Thank you presents (flowers, personal crossword puzzle, and envelopes) were presented to Julie Herndon – Music Director – by Diane Hardy and Polly Smith representing the choir.

A quorum was established by Tim Booher, Clerk.

Hal Leach moved to approve the 2015-2016 Congregational Meeting Minutes. Judy Leach seconded and the 2015-2016 Congregational Meeting Minutes were approved unanimously. There were no questions. Bob Hardy thanked Karol Mead for the good job in preparing the minutes.

Betty McCabe presented the 2016-2017 Budget and Financial report: Betty thanked Lynda Manstrom, Linda Johnson (LJ) and Janet Apostolo for all their work and assistance. Betty thanked Hal Leach who is the outgoing Chair and long-time member of the Finance Committee for his service. She also thanked Michael Schmahl, Karen Connolly, Reverend Gail and Gary Dowell for all their work in preparing the budget and finances for next year. Income: Betty McCabe thanked the DCC members for their generosity. She said the church met their stewardship goals for the upcoming year’s budget. Betty reported the 2016/2017 commitments came in at $340,000 and the expected plate income is $17,000. The total budgeted income is $796,000 for the year. Expenses: Building and Grounds expenses exceeded the 2015/2016 budget but since the Budget Committee had budgeted for two full time ministers, which the church did not have for the full year, and building usage income came in above budget for the year, DCC came in $17,000 below budget for the year as a whole. The total budget for this past year was $814,000 and the actual balance came in as $797,000. The big difference in expenses for last year was in salaries and benefits. Other differences were from (1) Building and Grounds coming in over budget. Building and Grounds major expenses were for tree removal and a new commercial dishwasher in Koinonia Hall. The (2) Sanitation District reported that a bill wasn’t paid during the construction of the Hope Center building for $7,300 and the church set that money aside if it has to be paid. The (3) property taxes went up and other small differences. Last year’s expenses still came in under the projected total budget by $59,000. Betty stated this year’s 2016/2017 budget for income and expenses ($814,912) match. There were no questions. A motion to approve the budget was made by Michael Schmahl. The motion was seconded by Dee Brook. The motion passed unanimously.

Bruce Hixon (Chair) presented a report for the Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund consists of funds donated by members during their lifetime or from their estate after they die. This is an enhanced way of giving and donors get a write off on their taxes. The principal funds are not to be used, only income from the fund’s investments is used for grants. Grant requests submitted in 2015/2016 were for organ maintenance, lighting, blinds for Koinonia Hall, music, and Sister Parish. Bruce thanked the members Penny Atkin, Dee Brook, Carol Krotz, and Bob Kovach for their service during the year.

Associate Minister Report by Rev. Eric Sherlock: Rev. Eric reported that since he started in August, 2015 there have been challenges and unforgettable joys. Highlights in the coming year include over 40 children have signed up for vacation bible camp, ¾ from the local community. This is a great way to open the church doors to the community. There are 15 adult volunteers who have been planning for 2

months. Next summer there are plans for a youth 2017 mission trip. Over the next year the youth will be focusing on service learning work with organizations like the Rainbow Center - Shelter Inc. - and partnering with Sierra Service Project that works with low income communities. Rev. Eric will be starting a new OWL (Our Whole Lives) program which is a sexuality program open to the community. Rev. Eric said he is asking the local schools if they want to participate in the program. Rev. Eric said he will also be working with Rev. Gail and a transition team to call a new senior pastor. He stated he is grateful to be here and looking forward to next year.

Interim Senior Minster Report by Reverend Gail Doering: Bob Hardy introduced Rev. Gail and mentioned she has been at DCC for 6 months with high energy and has been connecting with everyone in the congregation. Rev. Gail expressed her gratitude for the staff and being at DCC. She has been touched by her welcome. She stated she is faced with the task of moving forward to envision a new future that brings the essence and unique gifts of DCC’s rich past, and the historic foundations of the denominational values of the UCC, to life. When working with the pastoral search group they have the job of representing the entire congregation but when the search process starts it becomes less transparent. She wants to open all doors and windows when beginning work on the transition and discovery before the committee begins their work. The Transition and Discovery Committee consists of Bob Hardy, Betsy Hosick, Cheryl Pierson. Reverend Eric Sherlock, David Fetherstonhaugh, Dee Brook, and Rev. Gail. This committee will prepare information for the ultimate search committee. The meeting attendees were asked to complete a project – question exercise: 1. What is one ministry you are passionate about? 2. What is the longing you have for this community? 3. What is one very specific and concrete action or step or financial contribution or service that you would add to make #2 happen or come closer to becoming a reality here at DCC. There is another retreat weekend planned at Camp Caz for families on the September 30th weekend. There were no further questions for Rev. Gail. Those present were asked to think about the young man who broke his neck in a pool accident the night before he was to graduate from high school and the Florida tragedy. There was a moment of silent prayer.

Moderator Report given by Bob Hardy:

Bob stated he wants to share his appreciation of being moderator this last year. He wanted to talk about the fact there were some tumultuous times and how being the moderator changed over the year. After three or four weeks Anton resigned and it was important to regroup. The mission of the moderator was to set some leadership goals, 1) to ignite the flame for a common cause to establish trust, 2) provide stable leadership and services while hiring and installing new Associate and Interim Ministers, and 3) to keep the worship services and ministry together and to support the diaconate and council relationship and understanding. Bob shared a visual diagram about how the various parts of the church work together. Going forward with a 1) Transition and Discovery team to inform and help the senior pastoral search committee, 2) provide reconciliation and release past losses and changes, 3) streamline DCC structure to bring most joy and fulfillment to the committee leaders and members.

INTERIM SENIOR MINISTER Whatever you are doing, that which makes you feel the most alive...that is where God is.

~Ignatius of Loyola

The one thing that has been constant in this last year is change, or at least transition. I suppose that is to be expected in the interim period. Some of us find the fluidity and chaos energizing and invigorating, and others find it terrifying and unsettling. Amid the changes, one thing that has not changed is that you still have an INTERIM senior minister. This too shall pass. But for now, let’s take a moment to consider the year that has passed.

St. Ignatius of Loyola employed a spiritual practice with his monastic order which was known as the Prayer of Examen. This prayer invites the prayer to recall a past period of time and to ask the questions “When was I most aware of God’s presence?” and “When did God feel distant or absent?” Another less theocentric way to ask is simply to count highs and lows, desolation and consolation or moments that are life giving vs. life draining. So, I would like to share my prayer of examen regarding this past year at DCC, but also, invite you to spend some time on your own before the Annual Meeting, doing your own practice of this prayer.

When was I most aware of God’s presence? (not in chronological order) The hiring of John Kendall Bailey as our new music director as well as the loving send-off for Julie Herndon to her doctoral program at Stanford, the installation (long overdue) of Reverend Eric as your Associate Minister, youth leadership in the Maundy Thursday worship, integration of worship and music during the Roll Down, Justice series in Lent, almost every day I arrive at work and am greeted by Jennifer, Lynda, Eric and sometimes Otto (Eric’s sweet dog!), launching the Discovery Team and engaging in the process, Carniglia memorial service, many pastoral visits and conversations, launching Theology Pubs and the ongoing monthly connections led by Reverend Eric, adults attending Holy Moly class one summer Sunday, generous giving and service to mission and ministry, kudos for our efforts at welcoming people to worship, Melissa Tumaneng’s Ecclesicastical Council and Ordination, Camp Caz weekend, the Christmas Pageant, Commissioning a Sister Parish delegation, anytime people step up to serve out of their generosity and giftedness.

