Every four years, the presidential elections inject JSA’s civic engagement programs with additional vigor, and 2012 was no exception. In addition to debate-watch parties for students and alumni, we held special regional election conferences and week-long programs at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. This year, while many of our elected officials in Washington were stymied by political gridlock and hyper-partisanship, JSA student leaders nurtured their statesmanship skills as they engaged in civilized political discourse. Through our student-run programs they cultivated democratic leadership skills, challenged one another to think critically, advocated their own opinions, developed respect for opposing views and learned to rise above self-interest to promote the public good. On top of the growth in our student-run programs this year, we are particularly pleased to highlight a substantial increase in individual giving and a reduction in the percentage of total revenues devoted to administrative expenses. These trends have put us in a great position for the next fiscal year. I am excited by what 2013 has in store for JSA. CEO’s MessageI am pleased to report that 2012 was a very successful year for JSA. Every four years, the presidential elections inject JSA’s civic engagement programs with additional vigor,

and 2012 was no exception.

With your support and generosity we will continue to build our programs and prepare America’s youth for life-long involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society!

Chapter Activities Junior State chapters are school-sponsored extracurricular clubs that typically meet weekly to plan and implement voter registration drives, candidate forums, political fairs, debates and community service projects. JSA is recognized as the place for students who are interested in politics. Student leaders gain valuable skills as they build and run clubs. School administrators and faculty recognize that JSA chapters augment the social studies curricula and enhance civic engagement for the entire school community.

John Burroughs H.S. JSA Wins 2012 National Civic Impact AwardEach year, the National Civic Impact Award recognizes the JSA chapter that has had the biggest impact on increasing the level of civic awareness and engagement at their school. During the 2011-12 school year, John Burroughs High School’s JSA Chapter from Burbank, California was chosen from among finalists from throughout the country.

In addition to having 110 tax-paid members members and record attendance at conventions, the chapter held debates on school issues, hosted an impressive array of local politicians as guest speakers, attended school board and city council meetings, hosted two “mini-conventions” for the Angeles Region and collected over $700 for local charities. The chapter also livestreamed all of its speakers and events for the community to enjoy. Together with their Principal, they organized a campaign called “Don’t Hate, Debate,” which promoted civil discourse and passionate debate instead of hate and prejudice.

In winning the award, the Burroughs chapter will receive a $2,000 grant to continue its civic engagement programs in the upcoming year, a $500 stipend reward to the chapter’s Teacher/Advisor and a plaque that can be displayed in the school’s award case.

The other winners of the state Chapter of the Year Awards were: Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, NJ; Colfax High in Colfax, CA; Corona del Mar High School in Corona del Mar, CA; Galway High School in Galway, NY; International School in Bellevue, WA; Kofa High School in Yuma, AZ; Mooresville High School in Mooresville, IN; Union Local High School in Belmont, OH; Garfield High School in Seattle, WA; and St. Mary’s Hall in San Antonio, TX.

Conventions JSA sponsors over 30 overnight conventions each year (Fall State, Winter Congress, Spring State). These events are debate- oriented and allow students to discuss economic, social and foreign policy with their peers. Conventions are held in ten different regions across the country. Roundtable discussions, policy simulations and other hands-on activities help students critically examine the political landscape. At the Winter Congress, students experience “how a bill becomes a law.” Past topics have included: the death penalty, abortion, the legalization of marijuana, the “Dream” act and others.

Beyond the Sound BiteAt the JSA Election 2012 one-day conferences, representa-tives of the Romney and Obama campaigns captured the thrill and excitement of the election season. Students had the chance to evaluate the candidates on their merits, quali-fications and positions on the issues. The conferences were a unique opportunity to look beyond the sound bites and TV ads to determine the best candidate to lead the country. Dramatic mock elections were held to select the students’ choice for president.

Teens Journey to the RNC and DNC ConventionsEvery four years JSA takes a group of students to the Demo-cratic and Republican National Conventions. This year students attended symposia at the RNC in Tampa, FL, August 26-31, 2012 and at the DNC in Charlotte, NC, September 2-7, 2012.

