Dear Friends,

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a part of My New Red Shoes is witnessing first hand the profound impact that a simple, heartfelt gift can make in the life of a child in need. And at the core of what makes our work and impact possible are you – our friends, donors, volunteers, and program partners.

Because of you, our dedicated community of supporters, 6,506 Bay Area children living in poverty were outfitted from head to toe in brand new shoes and clothing for the start of school this year. For many of our children, it is the first time in their lives that they’ve received something new, that is all their own; the first time they’ve had the opportunity to choose their own clothes and outfits; but, most importantly, it is often the first time that they feel pride in their appearance, confident that they will fit in with their peers, and excited about the start of school. These feelings of confidence, pride, and acceptance can and do make all of the difference between a child showing up at school or not attending, participating in class or shrinking into the background, having a positive school experience or performing poorly and missing opportunities to engage and learn.

I am proud and overjoyed to work alongside each of you to give even more disadvantaged children and students the gift of confidence for school so that they may engage more with their peers and teachers, raise their hands more in class, play sports and have the doors to a new world of positive learning experiences opened to them. I firmly believe that a simple act of kindness can change the course of a lifetime and that the compound ripple effects of our gift can have generational impact for families and our community.

our missionThe mission of My New Red Shoes is to help homeless and low-income children look and feel confident as they start the school year by providing them with new clothing and shoes and rallying youth and adults around this effort through volunteer and educational opportunities for individuals, families, schools, corporations, and community groups.

about Clothing for ConfidenceMy New Red Shoes’ Clothing for Confidence Program provides homeless and low-income, school-aged children with new athletic shoes and the opportunity to shop for back to school clothing necessities. Each gift is packaged in a hand-sewn gift bag, made by a local volunteer, with an encouraging note wishing the recipient well for their first day of school.

Zoe is 5 years old and has been staying at a shelter the past 6 months. Her family had to leave behind most of their belongings, including most of Zoe’s

favorite clothes. She was feeling nervous about starting kindergarten in the same old, ragged sweater and shoes she’d been wearing for 6 months. But her face lit up when she got her brand new pink sneakers. She squealed and smiled. When asked if she liked her shoes, Zoe smiled very large and said “my new shoes are beeee-autiful thank you very very much!”

Jason ’s mom wasn’t able to afford new shoes and heard his mom crying on the phone about not being able to provide her children new clothing

and shoes. He taped ups his old shoes and told his mom that that his shoes are now brand new. A few weeks later, Jason received shoes from My New Red Shoes and he was ecstatic! He took off his taped up shoes and put on his new ones. Mom was in tears and was very thankful for the gift. Since then, Jason wears his new shoes and he feels more confident and happy.

Commitment to Family and Youth Volunteerism

Youth volunteerism affects important work-related and social outcomes by strengthening work values and the sense of importance of community involvement: it is the best predictor of adult engagement in volunteer activities and service to their communities.

Since 2006, My New Red Shoes has involved thousands of children in service projects in support of our mission by working through schools and youth service organizations. In 2012, we implemented a strategic partnership with the Girl Scouts of Northern California, which has enabled us to help the Girl Scouts achieve their goals for promoting confidence, courage and character through service as we work to engage their vast network of young women and families in support of My New Red Shoes’ mission.
