The mission of the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust is to engage, educate and inspire the public through architecture, design and the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, and to preserve the Trust’s historic sites and collections.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
2013 has been a year of expansion for the Trust. In August, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to add Unity Temple to the Trust’s sites.
Thanks to the vision of the congregation and restoration foundation of Unity Temple, we assumed responsibility for tours and programs at Wright’s greatest Prairie style public building located just a few blocks from the Home and Studio in Oak Park. Unity Temple strengthens our Oak Park presence and brings our Frank Lloyd Wright Trust sites to a total of five, located in every direction from our central offices in downtown Chicago.
The Board voted in September to update the Trust’s name, and begin doing business as the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. This change refreshed our name, making it simpler, stron-ger, and easier to remember. Our mission and commitment to preservation remain unchanged. Over the course of the next year, if this new identity is effective and widely accepted, the Board will adopt Frank Lloyd Wright Trust as our corporate name.
With the expansion of our sites this year, the Trust grew its audience and introduced a number of new tours and programs. We also addressed much-needed preservation projects at the Home and Studio, which is now solely owned by the Trust and remains the busiest of our five sites.
For an exceptional year of growth and accom-plishment at the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust, I offer my sincere thanks to our donors, volunteers, members, friends and neighbors. To all those named in this report, my fellow Board officers and directors, our President & CEO Celeste Adams, our staff members and volunteers, I extend my appreciation for outstanding teamwork and dedication to our mission.

GATEWAY TO WRIGHT IN CHICAGO AND BEYONDThe addition of Unity Temple to our sites this year has given the Trust an important opportunity to tell a deeper and richer story about Wright’s creation of the Prairie style during the years he kept his studio in Oak Park. Completed in 1908, Unity Temple is the first great modern concrete design build-ing. While its exterior is simple and monolithic, the interior is filled with color and light, suggest-ing the illuminating power of spiritual kinship.
The close creative and physical connection between Unity Temple and Wright’s Oak Park Studio can now be presented in tours of these sites. In September, the Trust began train-ing sessions for interpreters at Unity Temple and the new tour program began in October. While the Home and Studio functions as an accredited house museum, Unity Temple re-mains an active place of worship for the Uni-tarian Universalist congregation that awarded the commission to Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905. The Trust and Unity Temple’s congrega-tion and restoration foundation have forged a
partnership that respects the spiritual function of Unity Temple while sharing its architectural brilliance with the public.
The Trust’s five Wright sites weave a rich and compelling story about Wright’s Chi-cago years from his arrival as a young man of twenty, training in Louis Sullivan’s office, to an architect of international stature, known in Europe where his Wasmuth portfolio was published in 1910, to the commission of the Imperial Hotel in Japan, which would engage him until 1922. Telling the story of these years through the experience of our Chicago sites brings an authentic understanding of Wright’s ground-breaking achievement. The Trust is now truly the gateway to Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago.
In November 2013, the Trust continued to expand its reach with the launch of the new website flwright.org. This mobile responsive site features information about each of our five historic sites in the Chicago area and links to Wright public sites across the country. The website is an in-depth resource of information about Wright’s Chicago years and includes videos and advance ticketing and donation

functionalities that are user friendly. The full range of Trust programs and activities can be accessed on flwright.org, from shopping to international travel. The new website is a state-of-the-art design serving as a gateway to Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago.
TOURS AND PUBLIC PROGRAMSIn keeping with a Chicago-wide presence, the Trust implemented its most ambitious new tour this year titled Wright Around Chicago. Offered as a summer weekly program, Wright Around Chicago bus tours covered all Trust sites in one day with guides providing in-depth information about Frank Lloyd Wright and his Chicago years. In summer 2013, the bus tours served 275 visi-tors. The Trust also participated in the citywide event Open House Chicago at Bach House and Robie House with a total of 2,500 visitors.
Theme tours expanded in 2013 with Pedal Oak Park adding Fridays to the already popu-lar Saturday and Sunday schedule. At Robie House, April and October After Hours featured a series of evening speakers, including architects Stanley Tigerman and Margaret McCurry, to

celebrate the opening of the Seminary Co-op Bookstore, which they designed, adjacent to Robie House. 2013 attendance for tours and programs at the Trust’s five sites totaled 140,475: Home and Studio 92,075; Robie House 39,600; The Rookery 3,800; Unity Temple (October-December) 3,330; Bach House (July-September) 1,670. In 2013, the Trust commenced a two-year series of lecture programs tracing the international influences on Frank Lloyd Wright during the early years of his career as a designer and architect. Made possible by a generous grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art, Frank Lloyd Wright: Origins and Influences was presented in the Pritzker Auditorium of the Monroe Building and presentations video-recorded for online viewing on flwright.org.
The Summer 2013 lectures in this series were Common Cause: Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright by Pamela Robertson, Professor of Mackintosh Studies and Senior Curator at the Hunterian Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow; The English Arts and Crafts Movement in America: Opposing Ends of the Same Stick by Anne Mallek, Curator of the Gamble House in Pasadena;
An Architectural Love Affair: Dutch Modernists and the Work of Frank Lloyd Wright by Wim de Wit, Adjunct Curator of the Cantor Art Museum at Stanford University and Consulting Curator for the Getty Research Institute. The series will continue in summer 2014.
A new Frank Lloyd Wright Trust Community Enrichment Series was launched this year with six lectures at three locations: Oak Park, downtown Chicago, and Hyde Park. Speak-ers included Frank Lipo, Executive Director of the Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest; Christopher Payne, architect and Oak Park resident; Diane Dillon, Director of Scholarly and Undergraduate Programs at Newberry Library; John Eifler, preservation and design architect; David Bagnall, Curator at the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust; and Paul Durica, Hyde Park historian.
The third annual program for Thinking into the Future: The Robie House Series on Architecture, Design and Ideas was presented at the University of Chicago’s Logan Center for the Arts. Chicago architect Adrian Smith, re-nowned as the designer of some of the world’s tallest buildings, addressed an audience of

