As Chairman of the School Board of Mount St. Michael Academy, I am still amazed at what can be accomplished on the corner of Murdock and Nereid Avenues. The work of the members of the school board is truly outstanding and what they have been able to achieve working together along with our President Peter Corritori, our principal Bro. Steve Schlitte, and the administration and faculty is a real statement on our dedication, understanding, and realization of the mission at The Mount. Working as a team, we set the agenda and provide practical real world experience to help the Mount and its leadership achieve its goals. I would also like to compliment the Mount St. Michael Golf & Tennis committee that worked again as a team to put together one of the finest and most successful golf outings to date. The 27th annual event saw a record turnout of participants even though the golf was rained out. The dinner which honored Rich Tinger ’63 was very well attended and the subsequent makeup date in September had another wonderful turnout to make the 2017 outing very memorable. The outing’s proceeds fund scholarships for two incoming freshmen students for four years which includes an eighth grader from the Junior High School. The remaining proceeds from the outing were used to totally renovate a bathroom in the main building near the front entrance and gym. The annual outing – along with other Mount events – brings alumni and friends of Mount St. Michael Academy together to raise funds for our beloved school and its students. There are various other ways that our alumni and friends can help support our mission. Our S.A.M.S. (Sponsor a Mount Student) program has been a convenient and successful way to help a student and his family achieve what we have: a degree from the Mount! The Annual Fund, endowed scholarships, bequests, volunteering time along with real world experiences and donations from reunions can and do make a difference to all students in the broad spectrum. As we enter our 92nd year of providing dedicated Catholic college prepartory education to young men, your contributions mean so much and touch not only the students but their families, too. Our alumni are the Mount’s most formidable asset. No matter what advanced schooling or career paths our alumni have chosen, the common denominator at any reunion, class gathering, or school event, is the solid foundation we received at The Mount. Anytime you mention The Mount, there is always a positive and fond remembrance of the school and what it stands for. Currently, the Mount is planning for the future with upgrades throughout the campus including changes to building infrastructure, renovations of classrooms, and its recent installation of a solar panel system. The distribution of Chrome Books is such a game changer that aids in research and daily assignments for each and every student and member of the faculty. Most importantly, the increase over the past several years in student enrollment at both the high school and the junior high school levels is the most positive and gratifying sign of The Mount’s readiness for the future. Thank you to our school board, administrators, and faculty who continue to generously give time and resources, and most especially to all our alumni and friends who continue to show support and contribute to a school that for the past 92 years has made a difference for so many young men and their families.

Forever Mount men, forward we go!

While our 90th anniversary went by very quickly, I am pleased to share with you that The Mount has had another successful year. One in which we remained financially strong, stayed true to our mission, watched our students excel, continued to execute our strategic plan, Vision 20/20, and gloriously celebrated an anniversary that marked our tradition of education that has been a pillar in the community for more than 90 years.

On September 13, 1926, the first day of school, the brothers welcomed 62 students. Since that time, The Mount has educated generations of young people in the Marist tradition by providing them with a high-quality Catholic education while teaching all Mounties to be “good Christians and good people with hearts that know no bounds.” Over the nine decades, we have graduated more than 20,000 students. We came as boys and we left as men. Our alumni have gone forward and contributed to society in every walk of life. No doubt they have made numerous contributions, big and small, and in the process made the world a better place. Our work has made The Mount, the Marists, our families and communities proud. Our school’s educational standards and core values have endured to this day. As with those that came before them, The Mount will be transformative for today’s students. A Mount education will positively change our students’ lives as well as those around them. It is your generosity and support that continues to enable us to sustain the mission of Saint Marcellin Champagnat and the Marist Brothers. Thank you all for your prayers, enthusiasm, financial support, continued belief in our great school, and for all you do for The Mount! Our fiscal year ended with net assets of $8,903,108 which is $738,627 less than the prior year. This is a direct result of $800,000 in Mandated Services payments owed to us by New York State, that were not received (these monies are subsequently expected to be awarded in 2018). Although the State’s lapse has resulted in some financial constraints, we remain on a solid financial footing. Through your generosity, contributions for the year, including monies raised at our 90th Anniversary Gala, totaled $1,539,457. Driven primarily by gains in our investments, our endowment grew from $3,827, 584 to $4,130,666 or 7.9% and it continues to grow. I am also pleased to share with you that enrollment grew by 3.6% which bodes well for future recruitment.

