St George Baseball Association Inc 11 Annual Report : 2012 season
President’s Report It gives me pleasure to bring you my report for the 2012 season. I think we had a very good season without too many problems. The grading seems to have worked well with only a couple of problems. This season the St George committee have been in negotiation for a joint venture with the CSMLBA. The results of these meeting will be in the AGM. There have also been discussions with the Arncliffe Scott’s Social Club re the Heads of Agreement. This will also be in the AGM for discussion. I have attended meetings with Cronulla Major League, Cronulla Junior Baseball, S.M.L.B.A. and the Umpires Association re the forming of the Southern Eastern Region. This formation would give us a larger body to negotiate with the Councils and State Bodies for the benefit of growth of baseball. I would like to thank all the Clubs and their delegates for their support during the season, with your help and direction; we can look forward to our Association going forward. To the hard working Clubs committees go our sincere thanks, without these volunteers we would not have the advantage of the wonderful grounds we play on. Also many thanks to the Disciplinary Committee for their continuing hard work. To the Committee, Wendy Corey, Graham Grigg, Stuart Hitchcock, Grahame Ashton and Jeff Baker, thank you for your total commitment during the season. Without Umpires, there is no game; they worked hard to supply personnel for each game, although they were short on numbers, well done. Congratulations to the Clubs whose teams won their Grand Finals. One of the Associations main aims is to have the Stamina Cup up and running again. In closing, I wish all the Clubs the best for the upcoming season. Remember, play hard, play fair and respect your opposition. Yours in baseball Tom Evans

Secretary’s Report
Congratulations to the Premiers of each grade, the MVPs, Club Champions & the individual winners of the Annual Perpetual Trophies, and a heartfelt thank you to the Umpire’s Association and the JDC for their tireless efforts and support during the 2012 season. To the Delegates who attend the meetings throughout the year and ensure that information is passed back to their respective Clubs - thanks for making the StGBA Executive’s job a little easier! To the grounds people, canteen workers, volunteers, coaches, managers, scorers and ‘general helpers’ (and their families) who continue to give freely of their time throughout the year - Thank you. Without these people we would not survive each season and their efforts are truly appreciated by the Committee and our Members. Please remember - each and every contribution, however small, is valuable. To my fellow Committee members, thank you for your efforts, it was definitely a learning curve for me this year and your assistance was greatly appreciated by me. Without the Committee’s continued input and commitment in managing the Competition and the ongoing support volunteered to our Members, our Association cannot move forward. 2013 will bring it’s a new set of challenges, but I know that those challenges will be met and overcome. It is also my hope for the upcoming season and beyond is that we continue to grow, both has an Association and as a resource for our Members. Good luck to all Clubs in the 2013 season and once again, thanks to all for your continued support. Stuart Hitchcock Hon. Assistant Secretary - STGBA

Registrar-Recorder’s Report Looking back at the 2012 winter season, the weather created playing problems again, washed out a total of 92 games, which made the regrading a little difficult but not impossible, as usual not everybody was not happy. Our registrations for 2012 season, was disappointing in comparison 2011 season. Club registration, we gained one extra club from 21 to 22 out of this we only gained 1 extra player over all. Summary:
22 clubs comprising of 65 teams 835 registered player
The Executive regraded 14 teams this season. 7 teams were graded up and 7 teams graded down; of which 7 of these teams qualified for the final series in their respective grades, with only 1 of the regraded teams winning their Grand Final. Out of the eight (8) Minor Premiers from the regular season Six (6) were successful in taking out the Premier’s title. There were a total of 578 regular season games scheduled to be played across the 2012 winter season. Of these 578 games, only 468 regular season games were able to be played.
92 games were washed out. 17 games were forfeit
1 game was cancelled due to an injury. (Broken ankle) Over all the grades, there were a total of 10 drawn games. A total of runs scored 7173 (an average of 15.3 runs per game) Grahame Ashton Register / Recorder - STGBA

Disciplinary Committee Report
The committee adjudicated on eight [8] occasions for player ejections this season which is on average with previous years. One [1] second grade player was reported and the rest were players of lower grades. Again Umpire Dissent was the key issue inclusive of an increase in On Field Swearing. We as a committee take no pleasure in suspending players for any reason especially if the player ejection has already had an impact on the team. On several occasions this season the ejection of a player resulted in the team having insufficient players to continue and thus forfeiting the game. We urge coaches and managers to be aware of the rules and to stress to the players the consequence of their actions. The Disciplinary Committee also took the opportunity to attend and address the Umpires Association monthly meeting in an effort to ensure there was clarity around report writing and that we were interpreting the charges in the same manner. I felt it was beneficial. Again thanks to John Bailey and Wendy Corey for their contribution. Russell Knight Chairperson Disciplinary Committee - STGBA

