Annual Report 2 0 1 1 - 2 0 1 2

To nurture toward compassion, to balance toward wholeness, to

challenge toward excellence and achievement — these are

the goals to which the Waldorf School of Garden City

aspires. Based on the insights of Rudolf Steiner and enriched

by the diversity of our community, our methods of teaching

reflect an understanding of the growing child and acknowledge

the spiritual origins of humanity.

The Class of 2012 College Acceptance ListThe Waldorf School of Garden City is proud to announce that students from the Class of 2012

have been accepted to the following colleges and universities:

3

When I think of our

School, I picture an oasis

in the desert, offering

needed sustenance to

parched throats in the

arid landscape of

American education.

Here at Waldorf, we strive for our students

to understand the world not solely through

their eyes, but soulfully through their hearts

as well.

As the proud parent of three Waldorf alumni,

I know the strength of Waldorf education and

its capacity for bringing out the unqiueness of

every individual and of cultivating the inner

being of our children.

Today, we stand at a crossroads. There are

those who want to eliminate art, music,

drama, outdoor education and field trips from

our nation’s schools.

Then there are those who believe our children

should learn through creativity. That by

infusing education with the arts and other

activities that spark the imagination, we

cultivate independent thinking in our

children, and strengthen their inner character

today, so that they will be better able to

succeed tomorrow.

It is no secret where we at Waldorf stand on

this debate. Here we nurture and develop our

children to instill in them a love of learning

and of creative thinking so that, when the

time comes, they will have the self-confidence

and the resources to deal with an ever-

changing world.

Your support enables us to stem the tide of

desire to fill our young students exclusively

with facts at the expense of their childhood.

Have confidence in the path you have chosen

for your children. Let their smiles and

laughter, their love of life and of learning,

inspire you and be a beacon to others.

It is my sincerest hope that one day, all will

see the value of what we – with your help –

have so carefully nourished here. When that

day comes, we will no longer be merely an

oasis, but a lush garden extending as far as

the eye can see.

Message from the

Board ofTrustees

b y J a y D o r m a n , C h a i r

The ongoing

financial

management of

our School is truly

a “balancing act” –

one which requires

the School’s Board

of Trustees and

administration to carefully weigh the

impact of each and every financial

decision – from the rate of annual tuition

increases, to the School’s policy on

tuition assistance, to our ability to

provide strong and consistent salary and

benefits to the School’s employees. This

equation is not an easy one to balance,

but the thoughtful and responsible work

of the Board and its Finance Committee,

combined with the dedication and

commitment of our faculty, staff, current

parents, and extended community has

kept the Waldorf School of Garden City

a strong and healthy institution. Each

year, Board members and I meet with

current parents for a “Forum on School

Finances,” the purpose of which is to

ensure transparency regarding how

financial decisions are made, to review

the current operating budget, and to hear

the thoughts and concerns of our parent

community.

With tuition income representing three-

quarters of the School’s total operating

revenue, retention of current students is

our most important priority. However, we

continue to look for ways to augment the

School’s revenue – whether through

increased enrollment in the summer

program or the introduction of new

student programs – such as the English

Language Learners program which was

established for the upcoming school year.

A thoughtful and strategic approach to

expense increases also ensures the

Waldorf School continues to experience

balanced and sustainable growth.

Looking ahead, we are forecasting a 4%

increase in enrollment, with well over one

hundred students enrolled in the High

School – the largest in our 65-year

history. This good news is tempered by

the reality that our need-based assistance

continues to increase. Approximately

50% of our current families receive some

form of tuition assistance, and almost

half of those families have more than one

child enrolled in the School. We fully

recognize the economic challenges facing

parents, and we continue to commit to a

strong and flexible program of need-

based assistance.

Message from the

School Administrator b y S u s a n B r a u n

We love our parents!

Parent involvement

is a key factor in

educating healthy

human beings. The

faculty and I at the

Waldorf School of

Garden City count ourselves blessed to

have a flourishing relationship with our

parent body. Over the years we have

established a partnership that has

resulted in over 1,000 successful

graduates.

Each child’s educational experience at

the Waldorf School is significantly

enhanced through their parent or

guardian’s participation in the ongoing

life of the School. Working together to

provide activities and events, and as we

gather in celebration of festivals and all-

school assemblies, the School strives to

provide a strong and wholesome model

of community participation which is an

essential part of Waldorf education.

Having events where we can cultivate

this relationship are like pearls in the

yearly calendar. Beginning with our

orientations for new parents and

students in the lower and middle

schools – as well as the high school

orientation trip at Camp Glen Brook –

we have many opportunities for sharing

and connecting. This is a time when I

meet with the parents. We establish our

common values and share our goals

and principles of this Waldorf

education. Class parent evenings are

opportunities where we build and

establish trust between our teachers and

parents. Together we prepare for the

Fall Fair. Together we guide and

support the students through the

college application process. Together,

we let them learn through mistakes,

knowing that they are stepping stones

towards maturity and independence.