Most importantly, our students continue to excel. Students in all grades earning honors increased from last year’s 32% to 38%. I continue to be impressed by the outstanding accomplishments of our seniors. The Class of 2017 college acceptance rate was 98% and 96% of the class started college in the fall (two have joined the armed forces while others pursued professional paths). Amongst other colleges and universities, Mounties were accepted to Dartmouth, Duke, Rochester Institute of Technology, Ohio Wesleyan, Virginia Tech, Penn State, NYU and George Washington as well as perennial favorites Manhattan College, St. John’s, Fordham and Iona. In total, these Mounties have been accepted into over 500 colleges and have been offered more than $15 million in merit-based grants and scholarships! The outstanding academic accomplishments of our students would not be possible without their hard work and that of our principal, Bro. Steve Schlitte and our great team of teachers, administrators, counselors and coaches. They are the backbone of our school. With love and tireless dedication they teach, coach, inspire and guide our students. We thank them for their great work and dedication to our mission. My sincere thanks, as well, to our School Board and the Marist Brothers for their guidance and support; without it we could not prosper. We continue to invest in the modernization of our 22-acre campus. This past year we spent $1,439,804, on much needed upgrades and repairs to our more than 90-year-old facilities. Most notable was the conversion of two more classrooms to high-tech learning environments and additional enhancements to our state-of-the-art IT system. As an enhancement to our athletic facilities and through the generosity of our friends and alumni we constructed four batting cages (two indoor and two outdoor), and totally renovated our varsity baseball field. We also refinished and repainted our gym floor. As part of our capital improvements we were burdened with $915,796 spent on emergency repairs primarily to replace a leaking roof and repair the parapets at St. Paul’s Hall.

Last year I shared with you our ambitious and aspirational five-year strategic plan, Vision 20/20. More than two years into it, we remain committed to our plan and continue to be totally focused on its execution to achieve our goals, as we believe this is our path to ongoing success. Specifically we set out to focus on the following pillars:

1. Above all else, continue to support and enhance the mission of St. Marcellin Champagnat and the Marist Brothers.

2. The delivery of high-quality college preparatory academic programs with differentiated instruction and curriculum.

3. The effective use of cutting edge technology in the teaching/learning process at all grade levels.

4. Regular upgrading and modernization of The Mount’s facilities and grounds to ensure a conducive learning and safe environment.

5. An appropriate array of co-curricular and extracurricular activities and offerings to facilitate the education of a well-rounded student and adult.

6. Financial stability that allows re-investment into The Mount.

7. Increased enrollment by 250 students by the 2018-19 school year (this will need to be bolstered by increased donations for unrestricted entities like our Annual Fund and restricted scholarship programs like S.A.M.S., both of which provide financial aid.)

8. The effective design and implementation of marketing programs to attract human and financial resources to enhance the strategic goals developed within the plan. The Mount has a rich history rooted in faith, success and a relentless commitment to excellence. We are all very proud of our past, but are obligated to look to and prepare for an exciting future and the promise it holds for our school and our students. The “Mount brand” is not just a tagline or a logo, it’s a promise; a promise we make to our students and their parents, and a promise that we will continue to uphold and do more to exceed. Together we will continue to make good on this promise. With your continued support I am confident that The Mount’s future will remain beckoningly bright

Sincerely,

Peter P. Corritori, Jr. ’71 President & CEO

Our academic year continues to move along at a lightning pace. Many great things are happening at The Mount and I am pleased to share some of them with you. It is, of course, due to the support of our many benefactors like you that many of these innovations can take place. Thanks for your help in moving the Mount forward. Technology: has taken a great leap forward this year. We integrated Chromebooks into our daily use in the classrooms in Grades 6, 7, and 9 in September with the remaining grades receiving them in February. Our textbooks are digital, and the use of Google Classroom enables our teachers to post lecture notes, videos, PowerPoint presentations, graphs, charts, and other pictures to enhance student learning. By all accounts, this has increased student engagement. Virtual High School: The Mount has partnered with Virtual High School to offer online courses to our upperclassmen in subjects not traditionally offered in our curriculum. As a pilot program in 2017-18, it will be expanded in the 2018-19 academic year. Our students are able to take classes in Russian language and culture, Mandarin Chinese, Introduction to Engineering, Investing, and Advanced Psychology just to name a few. Online learning is very much the wave of the future and we want our students to be proficient in this type of innovation. Bantz Honors Program: Our re-named program for our most gifted students, honors Brother John Bantz, FMS, who served at The Mount as a teacher, JHS Principal, Guidance Counselor and President at various times. These students will take highly accelerated courses (starting with the AP course as freshmen), online courses, as well as leadership training and cultural enrichment opportunities. Our current students are highly successful and their progress honors a man who truly loved The Mount. Bro. John would be proud! “Rigor all around”: is our theme for the academic year. Each of our teachers is working to raise the expectation level in each of his/her courses. We have also raised expectations regarding behavior and personal grooming. Why? We noticed that the number of Honor Roll Students has increased every year while the number of students who are failing has dramatically decreased. In short, our students are quite capable of achieving more. We are raising the bar, and our students are meeting – and exceeding – our expectations. Athletics and Extra-Curricular Activities: These vital components to the Mount student culture continue to engage our young men outside the classrooms. At the time of this writing, we are celebrating the recent victory of the Varsity Basketball Team over rival St. Raymond’s High School. Our Architecture Club is presently working with Ray Beeler, a volunteer architect, in designing and renovating the “Garth,” the Brothers gardens. The ever-popular Paws for Peace is planning their next visit to the local animal shelter, and our Fencing Team competes in interscholastic meets. Our students are fond of saying “There is something for everyone at the Mount.” The variety of activities and students participating in them certainly demonstrates that! Please come and visit whenever you can. We’d love to show you around and we know you’ll be impressed with the Mount of today! Thank you for all you do to enable us to continue our mission, in the tradition of the Marist Brothers. Ad astra per aspera!

