From the President’s Desk

Inordertoprovideahighqualityeducationtoitsstudents,IllinoisCollegeneedsthefinancialsupportofthousandsofalumniandotherfriends.TuitionincomefromstudentsandtheirfamiliesprovidesonlyaportionoftherevenueneededannuallytobalancetheCollege’soperatingbudget,andthathasbeenthecasesincethefoundingofIllinoisCollegein1829.Thedetailedannualreportsthatmostcollegesissueonthevoluntaryfinancialsupporttheyreceivedduringtheprecedingyeartellthereaderquiteabitaboutthoseinstitutions.Thepositiveimpacttheyhavemadeontheirstudentsandontheircommunitiescanbeseeninhowmuchthepeoplewhoknowthemwellarewillingtosupportthesecolleges.Everygifttoacollegehasastoryassociatedwithit,andeverygiftisevidencethatthecollegehasmadeapositivedifferencethatthedonorappreciates.The2012AnnualReportofIllinoisCollegeissuchasummaryofstories,storiesaboutalumni,storiesaboutcurrentstudentsandtheirfamilies,storiesaboutfoundationsandbusinesses,andstoriesaboutotherfriendsoftheCollegewhorecognizethedifferenceIllinoisCollegehasmadeinthelivesofpeoplewhomattertothem.IinvitealltoreadthesmallsampleofthosestoriesthatisincludedinthisreporttogetasenseofwhysomanypeoplegenerouslysupportIllinoisCollege.WhilemanyofthegiftslistedinthisreportweregiveninappreciationofwhatIllinoisCollegealreadyhasdoneforitsstudents,othergiftsareavoteofconfidencethattheCollegewillcontinuetosuccessfullypursueitsstatedmissionofpreparingstudentsforfulfillinglivesofleadershipandservice.OnbehalfoftheentireIllinoisCollegecommunity,andespeciallyonbehalfoffuturegenerationsofstudents,Iexpressourprofoundappreciationtoallofthedonorsthispastyear.Mostcordially,

ThevisionofIllinoisCollegeisrealizedthroughfourspecificobjectives:transformingteachingandlearning,expandingstudentaccess,enhancingcampuslifeandinvestingincentersofexcellencethroughouttheCollege.ThefutureofIllinoisCollegeisstrong,asstrongasthestoriesofthepastwhichwillshapethefutureandbethebuildingblocksforrealizingthevision.EricRansdell,aregularcontributingeditortoFastCompany,oncesaid,“Thestoriesthatyoutellaboutyourpastshapeyourfuture.”Whatamazingandinspiringstoriesaretold…welearnnotjustfromthewritingsofourfounder,ReverendJohnEllis,andJulianSturtevant,theCollege’ssecondpresident,butfromIllinoisCollegestudentswhostudyabroad,alumnithathavetakenleadershiprolesaftergraduationandfromfacultywhoopendoorstoexperientiallearningforsomany.Youwillhearwordssuchascommitment,dedication,leadership,service,vigor,pride,generosity,extraordinaryandREALIZING.RealizingtheIllinoisCollegevision.Remember,youcannotshapethefuture,orrealizethevision,withouthearingstoriesofthepast.Forexample,Bill Merris ’56fullyexpectstotransformstudentandteacherlearningwiththeBillMerrisFacultyDevelopmentAwardinPhysicalEducationwhichwill“aidthestudent…thatisthenumberonegoal.”Meet Darren Broderick ’12,whosegenerositywasunexpectedandmuchappreciatedbytheIllinoisCollegeMusicDepartment.AlsoamemberoftheU.S.ArmyReserves,Darrenissaidtobe“acaringandgenerousyoungman…”Hisgiftwillenhancetheexperienceofmusicstudents.Enrichingtheeducationalexperience,expandingstudentaccess…theBarclayfamilysays,“Yes.”Claire Barclay ’14hastraveledtoFloridaandJapan;isamemberofseveralcampusclubs;andisamemberoftheCollegemusiccommunityaswellasthelocalcommunity.Herparents,JeanneandPeter,agreethatinorderfortheirdaughtertohaveaccesstosuchexperientialprogramming,theysupporttheIllinoisCollegeFund.Leadershipprogramsplayanintegralroleinliberalartscollegesnationwide,andthatisnodifferentforIllinoisCollege.Arlin ’03and Emily Welch Boles ’03maintainprofessionalleadershiproles.Mostimportantly,theyagreetoinvestintheCollegeinordertosupportleadershipprograms,andmore.ThequalitiesofIllinoisCollegearemany:outstandingandrigorousacademicprograms,dedicatedandcaringfaculty,distinguishedgraduates,generousalumniandabeautifullytreedcampus.Allarecomponentsofourpast,butfactorsthatwillenableIllinoisCollegetorealizeitsvisionforthefuture.

