Yinnar

According to Wikipedia: Yinnar is a tranquil rural township located in the Latrobe Valley, in central Gippsland, Victoria. The origin of the name Yinnar is believed to have been derived from the Aboriginal term yinnar, meaning ‘woman’.

According to the 2016 Australian Census, Yinnar has a population of 860 making it the 3rd smallest population of the 10 MGFL / MGNA clubs. We are proud of our sustained performance both on and off the field that sees us ranked consistently higher than communities with significantly greater population bases from which to draw players, members, supporters and sponsors.

This population reality and the challenge to secure the financial and people resources required to operate a consistently competitive level underpins our objective to be the “Club of choice” for the Yinnar community and neighbouring communities.

As a Club, we take pride in producing an Annual Report that will promote the Club and community, and serve as a permanent record and reminder of our on and off field performance and achievements over the season.

We strive to improve its content and presentation every year, hopefully this is apparent to its readers. The Club Committee particularly thanks Ryan & Kim Walsh, for some very special and memorable photos that makes the Annual Report such a great pictorial record of an enjoyable year for so many.

The aim of the Annual Report is to enable the Club Committee to report to members, sponsors and other key stakeholders on the performance of the Club over the 2018 football and netball season.

2018 has been another successful year for the Club. It is a key aim of the Club Committee to improve the management of specific areas where there is an opportunity to do so, and manage all other Club operations to at least the standard of prior seasons.

The future of the Club is dependent upon maintaining strong links with our community and offering recreation and leisure opportunities to all members of the Yinnar & district community. It is hoped that this Annual Report demonstrates that the Club is committed to these objectives and all that desire to be involved with the Club are able to participate in some way, on or off the field.

Every endeavour has been made to ensure the historical and statistical accuracy of this report. Should any reader be aware of an inaccuracy, or may assist with providing missing information, it would be greatly appreciated if the Club Secretary is informed.

The Club Committee hopes you find the Annual Report useful and informative reading.

On behalf of the Club Committee, we are very pleased to present the Yinnar Football & Netball Club’s 135th annual report to our life members, members, sponsors, supporters and community.

The 2018 Club Senior Football & Netball Presentation saw the induction of 3 new Life Members: Greg Linton, Liam Visser and Diane Penney. Life Membership is the highest honour the Club bestows on an individual and the service Greg, Liam and Di have racked up is indeed extensive. Much loved (even you Greg!) and admired by many, the Club Executive were impressed when presented with their collective credentials as nominees for Life Membership.

Congratulations Greg, Liam and Di, your contribution has made major difference to the Yinnar Football & Netball Club, and our community. Well done, and thank you.

The Club Committee requested the assistance of members to determine the recipient of our highest individual honour awarded on an annual basis - the Ross Sewell Memorial for Best Club Person. Members voted or the people they believed worthy of receiving this prestigious award.

Votes were independently counted by Life Members Chris Long & Don Barnes with the winner announced at the Club Presentation Night. Congratulations to all nominees and in particular Peter Quigley, winner of the 2018 Ross Sewell Memorial for Best Club Person – for the 7th time.

Some of the year’s major issues, highlights, challenges and achievements are detailed in the Executive Report to members. 2018 proved to be a challenging year, with Club President Peter Linton announcing his standing down from the position in May.

At a meeting held just prior to the announcement the Club Executive resolved not to appoint an acting President at that time, deciding to take a shared leadership approach pending an ongoing appointment to the role. This was to allow the next YFNC President to be appointed in a considered manner and not rush or be rushed into a decision.

As the current Club Executive members indicated they were not a candidate for the Presidents role, it provided an opportunity for the appointment of a President to take the Yinnar Football & Netball Club into its next era of success built on the existing strong foundation, both on and off the field.

At the end of the 2018 season, the Presidents role remained vacant, pending completion of a Club governance and operational review.

The Club has had a very stable off field leadership team for many years. 2018 saw several factors emerge that unless addressed in a considered way, may result in a weakening Club leadership and ultimately Club performance. These factors included:

• Resignation of the President in May due to health reasons.

• None of the existing Club Executive members declaring an intention to take on the Presidents role for 2019.

• The long serving Club Secretary advising the intention to vacate the role at the 2018 Annual General Meeting.

• A need for an invigorated off field leadership team to position the Club for the future.