Sincerely,

Brother Steve Schlitte, FMS Principal

The Admissions Office is always operating in “full gear” as we head towards a recruitment cycle with the hopes of solid 9th Grade and Junior High School classes. The preliminary statistics look promising on both fronts with projections of 170-180 for the freshman class, and 35-45 for the incoming 6th grade class. These next few months are quite busy with phone calls, emails and constant follow-ups to secure these numbers. I’m confident we can get there! The pool of students continues to be strong from our top feeder schools such as St. Francis of Assisi, Nativity, Holy Rosary, Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Grace, just to name a few. However, we are always pursuing all students throughout the Bronx, Manhattan and southern Westchester, from both Catholic and public school settings. With no increase in tuition for the next year, The Mount continues to be a “good buy” as far as a private, Catholic education goes. The challenges continue to be financial aid and scholarships, however, the generous donations from our alumni and friends make our education possible for so many deserving young men. One new, exciting change from the Mount Scholarship Division, is the John Bantz Scholars Program. All students that receive an Academic Award will be placed in this prestigious program highlighting the top students in our school. These men face a rigorous curriculum and are challenged to maintain a GPA of 90 or above. We are proud to name this after Br. John, and I know he’s proud of it, too! On a side note, please don’t ever hesitate to contact me regarding a prospective student whom you feel would be a great fit for The Mount. I always welcome suggestions and input from our alumni and friends when it comes to filling up our classroom desks in both the high school and junior high school.

Go Mount!

HIS STORY OF MOUNT SAINT MICHAEL ACADEMY is dedicated to the generations of “Mounties” and to the countless women and men, lay persons and Marist Brothers who have labored to make the Mount a Catholic school of excellence fulfilling the educational challenge of Saint

Marcellin Champagnat “to make Jesus Christ known and loved” among the young.

The history of the Mount is rooted in a wider story that precedes the school’s founding in September 1926 by one hundred and ten years; a story of a saint whose love and care for youth continues to be the hallmark and life giving spirit of Mount Saint Michael.

In every age the Church raises up women and men, who under the impulse and guidance of the Holy Spirit, proclaim the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Marcellin Champagnat was one such person. Being raised within a devout Catholic family, Marcellin at age fifteen responded to the call to become a priest to assist in the work of re-evangelizing French society. Ordained for the Archdiocese of Lyons in 1816, Marcellin was assigned as parish priest to the parish of La Valla located in the rural mountains in southern France. In October of that same year, Marcellin was called to the sick bed of a young man who appalled him with his lack of rudimentary knowledge of the Catholic faith. Champagnat experienced this as a defining moment in his life, resolving that no child should remain ignorant of the gospel of Jesus Christ. On January 2, 1817, he founded with two young parishioners, a group of Brothers who would labor for the Christian education of youth, especially the most neglected. “To make Jesus Christ known and loved” became the guiding inspiration of Champagnat’s small congregation.

From two Brothers in 1817 to more than three thousand Marist Brothers worldwide today, the vision of Champagnat has been blessed by God. Mount Saint Michael Academy is both heir and participant in this vision. Its history as an extraordinary Catholic school bears retelling since the fruit of its labor for the sake of Jesus Christ is a profound testament to God’s fidelity, a fidelity evident in the school’s past and the promise of its future.

Looking Back on 90 Years

/ 1926 Mount Saint Michael staffed by fourteen Marist Brothers opened its doors to sixty-two boarding and day students on September 13, 1926. Along with Brother Mary Florentius, the founding Principal, Brother Leo Vincent and Brother John Lawrence were members of the original faculty; subsequently each becoming Principal and Director of the Mount in ensuing years.