When did I feel that God was distant or absent? November 8/9, 2016 (sorry, I have to be honest about that), when my own human frailties and limitations show up, the moving away or death of integral parts of the church family, numeric decline, matters of disagreement or dissent that veer us from the essential and central mission of the church, talk that emphasizes scarcity rather than abundance, church matters and conversations that divorce themselves from the spiritual. These are decidedly more vague for obvious reasons.

Ignatius then closes the prayer with gratitude to God for all that is and all that has been revealed. In that pattern, I am grateful for all of you, for the staff, for the opportunities we have to make a difference in our lives, in the lives of others and to discern how we might practice and live out our faith in the world in which we live. None of this is easy and it does not always make sense. Sometimes we bump up against each other and disagree vigorously, but in the end, we are guided by love and held mysteriously by a Spirit that gives us a peace beyond our own understanding. In the words of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Let us work as if success depended upon ourselves alone, but with heartfelt conviction that we are doing nothing, and God everything. Peace and grace, Reverend Gail

ASSOCIATE MINISTER It is with great enthusiasm that I write my second annual report as I conclude another year of ministry as DCC’s Associate Pastor! This has been another exciting year with the Spirit’s guidance. Below are a few highlights that I would like to capture: Youth Ministries Our church’s Youth Group experienced a wonderful year of connection, service, and learning. We kicked-off the program with a Pool Party at one of our family’s homes where we welcomed youth back from summer. Youth Group met throughout the year on Sunday evenings from 6-8:00PM in the Youth Room. During this time, youth shared in fellowship, food, conversation, and fun! For the 2016-17 year, our program expanded to 25 active youth in grades 6-12. Outside of time spent in community on Sunday evenings, youth engaged in several service projects with Glide Memorial Church as well as Sacred Space East Bay; led worship on Christmas Eve and Maundy Thursday; and hosted 4 fundraisers to prepare for their mission trip this summer with Sierra Service Project. This summer, July 9-15, 15 youth and 4 adults will travel to San Diego for a week-long trip to engage in home renovation and repair. Children’s Ministries Every summer our children’s ministries kicks-off with Vacation Bible Camp. For the summer of 2016, we welcomed 37 children and 15 adult volunteers to Vacation Bible Camp, where we explored and learned about God’s amazing love. Following camp, the Children’s Ministries Commission entered a time of discernment around VBC. Specifically, we asked questions about the purpose for camp and whether we were responding to the needs of our community. After much discussion, prayer and research, the Children’s Commission elected to go forward with a new summer program for the summer of 2017 – Peace Village Camp. Peace Village Camp is an interfaith program that teaches children and youth real skills in peacemaking. Under the leadership of skilled teachers and trained leaders, villagers learn about peaceful conflict resolution, empathy, creating inner peace, connecting with the natural world, media literacy, yoga, art, music, and more. We are excited about this opportunity and look forward to welcoming the over 45 children and youth registered for camp along with the 21 adult volunteers! Children continue to share in worship with the congregation on the first Sundays of the month for “Family Worship.” Godly Play continues to be the centerpiece of our children’s programs on Sunday mornings and our new Holy Moly class for children in grades 3-5, has been warmly received by children and families. Worship I continue to play a strong role in worship leadership in partnership with my beloved colleagues, Rev. Gail Doering and John Kendall Bailey. This year we explored various themes in worship, including: Building Community (summer 2016), Be the Church (fall 2016), and Roll Down, Justice! (Lent 2017). Our music program has been enriched this year by the leadership of our new music director, John Kendall Bailey, and we have witnessed an uptick in visitor attendance and retention. I have enjoyed the opportunity to preach more as well as the congregation’s willingness to incorporate new worship practices on Sunday mornings.

Lastly, I was honored to preside over a baptism, welcome new members, as well as officiate the memorial services of some of the great saints of our church who we lost this past year: Bob Wilkens, Bruce Blaire, and Gary Dowell. Congregational Life The 2016-17 program year was another year of transition for the congregation where we entered a “Discovery” process. In the fall of 2016, a Discovery Team was formed and elected by Council, and I had the great joy of serving on the team. The 9-month process consisted of interviewing members of DCC, 3-workshops with the congregation, and a share back with Council. This was an incredibly rich process where I learned about the congregation’s identity, as well as hopes and joys for the future. In September, Theology on Tap was launched – a monthly gathering where folks come together to discuss various topics at a local Danville restaurant. This program was well received and we saw a range of 3-18 people gather together any given month. This year, some of the topics discussed included: wisdom of our elders, wisdom of millennials, the 2016 Election, Israel/Palestine, Lent 101, and the meaning of Easter. This summer, Theology on Tap will continue, but we will gather at the Felton’s for a potluck style Theology on Tap! In October, I enjoyed another retreat with the congregation to Camp Caz for “Family Camp.” It was encouraging to see over 50 people from DCC gather for a weekend of fellowship, fun and worship. In March, I traveled with the Sister Parish delegation to San Antonio Cunen, Guatemala. It was a privilege to witness the amazing ministry that is Sister Parish and to support the Sister Parish team in continuing this relationship between the people of San Antonio and DCC. Finally, I am continually amazed by the care and concern of our members, particularly those on the Diaconate, who shepherd and follow-up with our shut-ins and those in need of care. Concluding Thoughts Beloved, this has been an exciting year for ministry at DCC. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as one of your pastors alongside Rev. Gail, our staff, our elected officers, and the incredible lay leadership we have been blessed with. I look forward to the future and I am confident that God is not done with us yet – that there will be more than enough blessings to give and receive! With gratitude and faith,

MODERATOR Wow, what a year it’s been for DCC! At the start of the church year in June of 2016, our Senior Interim Minister, Rev. Gail, had been at the helm along with Rev. Eric for almost five months. In that time, there was much learning and working together to support the many facets of our beloved community. The work of sharing ideas, cohesiveness, leadership and worship planning has carried us as a community to a new and exciting point in our journey together.

My goals for service as Moderator to support the church community included what I hoped would be a cohesiveness and camaraderie through the organization. This idea was fulfilled due the great work of our two ministers and the amazing leadership of our church officers, commissioners and leaders, keeping the church focused on moving forward with optimism and faith.

During this church year, we have experienced a peace, joy and stability for worship and offerings. We had many high points, alongside great worship experiences, like social events, new music, youth missions and the day in August that Rev. Eric was officially installed as our Associate Pastor. Through the work of the music search team and more prayer, we were blessed to have John Kendall Bailey come into our congregation with great enthusiasm, unique experience and talent to help lead our worship services and guide our choir into new musical challenges. The music program will only grow in better ways to spark our prayer work in song.

The focus of the “Discovery Team,” led by David Fetherstonhaugh, gathered information about what it is that keeps the light shining for DCC in meaningful ways. The mission of the Discovery team supports a more focused intention of who we are and what is most important to us as a community. In an effort to not only help clarify our own future priorities but serve to call a new Senior pastor that resonates with our mission and many diverse core needs.

The Discovery process started by interviewing individuals, then hosting bigger workshops the first part of this year. The results and discoveries of the work were presented to the DCC council on May 16. The Discovery process itself will keep growing in interesting ways as we welcome input from new people that come to worship at DCC.

