MARSHFIELD AREA YMCA
LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Throughout Wisconsin, countless people know the YMCA. But there’s so much more to the Y
than one might think. From exercise to education, from volleyball to volunteering, from
preschool to preventive health, the Y doesn’t just strengthen our bodies – we strengthen
community. We’re a cause, dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social
responsibility.
We’ve been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow, and thrive. Yet we’re called to do so
much more. Our region faces new challenges that create a greater need than ever for the
work we do every day. Fortunately, where some see obstacles, we see opportunities to make
a difference.
For 30 years, our Y has been here:
Developing and delivering programs that emphasize prevention and a proactive
commitment to healthy living.
Partnering with educators and parents to support learning, health and well-being
long after school hours.
Serving as a gathering place for individuals of all backgrounds to come together on
common ground.
The Marshfield Area YMCA is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident,
connected, and secure children, adults, families, and communities. Every day our impact is
felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child, and when our
community comes together for the common good.
In reviewing the 2016 Annual Report, you will read about many of our accomplishments but
more importantly you will read about stories of impact. As we move beyond 2016, we will
focus on collaboration, developing quality youth programs, strengthening our roots in the
community, continuing with facility and equipment upgrades, and building on our YMCA’s
legacy.
Today, the Y is at a tipping point of making true, community-wide change. It is our
volunteers, donors, staff and supporters who have made this progress possible. And it is the
volunteers and staff, working together, who will drive the Y and the communities we serve
forward.
We are thankful for the many volunteers, donors, and members whose commitment to our
mission is so critical to our continuing success.
Sincerely,
Bill Sennholz John Nystrom

Moving back to Marshfield almost a year ago I am so thankful for the opportunities the YMCA has given us over the past year.
Working full time and being a single mom, I am so grateful to know that my daughter is in a safe environment with friends and wonderful caregivers. The YMCA allows me and my daughter an enjoyable, friendly place to work out and spend time together, as well as a safe, enriching environment for my daughter while I work.

OUR IMPACT:
We are committed to helping people live longer, healthier lives. With a mission
centered on balance, we bring families closer together, encourage good health, and
foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. $177,466 in
direct assistance was provided to children, adults, and families to allow them to
afford their Y membership and wellness programs. 10,366 children, adults, and
seniors were active and engaged members and program participants at our YMCA
through personal fitness activities and wellness classes.
of our members are able to belong as a result of our community giving and financial assistance program.
Anita, age 70, was treated last year for cancer. At the end of her chemotherapy she was
introduced to the Y’s Stepping Away from Cancer Membership, which brought Anita and
her husband to the YMCA.
Always an active person, particularly gardening, Anita was exhausted and sick last spring
and summer. On top of the physical challenges, she had emotional challenges as well with
the death of her sister from cancer and the care of her 95 year old mother in Appleton.
Anita started at the Y in the fall and worked with one of our
wellness coaches, who introduced her to the fitness equipment –
what to do and what not to do. She said that it is true that when
exhausted – a little bit of exercise really helps with the fatigue as
well as being careful not to do too much.
Anita appreciated that her husband is allowed to be a part of this
program also. Initially, they just planned on him driving her to the
YMCA, but he joined the Y with her and they are thrilled with the
unexpected benefit of him getting exercise through swimming.
In closing Anita said, “the Y has been very good to us!”

OUR IMPACT:
We believe in giving back to our neighbors. For 30 years, our Y has been developing
skills and emotional well-being through welcoming all people and building a healthier
community through collaborations. We provided in-kind support valued at $37,185 to
34 community-based organizations through facility usage, access to training,
partnership and free programs open to the entire community.
Thanks so much to all the generous donors who supported the 2016 Annual Campaign. Our goal was to raise $135,000 for children, families, individuals and older adults who need us most.
We exceeded that goal and in total raised over $160,000 which will make a huge difference - right here in our community.
THANK YOU! Irv & Nancy Johnson - 2016 Annual Campaign Chairs
Thank you for the use of the YMCA for swimming and powerlifting practices. You really do not know how much this means to the athletes of Special Olympics.
We had a great run at the summer state games this year. Our swim team competed in four events receiving two bronze medals and two 4th place ribbons. The powerlifting team had a little better success. The five athletes competed in 14 events. The results were seven gold medals, two silver medals, four bronze medals and one 4th place ribbon. This was way better then I thought they would do when we started practicing in November.
Thank You again as this would not have been possible without the use of your facility.
of the people who want to participate in YMCA programs are able to do so, regardless of their ability to pay.

OUR MISSION
The Marshfield Area YMCA’s mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build
healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
OUR CAUSE
TO STRENGTHEN THE
FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNITY
CHANGING LIVES. BUILDING FUTURES. The Marshfield Area YMCA is dedicated to improving the physical, emotional and spiritual health of residents in Wood, Marathon and Clark counties. Our current facility is worn, outdated and too small to allow us to serve the growing numbers of people who wish to participate in our programs. The improvements made possible by our capital campaign will help us to serve more children and youth through: new childcare facilities including 12 classrooms, kitchen and outdoor playground; and a new School Age Center for youth with homework help and recreation opportunities. A new fieldhouse will provide facilities for indoor court/field sports and a running track, greatly expanding opportunities for team sports and sporting events. More people will be able to achieve a healthy lifestyle through increasing the Healthy Living Center space (with 24/7 access), new wellness coaching/consultation areas, exercise rooms, fitness testing room, additional cardio and free weight equipment. New social gathering areas will encourage conversation and social bonding. Studies have shown that strong social ties can have a direct and positive impact on health and contribute to the prevention of chronic disease. These gathering areas are especially important for seniors and families alike. Through partnerships, more people in our community will have access to a full range of opportunities to improve their quality of life. This includes a significant partnership with the Marshfield Clinic Health System. Currently our two organizations collaborate on: rehabilitation memberships; a program promoting an active lifestyle during and after cancer diagnosis; and an afterschool program focusing on physical activity and healthy eating. The Marshfield Clinic’s Center For Community Outreach Youth Net program will now be housed at the Y and other collaborative programs will be developed. Wood County Headstart will provide programming for 106 children, birth through 4 years old. The Marshfield School District will also relocate its Alternative High School to the new YMCA facility, offering high school education opportunities for 30 children who thrive in a non-traditional school environment.