The 2012 Election Symposia gave the students a unique opportu-nity to experience the excitement of a Presidential election year in the center of the action. Students participated in Q&A sessions with party officials, Members of Congress, other “super delegates,” journalists, powerful lobbyists, interest group activists and pollsters. Throughout the week faculty provided academic context to help the students digest and analyze the convention experience. Evening activities included group discussions, student debates and simulations.

Grant from U.S. Department of the Interior Supports Summer School Students from U.S. Insular AreasOver the past 22 years JSA has partnered with the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs to provide scholarships for students to attend JSA Summer School programs. During the summer of 2012, JSA served 68 outstanding students from the seven insular entities. These students hailed from American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau.

To improve the experience for students from the insular territories, JSA also hosted a prep program at Princeton and Stanford. This program was designed to help the students prepare for the academic rigors and cultural differences that they might experience at Summer School.

Summer Institutes Institutes provide a behind-the-scenes look at local politics and state government in action. These 4-day programs offer students an opportunity to explore and debate today’s hot-button issues with elected officials and fellow high school students. Students have the opportunity to meet and question top politicians, journalists, key lobbyists and others influential in the civic sector.

Engaging Parents and Alumni

Parent of JSA Alumnus Instrumental in Creating Arizona Junior State Melody Robidoux, the parent of a JSA alumnus in the Pacific North-west, declared 6 years ago that there would be a thriving Junior State in her native Arizona.

With $670,000 in financial sup-port from the Robidoux Founda-tion over the last 5 years, the Arizona Junior State has grown from nothing to 30 high school chapters and over 370 students attending its state conferences. It also hosts a 4-day Summer Institute on State Government and Politics.

Ms. Robidoux, an inspired philanthropist, sought to reach out to a broad cross-section of Arizona youth to create a JSA that reflected Arizona demographics. As a result, the Arizona Junior State is the most diverse in the country.

Alumni & Parent GatheringsJSA maintains an active parent and alumni network across the country by hosting events and providing opportunities for alumni to engage with current JSA students.

Presidential Debate Watch Parties October 3, 2012 • Washington D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco Alumni enjoyed a fun night of debate, political discussion, food and drink. The four sites were connected with a live Twitter feed and an instant nationwide online poll using the PollEverywhere technology.

Fall State Parent & Alumni Reception November 17, 2012 • Fort Lauderdale, FL Parents and alumni watched a live student debate, followed by a reception featuring Southeast JSA Governor Kathryn Edmunds and her cabinet.

Online Alumni Portal LaunchedIn 2011, JSA undertook a large-scale nationwide survey of alumni, resulting in the first edition of the JSA Alumni Directory. Over 4,500 alumni were in-cluded, going back as far as 1946. In 2012, JSA launched an online version of the directory, which makes it easier for alumni to reconnect with their peers and harness the power of the JSA alumni network. Over 7,500 JSA alumni are now a part of this online community.

Alumni, parents and supporters can also connect and keep in touch with JSA via Twitter, Facebook, Linked In and YouTube. Follow the hashtag #bethepeople.

Three-Year Strategic Plan AdoptedAt a special meeting on November 17, 2012, the Board of Directors adopted a new Strategic Plan to guide the efforts of the Foundation for the next 3 years. Harvard Business School Community Partners provided their services pro bono, guiding the JSA staff and Board through an 8-month process. The plan identifies and outlines the following strategic objectives:

1. Strengthen JSA’s core by improving the number, size and presence of chapters.

2. Roll out coordinated national content to increase visibility, support activism and encourage inter-chapter coordination.

3. More fully integrate the School Year and Summer Programs to make them mutually supportive.

4. Improve financial sustainability through increased revenue from development initiatives.

5. Align Foundation resources and develop organizational capacity to support the strategic plan.

We are looking forward to implementing this plan to help JSA grow stronger and increase our national profile.

Impact  Statement  Over  the  next  three  years,  the  Junior  Statesmen  Foundation  will  focus  primarily  on  improving  the  quality  of  its  existing  programs  and  strengthening  financial  sustainability  in  order  to  increase  the  number  of  informed,  engaged  student  leaders  from  all  backgrounds  in  our  American  democracy.
