Japan Society Board of Directors
is the leading U.S. organization committed to
deepening mutual understanding between the
United States and Japan in a global context.
Now in its second century, the Society serves
audiences across the United States and abroad
through innovative programs in arts and culture,
public policy, business, language and education.
Dear Friends and Supporters,
We continually strive to increase the visibility of Japan Society not only in
the United States, but also in Japan, deepening the impact of our institutional
mission. To commemorate the fif th anniversary of the Great East Japan
Earthquake, we co-organized two conferences in Tokyo that focused on disaster
recovery and a vision for the future of Tohoku. We also expanded earthquake
relief efforts to Kumamoto.
Our 2016 Annual Dinner attracted 620 guests and raised over $1.33 million.
Highlights included Japan Society Chairman Wilbur Ross’ f ireside chat with Bank
of America Chairman & CEO Brian Moynihan and actor George Takei’s heartfelt
acceptance of the Japan Society Award.
The 2015-16 Performing Arts season welcomed a robust lineup of distinguished
artists, including Living National Treasure Mansaku Nomura in a traditional
kyogen program with his son, Mansai. For the North American tour of Toshiki
Okada’s God Bless Baseball, a consortium of co-presenters was organized that
included five leading U.S. performing arts presenters from across the country.
The Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation awarded Japan
Society Gallery a $2 million grant, followed by an additional gift of $2.5 million in
fall 2016. Both grants will be used to establish the Mary Griggs Burke Endowment
Fund for exhibition development as well as public and educational programming
for audiences of all ages. In fall 2015, Japan Society Gallery showcased For a New
World to Come: Experiments in Japanese Art and Photography, 1968-1979, which
Ken Johnson of The New York Times called “ fascinating and illuminating.” The
spring exhibition, In the Wake: Japanese Photographers Respond to 3/11, opened
on the fif th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Film programming significantly increased this past year with 66 screenings
and events. The 10th anniversary of the JAPAN CUTS film festival had an
unprecedented lineup of guest filmmakers and stars —Lily Franky and Atsuko
Maeda, among others—with 29 feature films and dozens of shorts, almost all
screening in NYC for the first time.
The Business & Policy Program hosted 27 corporate lectures and events,
welcoming high-level officials from Bank of Japan, including Governor Haruhiko
Kuroda and Deputy Governor Hiroshi Nakaso, who talked about Japan’s economy
under quantitative and qualitative monetary easing. Women on the Rise, a new
series, focused on the advancement of women in the public and private sectors.
The Talks+ Program held 19 diverse lectures and hands-on workshops, receiving
mentions in major media including C-SPAN, The New York Times, InStyle
Magazine, The New Yorker and Architectural Digest. Among the notable guests
were actor George Takei, kabuki star Ebizo Ichikawa XI and architect Sou
Fujimoto. One of the most exciting accomplishments was the Okinawa series,
co-organized with Okinawa Prefectural Government.
In the 20th anniversary year of the Education & Family Program, 10 U.S. students
were selected to travel to Japan, and 10 Japanese students traveled to New York,
to participate in the Japan Society Junior Fellows Leadership Program. They
met with leading professionals, including former Senator John “Jay” Rockefeller
IV, stayed with a host family, visited historical sites and completed a research
project. Ten U.S. educators traveled on the three-week Educators’ Study Tour to
Japan, among other enriching programming for educators and students.
The Toyota Language Center reached record Japanese class enrollment for
three consecutive semesters this year, surpassing 500 students each at about
a 17 percent increase from two years prior. New courses included popular
JLPT preparation classes, as well as J-drama and manga courses. Our monthly
conversation events (Nihongo Chat) began to incorporate cultural components,
featuring a guest demonstration of emoji art in October and, through a grant from
The Japan Foundation, a series of J-Culture events beginning with kimono-no-
kitsuke in May.
Innovators Network completed its three-year U.S.-Japan Leaders Exchange with
participants from Tohoku, New Orleans, LA, Wilmington, OH, Detroit, MI and New
York, NY. This collaboration resulted in four new data projects by participants in
Sendai and Onagawa in Miyagi Prefecture, and in Iitate and Namie in Fukushima
Prefecture, and a new program started by a participant from Soma, Fukushima to
engage high school social entrepreneurs.
Our programs and events continue to expand in scope, attendance and media
acclaim. As always, I thank you for your ongoing support and hope to see you at
future Japan Society events.

I have matured as a person and have wrestled with the ideas of independence and responsibility. My understanding of Japan
has deepened and so has my love for the country... I will never see the world in the same way.”

work on the ground to reflect on their past achievements and to develop a vision for the future
as they move forward.
