2016 has been a big year for WorldShare. The Board undertook one of its most important tasks - the recruitment of a Chief Executive Officer, following the resignation of Stanley Ng Plyler. An extensive field was canvassed with professional assistance. In the end the Board was pleased to appoint one of WorldShare’s own, Joanna Mansfield.

The appointment of a new CEO is an opportunity to take stock of where we are and where we feel our Lord is leading us. Over the next few months the Board will be working with Joanna to get a fresh focus on our mission and strategy.

Our partners in the field, in the meantime, are unstoppable. This is the amazing and special part of the ministry of WorldShare. Our partners are independent and grounded in their local community. Whatever adversity they face, be it funding shortfalls or warfare, they faithfully continue in their ministry of service. This was powerfully demonstrated whilst on a trip to visit a WorldShare partner, HEAL Africa. There was a large NGO presence, clearly identifiable by the twenty-eight white Toyota LandCruisers with NGO signage which I spotted on a single trip. Less than two months after the visit, conflict broke out and all westerners evacuated, bringing the work of most of the NGOs to a halt. HEAL Africa, however, was able to continue in their ministry, at a time when they were needed the most.

God doesn’t need us, but He has chosen us to work alongside our field partners for His glory. The 2016 Annual Report lays out how our partnerships have progressed in the last financial year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our former CEO, Stanley Ng Plyler for his service, and the great team of staff and dedicated volunteers we have who work tirelessly and with great passion for our partners. Please also pray for Joanna as she takes on her role as the next CEO.

Thank you for your continued support.

In fellowship,

Gerald Thomas CHAIRMAN

CEO’s reportA few months after taking on the role of Chief Executive Officer (and stepping down as board member), it’s a good opportunity to reflect on the deeper insights I have recently gained.

The work of our partners is extraordinary

The work of our partners is extraordinary I have learnt more about the life-transforming work of our 14 trusted partners working across seven countries, and cannot do justice to their amazing work in Africa and Asia. There are many inspiring accounts of lives transformed through knowing and experiencing the love of Christ and through education, better health, women’s empowerment, and income-generating projects. Praise God for our partners on the frontline.

Our supporters are vital

I have learnt about the incredible and faithful supporters who sustain and uphold the work of WorldShare. These deep partnerships between our partners and supporters are frequently longstanding, and examples of our vision in action – Christian partnerships drawing us together across cultures and continents. To our supporters: whether your support is in the form of sharing your time, talents or treasures, we sincerely thank you. Your support is vital in bringing about spiritual, physical and social transformation.

Our challenges are significant

I have also learnt more about the challenges within WorldShare – challenges in providing sufficient financial resources for the number of projects and partners we are supporting, challenges in promoting and engaging in a large breadth of activities, and challenges in moving forward in a singular direction in the midst of a number of an array of worthwhile and valuable initiatives.

Transformation is ahead

Through the work of our passionate staff, committed Board and visionary partners, WorldShare is doing transformative work around the world. But we can do more, and we can do better. Transformation is therefore ahead for not only our partners and their communities, but also for WorldShare.

Any change brings opportunity, and the change in leadership of WorldShare is no different, bringing opportunity for reflection and renovation to ensure that WorldShare continues to transform individuals and communities overseas as effectively as possible. It is important for us as an organisation to adapt in response to a continually evolving landscape in the Australian Christian community as well as in the environments of our overseas ministry supporters.

The focus for the coming year will be on clarity and alignment – refining our identity and vision, and ensuring subsequent alignment with our organisational structure, strategy and operations. This will entail necessary investment in order to see a subsequent upturn in our income levels and support our partners even more fruitfully in the future. I am confident that God will do even greater things done through WorldShare with greater clarity and alignment.

When I look back at the history of WorldShare, I am so grateful for the way God has carried WorldShare and its partners through the years in demonstrating His love and making Himself known to people living in challenging regions around the world. There is an incredible legacy from WorldShare’s founders and supporters from which to build. I’m honoured to be in this role and it is with excitement that I look forward to being a part of WorldShare’s future. Thank you for being a part of it too!

Gratefully,

Joanna Mansfield Chief Executive Officer, WorldShare

Our Values

We aim continually to live by our guiding values, being: Christ-centred, holistic, relational and prayerful, and in our actions ‘to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with God.’

Our Vision

We envisage our world being transformed through thousands of visionary Christian partnerships, drawing us together across cultures and continents.

Our Mission

To connect our supporters with overseas partners in challenging regions by resourcing, enabling and encouraging them with their vision to bring ongoing spiritual, physical and social transformation to their own people.