In August 2018, the Club commenced a review of its operations to ensure we remain a progressive Club, and one that is positioned to meet its many future challenges. The review scope is to asses existing operating and governance activities to assess improvement opportunities in respect to the following (but not limited to): 1. Football off field leadership & operating structure 2. Whole of club governance structure / framework

3. One Club, one future objective

4. Easing the burden of our volunteers

5. Optimising Internal and external communication channels

6. Succession planning, on and off the field

It is expected a report review would be completed by late September 2018 for consideration by the Committee and adopted recommendations implemented for the 2019 season.

As part of the objective to reduce the workload on our volunteers, the Club further developed the functionality of the Tidy HQ platform, with focus over 2018 being:

• Implementation of the ‘Shop’ function, which saw all Club clothing ordering and payment moved to the platform. This saved hours of volunteer time, reduced the risk of cash management and resulted in far improved stock control. The function had some early teething challenges, but these were sorted and the function in now working very well.

• All documents are now stored in the Tidy HQ platform, not on laptops / hard drives / PC’s etc. This enables key Club personnel to access documents from anywhere, and saves a huge amount of wheel reinvention.

• The membership function continues to develop and this year saw minimal issues, and far greater ease of access for members to join, renew and pay on line.

A first for the Club in 2018, we engaged an administrative officer to undertake a range of administrative support functions that focused on services to our members, sponsors, suppliers, players & supporters. We were fortunate to secure the services of YFNC Life Member Cheridee Clissold to the casual role. Cheridee proved to be much more than a casual admin resource, her dedicated, no-nonsense get stuff done approach was just marvelous and a huge support to the Club Committee. Thank you Cheridee!

The Club continued to invest in the improvement of our facilities for the benefit of our players, members, volunteers, supporters and community. The Club invested over $24,000 in a range of capital works projects equipment acquisitions over 2018, further detail on these projects can be found in this report.

In the Executive Report we won’t got into too much detail on our football and netball operations, these are detailed elsewhere in the Annual Report. However, we will touch on two aspects here. In terms of football, all seven YFNC teams competed in the finals series, five in grand finals - what an achievement for such a small community. In respect to netball, 2018 saw our junior netball teams for the first time, play in the Moe & District Netball Competition. The comp saw a new excitement in our junior netball ranks, which is a real positive in many ways. Thanks to Net Poole, first time coordinator – who undertook the role with great

professionalism, energy and enthusiasm – well done and thanks Net!

Early in the season, the Club made the decision to do what it could to support the Base-d On a Cause initiative – comprising team members Luke Norder, Dan Nardino, Maddie Burney & Ryan Pollock. Their families have been part of our club and community for decades and made a huge contribution to it and our club, so it was an opportunity to help out and pay back some of their contribution. From the teams Facebook page:

Base-d On a Cause is a couple of mates banding together to make a difference for people suffering from MS, Mental Health and Cancer and the ongoing research and dedicated support required to alleviate the daily burdens both individuals and their loved ones face. Millions of Australians are affected and sadly, the amount of people that know someone impacted or have been directly impacted by these devastating conditions appear to be growing. The Base-d on a Cause team have personally been directly affected and look forward to reaching new heights to promote community donations.

The Club dedicated our practice match V Gormandale as a Base-d On a Cause fund raiser - resulting in $4,154.70 being raised, a terrific effort and we were very proud and honored to be part of the effort.

No community based organisation can assist without a huge contribution from volunteers. The YFNC has in excess of 100 people that put up their hand, contribute week in week out without fuss or fanfare or drama – thank you, our volunteers make our Club and all should be very proud of what we achieve – together.

We trust you have enjoyed season 2018 and we look forward to your continued support, and your enjoyment of the Club community in season 2019.

The Yinnar township and district were visited this year by The Citizen, a publication of the Centre for Advancing Journalism. It has several aims. Foremost, it is a teaching tool that showcases the work of the students in the University of Melbourne’s Master of Journalism and Master of International Journalism programs, giving them real-world experience in working for publication and to deadline.

The result was a series of six feature articles, two of them particularly relevant to our Club. They are special and we encourage all to visit: www.thecitizen.org.au/categories/a-day-in-the-life-of-yinnar

The features are on senior player Dean Linton and Yinnar legends Bill & Jean Welsh.