The Pastor Search team and those that wanted to be a part of it, gained energy and interest after February. Through the selection of committees and approval by the council, the search team will be voted in by the Congregation on June 11, to start work directly thereafter.

With all the dedicated committee work behind the scenes, the Faith Journeys commission had many offerings over the year which were lively and enriching. The trip to Guatemala by our DCC Sister Parish team was successful and their shared experience deeply moving. Outreach created many opportunities to participate, serve and contribute to the community outside our doors. The Church Family Commission created fun social events, while our financial wizards, Buildings and Grounds crew, Worship Commission, Membership, Children and Youth programs all realized great contribution and growth.

Thank you to all those that participated and gave of their time, talent and treasure keeping the light shining for DCC, a beacon where we work together to bring peace and hope to the world we live in.

It has been a privilege working with the DCC leadership, clergy and congregation to fulfill our goals and dreams. In prayer and faith, all is well and all will be well.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of service. Bob Hardy Moderator

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DIACONATE

Deacons at DCC meet monthly with the ministers, and are charged by the Church By-Laws to “aid and advise the ministers and the Council, stand with and listen to persons in the congregation and provide special ministries of reconciliation, comfort, and inspiration.” Ministries of the Diaconate include:

• A ministry of presence. In cooperation with our ministers, we call this ‘being there’ for members – with home visits, prayer team participation, recognition of special acts of kindness,

• Planning and coordinating memorial services, and maintaining and disbursing a growing number of memorial funds - money given in memory,

• Assisting in planning and coordinating weddings and receptions, • Coordinating with the Prayer Shawl Ministry to deliver shawls and baby blankets and maintain

records, • Identifying and acknowledging members of the congregation who have gone above and

beyond for DCC, sending cards each month, • Keeping connected to, and serving our students who are ‘in care,’ or in college, • Monitoring, and maintaining the DCC active member list, and reaching out to members who

have been absent for a while, • Supporting our ministers by serving communion at DCC or in member homes, helping with

Services of Godspeed, Baptisms, and other events. Diaconate members meet monthly with the minister(s). The By-laws indicate: “Deacons are appointed by Council for a one-year term and are eligible for three consecutive years. Persons are eligible for reappointment after a year’s absence from the Diaconate.”… “Life Deacons are elected by the congregation after being nominated by the Diaconate and reviewed by Council.” In 2016-17, Diaconate members include Life Deacons Peggy Gierke and Nancy Hill. Continuing Deacons, and Deacons appointed by Church Council for the year are Karen Kawaguchi, Donna Lenhardt, Mary Kay McClure, Bette Felton, Judi Weisgraber, Dee Brook, Carol Gerich, Anne Seiler, and Richard Stein. Judi Weisgraber and Donna Lenhardt took leaves during the year and were replaced by Diane Stein and Larry Berlin. The Diaconate also appreciates the energy and expertise of Karen Kawaguchi, who has completed her term of service as a Deacon. Each year new deacons are appointed by Council to replace those leaving service. For the year 2017-18, Janis Jang was approved as a new Deacon and Diane Stein and Larry Berlin were approved as continuing Deacons. We look forward to Janis joining this ministry in the year ahead. Bette Felton For the Diaconate

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DAYSPRING PRESCHOOL BOARD In June 2017, Dayspring Preschool (DSPS) completes its seventh school year serving the families of the Tri-Valley area and beyond. The school continues to thrive under the leadership of its Director, Janice Inman, and a high-quality teaching staff. We can be proud that Dayspring is recognized as one of the top preschools in the area attracting families in and around Danville, as well as from areas as far away as Livermore, Tracy, San Leandro, and Oakland. This year we report on our performance relative to our FY17 Objectives in four categories: Safety, Compliance and Facility Objectives

• Zero reportable incidents; 100% Licensing compliance • Improve parking lot nighttime lighting • Successful Disaster Recovery communications backup simulation • Replace children’s toilets and other major maintenance

We are pleased to report achievement of all these objectives. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Buildings and Grounds team, particularly Brett Clark and John Bassett, for the lighting improvements. We remind DCC members that the Kairos kitchen must be kept peanut free – thank you! Financial Objectives

• Maintain $50K operating reserve and 1-mo operating expense available for preschool operations.

• Maintain Resource Improvement, Staff Retention & Dev, Scholarship Fund • $350K Allocation to DCC. • Stretch goal: $25K allocation to Endowment Note Principal Fund.

We are pleased to report achievement of all these objectives. This report is submitted before year-end financials are available, however with the caveat that May financials are estimated, our estimated results are: Total Enrollment is down about 8% (in part due to competition from the Transitional Kindergarten program in the SRVUSD public school district, which offers Pre-K at no cost to parents; see below for more discussion on competitiveness / differentiation). Revenue is accordingly down about 5%. However, costs were reduced to offset most of that, keeping our Net Operating Income (before Allocations to DCC and Funds) within about $20K of FY16. For FY18 we are adding an Objective to maintain or improve on FY17 Enrollment (FTE) and Net Operating Income. Our balance sheet is strong, with >1 month of operating cash plus a $50K reserve, as well as reserves for Resource Improvement (to cover future capital improvements) and Teacher Development and Retention (to fund teacher training programs and other development opportunities). Talent Retention and Development

• <20% staff annual turnover • Provide 3 in-service trainings • Allocate $5K for teacher merit bonuses and >4% average pay increase for teachers • Focus on maintain staff as a “team unit” • Board to exit interview and provide feedback; summer in-service participation

We achieved all these goals with the exception that our staff turnover was 25% (3/12, exceeding our 20% target) with reasons cited being major life changes (e.g. moving), teaching position in an elementary school, and teaching position at another preschool. One factor is that Transitional Kindergarten program creates higher demand for elementary-school credentialed teachers, and generally offers higher salaries and benefits packages. Our Director has aimed to keep Dayspring a differentiated workplace by focusing on staff

18

development (providing at least 3 in-service trainings per year), and by creating a team-based atmosphere via joint planning sessions and curriculum development, collaborative team activities. The school’s financial performance allowed for merit bonuses and meeting target averages for raises. The Board has also committed to helping the Director get feedback by performing an exit interview with any departing staff member, and to improve the sense of community with our teachers by attending a portion of the Summer in-service day. Competitiveness & Differentiation

• Compatibility of Learning Objectives with SRVUSD Kindergarten/Common Core goals • Integrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) enrichment

program into curriculum • <4% Year-on-Year tuition increase • Maintain Prayer Shawl ministry; Sacred Stories; >4 Friend of Dayspring and other DCC

“connection” events We are pleased to report achievement of all these objectives. Our teacher lesson plans are tied to Common Core standards, and our Director has implemented an enrichment program for STEAM that is a clear differentiator with Transitional Kindergarten. Friends of Dayspring (led by Nancy Dowell, Judy Halden and Dave Halseth) continues to be a major differentiator for parents, teachers and students alike, by holding teacher appreciation events, assisting with Art Show and helping with other events. Our connection to DCC this year included continued support from the Prayer Shawl Ministry for new Dayspring babies, support from Pastor Eric for Sacred Stories, co-participation of DCC and DSPS with the Sing Along and Art Show, and coordination of DCC’s Peace Village Camp with DSPS’s session break in June.