Bill Merris sets up two endowment fundsLongtimeIllinoisCollegeCoachandAthleticDirector Bill Merris ’56hassetuptwoendowmentfundsthroughhisestatethatwillbenefittheCollege’sphysicaleducationprogramandtheannualBillMerrisClassicBasketballTournament.ThesenewinitiativesbyMerrisgohandinhandwithIllinoisCollege’sTransformingTeachingandLearningaspectofIllinoisCollege’s“RealizingtheVision”plan.ThiskeyareaoftheVisionfocusesonthefacultyandhowinvestinginthemensuresthatIllinoisCollegewillcontinuetotransformstudentsthroughexcellentteachingandlearningopportunities.TheBillMerrisFacultyDevelopmentAwardinPhysicalEducationisgearedtowardkeepingahighlevelofinstruction.“Iwanttheteachersofphysicaleducationtobeabletoattendfunctions,renewtheirvigorandgotoplaceswheretheycanfollowsomeoftheirinterests,”Merrissaid.“Thegistofthisistohelptheprofessorsintheprogramsandinthefieldsofphysicaleducationattendthings,dothings,havemoneytobettertheirwork--anythingthatwillhelpthemimproveandbecomebetter.”MerrisaddedthathewantsmoneytobeavailablesothatifaprofessorwantstotakeagroupofstudentstoaphysicaleducationconventioninChicago,theywouldbeabletodothatthroughthisfund.“Thisfundwillhelpinstructorsdothingsthatwillaidthestudents,andafterall,thatisthenumberonegoal.”TheotherfundthatMerrishascreatedistoensurethecontinuationoftheBillMerrisClassicBasketballTournamentthatstartedin1997,theyearafterheretiredasIllinoisCollege’sheadbasketballcoach.“TheCollegehasdoneagoodjob,andtheyhavehadsomegoodteamscomein…butitcostsmoney,”Merrissaid.“Iwanttoensurethatthisbasketballtournamentcontinues,andtherefore,IamleavingafundtoIllinoisCollegesothatIcanbeassuredthatthetournamentwillcontinue.”Merrisdoesn’tjustwantthistournamenttocontinue,hewantsittobeasgoodasorbetterthanitisnow.“Iwanttheathleticdepartmenttobeabletogetteamsinherethatarethekindsofteamsthatwewanttobeassociatedwith…andIwantittoreallycontinuetogrow,”Merrissaid.Merrisiscurrentlyfundingthesetwoinitiativeswithanannualrestrictedgift.Toensurethefundingcontinues,hehassetuptwoendowmentfundsthroughhisestateplanswhichwillprovidefundingtothesetwoprogramsinperpetuity.