Umpires Association Report
Our members were again pleased to provide services to the St George Baseball Association Inc for the 2012 Winter season. It was good to see that the rain did not overly impact the competition and that the players were able to compete for the titles. We would like to congratulate the premiers for their achievements and thank all the teams and players for the way the games were played during the season. There were few incidents during the season that warranted the convening of the Judiciary Committee, which is the way it is supposed to be. On this note, we would like to congratulate the Judiciary Committee for its prompt attention to the few ejections which occurred as well as their consistency in approach and sentencing. The one area we would like to comment on concerns the “collisions” that occurred during the season. There were a few that warranted ejections and a number of others that were accidents. The Association rules refer to deliberate collisions and this means that any collision is open to the judgement of the umpire as to what he actually saw. The rule we work with often puts the onus on the runner to avoid any collision. Whilst this seems reasonable, experience has shown me that often the fielder puts themselves into a position where a collision will occur and there is nothing that the runner can do to avoid this. I would urge all coaches to advise their players that they are not to be in a runner’s line without possession of the ball or not in a potential play on the ball. This can lead to an obstruction call, and worse, a collision which the runner generally could not avoid. It should also be noted that the rules of baseball are there to create and administer a fairness to the game. Many of these rules (read most) require the judgement of the umpire. He may not always see the play in the same way that the coach or player does. This does not mean the umpire is wrong or that the coach/player is wrong. In closing, we would like to congratulate the Executive on another great season of baseball and we will be there again for the 2013 season. If anyone is interested in becoming an umpire, we can always do with a few more able bodies, and eyes. Rob Buggie Hon. President - STGSBUA

Bonnet Bay Sports Club
Winter 2012 saw five teams take to the diamonds wearing the Bonnet Bay colours all keen to play some good ball Three teams made it to the finals... 1st grade lost the Grand Final 2-8 in a entertaining game, 3rd grade also lost their Grand Final 13-14 in a close game from go to woe and our 5th grade side went down swinging in the final 7-10 to the eventual Premiers. While our 2nd & 8th grade teams had "character building" seasons and will no doubt have learnt a lot & forgotten most of it before they bounce back next winter Alas no silverware for the trophy cabinet this season but success can be measure many ways and at the end of the day as a Club we feel all our teams "played hard, done good" and did us proud To the small hard working and dedicated Association Committee, yours if often a thankless job but rest assured your efforts do not go un-noticed so from our Club, players, officials & supporters a sincere thank you for a well-run season. We look forward to seeing all our players return for the Winter 2013 season, to the matrix working its 'magic" and to some good ball games....... Go Beavers hope to see you all in April Peter Noakes for Bonnet Bay Baseball Club

