2018 was a year that focused on engagement with the government and the media. Our continued relationship building efforts with the provincial government led to further consultation with Pharmacists Manitoba.

Our staff were busy in August with the move to our new office, as well as with government relations and media requests. Pharmacists Manitoba CEO, Brenna Shearer, spoke at a press conference held by the government to announce their renewal of the Manitoba Medication Return Program. Board member Doug Thidrickson represented Pharmacists Manitoba at the Pharmacare Advisory Council Consultations in August and at a CPhA meeting in September. Pharmacists Manitoba’s government relations efforts for this year led to several notable achievements including our initiation of discussions with the provincial government about the pharmacist’s role in smoking cessation strategies, delay of the implementation of the Pharmaceutical Distribution Rate Changes until November 1, 2018 and a formal meeting with Health Minister, Cameron Friesen.

Events such as the Valsartan recall and the EpiPen shortage helped the media recognize us as an important source of information for a variety of healthcare related stories. Pharmacists Manitoba’s President, Barret Procyshyn, was busy this year representing our members in the public eye with plenty of media requests for interviews, helping us to continue to build a positive relationship with the media and ensure our message is heard.

Pharmacists Manitoba will continue to engage the Manitoba government and to advocate on behalf of our members. We look forward to helping the provincial government improve Manitoba’s healthcare system by utilizing the professional skills of pharmacists to provide more accessible and timely healthcare.

We thank YOU, our members, for your continued support. Together we can build a future in which pharmacists in Manitoba are recognized and compensated for the full scope of services they are able to provide.

MEMBERSHIP & PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE REPORT

4 |PHARMACISTS MANITOBA 2018

The data from the purchase of memberships and professional liability insurance from 2017 - 2018 shows us that many Pharmacists Manitoba members see value in obtaining insurance through us.

The most purchased level of professional liability insurance was basic ($2 Million per occurrence /and $4 Million aggregate) at 63%. Premium ($5 Million per occurrence and aggregate) came in second with 31% of those becoming members or renewing their membership purchasing this level. Supplemental insurance is offered to individuals who already have insurance coverage through their employer and want coverage for potiental gaps in their employer's policy. 6% of polices pur-chased were supplemental insurance ($3 Million per occurrence /and $5 Million aggregate).

The number of purchases of basic liability insurance has decreased over the past 3 years, the numbers for premium and supplemental professional liability insurance have increased. This suggests that more members are feeling that they need to increase and augment their coverage.

In Canada’s public health care system, government policies will always play a large role in shaping the environment for our professional members and the patients we serve. In this setting, Pharmacists Manitoba has continued its work to improve the provincial government’s understanding of the role and value of pharmacists in Manitoba’s public health care system and to position our organization as a partner to be respected and engaged with on matters affecting both patients and the profession in general.

Throughout 2018, we made steady progress in this regard. Concerns regarding the changes made to the generic drug pricing framework across the country were shared directly with former Health Minister, Kelvin Goertzen, and his senior advisors. Minister Goertzen attended the Pharmacists Manitoba Conference in April, along with further engagement opportunities, which helped foster a positive connection between the organization and his office. Our discussions have established the basis for a much stronger working relationship with the Minister’s office, one which continued following a shuffle of the Manitoba Cabinet in the summer and the appointment of Cameron Friesen as the new Minister of Health.

Shortly after Minister Friesen’s appointment, Pharmacists Manitoba was front and centre at a major news conference hosted by the provincial government. CEO Dr. Brenna Shearer was invited to bring remarks alongside Health Minister, Cameron Friesen and Sustainable Development Minister, Rochelle Squires, as the province announced a renewed partnership with the Health Products Stewardship Association to continue its Manitoba Medications Return Program for five more years. This was an excellent platform to remind Manitobans of the importance of proper disposal of expired and unused medication.

Of course, challenges remain. The Manitoba government surprised many with changes to the Pharmaceutical Distribution Rate last fall. Working in cooperation with allied stakeholder organizations, we were able to achieve a two-week delay in the implementation of these changes. This delay sent a strong signal to department officials regarding the importance of real consultation with our members. This was followed by an in-person meeting between representatives of Pharmacists Manitoba and Minister of Health, Cameron Friesen. Stemming from this meeting, a new formal consultation process is nearly complete, and we hope to share details with all of you in 2019.

GOVERNMENT RELATIONSMoving forward, we will continue lobbying the provincial government to showcase the abilities of our members. Through-out our efforts in 2018, and into 2019, the voices and stories of our members have been invaluable, and we urge you to continue sharing them with us and our team, so we can ensure they are fully and effectively represented to the Manitoba government.

I LOVE MY PHARMACIST STUDENT EVENTPAM 2018 started off with then Health Minister, Kelvin Goertzen proclaiming March 2018 Pharmacists Awareness Month. Pharmacists Manitoba kicked off Pharmacists Awareness Month with our social media campaign, I Love My Pharmacist.

This year we asked pharmacists to hand out I Love My Pharmacist stickers to staff and patients who were invited to share a photo of themselves wearing their sticker on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #IloveMBpharmacists.

Everyone who shared was entered in a draw.

Our 2018 PAM Contest Winner was Marikka Lee. Marikka received a Winnipeg Jets Jersey autographed by Jacob Trouba, which was generously donated by Pharmacists Manitoba member Arnold Chew.

College of Pharmacy SPEP-1 Project: Pharmacy Services Survey

First Year pharmacy students David Fuss, Kathleen Klippenstein and Sojung Kim created a survey for their SPEP1 project under the supervison of Pharmacists Manitoba. The College of Pharmacy SPEP 1 Pharmacy Services Survey 2018 was conducted to gain a better understanding of the current expanded pharmacy services that are being provided across Manitoba. A total of 53 pharmacies from across Manitoba responded to the survey.

The College of Pharmacy SPEP 1 Pharmacy Services Survey 2018 identified that pharmacies across Manitoba are activelypromoting expanded services that pharmacists are able to provide with additional training. The survey also established that for the majority of the services, pharmacies are charging a fee. However, there remain pharmacies across Manitoba that provide expanded services for free.
