LetterMaking life better for people. At the end of the day, this is why we are all in business.

Our businesses make life better by feeding and powering the world, bringing new technologies

to market, connecting people, improving our communities, supporting causes and delivering

value to our shareholders.

The Business Council of Alberta was born out of love for our province and country and a desire

to build greater prosperity for Albertans of today and tomorrow. The Council supports

businesses across this province to boldly and collectively step forward into that role, to build

businesses that contribute to the world’s greatest needs and create jobs that enable every

Albertan to live the life they aspire to.

The Council was created to be a leader on the most critical issues of our time: future of energy

and environment policy, innovation ecosystem enhancement, poverty reduction, and Alberta’s

place in the federation, among others. Many of these are reaching a pivotal moment, and your

leadership is already having an impact.

As we mark the first year since the Council’s founding, there were many

accomplishments; however, we would like to highlight two that are particularly meaningful.

First, the support from Alberta’s business community has

been tremendous. We took it as a sincere vote of confidence

that virtually every executive we invited to be a founding

member of the Council immediately said yes. You saw the

vision for the Business Council of Alberta and chose to

support it with your most valuable resources: your time and

energy.

Second, because of that support, the Council rapidly

became one of the most sought-after and influential policy

organizations on issues related to Alberta prosperity. That

has already resulted in tangible policy improvement.

In the year and years ahead, we will be working to enhance our advocacy efforts with

the provincial and federal governments, build bold and innovative policy solutions and take

new action collectively as a business community, with one voice, to improve prosperity for the

people of this province, by extension Canada, and even around the world.

We thank you for your leadership in being part of it.

About the Business Council of Alberta

What We Have DoneWe believe business is a force for good. It creates opportunity, sustainability and prosperity for our communities, province and nation. Creating an environment to enable us to build Alberta’s future on purpose requires a strong vision, bold action and capable partnerships.

Since our public launch in June 2019, the Business Council of Alberta has quickly become one of the most consulted and respected policy organizations in the province, taking action and advocating to government, media and the public on issues and policies that we believe will increase economic and social prosperity.

Some highlights:

POLICY

• Released AlbertaBETTER, our inaugural policy and vision paper

• Launched first two task forces on Skills and Future Training and Resource Development in a Low Carbon Future

• Delivered a list of 10 bold ideas to the provincial government to quickly ignite Alberta’s economy; one of those ideas was implemented immediately

2020 PlanWe believe that when business does well, we all do well. However, at the time of the Council’s founding only 49% of Albertans believe that’s true. We need to improve that number – and we will do so through our work in supporting prosperity for all Albertans.

Highlights on what we are planning for 2020:

• Addressing the COVID-19 health and economic crisis through response advocacy andrecovery leadership initiatives to get Alberta’s struggling economy back on its feet in a globallycompetitive way

• Working with task force members and collaborators on a national consensus betweenresource development and climate change, as well as the innovation ecosystem

• Launching our own podcast, AlbertaBETTER

• Completing a research project with Ipsos on the perception and role of business in society

• Introducing the 2020 Alberta Prosperity Index

• Enhancing essential advocacy efforts with the federal and provincial governments on critical files

We thank all our members for joining with us to make life better for all Albertans and Canadians and to all our partners, stakeholders and supporters for enabling us to do this work.
