shows fine tannins and elegance with the added excitement of vibrant, intense fruit and secondary herbal, spice and game characters. The huge diversity in climates and soils in New Zealand enables a wide range of styles from the Pinot producing regions.

RED BLENDS

1,976ha*Syrah Distinguished by its bright, spicy flavours and elegant texture, akin to elegant Northern Rhône style, New Zealand Syrah is crammed full of plum and savoury black pepper flavours and sometimes even a hint of violets. Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot blends By augmenting the structure and finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon with the vibrant, ripe fruit of Merlot, winemakers in New Zealand’s warmer northerly regions are creating elegant, yet powerfully intense, red wine blends. These blends are notable for their purity of fruit expression and are known for being rich and well structured, showing characters of plum, blackcurrant and chocolate.

CHARDONNAY

3,211ha*The classic New Zealand Chardonnay is mouth-filling, with concentrated citrus & tropical fruit, balanced by crisp acidity & refined minerality. The warmer NZ regions typically yield full to medium bodied wines with round, rich flavours, whilst the cooler South Island regions tend to produce medium to light bodied styles with greater acidity, minerality & fresh citrus flavours. As a wine, Chardonnay strongly reflects New Zealand’s unique terroir and the huge diversity within its regions.

KEY VARIETIES (Planted hectares, 2014)*

AROMATICS

3,531ha*Riesling The South Island’s bright days, cool nights and long, dry autumns create the perfect climate for Riesling. Style ranges from bone dry to lushly sweet.

Pinot Gris Grown throughout the country, New Zealand Pinot Gris is more akin to Alsace in style than the drier Pinot Grigio, with notes of apple, pear, honeysuckle, spice and bread.

Gewürztraminer New Zealand Gewürztraminer is extremely fragrant, with rose petals, lychee, cinnamon and ginger characters commonly seen.

Protection during transportationIn the wine industry, our focus is on quality, and winemakers realise that quality in production means quality in consumption. However, shippers must also consider quality in transport to ensure the investment made in production is not compromised during transportation.New Zealand wine travels thousands of miles across the world through a range of climates. This journey exposes the wine to varying extremes of temperature and humidity, with the obvious risk to wine quality and packaging. We are demonstrating our unique VinLiner product a protective liner foil which is placed in dry shipping line containers to protect wine against:

• Thermal shocks• Contamination • Humidity infiltration• Container rain

More information can be found at www.VinLiner.com.

AkaruaLocated in Central Otago, the world’s southernmost winemaking region, Akarua was established in 1996. Austere, arid hills and valleys characterise the Bannockburn sub-region where Akarua has its 50 hectare vineyard and winery. Intensely hot dry summers are born from a close leeward proximity to the Southern Alps, stifling much of the inclement weather arising from the west. Soil condition is perverse, a combination of fragmented schist rock and light sand. Yet it is these extremes that extract the best from our vines and give rise to an amazing array of flavours and other qualities in Akarua’s range of stunning wines.

Astrolabe WinesAstrolabe Wines When winemaker Simon Waghorn decided to create his own brand he chose the name “Astrolabe” because of the historic ties with Marlborough and the connotations of exploration and discovery. All Simon’s skill and experience, combined with capturing the essence of Marlborough in wines of purity, focus and elegance. Of special interest to Simon are the unique qualities of sub regionality as expressed in the valleys wines, and how the sub regions can combine as Marlborough classics in the Province wines.

Greystone WinesGreystone Wines was established in 2004 in the Waipara Valley and is managed by Nick Gill as viticulturalist and Dom Maxwell as winemaker. We grow, vinify and bottle all our wine on site from our own vineyards. In 2010 the acclaimed neighbouring organic vineyard Muddy Water became part of the group and is still a standalone brand. Both vineyards specialise in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay off the unique Omihi limestone soils. In addition there is Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinotage planted in the nearly 200 hectares that make up the entire site.

Clos MargueriteClos Marguerite, clearly a very small vineyard by NZ standard, is perched on a north-facing, free-draining terrace of the Awatere River. At Clos Marguerite, “old-world” viticulture and “new-world” winemaking techniques are artfully combined by Jean-Charles, an experienced œnologue, agronomical-engineer and soil-scientist, who started his career in Bordeaux Chateaux before moving to NZ, to create unique, age-worthy wines. Marguerite and Jean-Charles grow their fruit on narrowly spaced rows of manicured vines. Handpicked, the grapes travel to the onsite gravity-fed winery. The resulting wines are a true reflection of the terroir, producing subtle yet intense, food-driven styles. The name refers to this “enclosed” and all-inclusive wine-growing concept.

Craggy Range Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. In 1997 Terry Peabody was introduced to MW, Steve Smith. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand, the climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two made an important decision from the beginning - select and source the best land in the country, and plant vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate.

Esk Valley Estate The Esk Valley Estate winery is situated in the north of New Zealand’s picturesque Hawke’s Bay. The winery sources fruit from Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough, as both regions consistently produce grapes of an extremely high quality. Esk Valley is a boutique winery, but it is unique in that many of the techniques used to craft its award-winning wines are dictated by the winery itself. The old concrete vats, the layout of the buildings, and the absence of modern technology mean the winemakers at Esk Valley have had to make wine in a simple, honest, hands-on way

Vidal EstateOne of New Zealand’s early wine innovators, Spaniard Joseph Vidal, converted a racing stable in 1905 into a wine cellar, which is today producing premium wines. Situated in the heart of Hawke’s Bay, this region is renowned for producing exceptional full bodied red wines and Vidal is an industry leader in this field with Syrah and Merlot Cabernet blends in particular. Vidal’s highly awarded winemaker, Hugh Crichton, produces 3 ranges; Estate, Reserve and the pinnacle of the Vidal range, Legacy.

