OCAAM Annual report 2015 1

SUMMARY

The background and strategy of the OCAAM foundation are briefly recapitulated, as well asthe available (human) resources; the volunteers who are members of the board of OCAAM andthe volunteers who are present in the Meditation Centre of Schiphol airport are introduced.

OCAAM employs an Old Catholic Chaplain, who does his work in an ecumenical envi-ronment with a Roman Catholic priest and a minister from the PKN (the Dutch ProtestantChurches). The OCAAM together with the Roman Catholic and the Dutch Protestant partnersfounded the Foundation Supporting the Airport Ministry Schiphol (SOLS).

The accounts for the calendar year of 2015 show a positive result, and the cash position atthe end of the year 2015 is very solid. The budget for 2016 show a negative result. We are awarewe are dependent on the support of our appreciated donors in order to be able to be a part ofthis Ministry. Continuous effort is needed to maintain the financial position of OCAAM.

1. VISION & MISSION STATEMENT

The vision & mission of OCAAM is:

• Our vision is, that in an ever more transient world, where globalization is increasingand more and more people are traveling all over the world, the Church needs to berecognized as a beacon, on which people in whatever circumstances can trust and rely

• The mission for OCAAM is for all employees, visitors and travelers at Schiphol Airport,to experience the presence of pastoral care and help through the involvement of theOld Catholic and Anglican Churches; we aim for there to be a place for reflection, whereeveryone who wishes can pray, meditate and get help.

2. PILLARS OF AIRPORT MINISTRY

What does the Airport Ministry stand for:

1. Chaplain; for the 29000+ employees of Schiphol Airport, its suppliers and the airlines.

2. Steward; for the meditation and prayer center (run by volunteers) on Schiphol Airport.

3. Shepherd; for those passengers in spiritual need, possibly due to tragedies, accidents, mishaps, stress, loneliness, etc.

3. FOUNDATION

The name of the Foundation (Stichting) is the Old Catholic and Anglican Airport Ministry(OCAAM). The Foundation continues as the legal basis for OCAAM to function as a registeredcharity in the Netherlands. Bishop Robert Innes, Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe of the Churchof England (www.europe.anglican.org) and Bishop Dirk Jan, Bishop of Haarlem of theOld Catholic Church Netherlands (OKKN, www.okkn.nl) both agreed on the statutes of theFoundation. The main articles of the statutes are:

• Each Bishop will appoint two members of the board, the fifth member will be appointedalternately by each Bishop

• The Board will aim to ensure that the appointment of a pastor from the Old CatholicChurch Netherlands or Church of England does not coincide with the appointment of aChairman from the same Church

• Volunteers to assist with the ministry at the airport will be sought equally from bothchurches

• The finances of OCAAM will be jointly funded by the Old Catholic Church of the Nether-lands and the Church of England in equal shares as and when necessary.

4. STRATEGY

By creating OCAAM, the two churches have furthered their mission of continuing their ministryat Schiphol Airport on a long term basis. OCAAM is in a position to base its support on a muchlarger local church member base to help sustain it in the long term. This move by our twochurches coincides with success in the Airport Chaplaincy in negotiating a mechanism withSchiphol Group to continue their contribution and link it to a form of cost indexation. Thesefactors help to consolidate a financial basis on which to move forward. Furthermore, OCAAMwill have a relationship with more congregations on which to rely for prayer and volunteers tohelp the chaplains with their work at Schiphol Airport.

5. ECUMENICAL PARTNERS

The Chaplain will continue to work in cooperation with Airport Chaplains from the RomanCatholic and Dutch Protestant Churches at Schiphol Airport. The OCAAM Board will continueto meet with the boards of the partner Churches so that we can cooperate together in sup-porting the Foundation supporting the Airport Ministry Schiphol (Stichting OndersteuningLuchthaven-pastoraat Schiphol, SOLS) and in sharing and developing a common vision.

6. COMMUNICATION

The websites are pivotal to communicate with the general public, these are:

8. EVENTS IN 2015

8.1. CALLS

When the Airport Ministry is approached with a specific question to support a traveller, some-body who stays at Schiphol Airport or an employee of the airport or her/his family the ministryconsiders that a call. Taking the years 2010/2011 as a reference the number of calls was 200. In2015 a total number of 303 calls were registered.

8.2. 40 YEARS ANNIVERSARY AIRPORT MINISTRY SCHIPHOL

In June 2015 we celebrated that the Airport Chaplaincy Schiphol now exists for 40 years. Wehad a dinner with all volunteers. On June 26 2015 we organized a symposium. Four peoplewere invited to give a lecture: Prof. dr. Ruard Ganzevoort, drs. Corinne van der Loos, Dr. Jorien

Holsappel and Mgr. Dr. D.J. Schoon. Also Jos Nijhuis, CEO off Schiphol Group, addressed theaudience. He praised the volunteers and chaplains and their willingness to go far beyond thecall of duty by quoting Rev. Martin Luther King.

