Education, apart from helping in earning a livelihood, must also open doors of infinite possibilities of life. We are interested in educating children, importantly teach them how to use it (Meaningful Education).

o Brahmi Education respects and promotes rural values and farming. Children participate in kitchen, farming and school maintenance activities

2. There is an urgent need for education to focus on preparing children to become sensitive to societal issues - not merely accept but celebrate differences in shades, beliefs, faiths and approaches to life.

3. Brahmi-Anjana Vidya Kendra is a platform where all caring sections of our society have got together to build and sustain a concept school. The school housed on a serene farmland donated by a local philanthropist, classrooms constructed based on rural knowhow, high school and facilities gifted by charities and corporate groups and schools running expenses met by trustees, individual donors and by parents and volunteers participating and sharing sizable portion of teaching responsibility.

4. Though our out-reach program we spread the message of literacy and importance of education among the rural populace. This is the starting step to make parents bring their children to our school voluntarily. The several national festivals and cultural events celebrated at the school become interaction sessions for the parents.

"School on Wheels" Educating Children of Migrant Workers

Background

Brahmi currently provides a distinct education, combining a strong academic curriculum and personal values,

though its school Anjana Vidya Kendra near Sarjapur, Bangalore. Brahmi has a strong track-record of success in

developing and graduating children from this rural community who would otherwise not have any opportunities

for an education.

Bangalore has a large population of migrant workers, distributed majorly among construction sites and brick/tile

factories on the outskirts. These families live in temporary/make-shift-tents for the duration of the project before

moving to the next site. It is well known that their children stand a risk for a lifetime of labor, poverty and

suffering from an early age. As a result of lack of education the adults get exploited, particulalry women. Without

an identity, their children who should be in schools learning, playing and enjoying their childhood like others,

instead watch their parents and imitate them as play, At an early age, as low as eight to ten years, become earning

members themselves. Girls invariably end up getting married at an early age, as soon as attaining puberty.

Brahmi, based on a platform of success it has achieved through Anjana Vidya Kendra School, would like to

extend an helping hand to a few children of migrant workers by creating an alternate avenue to provide basic

schooling to them. Our scheme "School on Wheels" - is our sincere attempt to ensure schooling for these

children.

Beneficiaries

Migrant workers living clsoe to Anjana Vidya Kendra School,/ within a distance of about 10km from the school.

Activities from July 2015

A team of teachers headed by Mr. P. Sujay and accompanied by the head of the worker group visited the settlements

(between Bodhanahosahalli & Dunnasandra villages) close to the school to create an awareness among parents and to

persuade them to send their children to schools. This settlement is a permanent setup in this region due to active

constructions around the area. As a result of persuasive efforts of the team from the school, a group of 15 children among

several others got enrolled to Anjana Vidya Kendra School. These children were picked up by our school van , after the

regular trips. Initially these children were made to sit as a separate group, monitored and tutored by a dedicated teacher.

All of them were provided with school uniforms, bags and books. Children whose learning levels improved were distributed

to appropriate grades. A nine year old girl child moved to 2nd grade within a span of one year, starting with learning

alphabets and numbers.

Outcome

We have ensured a group of 12 children experience the joy of childhood for one whole year. A few children were found

to have good learning skills, who have become regular students in the school.

Threats and Challenge

The first challenge is to ensure they attend classess regularly. The second one is to ensure their schooling either at Anjana

or any other school in the next years. Hope they would - since the children have experienced the joy of being in a school

environment. The real threat is that most children in the group may drop out in the next academic year, due to migratory

nature of the parents. In which case the consolation is that we have ensured childhood for these children at least for a

year.

FUTURE GOALS & REQUIREMENTS

1. Strengthening School on Wheels

2. Commencement of a student home at Anjana Vidya Kendra School

3. Integrating Goodness Living Practices into the curriculum of Anjana Vidya Kendra School.

Brahmi is in the process of consolidating its present schemes. In addition to the three sources of funds

(Donors, Trustees and Parents) there is an urgent need to create a fourth source in the form of earnings from the

corpus.

Appeal for Volunteering

We Require Volunteers to Sustain the Following Activities:

1. Awareness creation among parents and children on importance of Education and Social issues

2. Our Concept School Anjana Vidya Kendra educates 300 farmers and farm-workers children in Preprimary, Primary, Higher Primary and High School sections (with about 25 children in each of the grades)

3. We are in the process of developing a Rural Science Center containing a decent laboratory, a Library with Reading Hall and a Computer Center to help children of Anjana as well as those from nearby schools

4. We sustain a unique Nutrition and Food program. School maintains a small dairy with five cows. Our nutrition program started with a glass of milk to all children and it has been upgraded for a noon-meal to all children with support from Bangalore based charity group.

5. We also sustain children in other schools and colleges by providing tuition fee and other support services 6. We intend building a student home for disadvantaged children 7. Our school on wheels benefit of children of construction workers

Anjana Vidya Kendra is a recognized school by the Government of Karnataka as an English Medium High School. Volunteers required to engage children in about 60 week-end sessions throughout the year (on Saturdays and holidays).

Children being first time learners in their family, considerable time is needed for them to become competent & acquire academic as well as other skills appropriate to their age. Volunteers play a key role in this area. A small group of 5 children can be mentored by volunteers throughout the year. Other areas of volunteering include - Social Responsibility and Public Behavior, Spoken English, Mental Math, Weekend Science Experiments, Handwriting and Calligraphy, Health, Nutrition and Hygiene aspects, Public speaking and Life Skills and Computer Skills
