When we reflect on the past year at Cardinal Cushing Centers, we take great pride in all that our community has accomplished. We hope you enjoy reading this year’s annual report to learn more about our good work.

In the fall of 2017, a group of Cushing staff were able to be a part of a Pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy to see the origins of our Franciscan roots. Led by Sr. Joanne Schatzlein of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, the group traced the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare. The group has been able to share their experiences with their colleagues, and use the knowledge they gained to remind us all how important our mission is.

Our dream of creating a vibrant neighborhood that includes all people is one step closer to reality as construction was completed on the Bethany Apartments, formerly the Kennedy Building. Residents began moving into their new homes in May. The building houses 33 units of affordable housing for people without disabilities, as well as 4 units for residents with disabilities. We are excited to explore partnership opportunities for our communities in the near future. Our Changing Lives – Building a Community Capital Campaign continues to make progress and we are close to reaching our goal of $10 million. To accommodate creating new parking spots, as well as install a generator for the new MarketPlace Building, we increased our goal slightly from the original $9 million. To date we have raised 90% of the project costs. We are bidding the project this fall and expect to break ground in the spring of 2019. Cushing’s new Marketplace Building will not only enhance the impact of our employment training program and provide jobs to people with intellectual disabilities, it will create opportunities for integration…where people with and without disabilities will come together in one place to shop, eat and congregate.

With your support throughout the year, our fundraising efforts reached new heights and exceeded our goals, including our annual St. Patrick’s Dinner and Auction and our Springtime Gala. We continue to both grow our established relationships with funders, as well as create new ones. Our continued growth and progress is made possible by companies like Tommy Hilfiger, who we partnered with at our Springtime Gala to showcase their new Adaptive Line. The Bruins Foundation continued their tradition of hosting a holiday party for our students and adults, and provided funding to update our fitness center.

With the support of those who make up our Cushing Community, from family members, friends, volunteers, employment partners and beyond, we will continue to provide the very best care and programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, and look forward to sharing with you all of our success stories well into the future.

With appreciation,
