A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Hi! On the off chance I haven’t subbed with your frisbee team at some point over the last six years, my name is Heather Wallace, and I love frisbee.

It’s been a busy year for our Board with lots of big successes. Most notably, we took concrete steps toward finalizing Project Callahan; in November the membership voted to merge Ultimate Parks Incorporated and OCUA into one not-for-profit organization, a major milestone in OCUA’s acquisition of the beautiful fields in Manotick. We also took major steps to address gender equity, including implementing 3:3 ratio leagues in both our summer and winter leagues, and we nearly doubled the size of our winter leagues, all while working hard to deliver against our Strategic Plan.

I have learned so much since joining the Board and assuming the role of Chair in April of 2018. Most notably, I’ve learned that nothing happens without the hard work of our Executive Director, OCUA’s dedicated staff, and our committed volunteers. From the Juniors that help us set up No Borders, to our dedicated coaches and convenors, to our innovative (and opinionated - in the best way!) league coordinators, the noble team captains, and everyone in between, I cannot thank you enough for our hard work. I am so grateful for the work you do.

I always like to say that teamwork makes the dream work, and I love the giant, diverse team that makes our organization, and our sport, so great.

Heather, Wallace Chair, OCUA

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I continue to have the pleasure and privilege of managing one of the world’s largest Ultimate associations, and I can honestly say that this organization will never cease to amaze me. We can thank Mother Nature that 2018 was a much drier year than 2017 and with some hard work from our friends at Mountainview, all of UPI was in great shape throughout the season.

The membership continues to grow with over 3,000 adult and just under 1,000 junior players; that’s right, we are back to 4,000+ members! These figures have not been recorded since 2011. Over the past few years, this growth, along with a focus on financial sustainability, has allowed OCUA to invest into new leagues and programs, such as summer social leagues, new turf fields, competitive development for youth and juniors, and new fundraiser events for OCUA’s Competitive Alliance clubs.

Two of the most exciting areas of OCUA’s membership are high school and middle school teams and grandmasters. While not close in age, both groups are growing at a rapid rate. In 2018, OCUA moved its spring and fall high school/middle tournaments to UPI to allow for more teams and within the year, both divisions have already surpasses UPI’s capacity (60 teams). Separate events will be required in 2019! Grandmasters now boast a full 6-month long indoor league, new competitive clubs, and plans to create a new Masters-Grandmasters summer tournament.

I want to thank everyone that has helped get OCUA to where it is today. The list is very long, an indication of such an engaged community. My gratitude goes out to OCUA’s partners: Andrew Morrisey, Ottawa Outlaws, BigRig Brewery, Daredevil Discs, Layout Gloves, and BE Ultimate. And I would like to especially thank OCUA’s 250+ volunteers who come out every year; that’s 6% of the membership or roughly one person per team that helps make this association and sport so great by dedicating their own time!

Get ready for an exciting 2019 as we continue to launch new programs and initiatives.
