Providing opportunities to
“The personal development workshops
made me think about what I want from
my career. It made me realise that I
have a lot of transferable skills and to
go for a career in housing.
I wouldn’t have had the
confidence to change direction
without the Open
Doors course.”

“I am so happy that I’ve had this
opportunity to develop my skills.
Before going on the course I
could only get work as
a labourer as I wasn’t
qualified. It’s enabled
me to start building a
career for myself.”

“Working through Starting Point has been
brilliant. It’s given me a professional base so
now I can ‘go to work’, rather than work
out of my front room at home. It also has
a good grounding in the local community,
so I have many new
contacts. I would definitely
recommend it to
anyone starting up a
business.”
-
“From the in-house facilities they
provided, to the training and
quarterly reviews, Starting Point
was simply excellent in ensuring
that we were on track
to reach our goals and
aspirations.”

“The trips were interesting and
helped us decide what we are
going to do in the future. I’d like
to work for someone like
Morgan Stanley who we
visited. Before the
course I didn’t think it
would be possible.”

Paper Mill Place has achieved an
Eco-homes Very Good rating which
is equivalent to Code for Sustainable
Homes Level 4.

measure that was in place before
the Code for Sustainable Homes
became mandatory for social
housing and new builds in 2008.
“It’s a nice, warm house. My
previous house was very cold but
this house stays warm
all the time. I am very
happy here.”

“It’s been really good. They don’t just do
sports, they do drama and arts too. The
drama brings out my son’s confidence
and he can make new friends. All the leaders
are approachable and easy to talk to.”

“Not speaking English as my first
language dented my confidence,
but I got help with this during
my placement which
has really helped.
My favourite part of
the placement was
meeting tenants and
helping people.”
31THAMES
“I am now feeling
more motivated and
committed than ever
before and I hope my
experience shows
others in foyers and
the community what they can
do if they put their mind to it.”
