ANNUAL REPORT2014-2015 Season
76
The renaissance that began at Miami City Ballet two years ago with new artistic leadership continues to excite our audiences, inspire our dancers, and expand our presence in the community and on the global stage. The 2014-2015 season was remarkable in many respects - the world premiere of Justin Peck’s Heatscape, a commissioned work by one of the most sought-after choreographers of our day, garnered national press attention and positioned Miami City Ballet at the center of the national conversation about ballet today. Miami City Ballet’s Canadian tour included a debut in Vancouver and a return to Ottawa for the first time in more than 12 years. Audiences embraced the exuberance and warmth of our dancers as did critics, and return engagements are already being discussed! Company premieres of Richard Alston’s Carmen and Jerome Robbins’ The Concert were complemented by masterworks by George Balanchine, John Cranko, Paul Taylor, and Twyla Tharp, all danced with Miami City Ballet’s distinct personality and élan. In addition to last season’s incredible touring roster, MCB appeared at the Guggenheim Museum in New York to sold-out audiences in a preview performance highlighting Heatscape, with street artist Shepard Fairey and choreographer Justin Peck.
Miami City Ballet School has seen enrollment reach record numbers with more than 1,500 students and adults - and growing! Students are traveling from around the world to study here with many aspiring to secure a highly coveted position in the professional company. We have several education and outreach programs in the community designed to make dance accessible to every young child with talent and need, and this past season alone we touched the lives of more than 10,000 children and adults. Our signature, free performance series, Ballet for Young People, fosters partnerships with schools and community groups and brings dance to thousands of underserved audiences through Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. Ballet Bus, a new partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Superintendent Alberto Carvalho represents a transformative initiative to provide long-term scholarship and support opportunities to young people in our community - providing premier dance training, dancewear and footwear, transportation, and counseling to children from Title 1 schools, all free of charge, for up to 10 years per child.
Message from leadership
Lourdes LopezArtistic Director
The Company’s strong fiscal performance in 2014-15, which included an unprecedented operating surplus of nearly $1.8 million is attributed to the significant investments in MCB by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Ford Foundation, and our Board of Trustees. While there is more we can do to strengthen MCB’s balance sheet, our improved financial position demonstrates the community’s confidence in our direction, illustrating a remarkable philanthropic investment in Miami City Ballet’s vision and mission.
As Miami City Ballet turns 30, the future is bright. We possess a Company of enormous talent and diversity, with an artistic vision that is forward-looking, inclusive, and innovative. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our volunteer leadership, our Board and philanthropic supporters, our audiences and our community partners who choose to make Miami City Ballet a part of their lives.
We look forward to sharing with you the thrilling excitement of this very special anniversary season which lies ahead!

creating a dynamic platform for unique collaboration and daring invention - and leaving a lasting impact. The extraordinary partnership between choreographer Justin Peck and visual artist Shepard Fairey could only happen at Miami City Ballet, where the street art of Wynwood Walls collides with the classical perfection of Balanchine heritage and the athletic vitality of MCB’s dancers. This is art for the next generation.

as we ushered in a new chapter in the history of MCB’s work both on and off the stage. In one evening, the philanthropic support for the Company’s mission to provide the very best dance and dance education generated a tremendous sense of community, and great Miami pride. What better way to celebrate the most magical time of the year than with your friends and family, together enjoying one of the most treasured holiday classics of all time! This past season’s inaugural Nutcracker Magic kids gala provided an opportunity for children and families to experience the thrill of The Nutcracker in a very special and memorable way - including meeting the Sugar Plum Fairy. Introducing our children to the magic of the live performing arts is so vital - they are the future philanthropists, audience members, and dancers who will keep this art form alive. With all proceeds benefitting Miami City Ballet’s education and outreach initiatives, Nutcracker Magic is a holiday tradition that is now part of our family’s celebration, and we hope it will be part of many families’ magical memories for years to come.

Presenting a groundbreaking new collaborative work at the Solomon S. Guggenheim Museum in New York was just another example of how Miami City Ballet is moving the art form forward. They are helping to build a community where outstanding art and dance are embedded into the fabric of our cultural identity.