Expanding Student AccessWhenaskedtoparticipateintheICFund,itwasaneasydecisionforPeterandJeanneBarclaytosay,“Yes.”Theirdaughter,Claire Barclay ’14,isdoingwellinherclasses.ShehastakenatriptoFloridaaspartofhermajorinenvironmentalscienceandhadaBreakAwaytoJapanaspartofherminorinJapanese.ClairehasbeenamemberoftheCollege’sWindEnsembleandhasbeeninvolvedinanumberofcampusclubswhichincludeICEnvironmentalists,CenterforEthnicAwareness,BrothersandSistersinChrist,andtheSonyaReadingproject.“RealizingtheVision”seeksprivatesupporttoensureacollegeeducationandopportunitiestoexpandhorizonsareavailabletodeservingIllinoisCollegestudents.WhentheBarclaysdecidedtogivetotheICFund,theynotonlyhelpedtheirowndaughterexpandherhorizonsbytakingtripsandBreakAways,theyalsohelpedotherstudentsdothesame.IllinoisCollegewaseverythingtheBarclaysexpectedwhentheyfirstvisitedthecampusin2008.“OurfirstimpressionwasthatICisacomfortable,academicenvironmentthatwouldprovideagoodeducation,”Petersaid.“TheCollegehasopenaccesstoprofessors,solidprogramsandopportunitiesnotreadilyavailabletostudentsinlargerschools.”AnotherimportantfactorforClaireandherfamilywasfindingachurchtoattendinJacksonville.ClairechoseFaithLutheranChurch.IllinoisCollegeProfessorKarenDean,whowillinglygaveherridesonSundaymornings,introducedhertoFaithLutheran.Inthefallof2011ClairehadtheopportunitytoplaytheflutewiththeJacksonvilleSymphonyOrchestrasinceoneoftheregularmemberswasonvacation.SheplaysthefluteregularlyatIC’sChapelservicesandalsoatFaithLutheranChurch.ClairereceivestheJonathanBaldwinTurnerScholarship,afineartsscholarshipforplayingintheWindEnsembleandminoringinmusic,andspecialannualmusicscholarships.ForfieldtripsandBreakAwaysshereceivescollegefunding.PeterandJeannearemembersoftheICParentsCouncilandmakethemselvesavailablewheninvitedtonewstudentactivities.ParticipationintheParentsCouncilhasconfirmedtheirbeliefinthecommitmentoftheICfacultyandstafftothestudents.ItisforthesereasonsthattheBarclayfamilysaid,“Yes”totheIllinoisCollegeFund.“WewishtoensurethatotherstudentscontinuetoreceivetheopportunitiesClairehasreceived,”Petersaid.

Illinois College’s increasing endowment provides a strong base on which to build the College’s future, dramatically enhancing its ability to meet key needs of faculty salaries, student financial aid and a host of emerging opportunities within the academic program. Senior’s $1,000 gift helps Enhance Campus LifeDarren Broderick ’12didsomethingthatisunexpectedofagraduatingsenior.Hegavea$1,000gifttoIllinoisCollege,specificallytotheDepartmentofMusicInstrumentFund.“Thiswasmylastchancetodosomethingasastudent,andsinceIhadbeeninthemusicdepartmentmywholetimeatIC,Inoticedthispastyearweseemedtohavemoreissueswiththeschoolinstruments.Theyweren’tinthebestofcondition,”Brodericksaid.SohespokewithAnnMarieStahel,directoroftheIllinoisCollegeWindEnsemble,andshetoldhimabouttheinstrumentfund.Afterthatconversationhismindwasmadeup.“WhenDarrenaskedmeaboutmakingadonationtobenefittheWindEnsemble,Iwasdelightedbutnotsurprised,”Stahelsaid.“Heisacaringandgenerousyoungmanwhoquietlywatchesoutforthosearoundhim.Whatcompletelytookmebysurprisewasthesizeofhisgift.Onethousanddollarsissounexpected,andwearesograteful!”ThistypeofgiftisagreatexampleofEnhancingCampusLifefromIllinoisCollege’s“RealizingtheVision”plan.ThegoaloftheCollegeistoseekprivatefundingforprojectsthatpositivelyimpactrecruitmentandretentionwithoutrelyingonincreasedstudentfees.TheinstrumentfundwasestablishedtocoveranyexpensesrelatedtothepurchaseorrepairoftheCollege’sinstruments.“Darren’sgiftisanextraordinarycommitmenttosupportourinstrumentalprogram,”TimothyKramer,professorofmusicatIllinoisCollege,said.Asyoucanimagine,thisfundcouldeasilybeexhaustedfromsmallrepairssuchasakeybeingfixedonaclarinet,tolargepurchasessuchasournewSteinwaypiano.Withagrowingprogram,equipmentpurchasesareoneofourmostexpensivecategories.Ifwehad$100,000inthisfund,wecouldspenditalltomorrow.”BroderickmajoredininternationalstudiesandJapanese,alongwithminoringinmusic.HeisalsointheUnitedStatesArmyReservesandwasdeployedtoAfghanistanformostof2010.Duringhistimeaway,theWindEnsemble,ofwhichhewasamember,senthimcarepackagesandhadawelcomehomepartywhenhereturned.HesawtheWindEnsembleasfamilyandwantedtosupportthemusicdepartment.“IgavealittlebitbecauseIcould,”Brodericksaid.