/1927 The Main Building and the Powerhouse were dedicated and blessed, along with the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel which prominently stands at the school’s entrance, by Msgr. Michael Lavalle, Rector of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and delegate of Patrick Cardinal Hayes, on May 8, 1927.

/1928 In March 1928 construction was begun on the first cinder track, one third of a mile in length.

/1929 September, 1929, Saint Paul’s Hall was added to the campus buildings to expand the recreational and dormitory facilities for the boarding students. The Mount becomes known to the surrounding neighborhood as the “big school up on the hill!”

Stock Market Crash of October, 1929, ushers in the Great Depression. Although only in its fourth year of existence, Mount Saint Michael Academy was influenced by this national economic disaster that cast its shadows over American society until the beginning of World War II in 1941.

/1930 Adding an additional class with each ensuing year, Mount Saint Michael graduated its first class in June, 1930.

/1935 The arrival of Howie Smith, a recent graduate of Notre Dame University and an enthusiastic and versatile coach in several sports. Howie became a “Mount Legend,” leading the school to

numerous city championships in football and baseball for the following 45 years.

/1937 Signifying the venerable place given to Blessed Virgin Mary in Marist education, a statue under the title of Queen of the Mount was presented to the school by “her loyal Mountaineers” in 1937.

/1938 The school year 1938-39 saw a record enrollment for the Mount with a total of 702 students.

/1940 The northeast corner of the campus, originally the site of a small lake whose tributary ran through the property to Pitman Avenue, was covered by thousands of tons of “fill” in order to construct a football field. The field, dedicated on May 19, 1940, is named after the generous contractor, Mr. Patrick McGovern, who donated the landfill in order to accomplish this task.

/1943 Dr. Anthony Cerrato treated Clement Boyan, his “first patient” at the Mount, who became a Mount “Gold Star” Alumni, giving his life in the service of his country at the end of World War II. Dr. Cerrato became a fixture at the Mount being an outstanding physician to Brothers and students until his retirement at the end of the 1970’s.

/1951 The honor roll to Mount Saint Michael graduates serving in World War II was made by Brother Paul Ernest. To this eventually would be added at its center the list of the GOLD STAR ALUMNI, those thirty-nine graduates of the Mount who had given “the last measure of devotion” in the service of their country. From the remembrance of these distinguished alumni would come a dream to honor them in a most fitting way - the construction of the Memorial Gymnasium Building.

The Memorial Building, at the time of its blessing and dedication by Francis Cardinal Spellman, on the Feast of Saint Michael, September 29, 1951 boasted the largest gym in all of New York State. It also contained a library, sixteen classrooms, a recreation hall for boarding students, a fully equipped kitchen and cafeteria that could sit 350 students.

/1959 Brother Joseph Damian returned to his beloved Mount in 1959 after having successfully served as Marist formator in Esopus, New York. He would remain at the Mount until his death in 1988.

/1962 Brother Patrick Eugene Magee, followed by Brother Bernard Garrett and Brother Kevin Moran, served as Principal of the Mount during the 1960s. All excellent classroom instructors, they assumed administrative leadership of the Mount when its enrollment would exceed 1600 students. These Marist Brothers prepared for and implemented the awarding of the Middle States Secondary School Accreditation in 1962 recognizing and strengthening the Mount’s academic excellence.

The Vatican Council, summoned by Pope John XXIII in October 1962, had a profound influence on the life of the Catholic Church universally and on the Mount community in particular. Religious instruction shifted from a catechetical and apologetic approach to being based in Sacred Scripture.

/1960s The Vietnam War would also dramatically touch the Mount community. Reminiscent of World War II, several young alumni would give their lives in the service of their country. Michael Cunnion ’63, a well-known athlete, would be one of these alumni. A plaque and flagpole, located at the west end of McGovern Field is dedicated to their memory.

/1976 Terrence Cardinal Cooke, the Archbishop of New York, celebrated the Mount’s Golden Jubilee in 1976 with the blessing and rededication of the Mount and the Administration Building, referring to the Mount as being synonymous with excellence - academically, spiritually and athletically. The Marist Brothers teaching staff numbered 31 and the lay faculty numbered 40.

/1982 Mr. Paul Daigneault became the first layman to serve as Mount Principal in 1982, placing an emphasis on mutuality in Marist education between the Brothers and laity. Upon the death of Paul Daigneault, Brother Anthony Iazzetti ’61 arrived as Mount Principal. Quick to assess the needs of the school, he moved to renovate the ground floor of the Main Building adding a new faculty room along with refurbishing the science labs and opening the new computer center on the fourth floor.

/1989-90 Many a student has passed through the “back door” of the Main building on the way to and from school. Renovations of this area in 1989-90 on the ground floor, included the enlargement of the Bookstore and the addition of elegant trophy cases and a statue of Saint Marcellin Champagnat.