A book about the chaplaincy was presented during the symposium: ’Een oase in eenmiljoenenstad’ (An Oasis in a city of millions). The book is written by Ellen Kok.

8.3. NEW PROTESTANT CHAPLAIN

At the end of October the Protestant chaplain Rev. Wina Hordijk stepped down and on the firstof November Rev. Marieke Meiring stepped in as new chaplain.

8.4. RECONSTRUCTION WORKS AT SCHIPHOL AIRPORT

In 2014 the reconstruction of Schiphol Airport started. This reconstruction is due to theintroduction of a new Security System. At the location of our Meditation Center a SecurityFilter was erected. So the Mediation Center had to be relocated. In June 2014 we moved to atemporary location. In 2015 we used this temporary Meditation Center. We are hopeful that atthe end of 2016 there will be a permanent Meditation Center again.

9. FINANCE 2015

The accounts for the calendar year of 2015 show a surplus ofe1.136 The cash position at theend of the year 2015 has been maintained with a balance on hand ofe55.755 over and aboveour outstanding debts. The donations in 2015 were sufficient to cover, complementarily to thecontribution of Schiphol Airport, the gross stipend of the minister (pastor). The budget for2016 income includes a contribution ofe33,666 per annum from Schiphol Group ande32.669contribution from institutions (OC&AC, individuals and interest, respectively). The expecteddeficit over 2016 ise6.333. Hopefully, starting in 2017, the annual contribution of the SchipholGroup will be increased toe35.000. Negotiations are pending.

Continuous strong effort is needed to maintain the financial position of OCAAM.

OCAAM Annual report 2015 13

1 DECEMBER 2015 WINTER 2015

Activities of the Old Catholic and Anglican Airport Ministry at Schiphol Airport The Airport Chaplaincy at Schiphol is supported by three groups: The Anglican Church in the Netherlands in combination with the Old Catholic Church, the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. We work together in ecumenical partnership to serve travellers and workers at the airport.

Tales from the frontline w/ Nico Sarot Human trafficking and intimidation. Sometimes we have to deal with these issues at the airport. I received a phone call from the special division from the police one evening. There was a woman at the office; she had just escaped her traffickers. She is afraid and does not dare file a police report. On top of this, she just wants to return to her children and if she files a report, she would be required to stay in The Netherlands for a longer period. Because the woman refuses to file a report, the police can not help her.

Perhaps the Airport Chaplaincy can play a role in this?

Two of her traffickers have followed her and are hanging out at the airport. When I arrive at the police station, she is making a call on her mobile phone. She has long, dark hair, she is slim with big grey eyes. A worried frown is on her brow and she does not speak English very well. The only Dutch words she knows are “Dank je wel" – thank you. We communicate via a phone interpreter. Her name is Alexa. She wants to make sure her children are safe before she files her police report. The men know which village she is from. When running away, she was not able to take any cash.

She has no family who can support her financially and her wallet is empty. She has been at the airport for two days now, Because it is late at night, I offer her a night in a hotel. I do not dare leave her to sleep in a chair in public; she would be an easy target for the men who intimidate her – even if it is just with their presence. I promise that we will see how we can get her home tomorrow.

Alexa gave a a detailed description of her two traffickers and their van. She looks around frightened as we walk from the police station to my car. Fortunately I am parked in front of the terminal where you can only enter with a special pass.

As we walk through the arrivals hall, I wonder how I would react if I came eye-to eye with these men. I am not strong, no hero, but I am the one taking care of this woman. Without seeing the men we reach the car. In the hotel I ask the receptionist to see Alexa to her room. I impress on reception to immediately call the police if anything untoward should happen.

I pick her up the next morning and park my car in the personnel garage where no unauthorised people can enter. And we get to the departures hall via a back road. I have already found out that a plane leaves for her country at 1130 am. And we succeed in booking her on a seat. When we are airside, Alexa called her family. On the other end of the line I hear a child’s cheer go up. And finally the face of the woman relaxes. Please do come and visit us, she insists in her broken English. I know she means it, but if I were to visit everyone who invites me I would need an extra 10 weeks holiday!

We say our goodbyes at the gate. I will send you an email via Google translate she promises. As she turns to get onto the plane I see her wave and a smile that is relaxed. Two days later I get a phone call on my Schiphol phone when I am at home. She is with her children. And now I hope (and pray) that she will be safe.