Four Hawk Day Wines Landon-Lane/Janssen Family Vineyard

Our family have been growing grapes in Marlborough’s Waihopai Valley for 20 years. Our daughter painted the picture that inspired the Four Hawk Day label. When young, our children would play 'hawk spotting' on the ride to kindergarten. Seeing two or three was pretty special, but on the rare occasion they saw four hawks, it was the best day possible. We hope our customers have the best day possible when they drink our wine. In NZ we specialise in the on-trade as our wines are very approachable and easy-drinking. We seek English distribution or a supplier to the on-trade.

Jules Taylor WinesWines born of a person and a place, Jules Taylor, Marlborough, New Zealand.Jules launched her own wine label Jules Taylor Wines in 2001 with 200 cases of Pinot Gris and Riesling. In the intervening years those wines were joined by other varieties including her multi award winning Sauvignon Blanc. The wines we produce at Jules Taylor Wines are personal; that is, they’re wines that Jules likes. That’s why she makes them. They’re crafted from grape varieties that she has an affinity for and they’re made in a style that owes everything to belief rather than bottom-line.

Mission Estate WineryMission Estate is the birthplace of New Zealand’s commercial winemaking industry. The winery was established in 1851 by pioneering French Missionaries and remains under original ownership to this day. As one of New Zealand’s most experienced winemakers, Paul Mooney has been at Mission for over 30 years. Paul’s winemaking philosophies are heavily influenced by his mentor; Brother John, who trained in Bordeaux during the 1960’s. The winemaking approach at Mission is a blend of traditional old-world practise with the latest in research and technology. The focus is on developing elegant, food friendly wines of superior structure and texture.

New Zealand Winegrowers Table Clark Estate, Hans Herzog Estate & Rockburn Wines

Clark EstateClark Estate wines are pure, single vineyard wines with accredited sustainability from a small family vineyard in the picturesque Awatere Valley of Marlborough. Established in 1998 by Peter and Jane Clark, the vineyard is now 33 acres, predominantly in Sauvignon Blanc with some Pinot Gris and Riesling. It is a real family business with son Simon managing the vineyard and making the wine while daughter Sarah handles logistics, sales and marketing. Peter continues to look after the money and Jane takes care of the grandchildren.

Hans Herzog Estate / Hans Family EstateAs the name suggests, Hans Herzog’s roots lie in Switzerland where the family has grown wine since 1630. Since moving to Marlborough and planting his 12 hectare vineyard bordering the Wairau River in the mid-90’s, Hans adopted an experimentalist stance, cultivating an eclectic array of varieties. The organically-managed vineyard benefits from a warm, dry microclimate and Hans ferments at cool temperatures using wild yeasts, the white wines barrel-fermented in puncheons, the reds aged for 12-30 months in French oak, creating wines rich in varietal character. The boutique estate is widely acclaimed as one of the best in New Zealand.

Rapaura SpringsThe journey of our Rapaura Springs wines begins far from our Marlborough vineyards, at a point where the earth claims a share of the Wairau River. After a six month journey through a rocky aquifer, the water is released to a spring that weaves through our Rapaura vineyard. This spring, depicted on our label, provides both the crystal clear, pure, water for our vines and guides the philosophy behind our family winery. Premium fruit, from vineyards across the various Marlborough sub-regions, create distinctive wines that capture all of the regions fine flavours.

RibbonwoodAt the heart of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley lies the original Ribbonwood Block. Located just north of the Renwick township on Conders Bend Road, the 15 year old vines are planted on an unusual east-west direction, the resulting shade on the south side of each row produces more herbaceous fruit than other sites in Marlborough. The fruit from this vineyard, and that from carefully selected sites nearby, is essential for producing the expressive aromatic and vibrant fruit flavour components for which Ribbonwood wine has become known.

Saint Clair Family EstateSaint Clair Family Estate is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1978. Grapes were originally supplied to local wine companies; however a desire to extend the quality achieved in the vineyard through to the finished wine led to the establishment of Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. Neal Ibbotson combines his extensive viticultural expertise plus Marlborough’s mix of climate and soils with the talent of one of New Zealand’s leading winemaking teams, led by Matt Thomson and Hamish Clark. Tiki Wine & VineyardsAt Tiki we believe great wine is created in the vineyard and is an expression of place, people and time. With this in mind we selected Marlborough in NZ as the region where the world's best Sauvignon Blancs have been crafted over the last few decades. We then searched Marlborough for high altitude terroir that would produce wines of elegance and distinction. We selected three vineyards in the upper reaches of the famous Wairau Valley and spent years nurturing these vineyards, and building a team of passionate people to produce low yielding grapes of outstanding quality.

Waipara WestWaipara West is situated on north facing terraces along the Waipara River, 45 miles north of Christchurch. Only handpicked grapes from our own vineyard are used for our wines. As the yields, in all varieties, are so low, the wines are generally intense and have an inherent structure. Our winemaking is aimed at retaining rather than enhancing these characteristics- allowing a framework for each wine to develop and evolve in bottle to provide a wine with complexity and interest.

New Zealand Chardonnay - Self Pour Seminar

Elegant and fruit-driven, the classic New Zealand Chardonnay is mouth- filling, with concentrated citrus and tropical fruit. A crisp acidity balances the flavours, which are often perfectly rounded with oak. Its versatility makes Chardonnay a perfect canvas for viticulturists and winemakers eager to craft a masterpiece.

Please note the self-pour tables will not be available to taste in the consumer session. If you would like more information on individual wines please ask a member of the New Zealand Winegrowers team.