In closing, the Dayspring Board would like to thank the many ‘Friends of Dayspring’ volunteers for your support throughout the year, and the Buildings and Grounds team (especially Brett Clark and John Bassett) for the many hours devoted to helping maintain our facilities! We are inspired by your commitment to this ministry. Your support also helps differentiate Dayspring as a special place for students to learn, for teachers to work and pursue their passion to make a difference in students’ lives, and inspire confidence and a sense of community from our Dayspring parents. We also thank Pastor Eric for his quarterly participation in our Board Meetings and support of Sacred Stories.

Respectfully submitted by the Dayspring Board:

Charlie Hasselbrink (Chair), Janet Apostolo (Treasurer), Anne Seiler (Secretary), Nancy Dowell (Friends of Dayspring Chair), Judy Halden (Buildings and Grounds / Council Liaison). Dave Halseth (Building and Grounds / Council Liaison) and Janice Inman (Director).

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMISSION Buildings and Grounds (B&G) accomplishments last year and planned for this year fall into three categories:

1. Long Term Maintenance (LTM) 2. “Green” 3. Maintenance and Repair (M&R)

There is never a shortage of M&R which is usually accomplished by Commission members who volunteer their time and labor to identify and address a wide range of tasks. Both LTM and Green categories are more constrained by funding availability, largely because of their material and/or professional services requirements. In 2016-2017, LTM projects replaced the aging roof over the Narthex, restrooms, and Koinonia and an HVAC unit that failed in Koinonia. 2017-2018 funding has been allocated to replace another HVAC to avoid an inopportune failure in the Sanctuary. An amplifier in the Sanctuary sound system had to be replaced and we are aware of the likelihood of future sound component failures. Additional LTM funding would be put towards replacing the entire system. An ambitious Green project last year was to replace half the Sanctuary lights with LEDs. After moving all the pews, the use of a 26-foot scissor lift enabled Tom Sonnemann to pull the canisters that Brett Clark and John Basset retrofitted with LEDs. Replacing the remaining half should be accomplished the latter part of this year. Focus on energy conservation will be hit harder this year, in part due to our ever-increasing electric bill. In addition to replacing more light fixtures in/on the church, preschool, and parking lot with LEDs, thermostats and occupancy sensors will be reprogrammed. Additional sensors and timers will be installed as warranted. We hope individuals will become more mindful to not waste lighting and heating/cooling. Expanding our solar installation is being scrutinized but there are still too many unknowns to determine whether this investment would pay off. Last year, M&R was kicked off with a second hour workday. Many joined in to wash windows and do general landscaping and clean up. A lot was accomplished and “a good time was had by all.” Throughout the year, M&R included:

• repairing leaks at cupola and over the office • repainting curbs and installing reflectors to mark entrance • installing a light post at entrance • providing sod in Dayspring playground (and paying for its watering) • inspecting fire alarms, extinguishers; resetting security alarms and locks • moving organ and covering cables with ramp construction • replacing failed fan in a condenser • cleaning carpets and floors, changing filters, replacing batteries, etc., etc.

20

Page 24: Annual Report 2016-17 - Danville Congregational Church · Eric Sherlock, Associate Minister 8/1/2015 to Present Gail Doering, Interim Sr. Minister 1/16/2016 to Present MODERATORS

The numerous proposed M&R jobs for this year are presently being prioritized and required resources identified. They range from rebuilding the stairway and railing from the Medical Center to cleaning up/reorganizing the various storage areas. Dayspring is operating at capacity and often calls on B&G to address their concerns/requirements. Their 2017-2018 list of requested M&R includes a number of small repairs in the four classrooms and in the playground and parking lot. The budget assigned to B&G does not include any discretionary funds for aesthetic property improvements or enhancements. Such efforts are accomplished through volunteer labor and endowment funds or individual specific monetary donations for materials. We continue to appreciate the attractive greenery and flowers that Carol Basset provides and maintains at the church entrance. The Buildings and Grounds Commission offers service opportunities for congregation members who are or could become familiar with the DCC facilities and operations; especially those with mechanical, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, or building maintenance expertise. However, anyone just interested in doing “odd jobs” or learning more about potential projects are invited to attend the second hour B&G Commission meetings. Brett Clark, John Bassett, Tom Sonnemann, Judy Halden, and Dee Brook cover the bases on this Commission. In addition to everyone’s valuable talent and donated labor, Judy and Dee, who are also very active participants in other church organizations, bring the “cross pollination” this commission needs to stay in tune. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES COMMISSION

It’s been an exciting year within children’s ministry at DCC. It continues to be wonderful to have the guidance of Pastor Eric at the helm of our “ship”. This year, as last, the children’s programming at DCC has grown richer and deeper with his guidance. Godly Play The stories and sacred time continues to support both the children and the volunteers involved. This year we have offered Godly Play for children ages 3 through 2nd grade. Holy Moly In the fall of 2016, a new program called “Holy Moly” was introduced for children 3rd-5th grade. The program involves short, language-less video clips of stories from the Bible. Following the Bible stories, children take part in crafts and conversations related to the stories. The program has been warmly received. Peace Village Camp This year, in place of our annual Vacation Bible Camp, we introduced a new camp called “Peace Village Camp (PVC)”. PVC will be held June 5-9th. The Children’s Commission and Pastor Eric are currently planning and meeting with our volunteers to plan for the exciting week, which will focus on conflict resolution, appreciation of nature, medial literacy and mindful movement. There has been a warm reception to the idea of the camp, both from our church community and the Alamo/Danville/San Ramon larger community. “Plug-in” Christmas Pageant This year we introduced a new type of Christmas pageant – a “plug-in pageant”. Participants could choose their roles the day of the pageant, allowing them to “plug-in” without any required rehearsal commitments, etc. Families reported this easing the holiday stress. The congregation enjoyed the pageant, many reported it was one of the best in years. Many thanks to all those who participated in our Children’s Commission meetings and activities this year, including: Dee Brook Mariah Callison Claire Conger Carolyn Courtright Barb DeBarger Nancy Dowell Bette Felton Nancy Halseth Dave Halseth Janis Jang Randy Jang Nan Karns

CHURCH FAMILY COMMISSION

Church Family has had an active year hosting and supporting events, our goal always being to create fun events that would bring the DCC community together to strengthen and deepen the connections in our church community.

Movie Singalong! We had a wonderful super silly, joyful, singalong movie night in October. The Sound of Music was the chosen treat! All our best Julie Andrews’ impersonations were on show as we sang our hearts out. It was so much fun! Another highlight of the evening was that beyond the 30 or so DCC people there, we had a lovely new Dayspring family join us, as we had extended the invitation to all the DSPS family!

5th Sunday, Service Sunday: On November 25, Faith Journeys, Outreach, Youth, and Church Family joined together to put on an all-church service Sunday. Each commission created service activities for members to participate in. Church Family and members made lunch for everyone attending the service Sunday. They also made dinner of soup and chicken enchiladas that were served that same Sunday Night to around 30 people at the Trinity Center Evening Program, a new adult homeless shelter opened at St. Paul's Episcopal Church last winter and moving to the Walnut Creek Armory this year.

Holiday Happenings: Church Family held our 2nd annual adult Christmas Party on December 3 which was attended by about 60 people. Kairos was decked out for Christmas. It was a potluck style and everyone provided delicious appetizers and beverages. The event provided an occasion for members to chat, sing, and enjoy. The choir led us in a wonderful time of caroling!

