Loyola Academy of St. LouisAnnual Report 2013

Loyola Academy of St. Louis is a Jesuit middle school for boys who have the potential for college preparatory work, but whose progress may be impeded by economic or social circumstances. The Loyola community conducts a challenging program that supports families in preparing each student to achieve his full human potential. In the Ignatian tradition, the school inspires its students to lives of service and leadership through the use of their God-given talents.

mission statement

vision statement Loyola Academy helps to develop, through a holistic education, self-sufficient citizens who become catalysts for change in our community.

letter from thechairman of theboard and thepresidentDear Loyola Family,

As we reflect on another year, it is our privilege to thank you for your partnership and to share with you the rich accomplishments that have taken place. Now in our 14th year of operation, we have come a long way from being “the little school,” a name that actually followed us in our early days of development. Rich in our Jesuit roots and resilient through strong community support, we have forged ahead, and have made a difference!

Our daily expectations remain high as we challenge students to be “Men for Others” in the Jesuit tradition and to take hold of the success that we know lay within each of them. Recently, when a student was excited about a grade he had achieved, he ran to an administrator looking for congratulations. The response was a hardy, “Congratulations,’ but quickly followed by the question, ‘…but should I be impressed?” The student knew the answer. “No,’ he said confidently, ‘because it is expected of me.” The student understands his role, responsibility and the expectations embracing him within the walls of Loyola Academy. Because of the many socio-economic obstacles facing our students, previous expectations of them have included: failure, dropping out of school, teenage fatherhood, criminal activity, incarceration, even pre-mature death. Those expectations are silenced upon entering the doors of Loyola Academy. It is our expectation that Loyola men will be successful, that they will be leaders within their homes and communities, and that the cycle of poverty that has gripped many of their families for generations will be forever broken. You may have noticed that we often incorporate a fading, broken circle throughout our literature. That emblem is a symbol of the work being done every day at Loyola Academy. Every day, we break the cycle of poverty - one young man at a time.

Please take a moment, in reviewing this report, to join with us in celebrating the accomplishments of our students, facilitated in part, by partnerships with each of you. Furthermore, through this report, please know that we celebrate you! Through your gift of time, expertise and/or funding, you have done much more than simply attend a committee meeting, volunteer for a given number of hours or write a check. You have helped to instill hope within the life of a child, and hope is limitless!

THANK YOU for being a member of our Loyola family and for so generously demonstrating your faith in the Loyola mission! With your support, we will continue to break the cycle of poverty together! May God continue to show you the light of his love.

Sincerely,

Steven F. Doss H. Eric ClarkBoard Chairman President

letter from the principal

Dear Loyola Academy Family,

It is with tremendous gratitude that I am able to say that we have just completed another exciting and successful year here at Loyola Academy. That success was due in large part to your support, and we say to each of you - Thank You! Please know that while the giving of your time and resources has effect on the entire Loyola Community, your generosity is impacting individual lives, for the better.

Last year through your generous donations, we were able to keep open two small 6th grade classes so that more students could succeed at Loyola. We were able to pay off the entire line of credit on our gym, freeing us from debt. We were also able to continue annual adventures to which the kids look forward every year: the entire student body went to Camp Miniwanca, 8th graders bonded as Loyola Men on their 8th grade trip to Kansas City and students took field trips to the Botanical Gardens, the Symphony, Fox Theatre and others.

We are also learning how to improve academics for our students. This year, in order to better mirror high school classes, we will employ the block schedule during the day and require our students to read a book of their choosing for an hour each day. We also made our curricula more rigorous and introduced more stringent writing requirements across all disciplines.

These advances are made possible through our donors, volunteers, staff, families, and students. Loyola Academy is an embodiment of the care and work of so many people. It’s through that spirit of Ad majorem Dei glorium (AMDG) and being men and women for others that we change lives. Thank you so much once again for partnering with us to that end. We sincerely appreciate you.

Sincerely,

Paul BozdechPrincipal

historyIn the late 90’s, city educators were consistently finding that despite their best efforts at recruitment and retention, low income students were failing to reach their academic potential and, in many cases, were dropping out altogether. This was occurring even to students who came highly recommended by their parochial and public grade schools. In the fall of 1997, a committee was formed to discuss the problems that many low income students were experiencing and to investigate ways to help them succeed. Through this course of action, the Nativity school model was selected for implementation. After much research, the committee decided to move forward with establishing a middle school for boys. The result was Loyola Academy of St. Louis, which welcomed its first class of students in September, 1999. The school differs from other educational institutions in that it was determined that Loyola would: • serve low-income students.• complement - not compete with other St. Louis schools. • include an extended school day, extended school year and “wrap-around” services not typically associated with a school such as health care, recreation, tutoring and mentoring that would support the student and his family. All of these have been proven to increase academic success among our target population. Now in its 14th year of operation, Loyola serves approximately 60 students per year through middle school operations and approximately 75 through its Graduate Support program.
