It has been a year of transformation for Center in the Square. Construction at One Market Square is complete and $28 million in renovations have attracted thousands of visitors excited about exploring new aquariums, butterfly gardens, our spectacular green rooftop and exhibits at the Science and History Museums, as well as the Harrison Museum of African American Culture. Mill Mountain Theatre had a very successful run of Alfred Hitchcock’s 39 Steps and Opera Roanoke, Roanoke Ballet Theatre, and Roanoke Symphony Orchestra all have exciting new seasons.

I believe we have met many goals through this expansive two-year renovation. We have updated our out-of-date historic building with brand new HVAC systems and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified, low-flow water features; we are positioned to become an environmental education leader with the ability to inform individuals and businesses about the benefits of energy saving features such as

solar panels, wind turbines, and vegetated roofing; we are home to the largest living coral reef aquarium in the Mid-Atlantic; and, most importantly, we have redesigned our approach to K-12 education, providing nearly half of the Commonwealth’s K-12 school children with innovative new learning environments and exhibits that will inspire them for years to come.

At the heart of these goals are our eight beneficiary organizations. Without these crucial arts and sciences agencies, Center could not provide hundreds of thousands of school children with innovative educational experiences or continue to impact the livability and cultural vibrancy of the region. These eight organizations include the Science Museum of Western Virginia, History Museum and Historical Society of Western Virginia, Harrison Museum of African American Culture, O. Winston Link Museum, Roanoke Ballet Theatre, Opera Roanoke, Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, and Mill Mountain Theatre. These organizations require your continued support to maintain operational excellence. If you do not already support one or more of these organizations, please consider doing so today.

With this message, I am preparing to retire from Center in the Square. I consider my two decades with Center the absolute highlight of my 47-year professional career. I thank our donors, patrons, the cultural organizations, Center’s staff, and Board for making my tenure unforgettable and a pleasure.

To be an active participant in economic development, both locally and regionally, by helping assure the financial health of vital elements of Western and Central Virginia’s cultural quality of life.

Center in the Square is owned and operated by the Western Virginia Foundation for the Arts and Sciences, a 501(c)3 independent, private non-profit organization. We provide a free home, utilities, security, and custodial services to our resident organizations funded through a combination of grants, corporate donations, and individual support.

In addition to providing this support for resident organizations, WVFAS also provides similar support to off-site cultural organizations housed at independent locations: O. Winston Link Museum, Opera Roanoke, Roanoke Ballet Theatre and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra.

The Western Virginia Foundation for the Arts and Sciences owns and operates four downtown Roanoke properties: Center in the Square • Center on Church • The former Shenandoah Hotel • The former

ADMINISTRATIVE OuTREACh

Since the inception of Center Services in June, 2006, this department has undergone significant growth and changes. Center Services is now known as Administrative Outreach. The goal of this service is to decrease costs and increase revenue for non-profit organizations in order to protect and grow the

cultural resources of the Roanoke Valley, and enhance the economic health and well-being of the community.

Administrative Outreach is dedicated to helping qualified organizations within our geographic region achieve sustained economic security. We do this by providing affordable, professional marketing, data management, IT, accounting, and grant writing working for and partnering with the non-profit sector.

At Center in the Square, there are many fascinating possibilities for volunteers – from individuals age 16 and up, to pairs of friends or family who volunteer together, to scout groups. On back to back weekends in May, 138 members of the Roanoke community volunteered 521 hours assisting Center staff at two huge grand opening events: the Grand Affair Gala and Family Day of Discovery. Since reopening, Information Desk volunteers have contributed 129 hours as specialists and cultural ambassadors while stationed at the desk in the atrium. Our specially trained Tank Team volunteers served 314 hours as docents, enhancing the aquarium experience for visitors with fascinating facts about the living coral, fish, and other creatures that call our aquariums home. Center in the Square volunteers gave just under 1,000 hours of their time and talents in just two months. We look forward to how our volunteers will amaze us in the year ahead.

Center's exciting new renovations offer picturesque backdrops for many kinds of events. The Atrium and Rooftop Pavilion have become premier event spaces that are available for group rentals. The Board Room and Community Room are perfect for smaller gatherings. The recent completion of the Rooftop Event space and Catering Kitchen make it perfect for large, catered gatherings with the objective of holding 40 large rental events in 2014.

Center in the Square partnered with the McDonald’s owners in Southwest Virginia to create a new regional box office in the newly renovated Center in the Square. McDonald’s franchise owners in Southwest Virginia share a mission with Center in the Square to provide access to high quality arts and cultural amenities and educational programming for the region’s students and residents. As a gift to the region, the McDonald’s owners made a generous commitment to sponsor the new box office. This funding provides operational assistance to Center’s box office which will allow patrons to purchase tickets for activities ranging from admission to museums, musical performance, dance and theatre to science camps, author talks, book signings, gaming nights and special aquarium events.

McDonald’s Director of Marketing for the Southwest VA Owner-Operators Association, Sally Scott, says that the owners are thrilled to be a part of this renovation project! “Enhancing the educational and entertainment opportunities for the families that we have served for years is very important to the McDonald’s owners in the region. We can’t wait to collaborate with Center in the Square and the organizations within Center.”

Additional support from The Roanoke Arts Commission has allowed Center in the Square to develop a menu of ticketing and marketing services that are easily adaptable to individual artists seeking a promotional outlet for upcoming showings, as well as established arts organizations looking for a new approach toward selling season tickets and membership packages.

Their passion for arts, culture, and education in the region are an inspiration for us all and we are proud to have them as members of the Center in the Square family.

ThE pROgRAM Initiated in 1997 by Center in the Square, Center Celebrities is a program that provides special assistance to individuals, families and selected non-profit human service groups who cannot afford the usual admission fees to Center in the Square’s organizations.

Over the years, Center Celebrities has provided free admission to children, families, non-profit, and school groups who could not afford to visit Center in the Square. The Center Celebrities program successfully ensures that any child or family who wishes to visit Center in the Square will not be held back due to financial limitations.

pARTNERINg wITh LOCAL NON-pROFIT ORgANIZATIONSCenter in the Square has been able to secure funding for Center Celebrities and expand the program to include partnerships with local organizations like The Ronald McDonald House, Friendship Retirement Community, and the Rescue Mission of Roanoke. Allowing these organizations to expose their members and/or clients to Center in the Square enhances their own mission and services. It’s non-profit working for non-profit with one goal in mind – making a difference in the lives of people in our region.

AQUARIUM Sustainability ProgramThis special Adopt-A-Fish Aquarium Sustainability Program provides exceptional educational opportunities for students of all ages, and also offsets funding that will help our aquariums stay strong and vital for years to come. Adoption gifts go toward keeping our fish and invertebrates thriving,

vibrant, and healthy. This program also helps to supply the best nutrition, medications, and monitoring systems to watch over our animals. Other funds go toward the specialized maintenance of the tanks to ensure habitats are clean and pristine. With thanks to our Adopt-A-Fish contributors!