Mardi Gras Party: Church Family held another brilliant Mardi Gras Party on February 25 which was attended by about 80 (beautifully costumed) people. A lovely sit-down Creole dinner was catered by A Loveable Feast. The Fog City Stompers Dixieland Band brought the party alive with dancing, Congo lines and much frivolity.

None of this would have been possible without the wonderful support of our commission and friends. Thanks to Bill Armstrong, Tim Booher, Nancy Halseth, Dave Halseth, Nancy Dowell, Barbara Carrillo, Barbara Owen, Elke Torgersen, Carol Gilliland, Nicole Noga, Grant and Ligaya Marston, John Klassen, and Pat McGrath, along with all the people that stepped in with set up, tear down, and general help. Special thanks to Elke for keeping the kitchens stocked and cleaned. Blessings – Kyra Kennedy & Joyce Klassen, Co-commissioners Members: Kyra Kennedy and Joyce Klassen, Commissioners Bill Armstrong Tim Booher Barbara Carrillo Nancy Dowell Dave Halseth

FAITH JOURNEYS COMMISSION The Faith Journeys Commission worked closely with our interim senior pastor, associate pastor and moderator to carry out its role to “plan and carry out programs and events related to spiritual nurture and faith development for adults.” We had many well attended second hours that included: 2 open forums with our pastors, a Holy Land overview with our interim senior pastor, stories from a member after walk on the Camino de Santiago, Palestine 101 with a guest pastor, overview of ballot propositions from 2 of our members, estate planning and gifting with a Danville attorney, experiencing Holy Moly with our Associate Pastor, music history with our music director, Restorative Justice with an invited speaker, and the Women’s March update (in 2 sessions) with members of our congregation who attended the March on Washington. We continued to recommend 1-2 book readings per month. Our recommendations were quite diverse and included readings on the Holy Land, challenging the myth of powerlessness, a memoir of a record setting ocean swim, The Book of Joy, the justice movement in our country, The Underground Railroad, and the American economy. We broadened our activities to co-sponsor second hours with the commissions for Buildings and Grounds and Outreach. Those activities included: a “Clean Church Challenge”, a “Day of Service” for Shelter, Inc., and the Sanctuary Movement. We supported the work of our Justice and Sister Parish ministries by co-hosting 3 second hours. We heard from leaders of the Oakland Peace Center, our DCC contingent to Guatemala and members who gave a justice education program overview. In May we co-sponsored a 5-part series titled Let Justice Roll: Connecting the Dots for Systemic Change. The series was based upon J.E. Stiglitz’ book Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy and covered the topics of 1) Immigration and Refugees, 2) Race, 3) Population, Resources, and Global Warming, 4) Food, Agriculture and Sustainability and 5)Education. We strengthened our ties with our Danville community by co-hosting a highly successful book signing with Rakestraw Books for Ayesha Curry for her new cookbook The Seasoned Life.

Once again we had a large number of people who walked in the SF Pride Parade on June 26th, including many of our youth and straight allies. We also participated in the annual Castro Valley Pride on July 9th by operating a booth to share God’s love for all.

The Men’s luncheon continued their meetings on Thursdays in San Ramon, focusing on the discussion of scripture to be used the following Sunday.

Active members of the Faith Journeys Commission this year include Cheryl Pierson (commissioner), Chris Evans, Bette Felton, Charles Hartman, Dave Hill, Betsy Hosick, Bob and Dottie Howell, Bruce Lohmann and Bill Williams. Cheryl Pierson, Faith Journeys Commissioner

MEMBERSHIP COMMISSION The Membership Commission has many wonderful tasks that support the ministry of Danville Congregational Church. Those tasks include, among others, helping to assure a most welcoming greeting of new attendees, keeping track of visitors, affording non-members with the opportunity to attend informational sessions to learn more about DCC, guiding future members through the joining process, organizing new member dinners, assisting in the updating of the DCC website, and supporting coordinated efforts with Outreach to showcase the church and its ministries through participation in outside events and advertising.

During the past year, we added five new members to our DCC family. Those great members include, Steve and Heidi Bridgeman, Chris and Mariah Callison and Sandra Lepley. Also thanks to those who helped coordinate the New Member Sunday event. Those are Angie Orris, Diane Stein, and Karen Kawaguchi.

Thank you to our gracious volunteer host, Judy Halden, for hosting a New Member Lunch at her home the day before the service. It was a delightful event with great food and conversation.

Thanks to all our Red Bag Volunteers, who help to assure a visible greeting to new worship attendees. This part of our ministry assures that visitors are recognized, and are welcomed to our church and our social gathering after worship. This also helps to assure that those individuals are recognized by our members through the Red Bags they are carrying, and which acts as a magnet for additional attention by our members. Thanks so much to the current volunteers including, Kim Michaud, Barb and Judy Gestring, Melissa Tumaneng, Kristina Kelchner, Karen Kawaguchi, Bill Armstrong, Tim Booher, Ligaya Marston, Diane Stein, Alex Hasselbrink, Anne Seiler, Chris Rauen, Sereen and Tahir Mahmood, Cathy Anne Hatter, Gail Clark, Steve Paroli, and Wilson Jackson. If you would like to volunteer for this most welcoming mission, please contact New Commissioner Steve Paroli to be added to the list.

A very special thanks to Wilson Jackson for his dedicated service in tracking new attendees and for all his efforts to maintain information that could possibly lead to new members. In addition thanks to Lynda, Jennifer and Kim for their important related efforts.

Ongoing work to update the DCC website is also a special part of Membership with thanks to Karen Kawaguchi of Membership for her dedicated efforts in this task, along with John Klassen and others.

Once again this year, Membership reached out to the community with the publication of an Easter ad in the East Bay Times that goes out to almost 350,000 subscribers. The beautiful ad used the same layout and design as the previous year’s advertisement.

Other efforts are currently underway to determine the best avenues to increase membership at DCC. These efforts are so important for sustaining the fiscal, social and spiritual health of DCC. We so welcome your ideas, time and help in this cause. Feel free to drop into our commission meetings for even one time to share your ideas and to learn about our commission, or to join the group. Thanks to our commission members Diane Stein and Karen Kawaguchi, and Wilson Jackson for their unselfish dedication. Please welcome our new Membership Commissioner, Steve Paroli. OUTREACH COMMISSION

Committee Members: Barb Peterson (Commissioner), Jackie and Norman Bardsley, Marianne Clark, Claire Conger, Kathie Hixon, Doug Leich, Richard Stein, Donny Woo

The mission of the Outreach Commission is to plan and carry out efforts to bring our church and its ministries to the community and the world through word and deed. During the year, our church highlighted and supported many non-profit organizations operating within Contra Costa and Alameda counties. We also supported the UCC Northern California Nevada Conference and interfaith groups and activities within our communities.

In August 2016, we had a Summer Backpack and School Supplies Drive. We supported the efforts of Shelter, Inc. and Contra Costa Interfaith Housing by providing 34 backpacks filled with school supplies and $475 of Target gift cards to buy school clothes and shoes.

As a church family, pets included, we participated in the CROP Hunger Walk on October 16. The day of the event was blessed with much needed rain which limited the number of walkers, but DCC raised $1400 which locally benefitted the Winter Nights Shelter Program.