A&A Ministries, Guangxi, Jilin and Yunnan China

Partners with WorldShare since 2002, Alfred and Alsie Ng of A&A Ministries serve local people in their physical, spiritual and social needs across three provinces: DuAn County in Guangxi, Yanbian in Jilin and Dali in Yunnan.

• In DuAn there are 19 pastors in the local network, serving in 43 preaching points. The number of villages reached totals over 100, a 10% increase from last year. Meng Ai preaching point in DuAn township has grown tremendously and is expected to become self-sustaining in the coming year.

• A third Sponsor A Child program with 42 students has been added to DuAn County, a total of 108 in the area.

• Pastor Lydia and assistant pastor in Jilin province continue to train pastors and coordinate the Sponsor A Child program, with 155 children supported out of a total number of 160 in the program. The two churches in Yanbian are flourishing with steady growth over the last year.

• Rice and coal were delivered to 20 poverty-stricken families over winter to alleviate cold and hunger.

• The Dali Bible School in Yunnan province continues to train students and support graduates. A new intake of 52 first-year students this year is the biggest to date. Out of the 134 students, 104 are undergraduates and 28 are completing an Advanced Diploma.

Bridge of Hope (BOH) Manado & North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Bridge of Hope (BOH) was born in response to conflict in north-eastern Indonesia in 2002. BOH works with the local poor through micro-finance loans.

• Internal productivity remains steady despite a decrease in staff numbers (down 50% over the last few years). Three branches and head office in Manado consolidated this year to improve efficiencies.

• BOH finished the year with 2,060 partner members in 181 groups, an increase of 1,788 partners in 167 loan groups from last year.

• Over 13,000 partners have been helped by BOH since its inception.

• A new chilli and ginger plant income-generating project began in June.

• A second Savings Program was introduced (with David and Suzanne Middleton as trainers) in June, which has 18 groups with 152 members in total. The program is doing very well as loan partners come to realise the importance of planning and saving.

Hohidiai Halmahera, Indonesia

Hohidiai runs a medical ministry and primary school in remote South East Asia. Local health workers provide support to displaced people following conflict in the area, a mix of Muslims and Christians.

• The Primary School offers Preparatory - Grade 6 classes and operates on base. Enrolments have grown to 150, with this year seeing inclusion of classes at Grade 6 level for the first time.

• Nearby, in the capital of Tobelo, a new school is under construction with the goal of delivering quality Christian education to local children, as well as provide an income stream to support the ministry.

• A WorldShare team travelled to serve at Hohidiai in March, providing medical, practical and school support.

• The demand for medical treatment continues to grow, but is hampered by a lack of funds with 4,259 patients seen in the first six months of the year (compared with 10,586 across 12 months in 2015).

• 13 staff undertake university or other further education in medicine, nursing, dentistry, dental nursing, midwifery, laboratory assistant and accounting.

• Hohidiai cares for 50 children on base with the majority living in five purpose-built homes and others with staff families.

• The prevalence of HIV/AIDS continues to grow often with 3-4 new patients daily. A retired architect is drawing up plans for an AIDS hospital on site.

Peking University Ministry China

WorldShare works in collaboration with SEED Institute and Peking University (PKU), a world-class university in Beijing. PKU offers the Master of Arts (Christian Studies) program through the Departments of Philosophy and Religion, with students in attendance from all over China.

• The first intensive of the new program (which was postponed for several years) began in January.

• Three-week intensive classes for 45 students were run in January, June and a third is planned for November.

• The program has recruited the best students seen in the Christian Studies program to date with 25 pastors and church leaders, six college teachers, four doctoral students and six Christian entrepreneurs, raising the calibre of the student body.

• Academic support from PKU has been strong, with the SEED Institute and PKU working in partnership together.

• The continued success of the program has seen the development of Chinese Christian textbooks, eight students undertaking doctorate studies and the expansion into two other universities.

• Since its inception in 2002, the Christian Studies program has graduated 700 students.

Universitas Kristen Immanuel Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Universitas Kristen Immanuel (UKRIM) began with its founder the late Dr Chris Marantika, an Indonesian Pastor and Evangelist. Today, it is headed by Dr Sam Handali, Rector of UKRIM. An adjunct of Faith Foundation Indonesia, UKRIM was established in 1982 as a tertiary body with a vision to offer quality university education in a Christian environment.

• 40 students are being assisted by WorldShare’s student scholarship program, an increase from 2015.

• The third English Camp was held in June, attended by 120 students and supported by a Short Term Team from WorldShare.

• WorldShare provided scholarships for three lecturers to study at Masters level.

