Darnell Huff, winner of this year’s Senator William V.Roth, Jr. Achievement Award, is not someone you’relikely to forget. Suffering from Mental Retardation andAdjustment Disorder, Darnell has faced manychallenges in his life including unstable housing, financial worries and behavior issues.
In 1992, Darnell was referred to Goodwill and enrolledin the Retail Skills Training Program. After successfullycompleting his training at Goodwill, Darnell wasemployed as a Retail Clerk in the New Castle store inSeptember of that year. During that time, Darnell facedand overcame many challenges…but eventually foundhis stride…as well as family stability with his fostermother and her children. Now, after 16 years, Darnellis still employed at Goodwill – as a productionassociate in the Fox Run store in Bear. A fixture in thestore, Darnell takes the time to greet customers everyday - putting smiles on their faces – and the faces ofhis fellow co-workers. His consistent work abilities, flexibility and remarkable, infectious personality makehim an instant favorite with everyone he meets.
Today, through his training and work at Goodwill,Darnell has established his independence – able tomake his own decisions and take charge of his ownresources - and is a living testament to the life-changing power of work.

Lawanda Lucas, recipient of this year’s PersonalAchievement Award, has a warm smile that is reflectedin her eyes. Born with a learning disability whichprevents her from performing complex tasks, Lawandastruggled for many years with the frustration ofmaintaining a steady job. In March of 2003, Lawandawas referred to Goodwill and enrolled in the WorkAdjustment Training Program. During her training,Lawanda was able to learn and retain basic janitorialassignments. Each and every day, she would challengeherself to not only do what was asked…but to exceedwhat was expected of her. After completing the programin June 2003, Lawanda was hired by Goodwill in theGateway Store in Dover.
For the past five years, Lawanda has continued to workfor Goodwill. She has blossomed with increasedconfidence and self-esteem. She has been a perfectemployee – rarely missing a day – and she enjoys herjanitorial work because she likes to stay busy and keepthings clean.
Over the years, Lawanda has excelled because she isdetermined to succeed. Even through difficult timesincluding knee surgery and the recent loss of hergrandmother, Lawanda has soared. She is hardly everwithout a smile now… and the light reflected in her eyeslightens the hearts of the people around her. Lawanda’ssimple dedication and drive to succeed is an inspiringtestament to the impact of the Goodwill mission and theempowerment of the human spirit.

GeraldKaneGerald Kane, this year’s Graduate of the Year, was truly aman down on his luck. In addition to a visual disability, some legal troubles in 1994 prevented him from findingdecent employment. With no family to rely on, Geraldstruggled with homelessness and hopelessness.
In September of 2006, Gerald found Goodwill. Heenrolled in the ShopRite Training Program and, aftercompleting training the following month with exceptionaltest scores, Gerald was placed at ShopRite as a cashier.Even though he continued to live outside for a time–Gerald never missed a day of work. It was difficult for himbut with the help of Goodwill, he found a place in ahomeless shelter and, finally, a place to call home.
Throughout his turmoil, Gerald went to work and gave100% each and every day – which eventually landed hima promotion to a Maintenance position - a position moresuited to his interests and experience.
With the help of Goodwill, Gerald has put hopelessnessbehind him and emerged a new person – with a smile onhis face and a skip in his step. Gerald is a prime exampleof a story that is all too common in today’s world – but hisdetermination to overcome his barriers and focus on thefuture make him an inspiration to all – and a compellingexample of the Goodwill mission at work.