In addition to recognising outstanding off field contribution, Club policy is that players who achieve on field service of 200 senior / reserve football (adopted 1993) or senior netball matches (adopted 1996) are eligible to be nominated for Life Membership. Life Members include:

Life Members in 2018The 2018 Club Presentation night saw the induction of 3 new Life Members, the highest individual honour that a member can achieve. Congratulations to:

Liam Visser

A Club ‘favourite son’, both on and off the field. A product of our juniors, Liam played his first senior game whilst in the 3rds, and has never looked back. Played in the higher level Gippsland League for a few years, returning to Yinnar as a multiple senior premiership player, Club & League best & fairest winner. ‘Retired’ a few years ago, itchy feet ensured a return to senior ranks and the achievement of 200 club games, a marvelous career topped off by the Club highest honor – Life Membership.

Greg Linton

An active volunteer for around 25-30 years – since the ‘bad old days’ when Yinnar were always on the bottom of the ladder – always.

Has undertaken jobs like barman / Thursday night Chef (creator of the famous ‘Linton Dogs’ gourmet hot dogs) / gate keeper etc etc.

Supported both football and netball through the toughest of times. Contributor to many a working bee and unofficial Club boilermaker and also to many Yinnar Rec Reserve projects.

Greg married well, then went on to have a role in producing 3 fine footballers / netballers, which in a small community is gold. Always there, always helping, always contributing, always with a minimum of fuss and absolutely no want of recognition. Bad luck Greg, you have been recognised, and rightly so. Di Penney

Di joined YFNC in 2003 and continues her significant service today to this day. Di has served the Club in varying capacities and roles such as several time netball premiership player, volunteer netball umpire & umpire coordinator, member of the Club MGNA Committee & Club Committee of Management, netball coach and club trainer for the past 5 seasons. And always entertaining!

This now brings the Life Member Honour Board roll call 102 Life Members, which is perhaps reflective of the clubs strategy to attract, retain and reward people, our players and volunteer people – on a long-term basis. Looking at the player career to date tallies, they are a significant number of footballers and netballers who have racked up impressive careers, together with pretty substantial off field contributions. It is not unreasonable to see Life Members numbers increase further in coming years.

Key Partners

The Club participated in a number of programs that essentially strengthened our Cub and assisted in promoting a number of health and wellbeing matters that are highly important and relevant to the community we serve. These include:

Good Sports works together with local sporting clubs to build a healthier sporting nation. Good Sports support local sports clubs, social teams and elite clubs at the pinnacle of their profession. The Good Sports Program has helped over 8700 sporting clubs across Australia provide a safe and inclusive environment, where everyone can get involved.

YFNC is a Level 3 Good Sports Accredited Club. Level 3 puts everything into practice from levels 1 and 2 to create a comprehensive alcohol management policy for the club. The policy is developed in level 3 because it is important that clubs change their alcohol management practices before the document is written. This ensures the policy is embedded into management and culture, making the operating procedures sustainable. By completing level 3, clubs have reached the top of the Good Sports program and will continue to maintain their level 3 status, opening up opportunities for more participants, spectators and sponsors, along with a vastly improved environment for children and families.

SEA is a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation that aims to provide the sports industry with the knowledge and networks to become environmental stewards and generate change in the sporting community for the good of the environment.

The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation is here to support people affected by gambling harm, including family and friends. We take a public health approach to our work, which means we focus on prevention, early intervention and support for those who are particularly vulnerable to gambling harm as well as those living in regional and rural communities. • By signing the charter, we support separating ‘the game’ from gambling. We will ensure our club is a safe and healthy environment in relation to gambling. • As a club, we understand the important role we play in the community in encouraging healthy lifestyles. We acknowledge that we have a responsibility to minimise any potential harm from gambling. • We accept a shared responsibility for generating awareness of the risks associated with gambling and encouraging the community to love the game, not the odds.

We are committed to minimising the exposure of young people to gambling activities and to gambling promotion.

The Club appreciate the contribution of Lauren Sewell in her dual role as YFNC netball coach & LCHS Responsible Gambling Project Officer in assisting with our Love the Game Round – which features our netballers in a short video promoting the benefits of playing sport in a healthy club environment. Check it out at on the Club website, it’s worth a look.

Most Disciplined Player Award was introduced by Sports Focus in conjunction with the Victoria Police in 1997. This award acknowledges those who: • Understand and abide by the rules of competition; • Demonstrate sportsmanship at all times; and • Show respect to officials, players and supporters.

The Executive, via the Club Secretary, has primary responsibility for Committee business and planning, policy development and communication.