• 104 students graduated in August 2015 with Masters, Bachelors and Diplomas. Of these students, 27 received tuition that was supported in part by WorldShare.

• The total student body increased again this year by 15% to 993, the highest level to date.

• University faculties have accreditation status from the National Accreditation Board and their annual review shows a steady improvement. Plans are underway to build new classroom facilities.

• Founder and Evangelist Dr Chris Marantika passed away in March. We are thankful that Dr Chris’ work with WorldShare affiliate Partners USA and Australia continues to leave a lasting legacy through the University.

Bangalore City Mission Bangalore, India

Established in 1990 to educate a small group of children from poor families working in the nearby stone quarries, Bangalore City Mission (BCM) and WorldShare partnered together in 2003 to deliver BCM’s vision of ‘Quarry to Classroom’. BCM continues to provide both solid education via Sinclair’s High School and practical support to local villages, offering women’s and children’s care, health education, vocational and business training.

• Handcrafts and sewn garments made by women in the vocational training program are sold successfully after construction. Further employment opportunities using these skills, such as making uniforms, are being investigated. 40 women graduated in July from the one-year training program.

• This year, the Sponsor A Child program supports 135 students, an increase from last year where 118 received sponsorship.

• Sinclair’s High School currently educates over 600 pupils to Year 10, with the best academic results in the area. Plans to extend to Year 12 are being considered.

• The building expansion project to meet government requirements for the number of students enrolled and to provide upgraded facilities at Sinclair’s High School is now 60% complete. WorldShare contributed $115,000 to the project this year, with a further $166,000 is needed to see the project through to completion.

• BCM celebrated its 25th year Silver Jubilee anniversary this year with special celebrations.

• Director Jonathan Paul and Business Manager made a Ministry Partner Visit to the eastern states of Australia in March.

Philippine Missionary Fellowship Manilla, Philippines

WorldShare works with Philippine Missionary Fellowship (PMF) in a long-standing partnership, dating back to 1979. PMF is involved in a range of activities including evangelism and church planting, community development and children’s education. The Elizabeth Academy provides education from pre-school to year six for disadvantaged children from a slum area in Quezon City, Manila.

• School enrolments totalled 251 students for this year.

• The third storey of the Elizabeth Academy on the PMF headquarters site is complete, allowing room for extra enrolments.

• Renovations to the ground floor of the main building and the addition of a second storey are underway, which will provide a community hall and Chapel facilities once completed.

• Elizabeth Academy is now self-sustainable, able to support the salaries of staff and utilities payments at PMF headquarters, co-located on the Elizabeth Academy site.

• The Sponsor A Child program grew to 112 this year, from 107 last year.

• Numbers of staff remain steady with six head office staff, eight Board Directors and 150 outreach workers and pastors serving 188 PMF churches located throughout the Philippines.

• Elizabeth Academy hosted a WorldShare Short Term Team to run a school program during September.

• The church across the Philippines continues to grow, with eight new churches planted, and 130 believers baptised.

Academic results for Sinclair’s High School students are the best amongst schools in the area.

HEAL Africa Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

HEAL Africa is based in war-torn Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where more than five million people have died in the past 20 years due to ethnic violence. HEAL Africa takes a holistic approach to restoring health and building hope for thousands of people through its medical and community programs. The programs target social, physical and economic needs including orthopaedic and fistula surgery for the victims of war and rape, Christian ministry, training for local doctors and nurses, community legal clinics and education.

• WorldShare continues to fund the training of orthopaedic officers, doctors in specialisation training, hospital residents, specialists and chaplains.

• 13 outreach clinics (up from 10 last year despite the dangers of travelling to remote areas) assisted over 700 people in orthopaedic and gynaecological surgery - an increase from 404 last year.

• HEAL Africa carried out a total of 831 fistula repairs – 353 at the hospital in Goma and 478 in outreach clinics.

• Out of the 1,587 cases of orthopaedic congenital malformations identified this year, 417 cases were corrected. Many more could be completed through additional funding.

• 150 children are currently supported through the Sponsor A Child program. New sponsorships of 30 children at Mugunga Primary School have been added to the program this year.

A letter of thanks.

Generous supporters provided John Musubao with a scholarship to study Orthopaedic Surgery. Having successfully completed his studies, John sent a letter of thanks to WorldShare and its supporters.

Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ,

My name is John Musubao. I am a recipient of scholarship support for postgraduate studies in Orthopaedic surgery (from 2012 to 2016) through WorldShare and Heal Africa hospital.

As a Medical officer at Heal Africa in the small town of Goma in Eastern Congo I always dreamed of pursuing postgraduate studies and becoming an orthopaedic surgeon. However, I was unable to fulfil my dream due to lack of financial means.