/1992 Brother Anthony Iazzetti ’61 was instrumental in having the Mount declared a “blue ribbon school” in 1992 when it received the National Exemplary School Award bestowed by the Education Department of the United States Government.

A division of the principal’s role into two administrative positions was undertaken with the appointment of Brother Anthony Iazzetti as School President and Brother James Kearney returning to the Mount as School Principal.

/1997 Brother John Bantz, ’56 assumed the role of President of the Mount in 1997. As an alumnus, teacher, guidance counselor, moderator, coach, and Principal of the Junior High School, Brother John’s long association with the Mount assured the school of a promising and bright future in the fast approaching millennium. Brother Michael Mullin became Principal in 1998. In December of 1998 the Mount was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as “an outstanding American High School.”

/1999 Rejoicing was the by-word of the entire Marist world when on April 18, 1999, Pope John Paul II canonized Marcellin Champagnat declaring him a saint. A Mount delegation joined over 40,000 Marist pilgrims in Rome to witness the Church’s affirmation of Marist education in general and Mount Saint Michael’s Marist education in particular.

/2000 September 29, 2000, once again the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, witnessed the opening of the Academy’s seventy- fifth jubilee year. Brother John Bantz presided over the re-dedication and Blessing of a refurbished Mount Saint Michael track located on McGovern Field. This blessing committed the Mount to once again hosting track and field events for the Catholic High School Athletic Association as it had for many prior years. The new track and field was dedicated in honor of Brother Linus Eugene Carroll, Mount math teacher, coach, moderator, and former Principal of the Junior High School whose love of track and coaching ability remains unparalleled.

/2006 Appointed as president in 2006, Anthony Miserandino, Ph.D., strengthened the academic programs, increased fund raising and alumni participation, launched a capital campaign to support the long-term needs of the school, and oversaw needed capital upgrades to the facilities over his nine-year tenure.

/2015 Peter P. Corritori, Jr. ’71 is selected as President and CEO. Mr. Corritori’s extensive business experience complement Brother Steve Schlitte’s talents as principal, giving The Mount an effective combination of business and academic leadership. Major renovations and capital improvements begin including the refurbishment of The Mount Café (cafeteria), modernization of classrooms and other academic spaces, the shoring up the envelope of the nearly 100-year-old facilities, and the installation of indoor and outdoor batting cages.

/2016 Mount Saint Michael Academy begins a year-long celebration of its ninetieth anniversary with a series of events held throughout the 2016-17 academic year.

he 90th anniversary was commemorated by services that bookended the academic year. On the Feast Day of Saint Michael the Archangel, September 29, Mass was celebrated by His Excellency, the Most Reverend Dennis J. Sullivan, DD, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Camden, New Jersey and distinguished member of Mount St. Michael Academy Class of 1963. On March 27, His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, served as principal celebrant and homilist at a liturgy which drew a large crowd of students, alumni, Marist Brothers, parents, families and friends. He also acknowledged the 200th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Marist Brothers, and gave his appreciation

to all of the Brothers in attendance. During the mass, Cardinal Dolan was declared an honorary member of the Mount Saint Michael Class of 2017. After the conclusion of mass, he called the entire senior class up to the front of the gymnasium to take a class picture.

n Saturday, October 1, 2016 The Mount celebrated its 90th Anniversary with a Gala held on campus. It was a wonderful evening with more than 200 alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends joining together to celebrate nearly a century of service.

Guests were greeted by valet attendants and entered the campus via the Nereid Avenue entrance to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the new Mount Café. They were then led into the incredible Richard Tricario Sports Center & Gymnasium which was transformed into an elegant ballroom where they enjoyed a sit-down dinner and danced the night away to music provided by a live DJ. The spoken words by student speaker Yaw Mensah ’17, were powerful and drew a thunderous applause. This past June, Yaw became the sixth Mensah son to graduate from Mount St. Michael Academy. Political analyst-turned-Master of Ceremonies for the evening Basil Smikle ’89 reminisced about his days at The Mount and expressed his appreciation to The Mount for providing him with the foundation necessary for a successful collegiate and professional career. Addressing the attendees, School President & CEO, Peter P. Corritori, Jr. ’71 said about his alma mater, “We are here tonight to celebrate The Mount’s 90th anniversary; our mission, our legacy, our success and our future. On September 13, 1926, the first day of school, the brothers welcomed 62 students. Since that time The Mount has educated generations of young people in the Marist tradition. We came as boys and we left as men.” The Mount St. Michael Community remains grateful to all of the attendees and sponsors for making this 90th anniversary gala a night to be remembered.

