ANNUAL REPORT

OurExtraordinaryTeamWORKING TOGETHER FOR A COMMON PURPOSE

1117-14 ACC 2014 Annual Report.indd 2-3 5/21/15 1:15 PM

A Letter from the President I am very thankful for all the people who help Access Services successfully fulfill its mission. This includes the people we serve; our staff and associates; our donors; and other stakeholders. What a wonderful team we have!

A team is capable of accomplishing things that no individual, no matter how multi- talented, can do alone. Achieving meaningful outcomes, year after year, is possible because we are committed to a common vision and purpose. We are committed also to work in unity for the improvement of the services we provide rather than for the advancement of individual members.

Teamwork is one reason Access Services once again received Philadelphia Business Journal’s 2014 “Best Places to Work” Award. This award honors the entire organization and reflects the accomplishments of a staff dedicated to serving close to 4,000 individuals. Our success depends on each one of these individuals receiving the tailored help and support they need to live, work and enjoy life in their communities.

Our revenues grew by almost 5% in 2013-2014, which is excellent in this current environment. Among our accomplishments was the expansion of our Adult Mobile Crisis supports and growth in programs providing children’s services and mental health supports.

Nonprofit organizations face many challenges today. Access Services continues to meet these challenges and move the organization forward by finding new opportunities for service. What a blessing it is to be part of a team that has a positive impact on people’s lives and makes a significant difference in our communities!

We continue to strive to be the provider of choice for people needing services, the employer of choice for high-quality professionals seeking employment, and the charity of choice for donors with a heart for our mission.

On behalf of everyone at Access Services, let me thank each of you for your support this past year. We look forward to working with you as a member of our team in 2015!

Sincerely,

Rob W. Reid President & CEO

Rooting for the

“Home Team”The LifeSharing ProgramThe Access Services Team has several star players, among them are the families and individuals who join the Lifesharing Program. In this program, a Host Family has the opportunity to share their lives with a child or adult with a developmental disability. Family support and assistance enriches the lives of the developmentally disabled person by affording them the opportunity to become a fully participating member of their community and empowering them to reach for and achieve their goals and aspirations. Just like in any team, the “wins” are celebrated. These victories include milestones such as becoming independent, learning life skills, or simply gaining the security of a caring family and a safe place to call home.

Brooke and Mary are an exemplary story of this process in action. Brooke was about eighteen years old when she met Mary, who became her caregiver. Mary was an experienced caregiver, having spent much love, time and energy taking care of family members such as nieces and nephews, and her partner, Jim, during the last years of his life. Mary had even cared for Brooke’s mother, and Brooke had previously enjoyed weekend visits to see her mother at Mary’s home.

Sadly, Brooke’s mother experienced a major stroke, and she required skilled nursing care, and left Mary’s home. Shortly thereafter, Brooke’s father passed away. Mary once again opened her heart and her home, this time to Brooke.

Brooke, who has limited communication skills, has benefitted from Mary’s attention and dedication. Brooke’s quality of life has improved greatly through Mary’s kindness, and in turn Brooke has increased the joy in Mary’s life, as Mary shares her home and her heart.

The Lifesharing program played a vital role in supporting Brooke and enabling Mary to host Brooke. While Mary met Brooke’s every day needs, Lifesharing financial support met both their financial needs. Through this

program Mary receives monetary compensation as well as invaluable training and support. Since joining the program Brooke has flourished even more in both her communication and social skills, making many new friends through work and community events.

Today, both Brooke and Mary have found ways to give back to the community through an impressive collection and donation network. Brooke assists in the collection of plastic caps, aluminum can tabs, crushed aluminum cans, and newspapers in great quantities. She has even set up a symbiotic exchange program with a school in Plymouth Township to swap can tabs for plastic caps. The proceeds are used to make donations to a Children’s Hospital, a local Church, a local volunteer Fire Company, and for a program to assist those with low income or limited insurance in need of cancer treatment.

It sounds like this team has scored big— becoming like a family, and an integral part of the community!

Exciting Adventures Build Skills and Relationships

One of many programs geared toward vulnerable young people, The Youth Outdoor Expedition program began in 2004 and has since fostered confidence, growth, skills and friendships between countless teens – some who return year after year to participate in, or work in, the program.

Each expedition trip pairs hard work with a lot of fun, and builds skills that will last a lifetime.Returning campers, Nick and Drew, pictured here, have incorporated the skills and activities they learned with the program into their daily lives, have built a strong friendship with each other and their expedition leader. In turn, they have inspired others.