OPERATING PLAN

The aim of the Club Committee Operating Plan is to provide a framework for Club operations for the season. It is not an exhaustive list of tasks that require completion by the Committee or Sub Committees, but a listing of approximately 60 key matters that need to be actioned if the Club is to be managed appropriately. Other tools that are used to support or compliment the Operating Plan include position descriptions, policies, procedures and operating guidelines.

32

OPERATING PLAN The Club has six key aims on which guide the Committee in its decision making throughout the season. As part of its planning process and as an input to the Annual Operating Plan, the Committee determined a number of strategies that supports achievement of the Club aims. These are as follows:

1. Maximises the recreation, leisure and social opportunities for our community;

• The Club will ensure that it fields the highest number of football & netball teams at all levels to maximise participation.

• Entry-level development programs such as Auskick and Net Set Go will be conducted and supported to provide a non-competitive pathway into junior and senior grades.

• Membership packages will be designed to cater for people of all ages to be Club members at lowest possible cost.

2. Promote, encourage and foster the games of Australian football and netball within our community;

• The Club will actively promote, publicise and encourage the achievements of our Club and players within the community.

• Development initiatives will be linked to those of parent organisation and development bodies to enable a consistent approach to furthering football and netball within the community.

3. Provide an accessible, welcoming, inclusive and rewarding environment for all people associated with our Club;

• The Club will operate 100% smoke free facilities.

• Alcohol will be managed responsibly to ensure a family friendly Club environment.

• A range of codes of conduct will assist in creating an appropriate Club environment and ensures appropriate behaviours for all involved in the Club.

• The Club will support, recognise and reward its volunteers.

4. Strive to be a leader in football and netball management so the long term success and stability of the games within our community are maximised;

• Initiatives to strengthen Club administration will be considered and implemented as part of the annual planning cycle.

• Where appropriate, the Club will be a partner in innovative programs available through government and parent bodies both on and off the field.

• The Club will have in place a range of policies, and make operational decisions, that take into account its long term development, stability and success.

5. Take a whole of Club approach to the development of football and netball, to ensure our Club’s future is as far as possible ‘generated from within’;

• The Club will implement an annual football & netball development plan that assists in fostering the games within the community.

• The Club will develop close relationships with local schools and will assist and support them to conduct football and netball activities and matches.

• Junior Committees and their coaching staff will be appropriately trained and resourced to ensure that the players participating at this level have the greatest opportunity to continue playing at Yinnar and into senior ranks.

6. Approach the leadership and management of our Club from the basis of establishing and maintaining strong internal and external relationships and partnerships;

• The Club recognises both the responsibility and need to work with and support others to contribute to the development of our Club and community.

• Where appropriate, Club resources and facilities will be made available to assist other organisations in the conduct of their activities.

• The Club will establish and build relationships with key stakeholders within football, netball and the local communities.

• The Club will openly report to its members and stakeholders at least annually.

Financial StatementThe task of managing Club finances is a considerable one, we run a small business and with that comes significant responsibility and workload. Andrew Jenkins did a pretty amazing job as Treasurer in 2018 and we thank him sincerely.

Not only is the role a voluntary one, it carries the added responsibility of managing other people’s money – our members funds. AJ undertook this role with what could be described as understated confidence and competence and uber reliability.

The Stripe payment function hit it straps this year and made the Treasurers role simpler (to a degree) by reducing cash payments and automating primarily membership, clothing and event cash transactions.

The Club was able to report a reasonable trading profit on turnover in excess of $270k. It is important the Club continues to make a profit so that in turn it can invest in improving our facilities for the benefit of our players, members, supporters, volunteers and the Yinnar community.

The Club invested just over $23,000 in 2018 improving equipment and facilities that are integral to ensuring the environment in which our players and volunteers function is as good as it can be. These capital projects and purchases are detailed elsewhere in this report.

Due to a number of factors, some expenditure attributable to the 2017 season was not brought to account at the end of last season and was paid for in the 2018 season, distorting to a degree the financial performance of both reporting periods.

The following table details the impact on reported end 2017 and commencing 2018 cash balances. This is necessary to ensure there is clarity on actual operating activities and performance over both reporting periods.

Recognising Our VolunteersThe Club is fortunate to have a large number of people that willingly put up their hand to make sure what needs to be done week in week out gets done – and consistently.

It is the aim of the Club Committee and Sub Committees to recruit retain and recognise as many volunteers as possible to assist in operation of the Club so as to spread the workload and not place too great a load on any one person, hopefully leading to a longer term involvement from all participating.

