Annual Report/ 2017-2018

Cancer care management in the country is posing a monumental challenge as the number of cancer patients in the country is rising phenomenally while the infrastructure for prevention, diagnosis and treatment is not adequate. The scenario requires confluence of greater efforts of the government and the NGOs to fight dreadful disease of cancer which is synonymous with an avalanche of severe physical, mental and economic miseries specially, for the disadvantaged section.

This year Global Cancer Concern India has completed two decades of its operation. It is an immense pleasure to see that the seed sown by the founder of the organisation Maj Gen R S Pannu who was an embodiment of excellent soldiery and humanitarian service, has grown into a tree. Starhawk, a respected voice in modern spirituality has rightly remarked, “Creation is the ultimate resistance, the ultimate refusal to accept things as they are”. It was Gen Pannu's sensitivity to the sufferings of the people due to abysmally poor cancer care system which lead to the genesis of Global Cancer Concern India about twenty years back. GCCI has been moving relentlessly on the trajectory of development following resolutely the objectives set by the founder.

During the year 2017-18, the organisation progressed very well in all sphere of its work. The funds in-flow increased by 18%. The quality is the hallmark of GCCI's work which enabled us to garner greater funds from corporate and individual donors. This enabled us to widen the horizon of our program work in various states benefiting a large number of people specially from the lower income group. We believe in Aristotle's words “Quality is not an act, it is a habit.”

The excellent team work is propelling the organisation on the path of progress. I admire buoyant spirit of the team members and hope that they will explore their full potential to work for the cause as William Shakespeare says, “We know what we are but not what we may be.”

Under the preventive programmes, GCCI has been carrying out two major activities – Cancer Screening and Cancer Awareness Programme. For the last 20 years, GCCI has been organizing cancer screening camps and carrying out extensive awareness programmes through the teams based at local level. Free cancer screening camps are organized in villages, slum areas, RWA Community Centres, Senior Citizen Association Centres, Schools and Corporate houses.

For Awareness Programmes, various materials like posters, leaflets, mailers, brochures etc. are developed and distributed. Annual Report/ 2017-2018

In India 70% of the cases are detected to be afflicted with cancer when they are already in III or IV stage and are going through agonizing pain. This scenario shows the need for a mechanism, which can provide relief from pain, to the large population of cancer patients. GCCI has been providing home based palliative care since 2006. A team comprising a doctor, trained nurse and counsellor visits the patients at their homes to provide pain relief, medication and counselling including training to care givers for better handling of patients. Palliative treatment; which is not curative, still gives moral support to the patient and extends life for notable period of time and restores quality of life. Mobile Palliative Care Projects of GCCI are located at Bathinda, Mohali, Ludhiana, Talwandi Sabo, Faridabad, Nagpur (Collaborative Project), Mumbai (Collaborative Project), Bangalore (Collaborative Project), Sitamarhi (Bihar).

ACCOMPLISHMENT:

4,517 people got served through Palliative Home Care.

LIMITED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMMELimited Financial help is given to the poor cancer patients to help them during their hour of need. Cancer thrusts heavy expenses on both – the patient and their family. Most of the time, families do not have their medical insurances. Education is no doubt one of the strongest weapons to vanquish cancer and development of cancer free society. The bread earner and other family members get completely exhausted – physically, mentally and financially while going through the long and painful treatment procedure. The aim of GCCI’s Limited Financial Assistance Programme is to lessen the stress of grief stricken families.

The Resource Mobilization Department strives to secure financial commitments from donors to ensure the funds needed for the implementation of its wide spectrum of cancer care programmes.

SchoolsDuring the review period, the schools contributed in a big way by raising resources for the cause by participating in GCCI’s School Education Programme.

Annual Report/ 2017-2018

Mobilising CSR funds is stupendously challenging and as its success is inextricably linked to the factors like differing CSR priorities of the business houses, government policies, profile of the organisation, slow pace of proposal approval dynamics etc. We assiduously cultivated contacts with large number of prominent companies and funding organizations. Some of the highlights are as under:

l ORACLE Inc.ORACLE Inc. renewed the project of Mobile Primary Health, Cancer-Screening and Palliative Care Unit at Bathinda, Punjab for the third year keeping in view abysmally poor availability of facilities for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the Cancer there specially for the disadvantaged. Oracle also agreed to support additionally GCCI’s Mobile Palliative Care Unit operating in Ludhiana.

l MAHINDRA AND MAHINDRA LTD. SWARAJ DIVISION

l

l NATIONAL PAYMENT CORPORATION OF INDIA (NPCI)GCCI successfully implemented Mobile Primary Health, Cancer Screening and Palliative Care Unit Project at Sitamarhi and exceeded beneficiary targets set for the first year of 3 year project despite challenging scenario.

l BHARAT PETROLEUM CORPORATION LIMITED (BPCL)Mobile Primary Health, Cancer Awareness, Cancer Screening and Palliative Care Project at Faridabad in Haryana for 3 years was approved by BPCL.

l SYNEOS HEALTH (Earlier INC Research)Child sponsorship Programme for NCR for one year was approved.

l OTHER CORPORATE LINKAGESLupin Foundation, Netlink (USA), Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, Kerala State Financial Enterprise (KSFE), KELTRON, Kerala Minerals & Metals Ltd (KMML), Mysore Sales International Ltd, Chennai Petro Chemicals Ltd, NTECL (Joint Venture of NTPC and TN Electric Corporation), United India Insurance, Western Coalfields Ltd, Coal India, IFFCO Tokio, Rubber Board, Kerala Goodyear Etc.

Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. Swaraj Division, Mohali, Punjab continued providing its CSR support for “Mobile Primary Health & Cancer Care” project at Mohali to provide the services of Primary Health Care, Cancer Awareness, Cancer Screening and Palliative Care free of cost with focus on rural areas and poor urban localities. Two more Units; one at Nabha and the other at Talwandi Sabo were approved by Mahindra and Mahindra Swaraj Division.

HELPAGE INDIAHelpAge India supported GCCI’s programme of observing National Cancer Awareness Day, Nov., 2017 by organizing cancer screening camps, specially for the disadvantaged elderly.

e would like to salute him for his immense contribution to society as the founder of Global Cancer Concern India W(GCCI) an NGO of Excellence working for the cause of

cancer. His dedication and hard work for this cause continue to inspire & encourage us to follow his footsteps and achieve more. It is not often that great men are born and one such was Maj Gen R S Pannu. His inspirational life and work – both as a distinguished officer of the Indian Army and later founder of Global Cancer Concern India was powered by his undaunted courage, generosity of spirit and compassion for others. His dynamic personality coupled with his concern for others made him a legendary figure in the field of social welfare.

Contrary to the saying that old soldiers never die, they fade away – this soldier neither died nor faded away as he will always live on through his legacy. He simply walks beside us unseen & unheard making his presence felt.

As members of the GCCI family, we pledge in our hearts that we will continue our crusade against cancer & bring solace to as many suffering people as possible.

Tribute to Maj Gen R S Pannu
