Letter from the Director

Dear Friends,

Every child has the right to a happy and healthychildhood – the right to grow, play and learn in anenvironment where they are safe and protected. Andwhen safety and protection are compromised, particularlyas a result of child abuse, our society has the profoundresponsibility, to not only ensure that each child is heardand receives access to justice, but also to provide servicesto promote the child’s healing.

The Child Advocacy Center is proud to be a part of theprocess that puts the child first in an investigation forabuse. In 2018, alongside our multi-disciplinary team

partners, we served 1,619 children. We are on course, once again, to exceed prior yearnumbers. By the end of 2019, the CAC will have experienced a 45% growth in thenumber of children served since 2010.

At the CAC, investigators jointly observe child victim interviews, and have theopportunity to hear medical examination results directly from our skilled medicalproviders. Because of the team’s thoughtful deliberation, pieces of the investigationcome together more quickly. In some instances, children’s division workers must takeadditional steps to ensure that the child is not returned to a dangerous environment. And oftentimes, law enforcement officers gain valuable insight to assist in collection ofevidence, thereby increasing the odds that justice will be rendered.

Our work does not stop once the forensic interview and medical examination arecomplete. Because we also want to be part of the child’s healing process, CAC childadvocates connect the child to a Victim Center therapist located on one of our twocampuses. And thanks to the Jumpstart Grant from the O’Reilly Family Foundation andour strong alliance with The Victim Center, we will soon add another therapist inSpringfield.

We also are pleased to announce that a new partnership with Ozarks Medical CenterBehavioral Healthcare, which will provide children at our South Central CAC (WestPlains campus) better access to trauma-informed mental health services.

We work every day with the knowledge that child abuse is a hidden epidemic. In arecent meeting, the CAC board asked, “What barriers do we need to address in order toserve more children?” “How can we expand community education programs so thatadults have the knowledge and skills to identify, address and prevent childvictimization?”

We will always follow the CAC’s legacy of supporting the best interest of every childwho walks through our doors by providing a child friendly, developmentallyappropriate forensic interview and medical examination. We also commit to workrelentlessly to connect children to needed resources and to support increasing theknowledge and capacity of adults to perform their duty of protecting children.

To all of you, who have been such an important part of helping us to improve thetreatment of our children, we are so grateful for your caring and support.

May we all as an extended community strive to realize the wisdom in Nelson Mandela’swords:

There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul, than the way it treats its children.

Yours in service,

Child Advocacy Center, Director

Child Advocacy Center BoardPresident, Craig Dunn, looks downduring the Over the Edge eventfrom the Sky 11 building.

Java, the Golden Retriever, poses infront of the Child Advocacy Centerbuilding during National ChildAbuse Prevention Month. Java is theCAC’s new trained facility dog. Shesits with children during theforensic interviewing process andprovides comfort to those who visitthe CAC.

The work the CAC staff does is emotionally taxingso it is important to offer self-care. For one of ourself-care days, the staff took some time out toenjoy SWET Hot Yoga and Fitness.

Inspired by Dr. John P. Ferguson, now threegenerations of Ferguson Family members continueto be strong supporters of the Child AdvocacyCenter.