Using these many touch points in the

year, it is our goal and our joy to

continuously reinforce the relationship

between parents and teachers, building

on it towards a fertile ground for the

education and raising of children.

The parent-teacher relationship is of the

utmost importance. This is a

partnership – teachers and parents

coming together over the profound

responsibility of educating and nurturing

the healthy development of an individual.

The Parent

Association is

happy to report

another

prosperous year.

The 2012 Fall Fair

grossed over

$27,000, and the school’s photo day

photographers brought in an

additional $1,600. The Magic Closet

(our Craft Center) run by current

parent Marlena Seminario, raised

close to $10,000 in profits for our

Parent Association fund.

With this amount, the PA was able to

give $14,000 back to the school by

purchasing new shades for the high

school, lower school and cafeteria.

This addition gives the rooms a fresh

new look and we have received

positive feedback from the faculty

and staff. Also, our Varsity Basketball

teams received over $1,600 for

Waldorf warm-up suits. Now, when

our young athletes visit other

schools, they make a notable first

impression. Additionally, the PA

Senior Scholarship donated $2,500

to the winner of the essay contest.

Our goal for open interaction

between the parents and school

governance has continued this year

with the three co-chairs being

invited, once again, to the December

board meeting. We would like to

thank the Board of Trustees for

supporting our efforts in keeping

these lines of communication open.

Our monthly Friday morning

meetings were well attended, and this

year we introduced guest speakers to

our meetings. These speakers

included Brian DiUbaldo, our

Guidance Counselor. Chris Bleecker

and Carol Proctor spoke about

admissions. Elizabeth Cohen gave a

presentation on how the library is

being utilized by our students.

Robert Ingenito spoke about our

website, Leonore Russell presented a

brief overview of the Foundation

Studies program and Sabine Kully

gave a lecture on our media policy.

On behalf of my co-chairs, Daryl

Smalls and Nina Justman-Wozniak, I

would like to say thank you for all

your support, and we look forward

to a thriving 2012-2013 school year.

At the heart of our

work in the Office

of Development

and Alumni

Relations are the

people. In

everything we do,

we focus on

engaging our community in

meaningful ways to keep everyone

informed and connected to the School.

We have been fortunate to learn about

the positive impact of Waldorf

education over the years in so many

lives near and far. Through

contributions to the Annual Fund, our

donors make it possible for the next

generation of students and families to

benefit from Waldorf education.

Last year we kicked off our Annual

Fund with a matching gift challenge.

Thanks to a group of current and

alumni parents who funded this

match, $40,000 in new and increased

gifts was raised. Almost 100 donors

were inspired to give for the first time

or renew their support, while 130

donors increased their gift over the

previous year. Our fundraising year

concluded with a wonderful event at

Lincoln Center in Manhattan. Thanks

community attended a world-class

performance by the Paul Taylor Dance

Company and raised $20,000 for our

Music Program.

To all who gave of their time, talent

and financial resources – thank you!

Be assured that your contribution made

a direct impact on our School and we

can’t do what we do without your

support. In this time of increased

financial uncertainty, we do not take

your support for granted.

With the celebration of our 65th

Anniversary, we look forward to our

Spring Gala Dinner on Friday, May 10,

2013 at the Garden City Hotel. Please

join us for a memorable night.

H.A.W. and Mabel Pew Myrin,

passionate supporters of Waldorf

education and among the founding

members of the Waldorf School of

Garden City, established legacy gifts

that have provided crucial support to

our School for over 50 years. In 1960,

the Myrins established the Waldorf

School Trust, which not only supports

our School, but it also funds Waldorf

institutions throughout the country.

In recognition of her philanthropic

vision, the Mabel Pew Myrin Legacy

Society was created in 2003 to

recognize individuals who, like the

Myrins, include the Waldorf School of

Garden City in their estate plans.

There are a number of ways that you

can make a legacy gift to the Waldorf

School of Garden to qualify for

membership in the Mabel Pew Myrin

Legacy Society:

• Name the Waldorf School of Garden

City in your will or living trust

• Designate the School as a beneficiary

of your retirement plan

• List the School as a beneficiary of

your life insurance policy

• Establish a gift that provides lifetime

income for you or a loved one

By affirming your deep commitment to

the Waldorf School of Garden City

through a legacy gift, you join our most

dedicated supporters and inspire others

to follow your path. Additionally, you

allow us to recognize your generosity

and foresight by including you in

special events at the School.

If you have already made provisions in

your estate plans or would like

additional information about the Mabel

Pew Myrin Legacy Society, please

contact Marjorie P. Jean-Paul, Director

of Development, at (516) 742-3434.