STUDENT LIFE

200 AND COUNTING FOR COACH V

Mario Valentini ’69 Notches His 200th Career Win On Saturday, October 22, 2016 in a game against Moore Catholic, Mount St. Michael Academy’s Head Football Coach, Mario Valentini ’69 posted his 200th career win in his more than thirty-year career as head coach of the Mountaineers. This accomplishment adds his name to a short list of great coaches who have reached this milestone. As a student at The Mount, Valentini played quarterback under legendary coach Howie Smith. Coach Valentini started his coaching career in 1974 at Westchester Community College where he coached the receivers and quarterbacks for five years. Valentini joined the Mount staff in 1979 as an assistant to Joe Tricario Sr. where he coached the defensive backs and served as Defensive Coordinator.

Coach Valentini became only the seventh Head Coach in Mount St. Michael history in 1984 and has a record of 171-91-1. Under Coach Valentini’s guidance the Mount has won three Catholic High School Football League (CHSFL) City Championships in 1992, 1996 and 1997 and made appearances in the 1986, 2006 and 2007 finals. Valentini is quick to share credit with all of the coaches and outstanding athletes he’s had the opportunity to coach over the years for the tremendous success The Mount football program has achieved. Mr. Valentini also serves as the school’s Athletic Director and Department Chairman of Physical Education. Congratulations, Coach V!

FUTURE ARCHITECTS

Early exposure to the design and construction industry, encouraging interest in pre-professional studies Through a partnership with the American Institute of Architects of Westchester & Hudson Valley, Mount Saint Michael began an Architecture club in fall 2016 to “offer students interested in architecture an expanded knowledge in building materials, new concepts in design, and new techniques in building construction.“

Among the club activities, included field trips to the award-winning Bronx Central Library and firm offices where students learned firsthand about the team it takes to design and build a complex structure like the library and other projects. In spring 2017, students designed a brand new sports complex for The Mount, utilizing various methods including drawing, computer aided design (CAD), and modeling.

MOUNT PLAYERS PERFORM HAIRSPRAY!

The Mount Players showcased their talents during the April 7 to 9 run of the spring production of Hairspray. The Tony Award-winning American musical is based on the 1988 John Waters film about a girl who achieves her dream of performing on a televised dance show in 1960s Baltimore and works to integrate the show in the process. The musical featured a talented and diverse cast of students from Mount St. Michael Academy and other nearby schools. The production transformed Murdock Avenue to Broadway under the direction of Marc Silva, principal of nearby St. Francis of Assisi, along with music direction by Stacy Penson and choreography by Jessica Santomassimo. We invite all in The Mount Community to the Richard J. Tricario Sports Center each spring to take in high school theater at its very best!

MOUNT ST. MICHAEL WINS 2017 ARCHDIOCEAN HOOPS TITLE

Mount St. Michael Academy’s varsity basketball squad defeated the CHSAA AA Division Intersectional playoffs with momentum after winning the archdiocesan basketball championship with a 73-69 victory over Archbishop Stepinac. The game was played at Mount St. Michael in the Bronx Feb. 25. Elijah Buchanan scored 24 points for the Mountaineers (19-8), who also received 20 points from Jacob Rodriguez and 13 points and 13 rebounds from Joe Bull. For Stepinac (17-10), junior Alan Griffin had 39 points and 14 rebounds, and freshman RJ Davis added 13 points, six assists and four rebounds. “Tremendous win for our program, school and alumni,” Mount St. Michael coach Tom Fraher

told CNY. “The senior trio of Buchanan, Bull and Rodriguez led the team to the title. We are very proud of these kids.” Mount St. Michael and Stepinac now will represent the archdiocese in the CHSAA AA Division Intersectional quarterfinals on Sunday, March 5, at Fordham University.

The CHSAA A Division and B Division Intersectional championship games are Friday, March 3, at Fordham. No. 1 La Salle and No. 2 Sacred Heart are meeting for the B Division title at 6 p.m. The A Division finalists were still being determined at press time.

CLASS OF 2017 GRADUATION On Saturday, June 3 the 90th annual commencement exercises were held in the Richard J. Tricario Sports Center Gymnasium in which 157 members of the Class of 2017 received diplomas. For the fourth consecutive year Mount Saint Michael Academy was pleased to graduate 100% of its senior class! This compares to 72% of their public school counterparts in New York City and 65% in the Bronx. Students were accepted to a number of top colleges and universities, joined the military, and began other pursuits.

