from the executive directorLike so many businesses in our nation the BHI Conservancy turned a corner in 2015, shifting from managing risk and loss to managing growth and opportunity. While not without challenges, the organization achieved milestones and discovered new opportunities.

The BHI Conservancy depends on the engagement of a very active Board of Directors. Each Board member gives according to his/her abilities. The staff at the Conservancy leans on our Directors as a sounding board for important information and for leadership in new initiatives. Al Buzzard and Larry Lammert have developed Turtle Trots as a new opportunity to reach out to our diverse community and share our turtle conservation program. Paul Mugge continues to support our partnership with the Museum of Natural Science in Raleigh. Sheila and John May took on the picnic with Howard and Mary Jo Walker. Sheila and John are also responsible for our very successful fishing school. Larry Lammert’s efforts yielded a wonderful morning with Coach Harbaugh and a fund that supported bringing high school students from Whiteville to the island. Paul Butler supported our partnership with the Wildlife Resource Commission. Dick and Pat Johnston co-chaired our Annual fund with Marianna and Slaughter Fitz-Hugh. Melanie Robbins and Shawn Smith were active with reengaging old and new SILT friends, giving the organization new direction. Kathy and Bob Ketels continued their leadership in our membership campaign. Martha Anderson represented the Conservancy at the BHA wind energy meetings. Vivian DeRiv-ero led our silent auction at the picnic and was a frequent volunteer at Turtle Trots. Hunter Jenkins, Kelly Witter, Ted Richman, Susan Baker, Martha Anderson and Ken Reckhow served our Conser-vation and Education committee with input on community outreach and education pieces, and mentored interns. Jock Clark provided valuable feedback at board meetings. David Fischer provided important legal expertise for land preservation. Alice Horton served on our Finance and Operations committee and oversaw improvements to the campus. Lee Wester continues her family ’s legacy of serving the Conservancy on the board and at Turtle Central. I’ve only captured a fraction of the many ways that this important group of people comes together to support the BHI Conservancy. Thank you 2015 Board of Directors

The BHI Staff implements the strategic priorities of the Board and oversees the operations of the BHI Conservancy. I am grateful everyday to lead a group of professionals that not only perform tirelessly, but tends to have a pretty good time while doing it!

• Mike Thomasen is our “junior naturalist” and maintenance specialist at the BHI Conservancy. Mike is the glue that keeps this staff together, providing a laugh or a shoulder as needed. You may not know that Mike is our number one salesperson for the BHI Community Directory! • Elyse Brown and her Assistant Manager Pam Smith work everyday to meet the demands of customers, and provide a gateway to our organization. • Our part-time staff at Turtle Central ensures that each customer receives the genuine welcome. Carol O’Donnell and Sharon Eisele are fabulous representatives of the BHI Conservancy.• Caroline Shepherd keeps track of our finances and serves as an important source of educa-tion for our younger professional staff. “Mama” Caroline always supports staff through the complexities of finance.

• Poul Lindegaard has served as the Assistant Director for a little over six months. His role in working through partnerships has been invaluable to our success with NC State. Two important outcomes include the installation of our NC Climate Office weather station and a proposal submitted with an academic partner.• Pam Cunningham has been invaluable this year. She has provided oversight in finance and development while reducing expenses by managing purchasing. We are so grateful to work with Pam whose attention to detail is a secret weapon at the BHI Conservancy. • Amy Eldredge is our “empress of education,” also known as our coastal educator. She works weekends and nights to ensure that you and yours have access to the best outdoor education programs anywhere around! She manages our interns to ensure they not only meet our expecta-tions, but also make progress towards their professional goals.• One of two new staff members, Amber Walters, brought new energy to the organization. Amber produced a new web site in record time. We have benefited from her excellent communi-cation skills and warm personality.• Jenna Kovacic is one of the most compassionate people I met. Many of you have received hand written cards from Jenna. She is a wonderful relationship builder with our development team. • Some of you may not have met our temporary conservation staff. Dane Horowski, Will Benfield and Emily Hardin implemented our conservation responsibilities after Courtney Spears left in September. Each one took on projects from deer to rats. Dane will stay on in 2016 working primarily on the deer management program. Will Benfield, a geologist by training, will also contin-ue to support implementation of our Conservation responsibilities in 2016. Emily has moved on to a project in Florida.

BHI Conservancy Volunteers support our mission throughout the organization. Our turtle program depends on nest monitors lead by Suzie Buzzard. Turtle Central’s volunteers are lead by Susan Baker. Zeda Lee volunteers the most hours with our education team. Sallye Richards supports our administrative efforts weekly. These are just a few heroes. This year well over 200 dedicated people gave their precious time in support of your Conservancy. Thank you seems too small a word.

The BHI Conservancy provided important information to our community on topics that impact life on our dynamic coastline. Conservation staff provided information on topics from roof rats to oil and gas harvesting. Our professional staff seeks to provide our constituents with objective interpretation and connection to information relevant to your vision of living in harmony with nature.

In other mission based work we had an abundant sea turtle season with 119 nests in the combined areas of BHI and our adjacent state natural area. Our nest monitors sure had their hands full with excavations throughout late summer and fall sometimes reaching 200 attendees!

Our 2015 year was a turnaround year. Improvements throughout the organization improved our ability to serve our constituents. We continue to try to provide a great place to work so our valuable staff can continue the good work of 2015.
