Activities Carried Out During The Year
Science For Kids
We´ll invite children from elementary and secondary school to visit our
campus (CIACyT, UASLP). We have different workshops for the kids, where they
learn basic principles of optics, photonics and math.
The names of the workshops are: "microscopic world, playing with light, the
essential is invisible to eyes, 3D image and colors light". At the end of the event, all
the kids were happy for the things that they learned, and for the diploma that they
received. You can find all the photos and videos in our Facebook Page “SPIE
Student Chapter UASLP” https://www.facebook.com/SPIEstudentchapterSLP/
Our advisor help us to give to each child a kit with a t-shirt and a bag with a
notebook, a pen, a pencil and a bottle of water.
Microscopic World:
Observation of different objects and living beings with a Scanning Electron Microscope
Playing With Light:
Analysis of optical phenomena caused by the interaction of the light with different
materials
The Essential Is Invisible To Eyes:
The infrared radiation and the way of detected it are explained here, one activity of this
workshop is take a photo of each attendant that can have it printed at the end of this
3D Image and Colors Light
The attendants learn about the generation of 3D images and light diffraction, they used
stereoscopic lenses for watch 3D images in the different screens as well as the diffraction
lenses for look the diffraction patterns with different light colors
Conclusion and Diplomas
The kids commented about the different workshops and their favorite part of each
Lunch With Experts
We participate organizing the event that is part of the “2nd Mexican Meeting of
Terahertz Science and Technology” where in the final event, in base with the
experience of the Optics + Photonics 2016 we decided to organized a “Lunch with
the Experts” where the attendees to the meeting had the chance to be a little more
close with the professors in an informal environment talking about their topics and
have fun.
In the “2nd Mexican Meeting of Terahertz Science and Technology” we had
the honor to have the visit of the 2017 SPIE President Glenn Boreman that give us
a conference, unfortunately, for a schedule of his flight, he can’t join us in the
“Lunch with Experts”
Coffee Science
The main idea of this activity it’s invite research that can talk with students
and the public in general, to share their experiences in science, study and personal
life while everybody drinks a cup of coffee.
It’s an outdoor activity for students that is recorded and the video is uploaded
to YouTube where, in collaboration with the OSA’s Chapter, we’ve a play list of the
events that we do in the UASLP and is part of a project of Mexican SPIE chapters.
Our first event had to PhD Alex Cuadrado from the Universidad Complutense
de Madrid with approximately 50 attendees, and it’s possible to find the
conversation in the next link.

In addition of this, we worked with the Mexican Society of Metallurgy for the
realization of another Coffee Science with the PhD Juan Pablo Lozoya Rodríguez
with approximately 30 attendees, the link of the video is

Workshops
Some members of the chapter organized different workshops to enrich the
knowledge of other students, using some equipment that they use for work every
day, this workshops were of different topics like: Scanning electron microscopy,
numerical simulation using Comsol Multiphysics, and electron beam lithography.
The number of attendees varied in function of the capacity of the equipment,
but the quantity of the total persons was 60 approximately, all the workshops were
no cost.
Scanning Electron Microscopy
With the collaboration of the PhD Manuel Gutiérrez, we organized a workshop for
use the SEM,for a better understanding, there was a maximum of 3 attendees
each day and with a duration of 4 hours
Numerical Simulation Using COMSOL Multiphysics
Three experts in COMSOL gave a workshop of how this software works, and we
analyzed some simulations that did each student.
Electron Beam Lithography
Two members that had a lot of experience on Lithography give a workshop for
know how it works and all the steps that you’ve to do for use this technique.
Recruitment And Social Meetings
The student chapter will have a designated space to display our activities.
We display the projects that have been developed, which are in development as
well as future projects.
Also we´ll give some conversations on the school activities, social activities
and leisure activities that we perform as chapter. In addition, we´ll hand out flyers
and advertising our chapter.
In addition of this, we made some meetings where we try to have a space to
be create a good relationship between the members and be clear that we can have
great moments in company of all of us.
Some people can think that this moments are not so much important for the
work of the Chapter, but for us it’s the best way to remember that if we stay
together we can do amazing things like a team and that each member of the
Chapter has an important job to do for us, not only because of the work he does
day by day, but because of the importance for a team to stay together and work for
a better society, part of this are things that we learned in the workshop last year in
the Optics+Photonics.
Social Meetings
Assistance to Optics + Photonics 2016
We had the opportunity to assist to the Optics+Photonics 2016 in San Diego,
California, USA, where we could go to the leadership workshop that was so much
helpful to know about different topics that we put in action even though the
activities of the Chapter, and in daily work.
Additionally we could show our first activities in the poster session and
establish networks with other students of other part of the world to maybe one day
work in similar areas, also learn about the things that other research are doing, and
tips for the research that we learn for the special conferences for students and to
the outreach games that give us good ideas of how we can show the physical
phenomes to diverse public, in specific to the kids.
Planned Activities For The Future
There are some activities that we’re trying to do in the next months, each of
this are explained in the next lines.
Science For Kids
We´ll invite children from elementary and secondary school to visit our
campus (CIACyT, UASLP). We have different workshops for the kids, the names of
the workshops are: "microscopic world, playing with light, the essential is invisible
to eyes, 3D image and colors light". In this activity the children learn basic
principles of optics, photonics and math.
We are in keeping in touch with one children’s hostel for have an event for the
kinds that are there, and also we are trying to design experiments that can be
mobile, because we’re analyzing if is feasible to do one of this events in a
community that is in the periphery of the city and it’s not easy for them to have
access for a lot of services that for a lot of people are common and the education
and science it’s a privilege.
Participate in Outreach Games
Three of our members are trying to design a good game for participate in
outreach games in the Optics+Photonics, but first they have to demonstrate their
project in the Science for Kids, so we are trying to select what could be the best
and trying to have this in the event of this or the next year.
Coffee Science
This kind of events had been well accepted for the students of different
grades so we have the intention to continue this events in the next year with
approximately one event each two months.
Meeting With Other SPIE Student Chapter
We have the intention to establish a relation with another Chapters that are
close of the city so we will start to analyze different events that can be interesting
for everybody and where we can collaborate in the next months.
In addition of that we plan to do a Pizza Party with the guys of our chapter to
continue with the social meetings that can be so much helpful for a good
performance of the activities of this Student Chapter.