FORMER PRESIDENT REMEMBERED BY NEW HONORS PROGRAM The Brother John Bantz Honors Program, is a highly competitive, integrated program of study that provides a well-rounded education to select students at Mount St. Michael Academy. The program provides an experience that challenges and stimulates students through rigorous courses, unique cultural and academic field experiences, and original research opportunities. 1 HOLLYWOOD IN THE BRONX

The Mount has served as a backdrop to a number of recent film and television shoots. With a sprawling 22-acre campus and terrific academic and sporting facilities, it serves as an ideal location for local productions. Included over the last year were scenes for the new Netflix drama Seven Seconds, shots for the CBS hit Madam Secretary, and multiple other independent and popular films and series. The school reviews and approves a variety of location shoots, film productions and photo shoots on campus for commercial and non-commercial purposes.

2 THE BLUE AND GOLD GOES GREEN

A rooftop solar panel electric system was installed during the summer of 2017 atop the Richard J. Tricario Sports Complex building. The Mount is very proud to be the first Catholic school in the New York Archdiocese and one of only three schools in New York City to have installed a solar-electric system to power its campus using a sustainable source. This eco-friendly system will help reduce operating costs and it provides a tangible learning platform for our students who will not only learn first-hand about the benefits of advanced applied science, but understand how we model the behavior of a responsible community. The installation serves as a learning element for the school’s environmental activist club, EnviroMount which aspires to make The Mount a green movement leader in the north Bronx. An indoor, public monitoring system is on display for students and visitors to track solar energy statistics daily. By undertaking this effort, Mount St. Michael will certainly be an example for other schools, businesses and the local community.

3 IMPROVING OUR CAMPUS | FACILITY UPGRADES & TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES

Investments in excess of more than $6.5 million have been made to the physical plant of Mount Saint Michael’s expansive 90-plus-year-old campus in recent years. These projects were sorely needed and included major plumbing repairs, boiler maintenance and replacement, and other less-visible improvements. The impression of the campus on prospective students and their families greatly impacts enrollment and improvements allow us to maintain our competitive edge and effectively recruit future Mountaineers. In addition, a comprehensive project to convert academic spaces to meet technology needs is currently underway. This endeavor sets out to make each classroom interactive with state-of-the-art touch boards. With the distribution of notebook computers to each student in the 2017-18 academic year, teachers are able to effectively utilize robust platforms to educate in new and innovative ways. At a cost of about $35,000 per classroom, only two have been converted with additional renovations due to take place during the school year. New sources of funding would allow for all 39 remaining classrooms to be completed. The Brother Albert Gustave, FMS Library is due to receive a much-needed facelift and new projects are on the horizon that will allow for updates to expand services related to

online learning opportunities, FOCUS program initiatives, and instructional and academic support.

4 VIRTUAL CLASSROOM

Technology in the classroom has already made its impact. Starting in 2017 academic year, The Mount introduced a beta program for online/virtual learning in which ten students are taking college-level courses (for credit!) in subjects not readily available in a traditional high school setting. These include Investing in the Stock Market, Business and Personal Law, Introduction to Computer Science, Biochemistry, Journalism in a Digital Age, languages like Cantonese and Russian, and more. It’s already proven to be a success with heightened student achievement and grades soaring in the 90s. We are confident that no other school in our market is offering its best and brightest this type of experience and hope to attract additional bright young scholars to The Mount by making this opportunity more widely available.

Do a double take: that’s right, the campus was converted to Westmore Prep for recent filming of Madam Secretary

A total of 324 solar panels were installed on the roof of The Mount’s gymnasium, the largest of any high school in New York City.

Proud mother Cynthia Turnquest-Jones, P ’19 thanks the attendees for assisting in the mission and making a Mount education possible for her son and all our Mount sons.

Not even rain could dampen spirits at the 27th Annual Golf & Tennis Invitational which was held over the course of two days due to weather with the spring dinner held on Monday, May 22 and the golf and tennis tournaments on Thursday, September 28 at Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, NY. Through the course of the two events, the outing boasted a record $190,000 in funds raised to benefit the students of Mount St. Michael Academy. This year’s dinner honored Rich Tinger ’63 who has been a long-time supporter of the outing and active alumnus. For nearly 30 years, this event has provided a fun-filled day of golf and camaraderie that provides unrestricted support for our students and scholarship programs. In addition to raffle prizes that featured trips to Super Bowl LII in Minnesota and a VIP Experience to see Hamilton on Broadway, the event also included a tremendous lineup of silent and live auction items such as golf foursomes, one-of-a-kind experiences, exciting trips, tickets to sporting events, golf and athletic products, and other fine offerings. As one of the largest and most successful outings, we appreciate all of those who were able to attend both portions of the event and participate in such a meaningful way. On behalf of the young men of The Mount, we extend our thanks and gratitude for your support. For more information about the events, visit www.mtstmichael.org/golf.

