The secret formula for our success all comes back to YOU. Our donors, sponsors,

volunteers, program participants, grant recipients, community partners, and loyal

supporters all help us make achieving our mission of promoting health in Sonoma

County possible.

We are so happy to report that in our 85th year, we have accomplished new highs

from the number of students who received anti-bullying education to those who have

received scholarships to pursue their health-related careers. Assisting foster children

remains a major focus in our organization as we ensure as many kids as possible

receive holiday gifts, emergency supplies, and laptop computers to set them up for

success in pursuing higher education.

Check out our highlights of the year - we love to share stories about the positive

changes we’ve brought about in Sonoma County! This impact that we’re making in

the community is impact that you, our supporters and donors, are making, too.

This year we had the pleasure of working with some fantastic students from the

Analy High School Interact Club in Sebastopol and Cardinal Newman High School

in Santa Rosa as we completed the Teddy Bears Project. With 200 stuffed teddy

bears to prepare, these students took on the task of tying a lovely red ribbon and

cheerful note on each one enthusiastically. Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital

and St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa received these wonderful bears.

Hospital staff relay that the bears provide just the right kind of cuddly comfort to

help their young patients feel a little more at ease while they are in the Emergency

Department or Pediatric Surgery area. Even when children are back home again,

parents describe the special bond that developed and how the bear continues to

give their children comfort. In the next year: we are on track to increase the number of

bears distributed to even more area hospitals.

SUPPORTING THE BELIEF THAT “EDUCATION MATTERS”

Supporting foster youth in our community continues to be one

of the most worthwhile decisions the Alliance has made. The

donation of laptop computers has been successful in encouraging

the concept of continuing education.

Last year the Give-a-Gift program launched a new initiative to

support the Seawolf Scholars Foster Youth Program at Sonoma

State University (SSU). This is the first-ever foster youth support

program at Sonoma State. The Alliance donated computers

to be used in a rental program established for their students.

We have also played an advisory role with the coordinator

of this program, Danielle Hansen. Ms. Hansen states, “Being

disconnected from resources should not be what keeps foster

youth from success. These programs work, which is why people

fund them and most campuses in California have them.”

“Getting to college is the biggest challenge for former foster

youth, but it’s not smooth sailing after that. Financial challenges,

for example, can have a different sense of urgency. When you’re

out of money, you’re out of money - these students don’t have

parents to fall back on in hard times”, describes Ms. Hansen.

The laptops donated were constantly utilized and we were thrilled

to contribute to a resource put to such good use. Supporting

programs such as Seawolf Scholars help foster youth succeed

on their college pathway …. ultimately helping improve college

completion outcomes.

In the next year: we look forward to helping these students who

got to college ... stay in college! Plans are in place for deepening

our impact with additional resources such as textbook funding

for financial assistance. Impacting children during the holidays

remains a constant priority with plans to provide even more

winter coats and emergency supplies.

GIVE-A-GIFT PROGRAM

SAFE SCHOOLS PROGRAM

{Grants are made available to elementary, middle and high schools throughout Sonoma County for the purchase of anti-bullying and

violence prevention curriculum.} GRANTS ALLOW STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF BULLYING AND HOW TO STOP IT

Now in its 13th year, the Alliance is honored to work in partnership

with the Sonoma County Office of Education to grant funding

requests for the purchase of evidence-based anti-bullying

curriculum. While not all requests were able to be funded, the

following schools were awarded: Mattie Washburn Elementary

School (Windsor), Santa Rosa Accelerated Charter School

(Santa Rosa), Cinnabar School (Petaluma), Santa Rosa Middle

School (Santa Rosa), Petaluma Junior High School (Petaluma),

Comstock Middle School (Santa Rosa), and Rincon Valley Middle

School (Santa Rosa). In the next year: we hope to promote our

program more widely with our sights set on not just raising more

funding, but also hitting the radio airwaves!

JOURNEYSAFE

high schools in Sonoma County.} ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO SPEAK UP WHEN FACED WITH DISTRACTED DRIVING SITUATIONS

JourneySafe assemblies successfully reached over 8,000

Sonoma County high school students in thirteen schools. By

providing sobering information and backing it up in real terms

with a Highway Patrol Officer, our newest drivers are influenced

to make both their behind-the-wheel and passenger experiences

safe for everyone in the vehicle. Ms. Ellie Dwight, from Sonoma

Academy describes, “...the most valuable was how “human”,

accessible, and down-to-earth Jon Sloat was - I think he was

able to deliver a lot of important content and reach the kids

with all of his stories. A gem!”. In the next year: we will extend our

reach to engage more high schools. Officer Sloat says, “The more

education, the better” and we agree.

HEALTH CAREERS SCHOLARSHIP

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS (pictured above)

Christina Gallerani’s educational journey will be taking her to

Harvard University this coming year to complete a Masters

degree in Public Health. She will be returning to UC Davis

Medical School afterwards for her 4th year. Christina intends to

become a Primary Care Physician. Visit scmaa.org to hear her

describe some of the challenges she has faced in pursuing her

education and how this scholarship has made an impact.

Mark Goitum has been on a very long road to get his RN and has

been able to rise above tremendous odds in the process. He is

happy to report that he will be able to retake a required class

at Santa Rosa Junior College this year and plans to graduate in

May 2016. He hopes to enter the Nursing program at Sonoma

State University in the fall of 2016.

Selomie Mebrahtu is a remarkably mature and intelligent

young lady. During high school she distinguished herself by

volunteering in medical settings while managing to maintain

excellent grades. Graduating in the top 5% of her class is quite

an accomplishment - we wish her continued success as she

pursues her undergraduate education.

Jennifer Vargas has certainly applied herself during her four

years of high school graduating third in a class of 257 students.

Her desire to be a Physical Therapist is based on experience

and her goal seems realistic. UC Davis will enable her to have

the basics that she will need in order to pursue a Doctorate

degree in this field.