During the week of November 7 through November 11, DCC volunteers prepared, delivered, and served meals at the Mt. View Family Emergency Shelter. In February, we also prepared and served dinner for the Warm Winter Nights Shelter.

For the 2nd Annual Day of Service, on November 27, Outreach worked with other commissions to wrap donated Christmas gifts, prepare and deliver a warm meal to Trinity Center Evening Program, and create 35 Christmas gift bags for the participants of Valley Oak Respite.

During the Christmas Season, DCC provided Christmas gifts to 35 adults and children from Shelter, Inc. and Contra Costa Interfaith Housing. We also adopted a new recipient, the Orchid House, a drug and rehabilitation center. We provided Christmas gift bags to 13 adults and 3 children from the Orchid House.

We continued our annual support of the Ruby Slippers Gala in February. Our church family donated a variety of items for the fundraising event which benefits Contra Costa Interfaith Housing.

For the 29th year DCC coordinated with the Rainbow Community Center to provide Easter Baskets for people in our community who have HIV/AIDS. This year we donated 30 Easter Baskets. Each uniquely decorated basket was a complete Easter dinner for four plus added Easter fun stuff!

From November to May we did a monthly recognition of a local non-profit agency. The intent was to highlight the good work being done, raise awareness of local needs and to provide information about volunteer opportunities. The following agencies were recognized as Community Connections in the monthly Good News: Trinity Center Evening Program, Oakland Peace Center, White Pony Express, Valley Oaks Respite Center, Rainbow Community Center, No One Left Behind and Alameda County Food Bank.

We continued the practice of Ingathering Sunday - the 3rd Sunday of the month – to collect non-perishable food items to support the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. In 2016, DCC donated 1,080 pounds of food which equates to 900 meals. In addition, $600 was given in offerings designated for the food bank during our fiscal year. We also continue to collect toiletries which we donate to Shelter, Inc. – approximately 20 bags of soaps, shampoos, and other related items have been donated since June 2016.

The recipient of our Thanksgiving offering was the Trinity Center Evening Program - $2220.00. Our Christmas offering was divided between the Oakland Peace Center and the UCC Christmas Fund – each received $1569.50. The Easter offerings recipients were Shelter, Inc. and Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley - each received $1271.00.

Other UCC Mission Offerings collected this year were Strengthen the Church - $160.00, Neighbors in Need - $1889.00, and One Great Hour of Sharing - $2465.75.

This year the commission designated $500 of discretionary giving funds to the new Contra Costa Housing Security Fund in support of the Contra Costa Homelessness campaign.

We met our giving goal to the UCC Northern California Nevada Conference, paid in quarterly payments, totaling $28,297.00. We also gave $800.00 to the Pacific School of Religion, $700.00 to Contra Costa Interfaith Housing, $1500.00 to the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County and $25.00 to the Bay Association Scholarship Fund.

On May 20, the Rainbow Community Center honored DCC by awarding us the Pride Award. The RCC gives out two Pride Awards each year. It is a community service award designed to recognize individuals or groups that have positively impacted the LGBTQ residents of Contra Costa County through leadership and contributions of support, awareness and appreciation. We were honored to receive the award and look forward to our continued relationship with the RCC.

It was a busy year for the Outreach Commission. Many, many volunteers donated their time, their energy, and their financial support to make a difference in the lives of people we know and many whom we will never meet. Thank you to everyone – together our church family will continue to do wonderful things! Barb Peterson Outreach Commissioner

STEWARDSHIP COMMISSION The primary focus of the Stewardship Commission is to design and conduct the annual stewardship campaign, and to promote financial stewardship as well as participation in all areas of church life. Clearly, stewardship encompasses so much more than money. It is about how we use God given gifts: our time, our talents and our treasures. These gifts were given with God’s grace and should be used for all that God has entrusted to our care. We are charged to actively share our love and support for neighbors both inside and outside of the church walls. This year’s Stewardship Campaign slogan, “Keep the Light Shining” speaks to our commitment to see stewardship through the broader lens. It has been our privilege to experience the amazing generosity of our congregation, who faithfully and lovingly give of their time, their talents and their treasures. We would like to sincerely thank those who have served with energy and joy on our commission: Trish Moosbrugger, Bruce Hixon and Gary Dowell. And a very special thank you to Bob Hardy, Moderator, members of our Finance Committee – Steve Bridgeman, Syd and Leslie Dent. Their help was instrumental to the success of this year’s campaign. We also thank the Church Family Commission for organizing the Stewardship Luncheon held on April 23. Heidi Bridgeman Incoming Stewardship Commissioner

WORSHIP COMMISSION Worship Commission enjoyed a brief summer hiatus and launched the new ‘church year’ by welcoming our new Music Director, John Kendall Bailey. John started his work with DCC on September 1, 2016. John brings an incredible amount of enrichment to our music program and congregation. Keeping congregations vital, alive and relevant are challenges that face church congregations these days. Having John work with us at DCC means we have the opportunity to enrich and transform our experience and expand our influence in the community.

Music is selected to reflect the message of the worship service, in addition to providing a variety of musical textures, styles and genre. For example, a message about rejecting racism was reflected in the selection of a Mexican composer, and music by Gershwin was selected to reflect the association with the integration of race in Harlem; spirituals connect us to the topic of racism in the black experience. This year, Reverend Gail, Reverend Eric, John Kendall Bailey and Mary Deauclaire have ably managed planning of the worship services.

Highlights of our worship programs included: • The Advent program, including a Plug-In Pageant and All-Music Sunday, leading up to the

celebration of Christmas Eve during the candlelight service. • The informal Christmas Day service, with the opening of the Christmas ‘Gifts’ • A recommitment ceremony and communion on New Year’s Day • Outstanding special musical services were provided for Advent and Easter; supported by

our talented congregants, Karol Mead, Karen Connelly, Janis Jang, Joyce Boehmert, David Brown, Sandra Lepley and Heidi Bridgeman along with all the dedicated members of the choirs; both vocal and handbell.

• Our Lenten series, Roll Down, Justice

Advent and Easter decorations and flowers were beautifully supplied and arranged by our dedicated volunteers to ensure the services are properly accoutered from one season to the next. Special thanks to Janis and Randy Jang for coordinating our seasonal flowers.

Carol Bassett stepped in to provide substitute for the role of communion preparation in support of Gail Schumpert, who prepares the elements for each communion.

Worship Commission worked to improve wheelchair access in the pew configuration. Building codes require a minimum number of seats to accommodate the mobility impaired. The commission’s recommendation to reconfigure the pews to accommodate the legal number of spaces for wheel chair access given our occupancy rating, to allow for the 5’ wide paths of travel to be provided as required for safe paths of access and egress was implemented in December.

Requests for endowments for repair of the piano and the organ were submitted to the Endowment Fund Committee and approved. Staff are scheduling these upgrades as part of the overall scheduled use of the organ and piano.

Worship Commission and our Music Director did an outstanding job of managing resources and working within the budget this year. Next year, we are looking forward to continued growth in the program that supports the worship experience, and enhances John’s ability to grow the program using additional resources that amplify not only our internal worship services but also our influence in the broader community.