Some of the ways that the Club recognises our volunteers are:

• Worker of the Week in the MGFL Spectator • Invitations to the Club Annual Luncheon• The annual Appreciation Function, held prior to the AGM

The Club continued its commitment to the upgrade of facilities at the Yinnar Recreation Reserve in partnership with the Committee of Management and other user groups. This will ensure that quality facilities are provided for the benefit of players, members, supporters and the Yinnar community on an ongoing basis.

An investment of over $23,000 was made by the Club on the following key projects and purchases through 2018:

EASTERN OVAL KITCHEN UPGRADE PROJECT

This project was jointly undertaken by the YFNC, Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, Morwell Tigers Yinnar Cricket Club & Yinnar & District Judo Club. We acknowledge grant funding received from the Latrobe City Council & Yinnar Community Hotel Co-operative that enabled the needed and long-awaited project to be delivered. Total grant funds were $22,500 – total project cost of $33,000.

The difference between grant funds and total project cost ($10.5k) was contributed by the YRR CoM, with call on user groups. This does highlight one of the many benefits we have as a member of the wholly community managed and operated Reserve, which is the envy of many and certainly a key asset for the Yinnar & District community.

The efforts of YFNC Life Member and YRR CoM President Don Barnes as Project Manager requires special mention, and ensured the project was delivered to an exceptionally high standard.

The project not only provides a base for catering and canteen operations that is a pleasure to work in and meets all current health standards, it provides a multi-purpose meeting space that the eastern oval facilities have not had to date. Great outcome that exceeded all expectations.

FLAG POLE REPLACEMENT PROJECT

Partially funded through an AFL Vic WorkSafe grant ($1,000 with Club funds of $1800), this project saw four new flagpoles installed in the prime front of western

pavilion position, providing a focal point for the flying of Club and other event specific flags. The new poles replaced existing poles welded atop the pavilion roof, and removed the risk of having to get on the roof to fly flags. If you are wondering why the flag poles look millimeter perfect, it’s because a YFNC Life Member was project manager – outstanding, thanks Pete.

WESTERN OVAL SAFETY NET PROJECT

Another project that has been on the priority list for a few years, now done with Club funds exceeding $13k. The project took significant planning, including soil tests, building permits and other LCC permissions were required, but we got there. Thanks to Dean Suares for persisting with the approval process and to Engie for donating the poles which were surplus to requirements from the Hazelwood Open Cut. Getting them in the air and the old nets down took some effort, and we thank Kevin Burrows, Peter Fox & Greg Linton for their contribution – along with a number of TA’s who helped on the day. The project removes the risk of footies getting out to Jumbuk Road and also reduced wear and tear on footies that don’t necessarily cope that well with bouncing across the bitumen. Apart from these project benefits the nets also look great and improve the amenity of the Reserve.

Other capital purchases and projects of note include:

• New AFL standard eastern oval siren, thanks Luke Bremner for sourcing and installing. Investment of $550.

• New joinery storage cupboards to support administration operations in the Club office and to assist our trainers in their facilities, thanks to Jack Buckley & Hi Tek Joinery for your work. Investment of approx. $3,200.

• New kitchen fridge to chill goods sold match days to ensure food safety standards, investment $300.

• Club camera costing $428 to reduce the reliance of volunteers equipment and to ensure a camera is always on hand for special events and occasions.

• New glass washer in the bar to replace the much loved ‘Rusty’ and to lessen the load on our volunteers, investment of $2,900.

Yinnar Recreation Reserve

The Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management provides a high standard of facilities for all members, players and supporters to enjoy. The Committee of Management is seen as a progressive group that works to continually improve facilities for user groups and the community. The Club acknowledges and appreciates the work of the Committee of Management, and in particular, the contribution made by Chris Long, Gordon Lont, Don Barnes & Jeff Knowles whose efforts directly assist and support our players and Club.

As part of its responsibility as a user group of the Yinnar Recreation Reserve, the Club must undertake all cleaning and rubbish removal tasks. Thanks to the senior and reserve football players who were rostered in teams to complete post-match change room cleaning, social room cleaning, and rubbish removal for the whole Reserve. The player’s contribution was appreciated, as are all volunteers who contribute to this magnificent facility.

This year saw Callum Alexander take on the role of organising maintenance repair works across our facilities. Thanks to Cal for your significant efforts and also to Nick Penny & Luke Bremner our ever efficient sparkies, and of course Sam & Paul McCulloch from McCulloch Plumbing.