over 300 on Supertall Towers and Green Cities. Smith shared his work on Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates and commented on Wright’s 1938 concept for Mile-High Tower. He discussed the importance of creating highly sustainable projects in context with the global environment and shared his plans with partner Gordon Gill for Great City, a green satellite city of Chengdu, China.
In 2013, the Trust’s Travel Wright program, hosted four trips around the United States and abroad: Wright in Racine in January; Wright in Arizona in February; Town and Country: Wright in Chicago and Wisconsin in August; and Morris to Mackintosh: British Arts and Crafts in the U.K. in September. The U.K. program was so popular that it was immedi-ately reoffered for 2014.
EDUCATIONIn 2013, Trust outreach educators worked with over 3,000 students, led 56 workshops and 18 special multi-session program, including Reading, Writing, and Robie House; Build It Wright; Focus on Japan; Little Builders; and Art Start. The Trust also marked its tenth year presenting in-class workshops and Home
and Studio tours to fourth graders attending public schools within Oak Park Elementary School District 97. With more than 6,000 participants to date, the program has become a rite of passage for local school children.
In conjunction with the Chicago Public Library’s Summer Learning Challenge, the Trust presented arts and architecture work-shops for youth and families at ten city branch libraries. Featured in the citywide arts program Big Draw Chicago, the Trust’s Hokusai Drawing Lessons attracted a capacity turnout.
Family workshops at the sites had attendance of 340 during 2013. Forty-two middle and high school students participated in Youth Architecture Summer Workshops at the Home and Studio, creating their own building designs under the guidance of a professional architect.
In 2013, the Trust hosted educator programs for nearly 100 teachers within the Chicago area. Key offerings included the Robie House Teacher Project (funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art), Educator Open Houses, and Teacher Custom Workshops. The Trust also

will be posting teaching units as part of the Terra Foundation website’s portal of online educational resources.
PRESERVATIONIn 2013, the Fisherman and the Genie mural above the fireplace in the playroom of the Home and Studio was restored. Painted by Charles Corwin in collaboration with Wright, the composition depicts the architect’s favorite story from The Arabian Nights. A century’s worth of dirt and grime had darkened the mural to the point that its subject was nearly unreadable. Before restoration began, the playroom roof was sealed and made environmentally responsive. The conservation’s results were dramatic. Paint colors became more vibrant; the composition displayed a greater sense of depth; and the painting assumed a powerful central presence in the space, revealing Wright’s original vision of the room and its decoration.
In 2013, the Trust also repaired the Home and Studio’s front veranda, Forest Avenue concrete wall, and garage parapet wall and cantilevers. These projects were completed as part of the preparation for the 2014 Legacy Year to commemorate the Home and Studio’s 125th year.

DEVELOPMENTEncompassing the Chairman’s Reception, Ultimate Plus, and the annual Housewalk, total revenue earned by Wright Plus in 2013 increased by $50,000 compared to the previous year.
Co-chaired by Karen and Don Rosenwinkel, CEO of Big Monster Toys, the Chairman’s Reception raised funds for the restoration of the children’s playroom mural at the Home and Studio. Major sponsors of the 2013 Chairman’s Reception included the Rosenwinkels and Big Monster Toys, Mattel Inc., Ogilvy & Mather, Michael S. Mensik and Baker & McKenzie, Hasbro, Segal, Bulley & Andrews, Cornerstone National Bank, JW Marriott Chicago, and Niro, Haller & Niro.
In addition, the Trust secured support for the 2013 Housewalk from the following corporate sponsors: Whole Foods, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Carleton of Oak Park, Christy Webber Land-scapes, Downtown Oak Park, ComEd, Commu-nity Bank of Oak Park River Forest, Greenline Wheels, Marion Street Cheese Market, Visit Oak Park, and Winberie’s.
Surpassing its goal of $60,000, the 2013 An-nual Fund Appeal raised $87,000 for general
operations, with major gifts from Tawani Foun-dation, Lars and Mary Lofgren, Ken and Patty Hunt, and Sidley Austin LLP.
In 2013, the Trust secured grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Terra Foundation for American Art, Oak Park Area Arts Council, Illinois Arts Council: Partners in Excellence, Illinois Depart-ment of Economic Opportunity: Marketing Partnership Program, and Illinois Department of Economic Opportunity: Tourism Attraction Development Program. Alphawood Foundation awarded a lead gift to the final phase of the Robie House restoration, which has sparked additional solicitations to complete this important project.
On June 17, 2013, the Trust convened major donors to the Campaign for the Purchase of Wright’s Home and Studio and unveiled a com-memorative plaque to acknowledge their role in this landmark acquisition. Ownership of the Oak Park site where Wright’s career began has trans-formed the spirit of the Trust, strengthening our commitment to preserve Wright’s original sites in our community and tell the extraordinary story of his accomplishments here.
