Japan Society Board of Directors
is the leading U.S. organization committed to
deepening mutual understanding between the
United States and Japan in a global context.
Now in its second century, the Society serves
audiences across the United States and abroad
through innovative programs in arts and culture,
public policy, business, language and education.
Dear Friends and Supporters,
As our extraordinary 110th Anniversary came to a close, we held a celebratory
ceremony and reception at the Hotel Okura in Tokyo to further deepen awareness
and strengthen our relationships in Japan. We were most honored to have the
presence of Their Imperial Highnesses the Crown Prince and Princess as well as
Foreign Minister Taro Kono, who delivered the toast.
We welcomed 630 guests to our 2018 Annual Dinner, featuring an inspiring
keynote dialogue between Mastercard President & CEO Ajay Banga and S&P
Global President & CEO Doug Peterson. Jazz pianist Makoto Ozone gave a
showstopping performance, followed by the Japan Society Award presentation
to Sir Deryck Maughan.
Premiere performances included Moto Osada's chamber opera Four Nights of
Dream, choreographer Luca Vegetti's Left-Right-Left and Hiroshi Sugimoto's
new noh play Rikyu-Enoura. Commissioned in partnership and co-presented by
esteemed Japanese arts institutions Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Yokohama Noh Theater
and Odawara Art Foundation respectively, performances sold out both at Japan
Society and in Japan. Spring 2018 Performing Arts programs emphasized Japan
Society's vital role in New York City's creative community by involving local
artists, and the season ended on a high note with a sold-out concert by jazz
pianist Makoto Ozone.
The fall exhibition, Hiroshi Sugimoto: Gates of Paradise, explored one of the first
encounters between Japan and the West in the 16th century through a new series
of photographs by Sugimoto, paired with masterpieces of nanban art from Japan.
Our lobby garden, redesigned by Sugimoto, was featured in Architectural Digest.
Called "Entrancing" by The New York Times, A Giant Leap: The Transformation of
Hasegawa Tohaku, (spring 2018) was the first exhibition in the U.S. devoted to
one of the most important painters of Japan's early modern era. Precious screens
and hanging scrolls, including four Important Cultural Properties from Japan,
were displayed in two rotations that garnered significant press.
Our 12th annual JAPAN CUTS Film Festival spanned 10 days and showcased
28 feature-length films and nine short films, with the most guest filmmakers,
actors, and producers in the festival's history. The late actress Kirin Kiki was
honored with this year's CUT ABOVE Award for Outstanding Performance in
Film. Co-organized with The Museum of Modern Art, Kazuo Miyagawa: Japan's
Greatest Cinematographer paid tribute to the legendary cameraman with an 11-
film retrospective in recognition of the 110th anniversary of his birth.
The Business & Policy program presented discussions with prominent economic
and business leaders, while also examining the Trump administration's Asia policy
across multiple events. Notable speakers included Koichi Hamada, Economic
Adviser to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Suntory Holdings Ltd. CEO Takeshi Niinami
and economist Nouriel Roubini. Discussions on artificial intelligence, blockchain
technology and cryptocurrencies in the financial sector brought new perspectives
to enthusiastic audiences. In a new initiative, eight programs throughout the
season were livecast globally, expanding the Society's reach to fresh audiences.
Guests discovered the many flavors of Japan at our popular talks and tastings,
including "Natto: Japan's Probiotic Superfood," covered by The Wall Street
Journal and programs with samurai banquet cuisine expert Kanna Himiya and
shochu sommelier Stephen Lyman. Commemorating the 7th anniversary of the
Great East Japan Earthquake, Richard Lloyd Parry appeared in conversation with
Ian Buruma to discuss Ghosts of the Tsunami: Death and Life in Japan's Disaster
Zone. Buddhist priest Dai Ajari Ryojun Shionuma, one of the only people alive
to have completed two of the most dif ficult ascetic practices in the Shugendo
tradition, shared wisdom from his journey to awakening.
The Japan Society Junior Fellows Leadership Program brought 10 Japanese high
school students to the U.S. in the spring, with 10 American counterparts traveling
to Japan this past July. We offered "Medieval Japan: People & Systems in the
World of the Shogunate," a professional development program fully accredited
by the NYC Department of Education. Our sold-out New Year's celebration,
Oshogatsu, part of the Japan's Annual Festivities series for families, was featured
as a Top 5 NYC attraction of the week on NY1.
The Language Center's Japanese classes had a record breaking number of
registrants each semester. The Nihongo Chat + J-Culture series introduced
Japanese cultural activities ikebana, tate, kyudo and kendo, demonstrated by
professional artists, and a new Japanese business etiquette workshop was in high
demand. In May, we invited a group of high school students from Brownsville,
Brooklyn for free lessons on Japanese and culture to help them achieve their goal
to go to Japan in July.
The launch of the two-year Innovators Network project Resilient and Vibrant
Rural Communities in Japan and the U.S. took five leading Japanese rural
revitalizers to meet and exchange ideas with their American counterparts in West
Virginia, Ohio, Nebraska and New York. The visit received in-depth coverage from
West Virginia's The Herald-Dispatch and Nebraska's Omaha World Herald and
The Lyons Mirror-Sun, among others. Produced in partnership with the Japan NPO
Center in Tokyo, the project's American innovators visit Niigata, Iwate, Shimane
and Tokyo in October 2018.
Looking to the future, a comprehensive strategic planning review of the Society
culminating this fall will illuminate our organizational roadmap for the next
three to five years. As always, we thank you for your continued support and look
forward to seeing you in the 2018-19 season and beyond.

"The program allowed me to build incredible connections, complete a successful research project that has given me insight
into many issues, and challenge myself to understand what a leader is and how I can become one. I grew a lot intellectually and
have a new perspective on how our world can become a better place through empathetic leadership and education. I feel that the program succeeded in its goals of educating young people
on leadership's importance in our world, and strengthening the future relationship between the U.S. and Japan."

"When we paid a visit to [Cosmic Studio], local residents came by and started to explain the studio and discuss cinematography. It
was something that they did naturally and everyone was having a good time. As I watched this, it occurred to me that this is what makes a good town: No matter how small a community is and no
matter how rural, if the residents are enjoying their lives, and if the town can create this kind of atmosphere, it's a good town."

In Tohoku, revitalization efforts continue seven years after the devastating Great East Japan
Earthquake. Many of the Relief Fund grantees continue their good work, and although most of
the relief fund grants are completed, Japan Society continues to engage with a number of the
former grantees who are hard at work revitalizing local economies and the agricultural sector.
April marked the second anniversary of the Kumamoto Earthquake, and the Relief Fund made
a follow up grant to FUMIDAS, which works with small- to medium-sized businesses and
organizations adversely impacted by the earthquake. The relief fund investment in FUMIDAS
not only helps businesses and organizations with immediate needs, but impacts their long-
term growth and viability, and nurtures the next generation of local leaders revitalizing
Kumamoto. Katariba continued its work with junior high and high school students, providing
much needed emotional and educational support and encouraging them to think about their
potential and desires for the future.
