The 2018 Rhodes State College Outstanding Alumni Award recipient was Roni L. Height, who had a prestigious career in Corporate Tax Accounting. She earned an Associate of Applied Business in Accounting from Lima Technical College in 1977, continued her education with a Bachelor of Science and Master of

Science in Accounting from the University of Houston, and became a licensed CPA. She considers her associate degree to have been “the springboard to my successful business and personal life.”

For almost forty years, Height held positions with oil and gas companies including Marathon Petroleum Company and Texaco, expanding her responsibilities and leading to significant tax savings for each company. After Texaco merged with Chevron, she was

promoted and relocated to Chevron’s corporate office in California. Her responsibilities included managing state and federal partnership income tax compliance with audits of 350+ partnerships. Since retiring in 2016, Height completed a contract merging SolarCity Corporation solar panel partnerships into the financial systems of Tesla Inc.

“My community efforts combined career and community activities,” states Height. While living in Houston, Texas, she assisted in establishing dozens of nonprofit community and charitable, tax-exempt organizations to build parks and improve neighborhoods. Upon moving to California, she assisted low-income citizens with their tax returns and served on a municipal advisory council. In 2017, the Tax Executive Institute, San Francisco Chapter honored her with its Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service.

The 2018 Outstanding Alumni Award was presented during the 48th Rhodes State College Commencement on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Veterans Memorial Civic Center in Lima.

Mary L. Marker was honored with the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Ohio Association of Community Colleges at its Annual Conference on June 8, 2018. This is the second time in three years that a Rhodes State Alum has garnered the top State alumni spot. Each of Ohio’s 23 community colleges

could submit one nominee for the award. Marker, also the 2017 Rhodes State College Outstanding Alumni Award recipient, is a member of the first Respiratory Care class of Lima Technical College, now Rhodes State College, graduating in 1980. In 2007, she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. A long-time employee of Mercy Health-St.

Rita’s, Mary is currently the Manager of Mercy Health St. Rita’s Occupational Health. She is responsible for the operations of the main office plus satellite locations. Previously, she served as Director of Cardiopulmonary Ancillary Services, overseeing the areas of Respiratory Care, Pulmonary Function, EKG Lab, Sleep Center, Audiology and EEG Lab. Demonstrating her commitment to Rhodes State College, Mary serves on the Respiratory Care Advisory Committee, 13 years as the chair, has worked with students as a clinical instructor and taught classes. She has also served as the Northwest District representative, secretary, and president of the Ohio Society for Respiratory Care. Pam Halfhill, Respiratory Care Program Director, reflects that “Mary has consistently and constantly moved into positions which have benefited many people in need of health care. She has worked tirelessly to bring new and state-of-the-art medical treatment to St. Rita’s and the Lima area community. She lives the Rhodes State College mission by becoming a life-long learner herself and bettering her community.”

Rhodes State College FoundationMissionThe Rhodes State College Foundation generates community and

financial support for Rhodes State College to assist the College in

achieving its mission.

Part of the mission of the Rhodes State College Foundation is

offering scholarships to eligible current and new students. By

fulfilling this goal, the Foundation contributes to making a quality

education more accessible and affordable.

Since 2014, the amount of scholarship dollars has increased 55%, an

increase of almost $52,000. During this same period, the number of

scholarship awards has increased 23%, and the average scholarship

award is $1,000, an increase of 26%.

These increases are due to the establishment of 17 new scholarships

and donations to established scholarship funds. Generous donors,

who believe in Rhodes State students, make all of these increases

possible. Thank you.
