2013 Chairman’s Message
The retirement of long-standing Institute Director
Professor Peter Klinken and the appointment of
Professor Peter Leedman as the new Director.
This change will take place early in 2014.
The renaming of the Western Australian Institute
of Medical Research (WAIMR) to the Harry Perkins
Institute of Medical Research.
The decision to rename the Institute was made in honour of the Institute’s inaugural Chairman, Harry Perkins. I was delighted to make the announcement at the Wesfarmers Harry Perkins Oration, when Harry’s wife, son and daughter, Margaret, Charles and Jane were all present.
The end of 2013 also marked the long-awaited completion of two new medical research buildings for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. These are located at the QEII Medical Centre in Nedlands and the Fiona Stanley Hospital at Murdoch.
Researchers and administration staff moved into the Nedlands facility just before Christmas and plans are currently underway for an official opening of the building in March 2014.
Laurence Iffla
Chairman
Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research Chairman, Mr Laurence Iffla with Institute Supporter Anne Pickett and Professor Ruth Ganss at the 2013 Annual General Meeting.
I look forward to this very much as the Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott has agreed to attend. We are indebted to the Federal Government’s support for this project as well as to our other project partners, the State Government, the University of Western Australia and the Lions Eye Institute.
At the Board, we were delighted to have appointed three new Board members: Dr Bob Every, AO (Chairman of Wesfarmers and Boral), Dr Erica Smyth (Chairman, Toro Energy) and Dr Stephen Davis (Partner, Perth Radiological Clinic). All have made very valuable contributions to our Board proceedings, and Dr Every has graciously (and enthusiastically) taken up the role of Chair of the Fundraising subcommittee.
We thanked former Board member Terry Bowen who retired from the Board during the year, having made a great contribution to our work, particularly in strategic planning and financial management areas.
Public support for the Perkins is going from strength to strength, with a new event being launched for people keen to walk and fundraise for our women’s cancer research. Our first Weekend to End Women’s Cancer, which is a 60 kilometre weekend walk through Perth’s most picturesque areas, will be held in March 2014.
It was also my pleasure to participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer as part of the large WAIMR/Harry Perkins Team for the second time this year. While the weather wasn’t quite as kind to the 1500 riders as during the inaugural ride, spirits were certainly high! It was a genuinely wonderful and uplifting event to participate in, and there was a huge sense of achievement for all involved when it was announced that the participants had raised $5.2 million for cancer research at the Perkins.
Finally, I would like to express my deep appreciation to outgoing Director, Professor Peter Klinken. Peter has been the impetus behind all the growth and development of the Perkins since its beginning in 1998. Without his passion and dedication, staff and researchers would not be moving into new facilities and the Perkins would have recruited far fewer talented scientists to join the team. While I look forward to working closely with Deputy Director, Professor Peter Leedman, who will take over in March 2014, Peter Klinken’s efforts to expand and improve medical research in Western Australia will always be remembered with a great deal of gratitude by myself, the Board, researchers and the general community.
I am pleased to be introducing the 2013 annual report to you, following an exciting 12 months during which we announced two major changes:
I thank you for your support and look forward to another year of excitement and progress for the
Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.