A key feature of creating a positive, healthy and welcoming environment is providing nutritious and tasty meals for our players and volunteers, at functions / events / training / match days.

We may well be biased, but it is a fact we have the best catering crew of any club in Gippsland. Every week during the season, our players come off the track to enjoy a home cooked 2-course meal that would be the envy of any club. Similarly, the canteen operations of a home match are just first class, and for that we have many volunteers to thank. The core kitchen & canteen crew organisers comprised Sheryrn Linton, Dee Hendrikse & Trish Hicks. They were supported by key volunteers Sharon Kearns, Kerry Alexander, Lorna Sutcliffe, Leanne Linton, Nat Cheffers, Kim Walsh and Nicole Bugeja – along with a significant group of volunteers.

Sheryn, Dee & Trish announced their ‘retirement’ from Thursday night meal duty after 7 years of meritorious service, but will continue providing the best canteen service in the League (oops, Gippsland) in 2019. They leave big shoes to fill, and we are sure will assist the new chefs with plenty of tips and lessons learnt.

Add to our volunteers, thanks to the various netballers and footballers who pitch in – our catering operations are reflective of the importance placed on one of our key guiding principles: Provide an accessible, welcoming, inclusive and rewarding environment for all people associated with our Club

Thanks to everyone who assisted through donating food for the various functions and events, spent time in the kitchen as a volunteer, those that set up, cleaned up and ate up – a truly exceptional effort from all.

From Chris Stanlake, Committee President Season 2018 has come and gone and we’ve had another busy year, highlighted by our two reunion days. The first celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the 1998 senior and reserves football premierships along with 1998 A Reserve, C Grade & D grade premiership winning netball teams.

The second of our reunion days was the 10 year celebration of our 2008 Senior Premiership team. It was fantastic to see 19 of 21 players attend as well support staff and others from the 2008 playing group enjoying a catch up over a few social beers.

Our Committee once again recognised former junior players who played their first senior football or A grade netball game. Congratulations to all juniors on playing at the highest level possible at our club. These young players are the future of this great Club and we wish them success and a long career at Yinnar.

The booth bar and deck once again proved to be a very popular place to watch the footy. Thanks to all the Committee members who helped out during the year and a special mention to booth bar manager Mick Kearns and Rod Couling for setting up the bar every home game. Well done Mick & Rocket. A big thank you also must go to the many regulars (you know who you are) who supported us all year with very generous donations and support of the raffle

“Wheels Wheel” which once again proved very popular and lucrative for the Past Players and Officials Committee. A big thank you to all who played along adding to a real positive atmosphere on the deck. Thanks again to Dean (The Wheel) Suares for embracing it with such enthusiasm. It will return in 2019.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to shout out a massive thank you to our committee, Rod Couling, Shane Quigley, Paul Buckley, Andrew Nardino, Mick Kearns, Dean Suares, Sonia Williams and Lee Clarke. You should all be proud of your contribution to our great club. Thank you for all your support and look forward to seeing you all again next year.

At this stage the date for our PP&O AGM has not been decided but It would be great to see some new faces there so we can form another strong Committee for next year.

From Jamie Winters, Auskick Coordinator

2018 was another fun year with the Auskickers, some fresh Sunday morning starts but didn’t need to retreat to the sheds, keeping them moving but still a few chilly kids!

All in all most mornings turned out nice and sunny, parents always there to help and we all got plenty of laughs provided by the kids with the different activities.

It looks like 3 players will be joining the under 10’s next year, possibly more which is really good for our Auskick Program, the Club and community

We really enjoy watching the kids grow and improving with Auskick and looking forward to watching them develop through the juniors into the seniors.

Thanks to all my helpers, parents and also thanks for the support from the Club.

Our 2018 Auskickers were:

• Annie Bremner• Billy Bremner• Harvey Brighton• Sebastian Close• Quade Jobling• Finn Mahoney• Sonny Mahoney• Harvey McCartney• Austin McCulloch• Jackson O’Hara• Amelia Parry• Hudson Richer• Nicholas Spicer-Morris• Henry Try• Teddy Try• Cooper Webb• Joshua Webb• Royden Williams• Hayden Winters• Artan Young• Dusty Young• Kayla Young

Central Gippsland Junior Football League (CGJFL) Teams

UNDER 10, UNDER 12 & UNDER 14

From Ryan Walsh & Guy Cheffers, Club CGJFL Committee Executive

A great season was had in 2018 for Yinnar in the Central Gippsland Junior Football League. Our Club fielded three teams with a total of 75 kids participating at under 10, 12 & 14 levels combined. All three teams reached the finals with our 14’s bowing out by only 2 points in the preliminary final and the 10’s & 12’s making the Grand Final. Unfortunately the 10’s went down to Mirboo North but the 12’s took out the big one in emphatic style, with a big win over Leongatha.