Enroll in the Sponsor a Mount Student (S.A.M.S.) program The Mount Saint Michael Academy tradition is distinct in its motto ad astra per aspera, or “to the stars through difficulties.” Our motto lets students know that their high school experience may not be easy, but it will be satisfying and rewarding. Since 1926, The Mount has prepared over 20,000 young men for college and beyond. Our high educational standards and fine extracurricular programs are among the best in New York City. Each year The Mount relies upon the generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends to support our students and facilitate its continued excellence. With the average family of a Mount student earning an approximate $35,100, our relatively affordable tuition of $8,300 remains out of reach for many. No doubt, alumni can relate to the struggles these families face as their own families had difficulty making ends meet even when the costs for a private Catholic education were much lower. As a response to this, the school’s leadership launched the Sponsor A Mount Student (S.A.M.S.) program some years ago under its beloved former president, Br. John Bantz, FMS. In so doing, they designed a format for donors to contribute toward the educational expenses of a deserving young man throughout his high school career. By participating in the program, a relationship is cultivated between the student and his donor and students are in contact to thank and update their sponsors several times throughout the course of the year. Options currently exist for quarter, half and full tuition sponsorship. With more than 60 alumni and friends currently taking part in the S.A.M.S. program and approximately 100 students benefiting from their support, there still remains a great need! For more information on how you can be a part of this essential program and change the life of a deserving student, visit www.mtstmichael.org/SAMS.

Making a bequest or planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for Mount Saint Michael Academy and its mission while accommodating your own personal, financial, estate-planning, and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may actually increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs. Just as importantly, you will know that you have made a meaningful contribution to The Mount. The most practical way to make significant gifts may be through your estate plan, by means of a will, living trust or beneficiary designation on a life insurance policy or retirement account. Such gifts are wholly revocable while you are alive and may save significant taxes for your estate. Once you have indicated that you have made a bequest or planned gift, or otherwise made provisions in your estate plans for The Mount, you will become members of the Archangel Michael Society. As a member of the Society, your name will be published in recognition of your commitment and thereby encourage others to follow your example. For more information on Planned Giving, visit our dedicated section online at www.mtstmichael.org. For all other questions, please contact Thomas McCarthy, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at (718) 515-6400 x267 or via e-mail at [email protected].

BRO. ROBERT EUGENE LECLERC, F.M.S. Brother Robert LeClerc, F.M.S., 84, a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools for 67 years, died on August 26, 2017 at De La Salle Hall in Lincroft, NJ. Inducted as a Legend of The Mount in 2012, Bro. Robert was a mathematics teacher, maintenance director and teachers aid at Mount Saint Michael Academy for over 26 years. During his tenure, he touched and positively influenced thousands of our alumni. Bro. Robert was born in Burlington, VT. He entered the Marist Brothers Postulancy in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1949 and entered the Marist Brothers Novitiate in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1950. He professed first vows in 1951 and final vows in 1956. After completing his religious and academic studies at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY, he earned a masters degree in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry from Saint John’s University in New York in 1960. His career included nearly 60 years of teaching at Central Catholic HS in Lawrence, MA, Mount St. Michael Academy in Bronx, NY, Cardinal

Hayes HS, Bronx, NY, Marist High School in Eugene, OR, and Our Lady of Lourdes HS in Poughkeepsie, NY. Bro. Robert was a devout Marist religious and a leader in the field of mathematics education. He retired to the Marist Brothers community at Champagnat Hall in the Bronx, NY in 2007 and lived his last two years at De LaSalle Hall in Lincroft, NJ. Mount Saint Michael’s President and CEO, Peter Corritori ’71 recalled, ”I had Bro. Robert for freshman algebra and, along with some of my classmates, worked for him in the summer of 1970 as part of The Mount’s maintenance crew. Our job was to scrape and paint all of the wood planks on the bleachers. I remember him fondly as an excellent teacher and as a work supervisor who worked shoulder to shoulder with us on hot summer days.” A wake and funeral mass were held at The Mount on August 30, 2017 followed by internment at the Marist Cemetery in Esopus, NY. May he rest heavenly in peace.

DOMINICK BESS MEMORIAL FUND ESTABLISHED The Mount St. Michael Academy Community was deeply saddened to lose one of its incoming freshman, Dominick Bess, who passed away following football practice on Tuesday morning, August 22, 2017. A promising student-athlete, Dominick was the recipient of a Champagnat scholarship and was due to begin his freshman year that September. At only 14 years old, his life was cut tragically short and his career at The Mount had yet to begin.

Due to the outpouring of support from alumni and friends for Dominick and his family, Mount St. Michael established a memorial fund in his name. To honor his memory, a scholarship will be awarded to an incoming student for the fall 2018 class to make attending The Mount possible for a deserving young man.