As the outgoing Worship Commissioner, I want to echo the sentiment shared by John Kendall Bailey, to extend our heartfelt appreciation for the Worship Commission; whose unique differences, energies and contributions have made his first year, and my last in this role, very enjoyable. Diane Hardy, Worship Commissioner

CIRCLES COMMITTEE Circles are an important part of the life of Danville Congregational Church. Circle members assist with Sunday morning worship, enjoy social events, and work on service projects together. We have eight circles: Almond, Balsam, Cedar, Cypress, Oak, Olive, Pine and Willow. This past year the committee:

• Welcomed ten new friends into circles • Worked with circle leaders and office staff to update the circle rosters • Assisted circles with rotating their leadership positions • Updated the Freelance Sunday Task Volunteer list • Revised the Sunday Tasks instructions • Coordinated the photo update for the directory • Planned a fun summer activity (Flat Jesus)

A big thank you to all who serve as Circle Leaders, Sunday Tasks Coordinators and Caring Coordinators. Many thanks to the members of the Circles Committee for their service: Karen Anderson, Penny Davis, Nan Karns, and Judy Schreib, as well as Rev. Gail and Rev. Eric for their support. COMMITTEE FOR JUSTICE MINISTRIES The Justice committee has been a conduit for representation into many organizations addressing the need to look for solutions to the justice issues of our times. We have participated in developing programs and responses, as well as offering opportunity for our congregation to participate in and support those programs. Much of our representation has been to the Multi-Faith ACTION Coalition, of which Doug Leich has served on the steering committee.

Our representatives to the task forces of that organization include: 1) Doug Leich as chairperson of the Racial Justice Working Group, 2) Norman Bardsley and Bill Williams to the Jobs Task Force 3) Doug Leich to the Housing and Shelter Task Force

Immigration: Bill Williams and Bruce Lohmann have represented DCC to the Multi-Faith Coalition for Action (MICA) headed by reverend Deborah Lee, [email protected] . This This organization follows local needs and practices, interacts with the sheriff's department and the jail to both support local people and lobby for policy. Members have attended lobbying sessions with both of our local state legislators Steve Glazer and Catharine Baker about bills relating to immigration [and police practices more generally.]

We have interacted with, and had presentations by FAME, the Faith Alliance for a Moral Economy, led by David Brazil, [email protected], and Kristi Laughlin, [email protected]. We have participated in workshops and disseminated action material from the CIPC (California Immigrant Policy Center) on how California can fight the deportation pipeline by supporting pending state legislation.

Doug Leich also represents us on the Contra Costa County Racial Justice Coalition and the Contra Costa County Council on Homelessness.

We hosted a spirited presentation on problems of race and poverty, and a networking approach to growing out of those issues in Oakland by the Oakland Peace Center [email protected], offers a long-term relationship with intersectional interests in Oakland.

We hosted a presentation by Bob Lane, on behalf of FAME, on Sanctuary - as a representative of a local congregation which has elected to be a sanctuary church.

National Lobbying: Ecumenical Advocacy Days Bill Williams and David Marshall attended a 3-day set of workshops in Washington DC to join with 850 justice members from a broad range of faiths. Participants came from all over the US, the Philippines, and a special delegation from Korea. The activities culminated in a day of lobbying the offices of Kamala Harris, Diane Feinstein, and Mark DeSaulnier with a broad "Ask" that our legislators seek policies that reflect our faith values rooted in loving one another across a broad range of legislative topics.

A justice course was offered to connect the dots between the issues that our congregation chose to address: Health and Health Care, Homelessness, Immigration, Race, Global Warming and Sustainability. The thesis of the course was that our political system must be redirected to return the purpose of government to pursue "the common good", and our faith values that flow from loving one another, from the captured purpose of maximizing profit for the privileged. Parts of that course will be continued into the coming year.

We look forward to a year of hope and purpose and action together! Bill Williams, Chair

ENDOWMENT FUND COMMITTEE The principal responsibilities of the Endowment Committee are to encourage contributions to the fund and to distribute its earnings. Grant decisions focus on four areas: Preserving our presence (our legacy of buildings and programs); Christian education (children and youth); Community nourishment (nutrition, education and spiritual giving); and Outreach/Access (transportation, housing, health and social services). Grant requests should be submitted early in DCC's fiscal year. Approvals normally are made in September. Separate funding allocations exist for unrestricted purposes and for those that are restricted to Christian education of children and youth. During the past year we approved the following requests: Worship: Piano repair Christian Education: Youth mission trip Christian Education: Pastor participation in Sister Parish delegation We received four new contributions to the fund this year. We continued the solicitation initiated last year of donations during Advent and Easter in order to honor the memory of loved ones. Thank you, donors, for your generosity! Our committee also sponsored an estate planning presentation during a Second Hour and used DCC's online and print medias to publicize grant and donation awareness. Thank you to this year's committee members: Penny Atkin, Dee Brook, Bob Kovach and Caryl Krotz. Bruce Hixon, Endowment Fund Committee Chair

FINANCE COMMITTEE For the third year in a row, we will finish the fiscal year with a small surplus caused primarily by personnel vacancies. The committee has recommended to Council for these funds to be predominantly allocated to our FY17-18 operating budget given the shortfall with the annual stewardship campaign. The mortgage with American River Bank has a principal balance of $ 3,549,468.89 and the remaining balance on the one unpaid Phase II note is $270,000 of the original $1.13 million. This note is held by the DCC Endowment Fund. Principal repayment of this final note began this last year with a $30,000 pay-off and will continue per the terms of the note through FY25-26. The allocation from Dayspring pays the entire amount of the debt service and contributes approximately $105,000 to the operating budget of the church. The church and preschool maintain a combined $150,000 in Board restricted funds with available unrestricted cash to provide a reserve for General Operations of the church and preschool. These designated funds allow for the payment of non-discretionary expenses for a period of time in the case of a financial emergency. While unlikely to occur, these Board designated restricted funds provide downside protection for the church and preschool. The Endowment Fund has increased in value by 4.79% over the past year and we maintain a balance as of May 31 of $564,435.19. This is after allocating the annual draw for FY2017 in the amount of $16,447.85 available to fulfill grant requests this year. The committee initiated the annual budget process for the 2017-18 fiscal year in late February which included the forecasting of income and expenses for both the church and preschool and establishing the needs for the Stewardship campaign. This process is more complex now with the overlapping of the church and “school” year which requires more flexibility in adjusting the budget during the year as additional information related to income and expenses are defined. The committee will continue to monitor these factors throughout the year and work with other church and preschool leadership to make budgetary adjustments as necessary. We wish to thank all the members of the Finance Committee for their sharing of expertise and commitment of time and talents. Michael Schmahl, Chair Syd & Leslie Dent, Financial Secretary Betty McCabe, Treasurer Karen Connolly, At-Large Steve Bridgeman, At-Large Gail Doering, Interim Sr. Minister Bob Hardy, Moderator Janet Apostolo, Dayspring Preschool Board

HUMAN RESOURCES COMMITTEE The HR committee provides council and assists on legal/policy matters to the Pastors, council and Preschool; many of which are confidential and cannot be shared. This year we were happy to have assisted with the on-boarding of our fantastic music director, establish a performance review process for pastors and staff, meet with the preschool director and board to improve engagement of new teachers and discuss succession planning, and worked closely with finance and pastors on equitable solutions to pay and increases for staff. Sincerely submitted on behalf of the HR Committee, Bill Armstrong, Chair Kristina Kelchner Deborah Daily