We look forward to the oncoming winter season which will be the first at our grounds with our new clubhouse open! We look forward to seeing you all there. Illawong Baseball Club
For the 2012 winter season the Illawong Baseball Club entered three (3) teams in the StGBA competition, 4th, 6th and 8th grade. 4th Grade was comprised of 4 father-son(s) combinations and was coached by Tony Milic. The team finished 3rd after the regular season, but went down in the minor semi final. 6th Grade was made up of the previous year’s seventh grade team which finished runners-up. But this year the team went one better and took out the premiership. The team had one bogey team all season, Comets, and it was this team that had beaten them 3 times throughout the season was their grand final opponents. In the game that mattered, Illawong defeated Comets 11 – 5. Michael Crismale took out the MVP award for the grand final. Our third team was in 8th grade and was comprised of large number of juniors who were stepping up into the senior ranks for the first time. This team was coached by Wayne Watts, so these junior players were in good hands. Although the ladder and results don’t reflect this, the team had a very successful year, with most games being extremely tight were “that one innings” doing the damage. This season saw the club’s player base increase with several players returning to the sport after several years off, and also with 8 juniors moving up into the senior ranks. The club would also like to thank the family members of the players who helped out each week and came along and cheered, and ultimately allowed us to play each weekend. We would also like to thank the Umpires Association who, without their participation, we wouldn’t be able to play our games each weekend. Illawong Baseball Club would also like to thank the committee of the StGBA for their efforts in organising the 2012 winter competition and we, as a club, are looking forward to the 2013 season. St George Baseball Association Inc 26 Annual Report : 2012 season
St. George Junior
Baseball Club
The 2012 Winter season saw our club enter 5 teams into the competition. These teams covered a variety of ability levels and ages. Our 2nd Grade team played a great season and ended up taking out the pennant in a hard-fought game against Arncliffe Scots. Finishing in third position at the end of the competition rounds, the team took on the Comets in the semi’s and then a depleted Tide team in the Final. The grand final showed the team’s offence with some strong batting in the first innings and then not letting the Scots back into the game. This side was really a composite team of Cowboys and Stallions who had played the previous season in their own strip. This season as Juniors, playing in the red and white, the team played well and finished the rounds in 3rd position. The final against Bonnet Bay was a full 9 innings affair where the game slipped away late. The team we entered into 4th grade were probably a little overgraded as this was a very similar team that played together in the previous season in 6th grade. The team was a mixture of ages with a number of junior players experiencing the game at a higher level. This will stand the players in good stead for the future. Our side that completed the competition in 5th grade had been regraded from 6th grade and found the going a little tougher. The side played well and certainly enjoyed each other’s company in each game they played. Our 6th grade side were regraded from 5th grade where they had been uncompetitive in the first few rounds. Whilst the team tried hard, there always seemed to be one innings which let them down. This team also had a number of juniors playing in it and they have benefited from the experience of player with some older heads. Overall, a very enjoyable season and we would like to thank and congratulate the Committee of the StGBA on a well-run competition and we will be back next season to hopefully nudge a few more of those premierships. St. Pats
Baseball Club
The 2012 winter baseball season was a pretty strong season for St Pat’s with the club being able to field 5 teams. We fielded teams in 4th Grade, 6th Grade (x2) and 7th Grade (x2). We were pleased to see several ‘older’ St Pat’s junior players flowing through to play senior baseball. This constant flow of players is of great benefit so as to ensure the ongoing viability of any sporting club let alone a small baseball club like St Pat’s. Our two 7th Grade teams qualified for the finals with the 7th Grade Green team going on to win the premiership in a come from behind 20-19 Grand Final win over a very good St George Leagues side. Several players in the 7th Grade Green team have/had played together for many, many years and never made a grand final so to play in one and actually win the competition was a great outcome for the team. Well done to Steve Lethlean and his players. The winner of the prestigious Black & Green Award for season 2012 was Andrew Powell from our 7th Grade Green team. Sydney Tide
Baseball Club
The hardest part is always where to grade our side and this year “The Tide’s” 9th consecutive STGBA competition was no different. Most of the boys wanted to return to 1st Grade but with 399 years on a roster of 11 and a few of the old warhorses hitting mid-forties and some diehards headed to their early and mid-fifties, 2nd Grade seemed to be the right spot! Well never a club to disappoint we went on to win the Minor Premiership with most of the same blokes we won the same accolade with in 2004, only a bit older and wiser now, sure Pop. Plagued by injuries and down three .400+ bats our offense just wasn’t worth talking about! Our Batting Champion was Peter ‘Bull’ Baker finishing regular season play at .485 with Norberto ‘Nobby’ Quinones right on his heels at .452 would this be a good time to mention they are our mid-fifties diehards! Maykel ‘Magic’ Pascual took out the Coaches Award topping too many stats to mention and Zach ‘BigDog’ McIntyre was the team’s MVP carrying the load on the hill, behind the dish and with the stick week in and week out. St George Baseball Association Inc 32 Annual Report : 2012 season
Proposed Rule Changes / Considerations :
Season 2013
Grading Matrix and Player/Team Changes : 2013 Season Proposal: In order to simplify the grading process the, grading matrix is to be submitted by the club registrars up to the point when initial grading of the teams, this has a proposed date of the 18th March 2013. After this point, any changes to the composition of teams will then be made by a new form outlining what changes you are making to the composition of the teams. These changes will comprise removal of players, addition of players, and transferring players between your teams. Background: Currently, every time a single change is made, for example, adding a new player, the club registrar is required to fully submit the entire matrix again to the Association. The problem from the Association side is that we have no idea what the change was and then have to compare the previously submitted matrix to the new one to determine that change. These changes need to be reviewed by the Association and approved, or recommendation made. Copies of the new form are available for comments. New Rule: “No Scorer – No Game” Proposal: A new rule be introduced as follows, “13.7 There must be at least one scorer before a game shall be commenced, with this scorer sitting in the designated scorer’s area. The scorer cannot score from either dugout”. Background: During the previous season there were a couple if instances where there were no scorers whatsoever and other issues of the scorer(s) scoring from a dugout and arriving at different results at the end of the game. It also to be remembered that the scorer is part of the official’s team on game day and is there to assist the umpire with the game.
