PREAMBLE

Great Southern Grammar was opened in 1999 as a Christian coeducational residential and day school for

students of the Great Southern region. The School’s mission is to provide young people of the Great Southern

Region and beyond a world class school incorporating a liberal education, the Christian faith and a maritime

heritage. A broad and balanced education is provided through inspiring academic and cocurricular

programmes delivered by an outstanding staff. Children are supported in their learning by specialists in

learning support and gifted education. The Middle School offers a unique transition programme with many

of the best features of primary schooling combined with secondary elements. The School is proud of the

achievements of its graduates with excellent results evident in both ATAR courses and VET programmes. It

also boasts a comprehensive sports programme and is considered to be the leading provider of music

education in the Great Southern. Boarding students and families are supported by a committed, well qualified

and caring staff in houses that have the feel of a large family home. Great Southern Grammar is located on

Oyster Harbour between the King and Kalgan Rivers and provides an ideal environment for learning and

living.

The equal highest Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score yet achieved by any GSG student sitting

WACE examinations, 99.9, was awarded to 2013 GSG Dux, Campbell Harter.

Three GSG students, Emily Wishart, Sarah Herford, and Katie McAllister all achieved ATAR scores of more

than 98, placing them in the top two per cent of students nationally.

Class of 2013 graduates, Jasper Brooksbank, Grace Huffer, Thomas McKenney, Thomas Moroney, Gabrielle

Ruttico and Julia Reynolds ranked among the top five per cent of students nationally for their ATAR scores,

and are recognised for their commitment to excellence.

Graduates Dan Burke and Haydn Evans have both been offered places at the WA Academy of Performing Arts

(WAAPA), bringing to life their dreams of becoming top performers.

We congratulate these and all Class of 2013 graduates who achieved excellence in their exam results. As a

cohort, Class of 2013 students achieved great results, with 20 achieving an ATAR score of more than 90,

making this the most successful cohort of students to graduate from the school.

Graduate and former Head Girl, Katie McAllister, travelled to attend The Hague International Model United

Nations (THIMUN), held in The Hague, the Netherlands.

FAST FACTS

In 2013, 71 GSG students with a median ATAR score of 90 applied for places at universities, the best result in the School's history.

Twenty eight per cent of GSG students placed in the top 10 per cent of students nationally More than half of the students applying for university places achieved in the top 20 per cent of

students nationally. GSG VET students participating in Music, Hospitality and Business achieved Certificate II in their areas

of study, enabling them to readily obtain full time work.

Enrichment Programs

LEARNING SUPPORT

As this is an inclusive school, the aim of Learning Support at Great Southern Grammar is to provide for the

diverse needs of our students in an educational environment where there is respect, tolerance and

encouragement.

Our Learning Support Team works with all sub-schools to identify students with learning difficulties and

special needs and provide teaching programmes that address those needs. In consultation with the Learning

Support Coordinator, teachers provide modified learning programmes, designed to meet the special needs of

individual students.

Our Learning Support team:

• Provides a basic level of direct support for children with special learning needs;

• Provides literacy and numeracy support programmes;

• Assesses students who may be at risk in literacy and numeracy;

• Writes Individual Education Plans for students with special needs;

• Provides resources and teaching strategy support for classroom teachers with students with special

needs;

• Provides (or organises) professional assessment of current and prospective students with special

needs;

• Case manages students with special needs including regular parent conferences with relevant

teaching staff and external agencies such as school psychologist, occupational therapist etc;

• Assists in whole school literacy planning, focusing on students at risk;

• Provides pastoral care support for students with special needs and students at educational risk and

assists with the implementation of behaviour management plans where necessary; and

• Implements best teaching and learning practices that reflect an inclusive model of education across

the Learning Areas.

GIFTED & TALENTED

Gifted learners have particular cognitive, affective, social, and aesthetic needs.

The Gifted Education Coordinator assesses these needs using data from multiple sources including student

test results and a nomination process. Based on the data, provisions are put in place to provide a

developmentally appropriate programme by the Gifted Education Coordinator and class teacher working

collaboratively.

Provisions for gifted students include a variety of individual and group interventions specifically targeted at

developing talent. Such provisions are divided into three areas: enrichment, acceleration and grouping. For

example, one student may be provided with work at his or her own appropriate level in class, whilst another

may benefit from working with students from a higher year group.

A range of withdrawal and inclusive programmes are provided to support the class programmes and give

students opportunities to work independently on research tasks and develop high-order thinking skills.

Students are also encouraged to participate in a variety of external competitions and exams in all curriculum

subjects.

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement is encouraged and welcomed at Great Southern Grammar. Parents are active in the

Parents’ and Friends’ Association, and as volunteers in the classroom and Sporting Support Groups. Great

Southern Grammar has parents who assist in supporting the following teams through involvement in coaching

and managing:

Parents volunteer to assist in the canteen, supporting classroom activities and events, coaching sports teams

across the School and in the Uniform Shop. We have initiated Support Groups for Basketball, Netball and

Soccer.

Students enjoy a range of special interest and fun activities before and after school. A number of subjects and

optional activities are offered on a co-curricular basis to cater for the varied interests of our students.

Great Southern Grammar welcomes input from students in the choice of additional activities.

Satisfaction

The School receives many positive comments regarding the education and holistic approach the School

provides. These compliments come from correspondence and verbally from parents and local community

members to the Headmaster and school staff. The School displays a positive attitude and strong community

engagement which is evident in the student’s school spirit, community involvement and leadership.

Enrolment statistics are strong, with waiting lists for each entry point, being Kindergarten, Year 7, Year 8 and

Year 10 and especially Boarding in Years 7 and 8. Each year the School undertakes a survey of parents and

staff through the MYP Corporation group. Results are reviewed by the School Executive and staff with a focus

on continuous improvement.