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for making my dream possible. I was thrilled to learn of my selection for this honour and I was deeply appreciative of your support in 2012. The financial assistance you provided coved my academic fees, accommodation and meal expenses for four years at Makerere University in Uganda.

Today I am pleased to let you know that I am done with the postgraduate studies and I am now an Orthopaedic surgeon. I will graduate in January 2017.

Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.

Yours sincerelyJohn Musubao

Ephphatha School for the Deaf Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Ephphatha School for the Deaf is a safe haven for over 265 students in war-torn Eastern DRC who have otherwise been rejected by society. They are educated at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

• WorldShare support provides salaries for teachers, student uniforms, school supplies and a daily meal for each student.

• A Medical Centre funded by WorldShare and the Direct Aid Program of the Commonwealth of Australia was officially opened in April. 150 deaf students accessed primary health care at the centre in its first three months.

• 17 senior students successfully completed their final year of secondary school and 12 children in primary school sat for the state exam and passed.

Morogoro Bible College Tanzania

Since 1986, WorldShare has partnered with the Anglican Diocese of Morogoro. As part of the Diocese, Morogoro Bible College (MBC) provides a three-year Diploma course to train workers for evangelism and to pastor rural churches. Bearing witness to Christ with a spirit of love, compassion, humility, respect and diversity as its core values, the Diocese is a well-respected part of the local community.

• Over the year, much of Tanzania has been plagued by drought and subsequent famine. This increases the cost of food and makes it difficult for students to subsidise their fees.

• College enrolment was 33 students (down from 41 in the previous year).

• MBC continues to pray for funds to build the Phillipa Memorial Hostel, a block of flats, which will enable the college to be self-fund approximately 90% of its costs.

• An Intensive English Course for students who wish to improve their English was introduced through the year.

Christian Fellowship Ministries Uganda

Christian Fellowship Ministries (CFM) was founded with the aim of reaching Uganda for Christ through evangelism, church planting, orphan care, leadership training and a micro-finance program to empower their people to be self-sufficient.

• The Multi-purpose hall was put to good use for weddings, conferences and workshops and the Resource Centre has reached beam level in its construction.

• A WorldShare Short Term Team ran mobile clinics with local doctors and healthcare workers in three rural villages where churches have been planted through the work of CFM.

• Six outreach missions were held, bringing hundreds of souls to Christ.

• Five Village Savings & Loans Associations commenced, which teach and encourage people to save.

• Through WorldShare’s Sponsor A Child program, 257 orphaned children continue to be supported.

Wakisa Ministries Uganda

Wakisa is a ministry of love, compassion and mercy to vulnerable young women providing pregnancy care, counselling, temporary shelter and training in vocational skills.

• Throughout 2016, 113 young women were received at Wakisa and provided with temporary shelter and counselling, up from to 109 in the previous year.

• Every young woman in residence is equipped with a vocational skill during her stay, including cooking, candle making, tailoring, urban agriculture, gardening, craft and infant care.

• Wakisa celebrated 10 years of ministry, marking the occasion with a celebration attended by past and present staff, young women whose lives have been transformed by Wakisa and a WorldShare Short Term Team visiting from Australia.

• 20 young women returned to school, nine of these sponsored by WorldShare’s Education Sponsorship Program. This was up by two from the previous year.

• Stage 1 funds were raised by WorldShare supporters to build a Birthing Centre at Wakisa, which provides a network of services and a warm, caring environment for expectant mothers to deliver their babies safely.

Myanmar FloodingIn July 2015 Cyclone Komen in Bangladesh resulted in floods that affected more than 210,000 people across western Myanmar. Homes and fields were destroyed in remote villages, leaving thousands homeless in four regions and desperately in need of shelter, food and clean water.

WorldShare Ministry Partner Rev Cha and his wife Susan (Grace Haven Ministries, Myanmar) immediately responded, sending a response team with emergency supplies to the flooded areas of Mogok and Rakine where the Rohinjia people live.

Practical support is now provided through ‘Student Centres’, established and run by local ministry partners where students can live-in near their high school or university. Without such a live-in centre, many poor students would not be able to continue their education.

Local partners delivered supplies such as clean water, rice, dry goods, and building material to the affected villages in Myanmar. The goods were able to be generously provided through WorldShare supporters in Australia.

sponsor a childThe Sponsor A Child program has enabled many children to progress through local community-based education programs. Through the program, over 1,300 children across five countries received education and essential health care. This financial year, more than 50 children graduated from primary school, more than 20 from high school and a further 12 will continue at university-level study. These results highlight the success of ongoing initiatives to improve communication and engagement between Worldshare ministry partners and children.

