Messages fr om the CEO & C hai r

Adrian WattsManaging Director & CEO

The 2017-18 financial year has been another year filled with significant achievements on the back of the immense effort and commitment by the NHC team.

Over the past 12 months, the NHC has successfully expanded outside the ACT with the opening of its new Clinic in Yass, NSW. The local community has strongly welcomed their new Clinic having accessed well over 1,000 bulk billed consultations in the first few months of operations.

The NHC team is also expending a vast amount of work on the new Clinic at the Australian National University which is sowing the seeds of significant growth in the accessibility of the NHC in Canberra. When this Clinic opens in 2019 the NHC will be within walking distance of thousands of students, residents and office workers, providing unparalleled access to affordable health care to Canberra’s City centre and surrounds.

The local community continues to be highly supportive of the NHC’s work, which is seen through an over 20 per cent increase in patients over the past 12 months and continued good will in the

community for their co-operative.

The NHC is now well on its way to its delivering its objective to provide access to affordable health care for all Australians.

This past year has been another exciting period in the maturing of the NHC. We are now the largest provider of primary health care services in the Canberra region providing services to over 43,000 patients, an increase of 22 per cent from last year.

Over the past 12 months, we have continued the investment in the organisation’s capability and future expansion projects that will provide a solid footing for the organisation going forward, and most importantly, further increase access to affordable health care for our current and future members.

Since August 2017, we have been partnering with the Australian National University (ANU) to support and enhance their health services on campus. This service will further expand in 2019 with the opening of a new health facility in the heart of the campus. This new Clinic will provide services to ANU students, staff and our broader membership. Importantly, this will bring back bulk billing services to Canberra’s city, which is more important than ever with its increasing residential population.

The NHC has also continued its important public education work holding seven member education sessions, which saw hundreds of people learn about various medical conditions and preventative measures they can take.

Our clinics have continued to perform strongly, delivering more than 180,000 bulk billed appointments. I am incredibly proud of this result and the tangible positive impact the NHC is having on our community’s access to affordable health care, and I am excited by what the future holds.

O verviewThe National Health Co-op (NHC) is a not-for-profit, member owned co-operative that provides affordable medical and healthcare services to the communities where it operates. Our overarching goal is to provide access to affordable healthcare for all Australians, significantly reducing instances of preventable diseases and lessening the personal and societal impact of chronic conditions.

Our beginningThe NHC was formed in response to a lack of General Practitioners in the northwest Canberra region of West Belconnen, a suburban area of 20,000 people. This issue came about due to medical practices progressively closing in the area over the preceding years and an increasing shortage of General Practitioners in the region.

In the hope of addressing this issue, in September 2004 a number of community organisations and local residents convened a public meeting. Out of this meeting, a community representative committee was formed, which included a small executive committee. The executive committee was tasked with trying to find solutions to the situation.

In December 2006, the committee re-formed as a registered co-operative, the ‘West Belconnen Health Co-operative Ltd’. Eventually capital funding was found to enable the opening of its first GP clinic in the suburb of Charnwood in January 2010.

In September 2014, the name was changed to the ‘National Health Co-operative Ltd’ (NHC) in recognition that the Co-op had opened several clinics in the north and south of Canberra and was planning to further expand geographically in Canberra and beyond.

Our futureThe NHC currently employs over 100 medical and administrative staff across nine clinics in Canberra and regional New South Wales. The NHC services approximately 15 percent of the ACT’s population, as well as a significant number of residents in the broader Canberra region.

The NHC is currently in the early stages of a national expansion which will see the establishment of clinics throughout Australia with a priority on areas that are under serviced, particularly in regional locations. The NHC expects that this will require in excess of 200-250 clinics nationally.