Peter Klinken Director
This year, once again, our fantastic research teams have continued to make vital discoveries into the causes of various human diseases. In recognition of their achievements our researchers have received several awards. Aleksandra Filipovska was recognized by the Australian Academy of Sciences with the Ruth Gani
medal, the prestigious national award for genetics, while the Cancer Council of WA recognized Ruth Ganss as the Cancer Researcher of the Year, and Terry Boyle as the Early Career Cancer Researcher of the Year. In addition, Nigel Laing received a Teaching Excellence award from the University of Western Australia (UWA).
As a result of the terrific data generated by our researchers they have been able to secure numerous grants and Fellowships from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australian Research Council (ARC), National Heart Foundation, Raine Foundation, Diabetes Research Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation, Alzheimer’s Australia Research Foundation and the Cancer Council. Congratulations go to Peter Leedman, Juliana Hamzah, Ruth Ganss, Aleksandra Filipovska, Oliver Rackham, Grant Morahan, Susan Peters, Lin Fritschi, Evan Ingley, George Yeoh, Vance Matthews, Kevin Pfleger, Anna Johnasson, Archa Fox, Tom Ratajczak, Sarah Rea, Leon Flicker, Glen Arendts and Andy Redfern on their successful applications.
We are very excited about a number of new recruits who will be joining the Institute next year. With the support of UWA, Julian Heng, NHMRC Senior Research Fellow, will join us from Monash University to work on brain cancer.
Wow ! Another year has flown by so quickly, and some amazing things have happened in the Institute during 2013.
Pilar Blancafort, an ARC Future Fellow originally from Spain and the USA, will be conducting her breast cancer genetic research in the Institute, again in partnership with UWA. The Cancer Research Trust is providing invaluable support for Alistair Forrest to relocate from the premier Japanese research organization RIKEN, where he has been heading a huge international consortium examining all the genes expressed in the various parts of the body, and how these go awry in diseases such as cancer and leukemia.
Significantly, the Institute’s early phase clinical trials company, Linear Clinical Research Ltd, won a number of Western Australian Industry and Export awards in 2013. These included the top award, the Premier’s Award for Excellence, as well as the Health and Biotechnology category. These awards recognize the outstanding efforts of the entire Linear team since its inception, under the impressive leadership of Cameron Johnson. We are very grateful to Janakan Krishnarajah who is the acting CEO of Linear in the interim.
The year has also been special because we completed the construction of not one, but two, new medical research buildings. This project to generate new buildings at the QEII Medical Centre and the Fiona Stanley Hospital had its genesis way back in 2005, and both were finished in late 2013. Our architects Hames Sharley, headed by James Edwards, designed 2 truly world-class facilities, and our builders Doric Construction and Brookfield Multiplex did a great job producing 2 outstanding buildings, which will make a huge difference to research in this State.
To deliver these state-of-the-art buildings, we are indebted to many people who have contributed enormously over several years. People such as the Implementation Committee and the Project Control Group, chaired by the eternally effervescent Dick Lester. Project Director Trevor Dunn, and his marvellous assistant Elise Darsow, have overseen the design, construction, management and governance superbly.
We are also grateful to all the researchers who provided invaluable assistance, particularly Kathy Davern. Thanks also go to all the numerous experts and consultants who guided us along the way.
With the completion of the buildings it is timely to remember the remarkable financial support of almost $200 million that the Institute received from our partners. We are extremely grateful to the State and Commonwealth Governments, through their respective Health Departments, and UWA for their considerable investment in these buildings. The Institute also received wonderful support from Lotterywest, the McCusker Charitable Foundation and the Perron Charitable Foundation.
With a mixture of excitement and trepidation, we began relocating our researchers and staff into the building at the QEII campus in December. Despite all the challenges associated with such a major relocation, the move went particularly smoothly. Thanks goes to everyone involved in orchestrating this seamless transition, especially Tracey Bock, Kathy Davern, and Gwen Pfleger.
Another highly significant event took place in October 2013, when the Institute changed its name from the Western Australian Institute for Medical research (WAIMR) to the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. The name change was designed to recognize the seminal contribution of the Institute’s inaugural Chairman Harry Perkins to the establishment and growth of the organization. Without his determined commitment and the support of our founding sponsor Wesfarmers, headed by Michael Chaney, the Institute would simply not have got off the ground.
October was a busy month as the second Ride to Conquer Cancer took place over the weekend of October 19/20, with over 1300 riders pedalling 220 kilometres from Perth to Pinjarra, and back. Once again the Ride was an emotional and inspirational journey for all participants. The riders raised an awesome $5.2 million for the Institute’s cancer research, with the amazing MACA team of 240 riders, led by Geoff Baker and Tim Gooch, raising over $1 million!
Another important announcement during the year was that Peter Leedman would take over as Institute Director when the building at the QEII Medical Centre was opened. I am absolutely delighted that the Board endorsed Peter to take over the Director’s role, as Peter and I have been “partners in crime” over the past 2 decades, trying to create a strong medical research environment in WA. I am extremely confident that all the exceptional skills that Peter brings to the position will allow the Institute to really blossom in the new facilities.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters and donors for their on-going generosity. We really, really do appreciate all that you do for the Institute! Thank you to our major corporate supporters Wesfarmers, MACA, Sunsuper and Supcorp, as well as our community-based supporters, who fund numerous initiatives including the Scott Kirkbride Centre for Melanoma Research, Sock it to Sarcoma and the Rachel Doherty Foundation.
My deep gratitude goes to the Board, so wonderfully led by Larry Iffla, for all their efforts to oversee the activities of the Institute. Behind the scenes our administration does a terrific job supporting our researchers, ably led by John Fitzgerald (Chief Operating Officer), Tony Spezzacatena (Finance) and Lesley Hooper (Fundraising / Communications). To my long-suffering Executive Assistant Lucy Conte – grazie mille.
Finally, to all our researchers, thanks for another great year. I am so proud of all of you, and the great work that you perform. Keep it up because the community is relying on you to make discoveries, which will improve health in this State and globally.