This year, 143 new children were welcomed into the Sponsorship program across all overseas ministry partners. This was buoyed by outreach activities of our China and Bangalore partners, with successful visits to Australia helping to contribute 66 new Sponsorship connections.

The program is delighted to have observed groups of younger supporters within the millennial age group initiate fundraising activities this year in support of their brothers and sisters overseas.

398 of these children are currently waiting for sponsors. To transform the life of a child, their family and their community today, please call 02 9712 8222 or email [email protected]

short term teamsThe mission at WorldShare is to connect people to transform lives, and a compelling way to do this is by participating in Short Term Teams. WorldShare sends teams to assist with on the ground efforts of WorldShare ministry partners. Short Term Teams are field-driven, travelling in response to partner invitations.

Short Term Teams work alongside our partners to help transform their communities. Teams are trained and equipped so they can meet ministry needs whilst overseas.

Once team members return home, they naturally become advocates for the ministry partner because they have seen first-hand the needs of the communities. Incorporating these transformational experiences into their lives and communicating the needs of the ministry brings a new perspective for both parties: the communities see the love of Jesus in action, and team members can be a demonstration of Jesus’ love for others.

This financial year WorldShare ministry partners hosted five Short Term Teams:

We warmly invite you to join us in a team in 2017.

PHILIPPINES

September 2015: a team travelled to Manila, Philippines to serve amongst 250 children for a week as part of the school holiday program at Elizabeth Academy.

UGANDA

ministry partner visits legacies

HohidiaiPeter and Esther visited Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania and regional areas in October 2015 to share the work of Hohidiai and discuss the growing problem of HIV/AIDS in the area. With current facilities at capacity, development is required to care for the increasing number of patients.

During their Ministry Partner Visit, Peter and Esther were able to reconnect with friends and supporters as well as build new relationships with both individuals and churches.

WorldShare invited three of its ministry partners to Australia this year, to spend time connecting with supporters and sharing about the work in their home countries.

My wife and I have reached that time of life when our children are grown and we are in need of rewriting our wills that are many years out of date. We resolve to share what God has given us so generously for His Kingdom - after we have gone - as well as for the work to do today.

Like so many reading this, I long to see lives transformed. Through the wonderful ministries of our partners around the world, I am inspired to see God’s children given the chance to hear the Good News, to receive education and see families break out of cycles of poverty and despair.

To know that these good works can continue through my bequest long after I am gone is an encouragement and a source of thanksgiving to God. It really is an investment in eternity!

We also praise God for the generosity and vision of our trusted supporters, with bequests totalling $33,871.38 gratefully received by WorldShare this financial year.

Seeing the impact of contributing to our partner’s ministries to bring gospel-centred transformation to the lives of others is a continual source of encouragement. Please consider leaving a bequest to continue the good works through the work of WorldShare Ministry Partners.

A&A MinistriesIn April 2016, WorldShare partners Alfred and Alsie Ng visited Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, regional NSW and Victoria before visiting Canada and the US. Alfred and Alsie’s itinerary reflect the value of relationships and raising prayer support to sustain this vital ministry partnership to China. New doors were opened, new friendships established and plenty of opportunities were provided to encourage existing faithful ministry supporters.

Alfred and Alsie shared their passion for training and sending pastors among the Yao and Zhuang peoples of Duan. The vision is to continue growing and strengthening the 44 churches/preaching points which have been established, including the training and equipping of the outreach workforce of 50 workers. During this year’s visit, Alfred and Alsie were able to promote the expansion of the Sponsor A Child program in DiSu with 42 newly sponsored children added to the program.

Bangalore City MissionJonathan Sinclair Paul, Executive Director and Satish Kumar, Business Manager of Bangalore City Mission (BCM) visited Australia in May. Over several weeks, Jonathan and Satish shared the vision of BCM across Queensland, NSW and Victoria, speaking at local churches, conducting a radio interview with SBS and attending a business luncheon in Sydney.

BCM continues to face many challenges, the most pressing is the need to expand Sinclair’s High school, currently at capacity. An extension to the current building is under construction, and on its completion will retain 250 children in school and help families to escape poverty long-term. Further funding is required to complete the building project. During Jonathan and Satish’s visit, 24 additional children were sponsored through the Sponsor A Child Program.

Remember WorldShare in your willLeaving a legacy to WorldShare in your Will provides critical financial support to help our Christian Ministry Partners over the longer term.

However large or small, your legacy will help share the good news of Jesus and support the transformation of individuals and communities through locally-led development by helping children, empowering women and providing health and education.
