What can we all collectively say except that 2013 was a busy year! Right out of
the starting block, we turned our desire for a training facility into a reality. The
leasing of our Therapet Training Center was one of the first steps taken in 2013
to fill some voids and reach for greater goals. With increased skills training
classes possible with the new center, we certified 18 new Therapet teams, for a
total of 87 certified animals in 2013. The center was utilized for several other
events and the facility added greatly to our ability to promote Therapet’s
mission of Health, Hope and Healing throughout East Texas.
The new center, coupled with a renewed enthusiasm and continued hard
work of our talented Board and remarkable volunteers, resulted in Therapet being
the recipient of the East Texas Crisis Center Semi-Annual Hope Award. The Hope
Award is presented to outstanding residents and businesses that have gone above
and beyond as volunteers and professionals to help victims of domestic violence.
Massive efforts were launched by our dedicated Board and Development
Committee co-chaired by Sharon Phillips, DVM and Denise Saleh to make our 2nd
Annual Unleashed fundraiser a rousing success! They set the bar high for all future
Unleashed events. 2013 fund raising efforts overall increased by an astounding
43%!
Of course, the year 2013 saw Therapet continue to provide services for
fourteen East Texas facilities along with numerous community events and public
education. Participation in more public speaking engagements, conducting a
successful seminar “Animal Assisted Therapy Symposium for Professionals and
Volunteers” at the University of Texas Southwest were also part of the mix as we
reached out to the communities we serve.
Finally, I’d like to say that all of our individual efforts are beginning to pay
off as we continue to build Therapet and position ourselves for a brighter future.
People are starting to notice. Therapet has enjoyed a resurgence in 2013 through
diligent efforts in development, governance and education. We plan to focus an
even greater effort in the years to come on working with our volunteers and our
incredible partners to raise the general public’s awareness of our core mission of
bringing Health, Hope and Healing to those in need.