There were some great individual efforts this year- Harvey McKay (U/10 League Leading Goal Kicker), Huntar Little (U/12 League Leading Goal Kicker), Luke Cheffers (U/12 League B & F Runner Up/ BOG in GF) and Harri McColl (All Stars Representative).

We were very fortunate to have some fantastic coaches in our ranks this year. Brent Ludlow took on the task of coaching under 10’s, Tim Mills under 12’s and Julian Schill / Shane McColl

for under 14’s. All did a great job, well supported by their team managers and volunteers.

We again would like to thank all for the support we received this year in running the season. The Senior Canteen ladies backed up our Junior canteen in making sure stock was ordered and available for each home game. We would also like to thank Brendan Chessum (Grounds), Steve & Kylie Pancutt (SP Admin/ Canteen) and Haylee Pollard (Canteen Coordinator) for their efforts.

The Eastern Oval canteen upgrade was finally completed this year and what a difference it has made. The transformation has been amazing and well received. To all that were involved- thank you for your efforts. A special mention needs to go out to Don Barnes for his coordination and communication efforts on the project.

Again, thanks all for a successful CGJFL season. Bring on 2019!!

SENIORS, RESERVES, UNDER 18 & UNDER 16

From: Dean Suares, Vice President Football

For the fifth consecutive season we had all four of our MGFL teams compete in the final series once again another exciting season for the Club.

Troy Makepeace took on the role of 4ths coach this season and his experience and vast knowledge of football certainly helped get the best out of a predominantly undersized and bottom age 4ths side.

Troy got the best out of the squad and had terrific support from parents week in week out. The fourths had a barnstorming finals series and made it through to the grand final where they were competitive for most of the match falling away in the last quarter. I would like to thank the many under 14 boys who stepped up each week to not only help but also contribute. We thank Troy and his support staff for their efforts this season.

Tyler Chisolm took on the difficult job of thirds coach this season as a first year coach; Tyler combined this role with also playing senior football each week. The thirds were very competitive all season and fell just short in the Preliminary final.

Tyler was a passionate coach and the players responded well with at least three playing extended football in the senior 18. We thank Tyler and his team manager Margaret and support staff for their passion and commitment towards our under 18 squad who even though were short of numbers remained top three all year. Again we thank the fourths player who doubled up most weeks. Our 3rds and fourths are the future of our club and it was great to have passionate and influential coaching staff on board.

James Mills in his third year as reserves coach again had a terrific season. Most weeks the reserves were undermanned due to the high injury and unavailability of the senior 18. Once again, the reserves finished top three winning their first final comfortably and then defeating the previously undefeated YYN in the second semi-final to progress through to the grand final.

With an injury depleted senior side the reserves played YYN again in the grand final but fell short at the end. We thank James and his support staff for their passion and commitment as coaching reserves football is not an easy challenge. James unique coaching style will be missed!

Jamie Aitken in his second season as senior coach once again recruited some quality players/people to the club, with a young localised leadership group, the seniors once again finished top three to qualify for the double chance, it was a difficult season losing key players to retirement, unavailability and injury giving the club a chance to play thirds and reserves players who acquitted themselves well, we lost our first final to Trafalgar and then went on to beat YYN in a thriller in the preliminary final to advance through to the grand final, with an injury depleted side we took it up to Trafalgar leading most of the day only to again fall short at the final siren.

The Cub would like to thank Jamie and especially his support staff who give up their time week in week out.

Finally, a big thankyou to all the tireless volunteers who assist in getting these sides onto the field each week, these teams would not be competitive without your wonderful support.

A GRADE, B GRADE, C GRADE, D GRADE, UNDER 17, UNDER 15

From Deirdre Buckley, Club MGNA Committee President

Well what a season for our coaches and players in 2018.