MarchWA team working to create test to predict diabetes WA researchers are working to develop a test that could indicate a person’s chances of developing type 1 diabetes, as well as predict the risk of those with the condition developing diabetic complications.
Professor Grant Morahan, Director of the Centre for Diabetes Research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, says a test that can be applied at the time of diagnosis will be a great help to the children affected, their families and the clinicians caring for them, as well as saving vital health dollars.
“Likewise, a test that gives us the ability to be able to say that brothers or sisters of a child with type 1 diabetes will likely remain unaffected will also provide relief to anxious families,” he said

Important gene discovery In Muscle disease
Janurary Medal for mitochondrial researcherProfessor Aleksandra Filipovska received the prestigious Ruth Stephens Gani medal for research in human genetics.
Each year the Australian Academy of Science presents honorific awards to early career researchers under the age of 40. Professor Filipovska is a leader in her field of the genes involved in mitochondrial research.
Women who are poor sleepers are not necessarily at higher risk of breast cancer, as some studies have suggested, according to epidemiologists at the Perkins.
The research under Professor Lin Fritschi questioned previous international studies that suggested a reduction in sleep hours or quality of sleep was leading to an increase in breast cancer cases.
‘’It’s nice to be able to reassure women who don’t sleep well because they’re waking in the night to children or doing shift work that their sleeping habits have no association with breast cancer,” researcher Jennifer Girschik said.
An international collaboration of scientists coordinated by the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research has discovered one of the genes that causes a severe muscle disease which newborn babies rarely survive.
Perkin’s Laboratory for Molecular Genetics, headed by Professor Nigel Laing, is globally recognised for its research into an inherited condition known as nemaline myopathy. The laboratory coordinated the worldwide research effort which led to the discovery of the gene KLHL40.

SeptemberCell therapy for diabetics supported
Associate Professor Fang-Xu Jiang, who is head of the Islet Cell Development Program, Centre for Diabetes Research at the Perkins, was awarded a Commercialisation Australia Skills & Knowledge Grant.
Associate Professor Jiang has been working on a cell therapy to restore an insulin-dependent diabetic patient’s own ability to control blood glucose levels. He says the cell therapy aims to replace the need for daily insulin injections, avoid the life-threatening complications, reduce patient ill-health and healthcare costs, and improve quality of life.
An exciting discovery by researchers including the Perkins’ Patrick Candy, from the Leedman laboratory, may lead to more effective chemotherapy treatments of bowel cancer patients.
Researchers found that genes involved in a process called “notch signalling” caused tumours to grow quickly when switched on by the bowel cancers, leading to a lower survival rate for patients.
“Our work is leading to the point where medical professionals may be able to test levels of these notch proteins and use it to decide whether notch-inhibiting drugs might be helpful in making chemotherapy treatment work better,” Dr Candy said.

August Important link to anaemia
JulyCancers resistant to chemotherapy because of “notch signalling”
Research in the Perkins’ Cell Signalling Laboratory has uncovered a link between an enzyme in the body (Lyn) and anaemia, a blood disorder that affects red blood cell production causing serious complications for patients.
The findings could be used to fast-track treatments for patients who suffer specific types of anaemia.
Associate Professor Evan Ingley, and other researchers demonstrated the effects on red blood cells if too much of the Lyn enzyme was produced.

Assistant Professor Gina Ravenscroft’s study which looked at families with a history of a serious muscle weakening disease, (nemaline myopathy or NEM) and successfully identified 19 mutations in unrelated NEM-affected families, won the Raine Medical Research Foundation 2014 Strachan Memorial Prize.
The prize is awarded annually to a Western Australian early-career researcher in the field of health science for the most outstanding publication that translates medical science into health outcomes.
Australian researchers found that a staggering 40% of workers are exposed to cancer-causing agents in their current jobs, with men at higher risk than women.
The study revealed that the 3.6 million Australian workers most likely to be exposed to carcinogens lived in regional areas and often included men and women working in farming, mining and transport.
Professor Lin Fritschi said that unlike lifestyle cancer risks (alcohol, diet) workers do not have a choice about exposure to carcinogens, with the top four occupational cancer risks being sun exposure, diesel engine exhaust, environmental tobacco smoke and the solvent benzene.

32 33HARRY PERKINS INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL RESEARCH / Annual Report 2013 PERKINS.ORG.AU
We are dedicated to translating our discoveries from the bench in the laboratory to the bedside, offering better treatments and
hopefully cures for a range of diseases.
However, using the latest technologies to gain faster results and attracting top researchers is a constant challenge.
The fact is, medical research is expensive and we would not be achieving the results we are without the generous support of the community, so
please donate or consider leaving a bequest to the Perkins.
Donors can support specific projects or give to the Perkins as a general donation. We will use your gift in the area of greatest need. We accept
donations by post, phone or online Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
If you have any queries please contact Lesley Hooper, Director of Fundraising, on +61 8 6151 0708. We greatly appreciate your support. Thank you for
providing hope for future generations.
The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research continues to achieve scientific breakthroughs that offer real hope for the patients and their families.