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

The task of the Nominating Committee is to determine who completed their term as officers, commissioners, and committee participants, as well as who would remain in their positions for the 2017–2018 church year according to the Church bylaws. Meetings commenced in January to identify probable vacancies for positions. Collaborating a list of members who might fulfill those openings with attributes that might include experience, thoughtfulness, leadership, availability, and commitment were some of the considerations. It was equally important for this Committee that the people nominated would have support from former people in these positions and members of their committees. All this was done confidentially. Committee members are grateful to those who accepted these positions knowing that the commitment will include more time and responsibilities on their part while serving Danville Congregational Church. Members of the 2016-2017 Nominating Committee were Larry Berlin, Bette Felton, Bob Hardy (Moderator), Janis Jang, and Richard Stein (Committee Chair); Bill Armstrong dutifully served for the majority of the year as well. Kristina Kelchner, our incoming Moderator, agreed to fill Bill’s position once Bill was committed to moving out of the area. Assisting the Nominating Committee were Interim Senior Pastor, Gail Doering and Associate Pastor, Eric Sherlock. Meetings convened on various Sundays during Second Hour and sometimes through lunch. As we inched our way through completion, it was noted that the forthcoming Church year had promise and great potential.

Godspeed to Bill Armstrong as he and husband Tim Booher move to another state. Our heartfelt thanks to Bill’s organizational skills, expertise, and dedication while serving all these years on the Nominating Committee. Janis Jang Nominating Committee Recorder

PASTORAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE – Associate Minister

Eric’s PRC continued with the same members from 2015-2016. This continuity enabled the group to continue into Eric’s second year with close, trusting relationships and understand the history of Eric’s first year with DCC. The purpose of the PRC is to lend support to Eric and maintain open relations between him and the congregation by listening and advising in a caring and sensitive manner. He has gone out of his way to connect with our youth, children and families, developing great relationship through planned activities, listening, and showing up. Eric has continued to grow and learn in his capacity as a minister. The congregation is inspired by his sermons, supportive of his creative programs for children, youth, and adults and drawn to his calm compassionate presence. The congregation needs to be reminded that Eric has limited time and resources, he needs to set strong boundaries and take time for his personal life. Eric is an incredibly talented pastor and we feel blessed to have him at DCC and to be a part of his PRC committee and growth. The PRC includes Tim Booher, Judy Halden, Alex Hasselbrink, and Kyra Kennedy (Chair)

PASTORAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE – Interim Sr. Minister The PRC for Reverend Gail continued into its second year, the process of providing support for Reverend Gail as well as providing a regular channel of communication between her and the congregation.

Members of Reverend Gail's PRC included Karen Connolly, Bette Felton, Kristina Kelchner, and Richard Stein. In April, Karen left the PRC when she and Pam Archer moved to Colorado. She will be missed. Next year, Melissa Tumaneng will join Gail's PRC. Also, we must say goodbye to Kristina Kelchner, as she is our congregation’s Moderator for the coming year. Karol Mead has agreed to step in to be our fourth member.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The dedicated women of the Prayer Shawl Ministry made it possible to present 19 Prayer Shawls to church members, family members, and friends of members. As part of our outreach we also presented 11 baby blankets to our church members and to parents at Dayspring Preschool. Another part of our outreach included donating over 200 hats and scarves to Saint Anthony’s Dining Room in San Francisco which are given to the homeless people they serve during the holidays. Hats/scarves and Prayer Shawls have been given to our friends in Guatemala and our Winter Nights guests. $140.39 was spent on yarn for the shawls and baby blankets for 2016. The yarn used for the hats and scarves is donated by the knitters in the Prayer Shawl Ministry and other church members. Active members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry for 2016 include Gail Clark, Judy Schreib, and Elke Torgersen. Marianne Clark and Nicole Noga also participated by making hats and scarves for St. Anthony’s Dining Room. In the past Marylou Acorn, Jackie McKinley and Karen Anderson have contributed to this Ministry, and Judy Leach also provided a baby blanket for Dayspring.

SISTER PARISH MINISTRY TEAM Danville Congregational Church, Danville CA Catholic Community of San Antonio, Quiche, Guatemala The committee participated in the national fundraiser for Sister Parish with the goal of raising $16k nationally to provide resources for the in country staff, such as laptop computers, training, etc. Special thanks to Bette Felton for leading this effort for the committee. DCC sponsored eight persons for a delegation to the Catholic Community of San Antonio, Quiche, Guatemala from March 30-April 8, with Rev Eric’s expenses funded by the Endowment Committee (fund for Children/Youth programs). Rev. Eric Sherlock, Trish Moosbrugger, Betty McCabe, Dylan Bretschneider, Ryan Bretschneider, Rudy Bretschneider and Jessica Rudisill participated in the delegation and shared their experiences with the congregation during worship on May 21. Special thanks to Bill Williams and the rest of the Sister Parish Committee for supporting the delegation during their preparation. Sister Parish staff Carrie Stengel visited San Antonio five times throughout the year for in-person meetings to exchange news and greetings. The meetings also served to start planning for the March 2017 delegation to San Antonio. Members of the Catholic Community in San Antonio continue to meet every Sunday in the church. In 2015 and early 2016, Bob Howell and Carrie Stengel work to develop the Joint Prayer Ministry between our two communities. During the 2017 delegation visit, we asked community members what they thought about this exchange. Tomás Hernández Itzep replied, “The idea is that we support each other spiritually, through God. We say prayers for you in our language and we don’t speak the same language. But language doesn’t matter to God. We are all children of God.” The rest of the community quickly agreed that the prayer exchange is an important part of the partnership between DCC and San Antonio. Maria O. said, "We are happy because they got here safe and sound and they were safe and sound the whole time they were here until they left." They send greetings to you all Members continue to talk about their plans to buy land for the construction of a new church. The church they currently use for worship is owned by the community, so they can use it only as long as the community mayor and authorities grant access. Although this has not been a problem recently, the San Antonio Catholic Community hopes that one day they will have their own space. They ask for DCC’s prayers that they will be able to carry out this dream. They also have an interest in designing and installing a wind turbine prototype at the church to generate electricity. Respectfully submitted, Trish Moosbrugger for the Sister Parish Ministry Team

TENANT RELATIONS COMMITTEE Tenant Relations Committee is happy to report a successful year. We met our budget goals and continue to receive positive feedback from our tenants. The position of Event Coordinator with Lynda Manstrom at the helm has worked out better than we imagined. It has eliminated many of the problems we had when renters and lessees were uncertain about procedures and policies. She has recruited some helpers and the A/V folks no longer need to be involved other than their defined duties. We serve the community by hosting six recovery groups as well as PFLAG, Gods Way Church, and Valley Oak Senior Respite Center. The value of our outreach by way of reduced rent, etc. is nearly $170,000. There are many recitals, concerts, and study sessions held in our facility. Please recommend us to anyone who might be interested in a clean, welcoming venue. Thanks to everyone for the ongoing support. Penny Atkin, Judy Halden, Randy Jang, Pat McGrath

Our Vision At Danville Congregational Church we welcome you to a progressive spiritual community that is open and affirming, celebrates differences, and encourages alternate views. We explore the Bible with curiosity

and enthusiasm, taking it seriously but not literally. Taking Christ’s call passionately to love our neighbor, we extend our faith into action for the

betterment of all. Wherever you are on life’s journey, we offer you a place of peace and hope.