Our coaches for 2018 were Halie McColl, A grade, Ellie Young, B grade, Naomi Kearns, C grade, Lauren Sewell, D grade, Sue Hutchinson, 17’s, Cathy & Georgia Hutchinson, 15’s.

This year has been very successful for our netball teams with nearly all grades competing in the finals and our C grade winning the 2018 Premiership. A big congratulations to Naomi and her team.

The Club has always been very lucky with the calibre of our coaches, and this year was no exception, for our players to have these coaches, with their commitment, dedication, and enthusiasm coaching them was outstanding.

Congratulations to Mary Corponi Mid Gippsland runners up best and fairest for D grade, Hollie Bugeja Mid Gippsland best and fairest for 17’s. We also had girls play for State and Regional Leagues, Mid Gippsland squad, congratulation girls.

It’s always hard to find umpires to umpire 6 games every Saturday for 18 rounds, a big thank you to Janelle Szkwarek, Katie Vary, who are our Club umpires. Jenny Mills also umpired a lot of A & B games again this year, a very big thank you.

Thank you to parents that brought the junior girls to training, helped score, time keep, fill water bottles etc.

Our senior netballers a big thank you for doing canteen duty Saturday mornings before their game, scoring, time keeping, and packing up after the last game had concluded.

A Club is not successful unless they have a strong committee, ours consisted of Janelle Szkwarek Secretary, Sharon Kearns, Treasurer, General Committee, Pauline Couling, Linda Huzier, Leanne Linton, the players and I would like to thank you immensely.

This year the commitment and passion shown by our coaches and players were unbelievable, there is a great feeling amongst the Club, which showed in our successful year that we have had on and off the court, and one that I have been proud to be a part of.

I would like to thank everyone that made our Netball operation so competitive and successful this year.

Thanks, Dee.

From Net Poole, MDNA Coordinator Season 2018 saw the YFNC affiliation with the Churchill Indoor Netball Association (CINA) come to an end, with the folding of the association due to the low team numbers in their competition. This opened the door for our Club to enter the Moe & District Netball Association competition, that runs from their current outdoor courts on Savige’s Road in Moe of a Saturday morning.

We based our decision to leave CINA on many factors, finding the decision very difficult. We felt our players would benefit from the move to the MDNA, as the competition provides growth, development & a wider variety of competition for our young netballers. This competition also gives the opportunity for our players to play squad netball.

We would like to take this opportunity to express how grateful our club is to CINA for helping to develop many current day junior & senior netballers.

In 2018 we welcomed Tahlia Langan as our 9 & Under coach. Tahlia is a current senior player with the YFNC and has been for the past 5 years. She came to us with great knowledge of the game and familiarity of the players as she was previously a teacher at Yinnar Primary School in 2017.

With all 11 of Tahlia’s 9 & under players being 1st year players with very little netball knowledge, Tahlia was able to provide the little players with a basic introduction to the game and what looked to appear to be a lot of fun for these players. Each 9 & under was rewarded with a participation medal by the MDNA, as well as their very own personalised medals from the YFNC at the end of the season.

Our 11 & Under was coached by Ellen Mills this year. Ellen played all her junior netball with the YFNC, and we were very excited to have her volunteer to take on the role as a junior coach along with returning to our senior netball club as

one of our A grade players. Ellen lead our 11 & under team to their 2nd Grand final in 2 years which is quite an achievement for this young group who began playing together last year.

Unfortunately, they were unable to walk away with the win on the day, losing to the undefeated Newborough Bulldogs, but were very graceful in their loss, representing YFNC with a lot of pride and great sportsmanship.

This year we welcomed Megan Marks as our 13 & Under coach. Megan was very excited to take on the role and returned to our club after previously helping to coach our junior teams a few years back. Megan came to us with many years of experience as both a player and coach, shown in the massive development of our 13 & Under players in the 2018 season. The 13 & under team were fortunate to reach the preliminary final in which they went down by 2 points to the Newborough Bulldogs.

The end of the 2018 Winter Season see’s many of our MDNA players moving onto the MDNA Twilight competition that runs over the summer of 2018/2019. Along with the 3 teams previously entered in the 2018 Winter competition, we have enough interest in the Twilight competition to enter a 2nd 9 & Under team, which will be great for preparation and development for the 2019 winter competition.

Thank you to all families for their cooperation and support throughout the season, as well as to coaches Tahlia, Ellen & Megan for their time and commitment to our junior netballers. I would also like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to Dee Buckley for all her guidance and support in my 1st year in this role.
